Penzey's Spices Give Away
23Although I have never ordered from/purchased from Penzey’s (until now) I know there are several folks on these boards who swear by them. Anyway I received an email today that they are giving away an American Heart and Soul box valued at $35 completely free today/tomorrow with no purchase required. If you stop in the store you just need the coupon available on their web site. If you purchase on their web site they dropped their free shipping to $20.
Anyway, seemed like an amazing deal and I thought I would share.

It is an amazing deal. It’s raining and I didn’t feel like going to the store (which is probably a half hour drive), so I just ordered $20 worth of stuff.
Usually I buy my spices from Bill Penzey’s sister, because her business is so much smaller (and the prices are comparable or lower), but I jumped on this deal.
@craigthom I always buy from The Spice House since that is the business their parents started and Tom and Patty are really great. Due to the posting of this deal and the text from my sister this morning about it, I finally made my first Penzy’s order. The deal was too good to pass up and this will let me try some of the products that aren’t offered there.
I was going to order some mustard seeds also, but I’m glad I compared the prices. Quite a big difference in price for around a pound (different size bags between the 2 sites). I’ll have to keep the price differences in mind. I also noticed Penzy’s doesn’t have as much of a selection of some products, especially baking extracts.
@Aracos When I was in Milwaukee for work fairly often I’d stop by the Old World Third location (and, in the winter, Using it to see what was on the factory seconds table).
I don’t think there’s any real competition between Bill Junior and Patty. He left the family business to do mail order, while Patty stayed and eventually started doing mail order. And the Spice House isn’t nearly as big, and Bill has stores all over the country.
Bill has probably driven some business Patty’s way the last few years with his politics, which I doubt bothers either.
I had previously noticed the price difference on some items and the smaller inventory. I couldn’t add any porcini mushrooms to my Penzey’s order, for example.
You got me this time. Thanks! I ordered some fancy pepper and cinnamon gift boxes to get free shipping. Any recommendations for next time they have a coupon I can’t pass up?
@sammydog01 oh thats a good question. I just checked my spice rack since I am unfamilar, but I would like that feedback too!!
@sammydog01 Yes. Go toss out your stale spices and use these. Buy lots of the little 4 pack gift boxes, and give them to friends. Very subversive pins and bumper stickers are included, as well as recipe cards. Love people. Cook them tasty food. Just buy it all. I can never go back to generic black pepper, I must have tellicherry. And get the Paris blend.
@sammydog01 I go through a lot of black pepper, so I buy it by the quarter pound bag. I use a lot of pepper. I do not have the pre-ground stuff in the house.
If you don’t use much of a spice then, yes, buy the smallest size. Buy it whole instead of ground and and keep it away from light and heat and you can keep it for a year (or two if you just use more).
If you use a lot of something, buy the bags and use your own jars. Or just the bags. The jars add a lot to the price.
I grind my own everything except cinnamon, which is a real pain in the ass.
Ikea has (or at least had) a set of spice jars that were the same as the jar part of a pepper mill they sold, so you can just move the grinder part from one jar to another.
@sammydog01 Check to see if there is a location near you and put yourself on there email list.
@rtjhnstn GPS says 11 miles!
@OldCatLady @craigthom I ordered a jar of the ground pepper. Yes I know I shouldn’t buy the ground stuff. Maybe next time. I need to go to the store with ten bucks and no credit cards.
@sammydog01 I’m sure their ground pepper is fresher than most, but I really love freshly ground pepper. It is so much more flavorful.
@craigthom @OldCatLady @sammydog01
Grinding your own pepper is like grinding your own coffee…
You really don’t know what you’re missing until you do it.
Then you can never go back!
@2many2no fresh ground is best grind.
@2many2no It’s like brewed coffee vs instant.
@sammydog01
It’s $8 shipping if you don’t buy anything else…
Tempting either way.
I just realized there’s a retail store about 10 miles from my house. I need to bop on over there sometime.
@sammydog01 Some time this weekend
@sammydog01 There’s a store about half an hour away from me. I haven’t dared enter it.
Has anyone tried any of the salad spices?
@RiotDemon No but their frozen pizza blend is pretty good.
This is my kind of deal! I bought a bunch of bbq grilling spices and grabbed the freebie box. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I spent $25 and got the free box, shipping, the cinnamon box, french thyme, taco seasoning, smoked paprika, and a bag of telli pepper. SweeeeeeT! (and spicy)
Damn! I wish I had remembered to get some Mint.
@mfladd I have mint in my garden. I should make juleps.
@sammydog01 I have to go get some to plant this year for ice tea. My mother has chocolate mint in her garden - damn stuff actually smells like chocolate.
@mfladd @sammydog01 For iced tea I prefer spearmint or just “mint”. I grew peppermint one year, and that stuff is intense. Peppery, even.
@craigthom @mfladd @sammydog01
Planted one $2 mint pod last year. Damn thing grew to the size of the A/C unit. Smelled great. Bees loved it. Deer didn’t touch it. Would plant again.
Cat mint is another nice mint shrubbery too.
@craigthom @mfladd @mike808 @sammydog01
My mom, a dedicated gardener, used to crush fresh mint from her backyard garden for iced tea.
It smelled great.
@mfladd yeah, I forgot to get white pepper and dont want to spend another $20 for free shipping again…phuf. …1st world issues
@mfladd @tinamarie1974 Wait till next week’s giveaway. Sign up for the email, it’s good. You too, @kdemo, if you don’t already get it.
@OldCatLady should I not order this freebie?
@OldCatLady @RiotDemon Order ALL the freebies.
Thanks for that @OldCatLady! Checking it out.
@RiotDemon What @sammydog01 said. Order $20. worth of goodies plus the box, get free shipping, your selected stuff, and the box. I had to try double strength vanilla.
@OldCatLady @sammydog01 I placed my order. Got four other spices at a total of $23. Not bad for twelve spices.
Trying the ranch dressing mix, the smoked paprika, shallots, and tellicherry upon your suggestion OCL.
@mfladd @OldCatLady @tinamarie1974 @sammydog01 @RiotDemon - I have pineapple mint in my yard. It’s really nice in cold tea and tabouli.
@kdemo That sounds delicious!
@mfladd -
Mint can take over your yard if the conditions are right. Makes sense to plant it in containers.
@craigthom - I always thought your name was “craigthorn”. I just got new glasses and the truth is revealed.
@craigthom @kdemo Wow, me too it seems. But I was still oblivious until you pointed it out. Meh font fucking with us or what?
I still can’t unsee the word THORN…!!!
@kdemo @llangley It’s not the first time. I get mail addressed to “Thorn”. Other variations include “Thomas” and “Tom”.
When people ask for my name, I always spell it. My last name? “Thom T-H-O-M”. But it doesn’t really help. They write “Tom” or say, “No, your last name”.
@craigthom @mfladd @mike808 My mint was the first thing to come back this year. My garden is mostly for butterflies and they were so happy with the mint flowers. Don’t tell them I planted it for mojitos.
@kdemo I have mint at one end and bee balm at the other. They are plotting to meet in the middle.
@kdemo @mfladd @OldCatLady it will be BETTER than this one???OMG
@sammydog01 Because squirrels eat all my tomatoes this year I’m putting stuff for butterflies and bees in my 4x4 box. I mean I will. I was supposed to go buy some milkweed plants yesterday, but it was raining and I didn’t feel like going out.
Anyway, I plan to go with native plants. That’s the goal, anyway. There are indigenous beebalms and milkweeds, and maybe some wild carrots or something for the native bees and lacewings.
@craigthom Same here- the furry little assholes would steal a green tomato, take one bite, and leave the rest on my deck railing just to piss me off.
I started growing milkweed- it took three years but now I get monarchs every year. The first milkweed I put in was swamp milkweed- I recommend against it. I’ve mostly switched over to butterfly weed (the milkweed type) and they liked it last year.
I also put in fennel for the black swallowtails- they came right away- cool little caterpillars.
@sammydog01 I rent my house, so I was thinking about that swamp milkweed, since my backyard is fairly shady a swampy.
There’s a bug store here, and they sell some plants, so I’ll get what they recommend.
It’s an amazing business. It’s run by two entomologists. Their core business is bug-based pest control for commercial farms, but they also do butterfly releases for weddings and such, have a museum for kids, and classes for adults.
@craigthom My swamp milkweed grew crazy big, got masses of orange bugs (2 different types) and flowered for about a week. My butterfly weed gets the bugs too but flowers much longer and grows to a more reasonable height. The swamp ones should be fine if they’re somewhere you don’t care about. I would love to hear what the bug people recommend.
@craigthom @kdemo @llangley I’m the same way. My last name is Johnston. Even when I say it clearly, most disregard the 'T" in the name.
@craigthom @llangley @rtjhnstn - For some reason, your name always reminds me of an old Laugh In skit -
https://www.penzeys.com/
The link to the freebie is in the homepage.
Dangerous site, I say.
@f00l More dangerous when you drive by their HQ on the way to work everyday. I’m within ten minutes of three retail locations.
So I was looking at getting the BBQ box to try out some new spices. Just a heads up when looking at them. I priced out the individual items.
Individual costs = $11.19
Bundled Price = $15.95
Probably doesn’t come with the fancy extras, but if you just want the spices, it’s better to buy individually
@lichme I thought it was priced weird but figured it was for the packaging. Good looking out.
@lichme @RiotDemon The cinnamon box I took because it was on sale for half price and a quick google search showed people raving about the Vietnamese cinnamon.
@mfladd I thought about it but I have tons of cinnamon in my cabinet right now and cinnamon sugar seems silly… even so, $8 for the two things of pure cinnamon is good.
@mfladd @RiotDemon Cinnamon sugar on raisin bread toast. yummy.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 I usually make my own cinnamon and sugar, but it was a welcome addition to the box to try. For the kids and I, CS is a food staple. Hell, I grew up on cinnamon toast!
@mfladd What’s your recipe? (Just kidding.)
@sammydog01 lol
@mfladd Me, too. Toast, margarine, and cinnamon sugar (from a refilled bear shaker). I don’t do margarine now, but my mother did.
The ‘curry now’ in the box is the bees knees for cashew chicken curry salad.
The Ozark, Cajun, and Florida really do evoke those regional palates.
And the cinnamon is proper.
@mike808 Recipe for cashew chicken salad plz. Sounds really good for a sammich.
@mike808 I just placed my first order. I have no clue what to do with the curry, but I am interested in the other spices.
@ConAndLibrarian @lichme
CURRIED CHICKEN SALAD
Ingredients (4 servings)
Directions
1 Put chicken breasts in large pot of boiling salted water. Reduce heat to simmer 10-15 minutes until done. Chicken should be white when pierced with a thin-bladed knife. Remove from water and cool.
2 Meanwhile, in a large bowl combine yogurt, curry powder, and cayenne if desired.
3 Add apple, raisins, cashews, celery, scallions, salt and pepper and mix again.
4 When chicken is cool enough to handle, cut into 1-inch chunks and add to bowl; toss well to combine.
5 Place each lettuce leaf on a plate, spoon the salad into the leaf, and serve.
Enjoy.
Thanks for the heads up! I’ve also never ordered from them but for a free box o’ spices I’ll give it a try.
@melonscoop Grocery store spices and herbs are overpriced, and you don’t know how long they’ve been there.
Penzey’s or the Spice House make a world of difference. Their turnover is high enough that you know you are getting fresh stuff.
Love Penzey’s and what Bill Penzey stands for. This was his post on April 4th regarding MLK.
Penzeys Spices
April 4 at 6:46am ·
Today’s not a day for money — 50 years ago the forces of racism killed Dr. King— Today Penzeys will be closed.
All forms of hate are destructive, but there is something particularly soul-crushing about the hate that is racism. That it should be surging once again in the 21st century 50 years after Dr. Martin Luther King’s murder is tough to take. If there’s any silver lining to today’s racism, it’s that those with power and privilege who choose to fan the flames of racism know they can no longer do it openly. In King’s time it was those fighting racism that needed to be ever vigilant. These days, at least for now, it’s those promoting racism that realize their need for discretion because they know that so many would see their views as monstrous, especially the young.
In the early evening of April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was taken from us by the forces of racism. For Penzeys, April 4, 2018 just doesn’t seem like a day for business as normal, so we are giving our people a paid day off and closing our stores and call center for the day. I apologize for the inconvenience this will surely cause our customers, but in a time where the same forces that took Dr. King have re-emerged to take control of the highest offices in our country, this just does not seem like the year to look the other way.
At the heart of cooking is the belief that when we care about others the world becomes a better place, that through kindness and compassion better futures can be set in motion. Even if this new wave of racism stopped today there would still be a great deal of healing to be done and Cooks would once again be the ones to do it. As a Cook, your kindness and compassion really are the glue keeping this world together. Right now our country and the world needs what you do more than it has in a long time.
Today as we remember the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s murder, with how incredibly sad that day was, there will be the urge to say that this is just about Memphis and just about 50 years ago. Please resist that urge. With the open racism that has taken hold of the modern Republican Party, this anniversary is very much about today, and very much about all our back yards. Especially ours.
At Penzeys our locations straddle both Milwaukee and Waukesha counties here in Wisconsin. Milwaukee is a wonderfully rich in diversity community. Waukesha is where most all the families who felt the need to flee that diversity ended up. Both communities are full of kind, decent people, but Waukesha still has a smaller contingent crossing all classes that are very much there for the racism. Mostly it’s kept out of sight, but at times you catch glimpses and it’s never pleasant to see.
So many have worked so hard in Waukesha to move things forward, and they are making progress every day, but there are still those fighting to keep out diversity in any way they can. A few months back, Memphis brilliantly orchestrated the removal of two confederate war statues from city parks. The next night our family attended a Waukesha school event where we witnessed the extended family who sat down in front of us share their disgust at the statues’ removal. They kept their voices low, but their anger radiated. I just don’t get how people with so much privilege can see goodness in being so hurtful to those facing so many obstacles. Change needs to come now.
Ever since our Cooking trumps Racism email and Facebook post after the presidential election, I’ve received tens of thousands of emails from people sharing their experiences and thoughts on racism. Somewhere in reading those letters it occurred to me that maybe there’s a quicker way forward on racism. Up until now it’s only been those on the receiving end of racism that end up having to pay its considerable costs. As long as those doing the racism pay no price it’s going to continue. What if instead of turning a blind eye to those doing racism we took a conservative approach and asked those responsible to pay the costs of their actions?
One thing I’ve noticed about Cooks over the years that I think plays into why they have more positive outcomes in their lives, is that Cooks tend to be optimists. As a Cook myself, I look at the recent student-led activism in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting and see in the leadership of this new generation such hope. Not just for pragmatic gun control, but for the environment and for all forms of discrimination as well. This whole not accepting Fox’s apology until they take responsibility for what they’ve done seems to be a blending of the best of both the liberal and conservative traditions. In these young people I see so much hope for the future.
And once again, sorry to everyone who takes time out of their day to visit one of our stores or calls our call center only to find we are closed. What Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has meant to all that is good about this country is too much to not try to, in some way, show respect. Please, if you can today and in the coming days, give thought to Dr. King and all those who sacrificed so much to move equality forward in America. They payed so much to make this country great. Now is no time to slide back off the Mountaintop. Now is the time to reach for the summit.
Thanks for reading, thanks for cooking,
Bill Penzey

@cinoclav Did you see the reason for this giveaway?
@craigthom I hadn’t. That’s awesome.
@cinoclav @craigthom - The timely FB statement posted by @craigthom finally spurred me to order. It’s all sincere and enlightening, but if it’s TL:DR for anyone, just jump to the third paragraph.
I’d like to post it here, but fear a few angry reactions.
Anyway, I’m trying some salt free options - Chili powder, Pico Fruta, and Mural of Flavor. Equates cooking with art, I like it!
Thanks a bunch, @tinamarie1974!
@cinoclav @craigthom @kdemo i was impressed with his post/email but didnt post it here for fear of spurring a political discussion. He seems like an awesome guy
@cinoclav @craigthom @tinamarie1974 - I think most of us here have similar sensibilities, but there are a few . . .
@cinoclav @craigthom @kdemo one of the many reasons I love it here
@cinoclav @craigthom @kdemo @tinamarie1974 You people need to get woke.
@therealjrn - Apparently you read the linked article wrong.
@kdemo You people have your woke, but I have mine. And I’m right.
lol
STAY WOKE MY MILLENNIALS

@therealjrn I welcome people of all political affiliations as long as they don’t bitch too much.
/giphy too much bitching
@sammydog01 That’s why, here in the meh forums we all get along so well! Nobody EVAR bitches! <BSEG>
/giphy no bitches up in here
Their Foxpoint seasoning is an awesome all around use it on everything blend. They do emails every week with a different spice on special. Nearest store is an hour away so I wait for their reduced shipping specials to order more spices.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a hand held pepper grinder? The one at Penzey’s is a little pricy for me at $30.
I’ve had a couple of different ones like the round one handed pepper ball, but eventually they stop grinding really fine. When having eggs, I want super finely ground pepper.
I’m not that fond of the traditional wooden mill look, but I’ll survive if it works decent.
@RiotDemon Look for a small Turkish coffee grinder. I have both a wood pepper grinder and a brass one like this:https://www.amazon.com/MisterCopper-Turkish-Coffee-Grinder-Inches/dp/B001B1AGCO
Penzey’s Sandwich Sprinkles are called “Crack Salt” in our house. It gets put on EVERYTHING including popcorn.
@RiotDemon I think they all quit working eventually, and I’ve yet to find one I like 100%.
I have two by OXO, this one and this one. Neither are 100% what I want.
The first one is great for grinding a lot of pepper, but it’s a pain to fill. Well, both are. A funnel helps.
The second does better grind selection but it’s as good for volume.
I don’t grind very fine ever, so I don’t know if either would be what you want
@craigthom I started poking around and saw a different oxo similar to your second one.
I love pepper dust on eggs. I like the idea of this one being easy to switch between.
https://www.target.com/p/oxo-softworks-pepper-grinder/-/A-13557789
@RiotDemon It’s not obvious, but my second one has a black ring around it that, when rotated, adjusts the grind (you can see a tab on it and different sized dots).
It pays to keep it full, since I think the weight of the pepper above keeps the bottom in good contact with the grinding plates.
@LaVikinga I plan on buying some crack salt when I make it to the store.
@sammydog01 Maybe Penzey’s will help you out with a give away.
OK, I’ve been wanting to get some Saffron, but it’s so expensive (half a gram for $11!!?). I’m trusting y’all that this is the best, so I went for it, along with some Chili Piquin, Tien Tsin Peppers (I like it HOTTT!), and some Curry to round out the $20.
Please tell me I’m doing the right thing.
The free Soul Box… Damn, a nice touch for real!
@2many2no
@2many2no
/google why is saffron the most expensive spice
What Makes Saffron the Most Expensive Spice in the World? - NDTV …
https://food.ndtv.com/food-drinks/what-makes-saffron-the-most-expensive-spice-in-the-world-1679579
@2many2no You barely use any saffron, so it lasts.
I think this year I am finally going to plant some, mostly because I like the way crocuses look, but also because I like the idea. I don’t expect to harvest very much at all.
So, I just bought some vanilla and it qualified me for the free box. Thanks @tinamarie1974 for posting this and helping me spend my money.
Btw, I make the world’s bestest cookies. Eat your heart out @sammydog01.
@Barney @sammydog01 I would consider that a challenge! I shall volunteer to judge both batches of cookies
@Barney @mfladd @sammydog01
I may need to supervise the baking of both batches of cookies, as well as the unpacking and tasting of them.
@Barney Living next door to Mexico has spoiled me for vanilla. It’s been a while since I went over, but the last time I was there you could still get a litre of pure vanilla for under $10.
@moondrake OMG, I am sooooo jealous. I use so much of it that I end buying mostly the cheap fake stuff and saving the good stuff for special occasions
You should buy a bunch and sell it here!
@mfladd It used to be the main host gift I’d bring when people let me sleep at their place on my travels. I’ll try to remember the next time I’m downtown to see if the little import shops down there carry it at a good price.
@Barney Im glad I was able to help you spend your money lol. And since Im not allowed to eat cookies (boo) have a nice big bite for me please!!
@Barney @moondrake so jealous!! I use to work in Mexico and would bring vanilla back all the time. I really miss the good stuff
@Barney I’m gonna find a cookie recipe that uses lots of cinnamon and show you.
@mfladd @moondrake Ouch! Even if the price has gone up :$10 for a litre? Wow!
@sammydog01 Hey, don’t bother. You can’t out cookie me. Do you know what I call my recipe? Huh, huh, huh? Surprise Cookies, because I’m always surprised when they come out. Nope, you don’t stand a chance against me.
@Barney @moondrake The price of vanilla is crazy-can’t even get a good deal at Costco anymore.
I saw an episode of Ina Garten recently where she made her own vanilla extract. I never thought of doing this before, but I’m really thinking of giving it a try. All you need is vodka, vanilla beans, and time!
@moondrake @pitamuffin
@Barney @mfladd So I went downtown to Silvas Market, snuggled beside the Stanton Street International Bridge, one more step and you’re in Mexico. I figured if anyone would have a good price on vanilla it would be them. This is what I found. If you are willing to pay the price plus shipping, I’d be willing to mail you some. Make sure you like the ingredients list.
@Barney @mfladd Oh, and looking at this My Spice Sage sale (that I posted in April deals), I guess cinnamon sticks are pretty expensive, too. Silvas had cinnamon sticks, I guess 5-6" long, for $6 for 12oz as I recall. Seasonings in general are pretty cheap here.
@mfladd @moondrake Thanks for looking into this for us. Amazing prices. I don’t use a lot of vanilla and I just stocked up with Penzey’s, but if I can, I’ll hold you to this offer for sometime in the future?
@Barney @mfladd Sure.
@Barney @moondrake Yes, thank you so much for the offer and I will let you know when I get low
@Barney @mfladd @moondrake - If you’re looking for a way to use vanilla, put a few drops in your smoothie or protein drink. It really makes a difference.
@kdemo I have been making flavored water- my favorite so far is a few slices of orange without the peel and a couple drops of vanilla. yummy.
So I got some of the Fox Point, the Mural of Flavor and some fennel, sage, and shallots. Mural of Flavor looks like something I’m really going to enjoy. I can’t use the gift box, as I’m allergic to red chile. However I have two sets of friends getting married this summer, so it will make an excellent gift for one of them. I’m a longtime customer of My Spice Sage, so we’ll see how these compare.
@moondrake Please report back about Mural of Flavor.
@mfladd @moondrake I want to hear about it too.
@moondrake I ordered the mural as well pretty excited to try it!
@moondrake @tinamarie1974 @sammydog01 I’ve used MoF and I like it. I used it on some chicken…I’m sure the commies would rather I use it on some rutabaga or potatoes, something more fitting for my working class. I hope they don’t monitor the forum here. Hopefully the brownshirts won’t report my post!
@therealjrn I hope you have a stockpile because you’re going on their do not sell list.
@sammydog01
Damn Commies. Ordered me up a box and some other stuff–I’m on their email but I had missed the 4 or 5 emails they sent out because I didn’t think I needed any refills on my spices.
The Spice Must Flow.
Thanks @tinamarie1974!
@therealjrn
Another great mail-order spice company I have used for years is San Francisco Herb Company at sfherb.com. They sell in bulk (8 oz, 1#) so the prices are dirt cheap even though they don’t do specials. They sell spices, spice blends, extracts, oils, all kinds of tea blends and accessories. I split quantities with family/friends. Catnip for the resident felines is the cart every time. No politics included.
@carwinew Nice! So they sell spice? Or do they sell “spice”?
@carwinew I think I’m going to buy some tea from them.
Guess where I went?
And I bought all of this stuff for $15.
Now I need to find some recipes. I have been trying to make hummus and may try randomly dumping in spice mixes to see what’s good.
@sammydog01 Ahh, I see you got the free purple cup! Pretty.
@Barney Yes! I don’t know why. They haven’t started sending me emails yet. But free is nice.
@sammydog01 Hmm, I just signed up with their Heart and Soul free spice box offer, and got an email about the cup. Maybe they are afraid that if they send you emails that you will buy out their entire supply of spices and leave nothing for anyone else?
@Barney Who, me? Buy too much stuff I don’t need? I had a lot of fun smelling the samples. That was worth the trip.
@Barney @sammydog01 I got the email as well. I didn’t want to order anything else until my order comes in. Plus, I don’t need any more mugs!
@Barney @RiotDemon But I tried with 2 different emails!
/giphy waaaa
@sammydog01 mine went to my promotions box in gmail, did you check your spam?
@RiotDemon yes- what day did yours come?
@sammydog01
@sammydog01 21st.
@RiotDemon I checked both accounts, regular and spam on the 21st. Nothing. My computer must be a Republican. I signed a pad at the store- maybe that will work. Thanks for the info.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01
The code for the mug is still valid.
Also, the header says spend $7.50, but the body of the email says $5+…
@PlacidPenguin That’s a photo of my mug up there.
It pleases me more than a free mug should. Maybe because it’s purple.
@sammydog01 I love purple.
@sammydog01
I saw it, but then I noticed the vague-ish spice entitled “Sandwich Sprinkle”…
@PlacidPenguin Yeah, the sandwich sprinkle cost money. You can’t win them all.
@sammydog01
Also, I would say there’s no such thing as being too pleased with purple, but…
https://www.google.com/search?q=purple+body+paint&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj60bG83tHaAhUim-AKHS45ABcQ_AUICygC&biw=1920&bih=974
@sammydog01
What kind of sandwich is it for though?
@PlacidPenguin All of them? I made a batch of basic hummus tonight, divided it into four little batches, and added some spice mix to each. One has sandwich sprinkles in it. Testing will be at snack time tomorrow morning.
@Barney The puppies have a 12 hour bus ride tomorrow so I pulled out my cinnamon gift box and made both cookie recipes (snickerdoodles and cinnamon craisin cookies) for their teammates. You’re up.
@sammydog01
I feel like some impartial mehmbers need to try the cookies.
@sammydog01 Looks pretty good, but I’m a thinking my Surprise cookies are better. However, you are in luck, I only make mine around Christmas (no they are not Christmas cookies), and then I make around 1200 for gifts. The rest of the year, I rest. So, you can keep on believing, for a while, that you make the bestest cookies.
I don’t remember what I ordered, but it’s on it’s way!
@lichme mine too!
My box came! What an amazing deal this was!!! They also threw in two free packets of spices! I received another free Smokey Spanish Paprika AND the Flavor of Mural! Joy
@mfladd I got free paprika and Chicago steak seasoning. Those little packets were two something at the store.
@mfladd May 2nd for me.
@mfladd Mine came today, but I’ve been too busy trying to snag a BOC (which I did get!) to open it.
@Barney @mfladd Well, go open it and tell us what you got!
@sammydog01 Don’t rush me, I’m bathing in the afterglow of my BOC purchase.
@mfladd @sammydog01
No, that’s not right. I got 2 paks of Smoked Spanish-Style Paprika. And a bumper sticker, that says “Love Purple,” uh, People.
@Barney I need to find a use for all my paprika.
@sammydog01 I’m making deviled eggs for the nursing home potluck dinner on Saturday.
@Barney @sammydog01 I read that the Smokey Paprika is awesome for deviled eggs.
@Barney @mfladd I don’t like deviled eggs. I’ll make some anyway.
@mfladd @sammydog01 Good, because my deviled eggs need all the help they can get.
@sammydog01 Make some potato salad and sprinkle some on top. I make the world’s bestest potato salad. (Mom’s recipe, that’s really not a recipe.)
@Barney @sammydog01 Do not like Deviled eggs!? Blasphemy!!!
@mfladd @sammydog01 I could probably wolf down a half dozen eggs all by myself. Love me some deviled eggs.
@Barney @mfladd @sammydog01 deviled eggs are awesome… Just please don’t put olives on them, it makes me really sad.
Sammy, I use paprika on pork along with garlic, onion, chili powders and salt and pepper. I bet the smoky one is good. I ordered some.
@Barney @mfladd @sammydog01 - Should I tell the story of the chocolate chip deviled eggs here?
No?
All right.
@kdemo please, I’m intrigued.
@kdemo @RiotDemon Let me grab some antacid before you begin.
@Barney @RiotDemon - Well, you already know the punch line.
It was a dark and stormy ni . . .
Really, just a work potluck with a clueless coworker. I love deviled eggs too, so I happily bit into one thinking the dark bits were olives.
Shocked disappointment ensued.
After discreetly spitting it out, I coyly asked about the recipe. She just said she saw them on her shelf and thought they would improve the dish.
.
They didn’t.
@kdemo I bet they didn’t.
@mfladd @sammydog01 Mine had two packs of steak seasoning.
@kdemo @sammydog01 Oh, yuck. Hey @RiotDemon, at least those eggs didn’t have olives.
@Barney @kdemo I think I might actually go for the olives instead. Yuck.
@Barney @mfladd @sammydog01 I make two very popular versions of deviled eggs. One is yolks plus mayo, spicy brown mustard and finely chopped bread and butter pickles (preferably Famous Dave’s spicy version) topped with fresh ground pepper. The second is yolks plus sour cream, avocado, and finely chopped roasted green chile. A light dusting of cayenne or chipotle powder on top. These come out with light green middles so I serve them with cubed ham bites in the middle of the deviled egg tray and call it Dr. Seuss.
@moondrake So I’m thinking of moving to El Paso. I don’t play games, but I can sit very quietly in a corner and read my Paperwhite. I do cleanup after gatherings, quite nicely, and I even take out the trash. Oh, and I walk dogs!
Will you be my friend and feed me?
@moondrake No, I’m not moving to El Paso, but I think you make the most amazing food.
@Barney Any time, sweetie. It would be awesome to have someone to walk with. It would also be fun to have someone to cook for again.
@moondrake Aww…
Bill the Hippie still hasn’t sent my box yet. He said they ran out of jars this last email. But they’re happy to accept some more orders and have a couple of “free-fers.”
See? Northwoods is described as “Potatoes Best Friend” Ha!
@therealjrn those orders will arrive in like a month.
@therealjrn They may not like me enough to send me emails but my box arrived on April 21st. I got my free bottle of Northwoods at the store so now I need to cook some potatoes.
@therealjrn I just got an email! I’m so excited- they don’t think I’m a right winger after all!
@sammydog01
@sammydog01 We still have our doubts about you.
I made potatoes with northwoods seasoning and salmon with Florida pepper. They were good. And I went back to the store with my new coupon. I think I have a problem. Well, another problem.
Just got the notice that my order shipped today. (Ordered 4/15).
That’s okay, delay forgiven for the company with a good (and spicy) heart.
Still love Bill Penzey from the little I’ve read.
Carry on.
Came in today’s mail (ordered 4/16)
@therealjrn Hahaha! Don’t hold your breath that you will get your free spice box. They discovered your political leaning.
@Barney You don’t say! A liberal with a closed mind? Umpossible!
The smoked paprika (Spanish style) smells like the most delicious BBQ chips.
I had it on some fresh grouper today. Yum.
@RiotDemon Yum!
@RiotDemon @therealjrn Last night I made breaded fish with Florida Pepper, potatoes with Northwoods seasoning, and roasted vegetables with Forward seasoning. Tonight we’re having the same potatoes and vegetables with the Ozark spice meatloaf recipe. I’m also going to the store at least once a week. Dammit I’m hooked.
Oh, and that pico fruta stuff? Awesome on cucumbers.
Bill the Damn Hippie says love your mother, don’t do like that other political party and starve her and children.
Apparently Bill the Damn Hippie is A-OK with her cooking up a nice meal every day over a hot stove.
Mom Gift Box
Limited time! Mom Gift Box + Kind Pin (regularly $19.95) on sale for only $7.50.

BOX CONTAINS: 1/4 cup jars of Ground Ginger, Granulated Garlic, 4/S Seasoned Salt, 33rd & Galena and tip cards. Also includes a Kind Pin.
@therealjrn I bought 3 last week. They didn’t have the pin but they were also 3 for $19.95 or so. I’m planning on making ginger snaps. Dont forget the teacher box is $5. I have been using the Forward seasoning to roast vegetables.
@therealjrn Ever since @sammydog01 discovered her local, she hits it at least once a week. Is there a problem?
@OldCatLady @sammydog01 Hm…while I’m sure Bill the Damn Hippie enjoys her patronage, she did buy 3 Mom Gift Boxes…how many Moms again does she have?
@OldCatLady @therealjrn But, but, there was a special- $6.95 for one or $20 for three. How could I pass up such a great discount? And I sent my mom snickerdoodles using the cinnamon sugar from the cinnamon gift box I bought.
Bill the Damn Hippie is giving away free spices again. He’s supporting the kindness immigrants bring to America. A free 1/4 cup jar, plus a free 1/2 cup jar, plus a free 3/4 cup bag, but only until 1 PM EST, or 10 AM West Coast time. Free shipping over $14.95.
@OldCatLady great deal. Almost $30 free depending on what flavors.
I received my Penzy box today! SweeeeT! I am guessing the little bag of cumin was a freebie.
@mfladd I got little bags of freebies both times I ordered online and last time they threw in a little baggie of colored paper clips. Weird.
@mfladd @sammydog01 I forgot about those. Was wondering why I had an apartment of paperclips sitting on my table.
An apartment? Sheesh. Assortment.
@mfladd I put the bay leaves, nutmegs and cinnamon in a plastic bag. Please do NOT put an entire cinnamon stick into a pot of coffee.
@mfladd @sammydog01 The paper clips are to close the little bag once you open it.
@OldCatLady That makes sense. I bought some little mason jars for my bag stuff. So how much cinnamon is good? I have been putting a half stick in my infuser bottle but that’s cold water.
@sammydog01 In coffee, a quarter of a stick per pot is quite, quite memorable. It’s when you heat it that it turns into SuperCinnamon, the latest superhero. And my little bags are in shot glasses on my countertop spice rack.
@OldCatLady @sammydog01 Ya, I didn’t get a bag of paper clips. Just one clip attached to the bag. I thought that was a nice touch to add a clip for closing.
@mfladd @OldCatLady @sammydog01 All of my orders have come with a little bag with 4 or 5 paper clips in it and I had been wondering wtf they were for. It makes sense now. I probably would have figured it out if it had been just 1 clip already attached to the little bag of seasoning but a bunch of clips in their own bag just made it odd.
I didn’t bite before, didn’t look deep enough maybe. Someone poke me if he does it again and maybe I’ll give it a shot

@Cerridwyn Bill the Damn Hippie has been on a tear lately with free and/or reduced price stuff. We need President Trump to do something to piss Bill off so we can get moar deals.
@therealjrn
you made me laugh
