FYI, what you’re looking at is C. Elegans (roundworm). I think we’re looking at it mating.
“Once he recognizes a hermaphrodite worm, the male nematode begins tracing the hermaphrodite with his tail until he reaches the vulval region. The male then probes the region with his spicules to locate the vulva, inserts them, and releases sperm.”
@cengland0 they’re up on the top of the front left and right speakers, firing upward.
I have reservations about this because I have vaulted ceilings with the peak running perpendicular to the screen. I think I’d get funky imaging with upward firing speakers.
@cengland0 The front speakers have speakers on top as well that fire upward. One speaker fires out toward where you sit, the other one projects towards the ceiling.
Aw, you went to far down the signal chain for me. I just was hoping for a surround receiver with a whole heck of a lot of HDMI inputs!
Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
@NotEd3k Yes, I was all “What the heck? Just speakers?” And I logged on to rave about how great Onkyo receivers are. I’ve had two in my life cause they last so dog-gone long. Onkyo speakers though? I might buy because I have this speaker fetish…
And are all these pics in black and white?
@wew Actually I would have been right OK with an Onkyo receiver. Been wanting one for years.
As for photos? Not B&W. “Super Chroma reduced high contrast!”
OK so I had no clue what this Dolby Atmos technology means. Like could I use it with a 1976 Pioneer receiver? (nope - sort of guessed that in advance).
Anyway if you haven’t been keeping up with developments (easiest way for me not to get a serious case of the “I wants” and have to then deprive myself by saying “no” is to try really hard not to know about the latest and greatest developments) this article might help.
@Yoda_Daenerys Tell me about it. I bought an Onkyo receiver going on a year ago and still haven’t pulled it out of the box because I’ve been waiting on speakers.
In my younger, single days, I would have jumped all over this. (Of course, these didn’t exist then – we did have stereo, at least; I’m not that old. ) But now, I have to pass. Dolby Atmos = up to 128 sound objects => 6 speakers => 2 ears (and only 1 of them at all any good still). Some how “lossless” content seems to be wasted on me. Ah well, that’s life.
You younger (and with more expendable resources) mehtizens, ENJOY.
Just want to say that I bought this when it was here last, and they are excellent speakers. That then prompted the very much more costly Atmos receiver, for which I was then obligated to buy new movies that are atmos enabled. Slippery slope indeed. But sounds amazing!
you guys totally missed the opportunity to make this the theme song of today’s deal
question: have you guys considered instituting a layaway plan? Because I would totally buy the speakers with a layaway plan. e.g.: $25 a week for every week you don’t buy one of the weeks deals would be withdrawn from your account and go towards your speaker layaway plan, when you reach your total of 194 the speakers will be shipped directly to you no middleman. thank you
@triplebud yes, but you pay for the privilege. plus, not everyone has or wants a credit card. (although i personally also don’t have use for a layaway plan here.)
Got one! Should pair nicely with my 1080p projector. Been hunting for a set of decent speakers for a while now, good timing! Now sell me a receiver damn you!!!
Huzzah! For once perfect timing for my new home theater set up–wanted them last time but our dang basement was far from ready to set up; now sell me a receiver dammit!
NOOOOPE. No more Onkyo for me. My meh TX-NR535 is sitting in the car waiting for me to pay fifty bucks to send it to Michigan for repair. It was defective on delivery – I just didn’t know enough about audio to realize that its behavior wasn’t normal.
Problem: It initially took a couple of minutes before sound gradually faded in. I grew up using an old hifi, and even though my 1990s rig didn’t do that, it just didn’t occur to me to worry. After a while, it was taking five minutes before sound gradually faded in. I didn’t realize it was taking longer. After a while longer, it was taking thirty minutes (or more) before sound sort of faded in. Finally, I thought “Hang on, this ain’t right.” Soooo … the delay’s on me.
Hypothesis: A fractured solder joint expands as unit warms up. (Shakier sub-hypothesis: Each time it contracts, it’s a bit more warped than before.)
Rage factor: The supposed carry-in warranty support center is 250 miles away and is only open 9-5 on weekdays. Hence shipping it to Michigan; if I have to put it in the mail, I’m gonna send it to the lead office.
@whogots years ago, A guy over at fatwallet helped me set up an onkyo 7.1 reciever, pre HDMI,—I drove him nutz and he left the forum…it turned out my receiver was bad and I had to send it back, (it was a refurbished I bought), but I got a new one and it works fine. That was like ten years ago–hang in there. It seemed like a huge pain to me, but it all worked out ok. I still feel bad for fireboltz though. I’m sorry you got a bad unit. Just my 2 cents.
Actually, maybe I can make up for driving fireboltz mad…if you need support, I’ll help you

Speak up
Hmmmm…do I want to buy this, or do I want to stay married? Hmmmmm…
Everyone knows the answer to that one, @eeterrific. Well, everyone rational, that is.
@haydesigner I’m still unsure
@eeterrific Always easier to ask forgiveness than permission, I always say.
(What? Am I getting a set? Hell, no. I’d be in SO MUCH TROUBLE!)

@rprussell Wow, that’s a h*ll of a GIF.
@SirLouie So not that terribly different from how humans do it…
@rprussell Speak for yourself, buddy! I’m very careful about where I put my spicules.
Is this a good deal?
@gertiestn
I think you mean to say 5.1 2-channel.
Not sure what a 5.1.2-channel would be.
@curtise this is actually correct as the Atmos is the .2.
@curtise https://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/dolby-atmos-speaker-setup/5-1-2-setups.html
@curtise Yes, I thought that was weird too but that’s exactly what the owner’s manual says.
@curtise 2 upward firing Atmos speakers. You could also have 5.1.1, or 7.1.2, for example.
@medz Since this doesn’t come with any ceiling speakers, where does the .2 come from in this system?
@cengland0 they’re up on the top of the front left and right speakers, firing upward.
I have reservations about this because I have vaulted ceilings with the peak running perpendicular to the screen. I think I’d get funky imaging with upward firing speakers.
@cengland0 Or upward firing
@cengland0 The front speakers have speakers on top as well that fire upward. One speaker fires out toward where you sit, the other one projects towards the ceiling.
@cengland0 the right and left front speakers have speakers mounted on the top as well as the front which are upward firing, hence the .2
@curtise Not sure what 5.1 2-channel would be.
Aw, you went to far down the signal chain for me. I just was hoping for a surround receiver with a whole heck of a lot of HDMI inputs!

@NotEd3k the sale is for speakers. You have receiver for sale?
Definitely not an impulse buy.
but are they a really good deal
Been a long time since I’ve seen someone write “grawlixes”… bravo
@haydesigner I’d never seen it before.
Man, I’ve been waiting months to get a shot at that atmos receiver again! I already have some speakers dammit
Speaker? I hardly know her!

beating a dead horse, sell the whole dealio a la carte
i don’t want to end up with atmos speakers, but no receiver, or visa versa
@Yoda_Daenerys Tell me about it. I bought an Onkyo receiver going on a year ago and still haven’t pulled it out of the box because I’ve been waiting on speakers.
Oh look… speakers!
Is it Hi-Fi though?
@medz This Fi is so Hi, it bounces right off the ceiling!
@medz No, but I’ll give you a high-five!

@phendrick I’m young enough to enjoy it. But I have 5.1 in the living room and in the bedroom. I don’t really have much reason to upgrade either.
Compare/contrast with 20-year-old Acoustimass cubes, someone, please?

@jerk_nugget oh i know. only kidding aka bring a jerk aka bored
@triplebud aka being on the internet! apologies for the seriousness carry on…~
A particularly good write-up today
But what if your music has been recorded in Dobly? (Or by Dobby?) I can’t breathe! It’s this oppressive Atmos-Fear!!
@MrNews Don’t panic, it will only last a day Atmos
Ugh. Why can’t you put out these deals at the start of the month, when I actually have money and questionable sense in how to spend it?
Atmos? Wasn’t that a Doctor Who or Sarah Jane Smith villain?
/giphy tom-baker-is-the-best-doctor-who
@TheMonkeyKing It was a car-exhaust retrofit system used by a group of Doctor Who villains.

that fifty bucks shipping sucks though

I was in the process of buying and it went away…
