This seems like a pretty good price to me. I have the original Ooma, going strong for about 7 years now! Very happy with the purchase despite my paying 3X more so long ago. If mine died today, I'd get a new one, no doubt.
@stoopkid HA! But also the old units are grandfathered with ZERO monthly payments so I keep mine in fine condition. Now if the opposite were the situation, I'd off it in a heartbeat!
@alextse since they've only sold nine at this point, it looks like we might get another chance. I was wondering if they're selling them every 90 days, when the warranties run out...
@alextse 40 months (and over 2 grand in savings) into my unit and it's still going strong. That being said, I pulled the trigger on this one today as 'insurance'. I mean WTF, it's the LOWEST PRICE EVER
@rmeden When you touch my weary Meh And Ooma Telo me everything will be alright You say, "Use my bluetooth from your bed And my refurb warranty throughout the night"
My birthday is October 18th, I will accept this as a gift from anyone.... Thank you in advance, oh screw that, I will call you to thank you if you gift this to me!
you guys and gals are all so punny, or is it puny? i have several of these and have bought backups for my backups, maybe another since this price is great? don't put a lot of faith in the bluetooth features (they kinda suck in my experience), but ooma for a VOIP phone that rings all of those cordless phones you might have sitting around in boxes for $3/month, port your number, ya da ya da, i'm pretty much a fan of ooma
Was worth it at $63 last time. Excellent sound quality, good for west coast locations (lag increases as you go further east). Caller ID is not included unless you get premier. My local phone company's response to Ooma was to give me enough credits to make their phone line free for a year. So now I have 2 phone lines and saved some money too.
@cengland0 Premier caller-id includes the name as well as the number. (well, an attempt at the name).
Since they've added nomorobo to the premier spam blocking, it really works well. Noticeable difference. (I canceled premier before nomorobo because the community spam filter wasn't that good)
@rmeden Good luck with that premier name inclusion. When I first signed up, they gave me 30 days of free premier. The name was not included on 90% of the calls because most of the people call from their wireless phones. If a business calls, that name usually came through, unless it was a telemarketer and then they purposely mask their real name with something like the city name.
@uwacn I definitely notice the latency here in Michigan. Too bad they don't have colo on the east coast too. It's not bad enough to make me drop it, given the price, but it's definitely a negative. If I used the land-line more, I would probably switch away.
google voice isn't tied to a phone, you can access it online, even if you're on a computer. why would I want a physical phone in my home? I have a cell and a laptop just like everyone else. I don't need to move backwards. my house didn't even come with a landline.
@boygenius1991, I know you can use it online. I have had a Google Voice number for 6 years or so, and I have it set up so it rings both my cell and my Ooma landline. But Google Voice does not provide the connection service to my cell or my Ooma. Would it make more sense to you if I said one can't use Google Voice as a phone service provider? Ooma does.
(And no, not everyone has a cell and a laptop. #FirstWorldBias. And not most definitely not everyone thinks having a 'landline' is a 'step backwards.')
@haydesigner You actually can use google voice in a few clever ways to approx an Ooma. You can answer on your computer, or you can buy low to no monthly fee voip devices (seems there's an obi or something I've got laying around) that lets you hook a physical phone directly to your gv number.
What I liked about the Ooma is that I could plug it into the jack in the wall and get whole home service. It's also an insanely cheap way to get a business line. Quality is surprisingly good for a fiver a month or whatever it is.
@haydesigner if you get the hangouts app, login with your google voice account just enable voice and sms in settings and presto a voip solution, aka google voice in data only mode. :)
I got one when the bundle included a handset. I don't know about the bluetooth functions, but sound quality is great, no issues. total $3.95 (for taxes) a month. No extra fees. It lets us have that extra phone number to give out when you don't want to give out your cell number, or to use when the cell phone is running out of battery life. Set up was very simple and quick , I do not have premier, and caller ID is def. included, as is voice mail.
Wow, for that price I'm tempted to buy another even though I've been using one since I bought it last year from Meh for almost twice this price! Ooma saved my sanity by eliminating the 10-15 telemarketer calls I used to receive each day!!! Even the all-but-useless National Do Not Call Registry could stop those vultures! FYI, I do have a Premium account because I wanted all the tools to stop those unwanted calls, and if you pay for this service annually it only costs $7.95 a month. 👍👍👍
@katkit Actually, for me the Premiere subscription was $119.88 for the year, but that gave me the number port (normally $39.99 by itself) for free. So my final cost for the first year should have been $79.89, but at that time they also had a sale for the annual service at $99.88, so my final cost was actually $59.89. The caveat here is whether you need your number ported or not. Although had I not needed the number port they did offer other upgrades as incentive to paying for an annual subscription, but I don't remember what they were (maybe a BT dongle or extended warranty?) Still, I doubt I will renew annually unless they sweeten the offer as they had when I initially registered. I hope this clarifies?
@Kerig3 good luck with following year discounts. Ooma needs to put food on the table somehow.
But I happen to agree, Ooma's increased Premier penetration rate would likely more than make up for the marginal revenue loss of dropping the monthly cost from $10 to $8 or even perhaps $6. And they'd have even happier customers as a bonus. The marginal cost of providing Premier must be trivial.
@Kerig3 I just canceled Premier,got my credit card statement and was charged $138 including taxes this would have been my 2nd year,I was offered a $20 credit but was not worth it for me. 1st year was $99+some other gift.
@katkit That sucks and I will watch for the increase in my second year, but to me the telemarketer tools are completely worth it. As I said, I used to get 10-15 robocalls a day and it was stressful for me as I am disabled with a chronic pain illness and increased stress increases my actual physical pain. Additionally they would call while I was sleeping in the afternoon (sleep does not come easy for me). So $10 a month (plus tax) is totally worth it to me.
@RedOak I agree that the cost for Ooma to offer the Premier tools is minimal at best as it is software driven. But on the other hand I want Ooma to survive as a company since I had to pay for the hardware and would like to get a few years use out of it. And you're right, they could do better at drawing more paid customers with cheaper fees, but after paying $52 a month for a landline for 25 years, $10 seems like a steal to me.
AARRRGGGGHHH!! I just bought a refurb unit from Groupon three weeks ago for $75, no Bluetooth. Ah well, such is life. Call quality is great and it's nice to have a landline for working from home since cell reception is spotty 'round here.
For what it's worth. I do have one of these now and I'd LOVE you guys to sell some accessories sometime. Maybe the wifi adapter or the wifi plug thing. (2nd phone jack from a wifi port... I should just look up ooma's name for it.) well worth it. When I moved to T-Mobile the service was iffy. Now I'm not worried about losing a call due to service issues. (I really only care about on-call calls. I have it set to a google voice number that rings both my phone and ooma at the same time)
I bought an original version several years back... but it DIED suddenly after about two years. Which really really sucked! When that happened OOMA told me that I would have to get a new device and that I would have to pay taxes on the services every month. UGH! It's been a while now and I am ready to use OOMA again. I cannot stand it when I need to make a phone call and my iPhone has just died. I'm not one of those weirdo's that likes to be hooked up to the plug in the wall while making a phone call. What can I say, I have standards for the year 2015.
Even with the issues, you still cannot go wrong with OOMA. I have had Skype in its place for a long time now and the service was okay in the beginning but now it is horrendous. Calls dropped all the time... crackling noises. I have premier internet too. Just get OOMA and be done with it.
I'd LOVE to be able to use one of these ...... however - my carrier out here in the country where we live is Verizon, and they don't sell internet without a landline phone attached to it. If I could get high-speed internet out here without them, I'd cheerfully cancel the $70.00 per month for basic service/no long distance phone bill I have from them. Tried calling Hughes Net, whom would have cheerfully hooked us up - but they advised we still would have had to keep our Verizon line in order for their services to work for us. Nobody out here seems to just sell internet connection alone for where we live. Sorry, Ooma ...... maybe someday.
@scfd0766 Not sure but I think you might be referring to DSL. That makes sense because that service rides on the two-wires needed for a phone line. You're taking up just as many resources for them anyway so I get it.
@scfd0766 I wonder if you set up the ooma then connected your hughes net box to it if it would cause issues... you could try for a month or two and see if it will save you money, but if you were to lose signal and it needed to dial out before it could restore that could be problematic. also a single point of failure, internet needs to work to get phone, phone needs to work to get internet circular logic...
@scfd0766 I have a good friend who lives in the Northern Michigan boonies (actually, only 1 mile and $72,000 from the Charter service area, sigh). He had Hughes for a couple years and it was truly terrible. He has switched to Exede and it works great. The data cap is a drag ($129/mo 25 gig) but compared to the alternative (cellular) he is very happy. That said, if you have working DSL from verizon it's probably a better deal.
Wow...8:30 am meh-time, and only 141 of these sold at this price? If I didn't have two ooma's already, I don't think I could pass on this deal. I suppose I could buy another one to cost-average my investment in giving the phone company's overcharging ways the middle finger, just because this is the lowest price I've ever seen. Well, if you don't count the tweaker on the street corner price anyway..;)
Love my ooma, cause even with meh-math, and premiere service, $14/month is a better deal than $55+/month through the rip off company.
I have the older Ooma device at my house, without the premier service. I love it. Costs like $3 a month and works great. I was in Japan recently and was able to use the Ooma app on my phone to call people back home when I was wifi at the hotel without racking up international calls or asking them to install anything. Oh, and even if I haven't been home in weeks, I can see all my voicemails right here!
@Renee4183OOMA app... there's an OOMA app?? Who knew! Gotta check that out. I love our OOMA and set one up for my elderly parents as well. IMHO the best secondary investment for an OOMA system is a UPS so that when the power company has a hiccup and throws you a momentary power failure your modem, router and OOMA all stay alive and well for about 30 minutes. This is especially good for the parents. No having to restart the service etc. I bought mine about 40 months -or over $2000- ago. Time to buy a backup for insurance purposes.
@chienfou It is called Ooma Mobile and it's available for Android and Apple as a free download as long as you are an Ooma subscriber. If you have premier you can receive calls. I just have basic so i can only make them, but still!
Great for a backup "land line" phone at the house. I know it's VOIP and uses my Internet connection, but it's a secondary means of placing phone calls if the cell phone is dead, broken, or if the cell service is out. Also good for finding your cell phone by calling it. I tend to call the Ooma if my wife doesn't answer her cell phone. (sometimes she forgets to turn her ringer volume back up)
For folks who think it's junk because it won't work in a power outage, check this out! I have mine hooked up to the same UPS as I do my modem and router. This means even if the power is out, I still have Internet connection and can use the Ooma! (until the UPS battery dies) I got my little UPS for CHEAP at Sam's club. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/prod17802054.ip I haven't tested it to see how long the battery will last, but it has prevented the modem and router from restarting when the power flickered during a storm.
@medz DITTO, I have been doing that since I set mine and my parent's units up and have never had a problem. Mine lasts over 30 minutes with all three plugged in and I haven't needed it for anywhere over 5 so far, but it's cheap insurance and saves the hassle of re-starting the services. I also keep my land line because I can have multiple phones in the house and am not tied to keeping a cell underhand as I move from spot to spot. The cell goes onto the charger and stays there until I leave. This is also a WAY cheaper option for long distance calls overseas, if you have foreign relatives or contacts.
@chienfou I talk to my brother in England for free with Skype, using my tablet can show him projects I'm working on- usually for about an hour every week.I also have a ooma for calls in US had one for about 6 years works great here in Colorado and worked the same when I lived in upstate NY
I've had mine for a couple of years. It is on a battery backup to help protect it from power surges. I just bought another at this great price for my parents. That will get rid of their $30/month charge in their bundled package. With porting over their phone number they will be saving money by month 3.
OK, I pulled the trigger on a backup. Damn you meh... that makes 4 orders this month... what is this insanity! (also did the math (mehth?) on the orders... seems it's about 2:1 non-VMP:VMP orders if I figured it right -yes I AM a geek at heart !)
@rmeden That was previously the case for used Ooma boxes but is no longer true. Verified via an online chat with Ooma support several months ago. And this one is backed by Ooma directly anyway.

You call this a deal?
@jaremelz THIS. Is a deal.
@jaremelz It's not enough of one to sway me ... and it's your fault for that.
Now I only have to blame you for another 161 things to counter what I've thanked you for.
@narfcake
Déjà Meh.
Doesn't cost a bundle
Ooma, telo me no lies.
Ooma Telo? Perhaps Oomeh Hellno?
@heartny don't be a hater (or a hatter)
This seems like a pretty good price to me. I have the original Ooma, going strong for about 7 years now! Very happy with the purchase despite my paying 3X more so long ago. If mine died today, I'd get a new one, no doubt.
@alextse
Old Ooma stares from across the room nervously
@stoopkid
HA! But also the old units are grandfathered with ZERO monthly payments so I keep mine in fine condition. Now if the opposite were the situation, I'd off it in a heartbeat!
@alextse Now watch as Meh finally sells out today and your old Ooma dies tomorrow.
@lljk I worry about that every time there's a sale...
@alextse since they've only sold nine at this point, it looks like we might get another chance. I was wondering if they're selling them every 90 days, when the warranties run out...
@stinks Actually, I have no idea about the hardware quality of the Telos, only know that my original version (Hub) is built like a rock.
@alextse 40 months (and over 2 grand in savings) into my unit and it's still going strong. That being said, I pulled the trigger on this one today as 'insurance'. I mean WTF, it's the LOWEST PRICE EVER
Telo about it.
Telo all your crazy dreams
Let it know you need it,
Let it know how much it means
@rmeden thanks for channeling Billy Joel...
@rmeden
When you touch my weary Meh

Save for Christmas so your gift Recipient can "ring" in the new year on New Year's Day
Again?!?!?
@cengland0 Surprise!
@jaremelz I tawt I taw a puddy tat...I did, I did see a puddy tat...
Why is there a semi-opaque gradient at the top of today's homepage?
Can you move the numbers from TWO landline phones to this?
@ojohn Yes but you need their premier service if you have more than one phone number.
@uwacn What do you mean caller Id isn't included? I don't have premier and I see the phone number of who is calling every time.
Edit: Confirmed http://www.ooma.com/basic/
"Enjoy the convenience of caller-ID and call-waiting— at no extra charge."
@cengland0 Premier caller-id includes the name as well as the number. (well, an attempt at the name).

I wondered if I could port over my landline phone number and YES! Ooma porting checker
I already have an Ooma. Always afraid of it dying on me. Now I'll have a backup.
Has anyone ever activated a refurb Ooma purchased as a backup? I know you can't activate a used one without paying some high "connection" fee.
@rmeden That was previously the case for used Ooma boxes but is no longer true. Verified via an online chat with Ooma support several months ago. And this one is backed by Ooma directly anyway.
