Just looked this up to find out what the hell you are talking about. Never heard about this until now but it does remind me of a movie I watched recently called Nerve.
@cengland0 Last year I calculated how long it would take to fly from NYC to Iceland on a pre-1970 working supercomputer, totally cool. Hooray for living in Seattle!
And I got to wallpaper my room with pictures of my nose…
It was such fun last year, but I surely did not do as much as some of you did. Have we thought of going legit this year and really counting our team in the competition?
@readnj I think you need to be able to work full-time on it, and actually have a distributed team, rather than just anyone who wants to do it. I’m not sure i can do that, but there’s no reason we can’t have two teams- one for serious competition, and a casual team.
It’s come to my attention that some of you still haven’t joined gishwhes… Now, I know, I know you’ve heard me say this before, but this year more than ever, it’s so important that you get in on this year’s Hunt because this may be the last GISHWHES. It is my intention to continue something gish-like going forward, but this may be the last iteration of GISHWHES-as-we-know-it.
Same question. Are we doing this? Registration closes in a week. I thought I might pass this year because I just don’t feel ready. (Health has been getting worse.) But I don’t want to miss the last one!
@christinewas@fernikfurra@sammydog01@readnj@mikibell
I have not set up a team, and will gracefully pass this on to anyone who wishes to do so.
Maybe @katylava will come back to run the team?
I hope someone does run a team this year, but it won’t be me- sorry for the late notice.
This could be an ideal time to drag in some of the new Mehployees to the team.
I went ahead and registered and started a thread to see if anyone was going to do it this year, even had a pic of the tree I planted last year as it’s still thriving. Something happened and I lost everything I typed. It was after 1a and I was tired so I didn’t start over and never got a chance to go back to it. I’m in as long as it’s casual, or as long as I can be casual. I received a promotion at work and there’s no way I can take any time off that week and I’m busier than ever. That said,I loved, loved, loved last year. Our team might not have won the hunt but it was the best and I’d love to do it again. I’m not sure what’s going on with the “last GISHWSHES as you know it” ominous statements but I would hate to miss out if it is indeed the last one.
@mehbee As far as I can tell, if you like how Gishwhes has been done in previous years, this is the last time it will use that format. Future years will make unspecified changes to the format. It certainly seems like there will be future Gishwhes.
@dashcloud Well yeah I got that much but some of the times, as you know it was not added to the statement that this could be the last hunt. Not that I don’t understand, this has to be a lot of work for everyone involved especially Misha who has a busy full time job on top of everything else.
@mehbee Losing a post is always frustrating. Sorry that happened to you. I’ve created the team, now. BreakfastOctopi. I will write a post soon, tagging participants from the past years and giving specific registration info.
I’m tentatively considering joining this year, if y’all have room. I’ll happily go to standby if there are others either
more enthusiastic
otherwise more energetic
with more time (things have been crazy busy with the job and we’ve gotten involved in other crazy busy shit)
or
who’ve never done it
So, seriously, if you’ve never done gishwhes and/or are at all curious . . .
just DO IT
It’s the kind of thing every human should do at least once–every human that I want to know. Oh, some of the humans I like would surely be hesitant, but I think they’d kick ass once they got into it. Now I’m thinking of, like, my elders (yes, I still have those, ancient though I be). The ones I respect (e.g., my dad) would be amazing, but he’d take lots of coaxing and, okay, probably would only do one or two of the items.
My only reservation is that I felt rushed and that I didn’t give as much to it as I wanted before. If I do it this year, I want to take at least a day off. I’d love to take the whole week, but I’m not sure I can swing that.
So, yeah, please keep me in the loop and let me know if there’s room. I’m actually pretty fine with not officially being on the team. I’ll stalk, ahem, look on and cheer aggressively from the sidelines. That might be better.
@joelmw Considering the size of the team and how soon the deadline is, I am just going to say that there is definitely room and we need you. Or… want you to be on the team.
Because I have some knowledge of how the competitive teams actually work, I have absolutely no interest in being truly competitive. We aren’t going to mobilize hundreds of people around the world to help us complete tasks. We’re just getting our shit together a couple days before registration closes. If we’re lucky, we’ll just manage to pull together a full team before it’s too late.
OK guys I’m out of the country but will be back tomorrow- I can register a new breakfast octopi team if no one else has registered a team. Registration deadline is in 3 days 12 hours so sign up folks- we are gonna do this!
I obviously want to, but am too lazy and busy looking for an apartment to figure this out. Would someone please let me know exactly what to do since we don’t have a team?
@cation Yay! I really enjoyed having you on the team last year. As soon as we have a team created, we will let you know what you need to do and where you need to do it to get registered with the team.
You should already have an account, so you can just log in. Complete the registration process for this year. When you are done, you will have the option to join a team. The team name is BreakfastOctopi
I got that email too!
Maybe the wonderful @katylava will return to bring the team to glory once more?
That would be the best. I am so excited! I had such a great time last year.
I received the email but haven’t had a chance to read it! Very excited to see some of the challenges wiîl be

@cengland0 We have had a team for the past two years.

@cation You did some cool stuff!
@cation I didn’t know you could fly to Iceland on a supercomputer.

@sammydog01 It was just a suggestion since the team was so awesome.
Did you all see this comment??

Sooooo, do we have a team this year? I’m all signed up, but the old breakfastoctopi team name isn’t bringing anything up…
@fernikfurra I just created the team, so you should be able to find it now. BreakfastOctopi again.
@christinewas oh awesome!
Bump
Same question. Are we doing this? Registration closes in a week. I thought I might pass this year because I just don’t feel ready. (Health has been getting worse.) But I don’t want to miss the last one!
I’m tentatively in if we are reviving the team.
@christinewas I’ve missed you.
@christinewas Hi! Me too! Let me know someone.
@Barney Thanks! I’ve missed you, too. (Even though I went and disappeared.)

@dashcloud @christinewas @fernikfurra @sammydog01 @readnj @mikibell @katylava
I would love to participate again this year if we end up with a team. Work has finally calmed down so I think I could contribute more than last year.
@dashcloud That makes me sad…are you going to be able to be on the team at least? What about @woodhouse?
Let’s do this thing. Anyone want to step up to lead the team?
I might be able, if no one else wants to do it, but I would probably have to delegate a lot of specific responsibilities.
@christinewas I’ll split the job with you- I’ll need some help with computery things.
@sammydog01 Sounds good.

@mehbee Did you start the “Meh” team?
@stardate820926 No, I signed up for the basic level just so I was in and then left the website.
@mehbee ok cool. I just wanted to make sure before I joined haha
@mehbee Losing a post is always frustrating. Sorry that happened to you. I’ve created the team, now. BreakfastOctopi. I will write a post soon, tagging participants from the past years and giving specific registration info.
