@AaronLeeJohnson If I can’t reasonably get there by driving, and there’s no train service, I’m not going. And there’s no way that I’m going to risk having to come back through an ICE checkpoint, so international travel is right out until further notice.
@AaronLeeJohnson@werehatrack I prefer trains too, but more for the convenience and privacy–no getting to the station/airport hours early, no security lines, no fingerprint taking, no biometric anything else. I’m taking a ten-day cross-country Amtrak trip next month for the fun of it. One of the new and possibly exciting parts of it is that I’ll be taking brand-new NextGen Acela trains on the Boston-DC Northeast Corridor.
These look very like the Tucci cases from a while ago:
I took the large one and the small one on a month long trip - the large one is very large, and it was a slight challenge to keep it under weight. It almost didn’t survive the trip - one of the wheels broke, and the plastic where it was mounted was starting to crack when I got home.
The small one did fine though.
For $130, not really complaining. Also, if you get the red one, it’s really easy to see which is yours on the carousel when you go to pick up.
Spinner wheels are okay-ish on smaller bags, but I’ll never buy another large suitcase that has them. On uneven surfaces, they’re finger-breakers. Plus, the spinner design inherently reduces the inner volume of the bag relative to the total outer dimensions; a drag-behind permissible-size carry-on will hold more.
That said, I was 100% unable to find any new drag-behind bags when I last needed one, and I ended up grabbing a used one at Goodwill and doing some repairs on it. (I still have it.)
Bought these when they were here last time. The carry on has a ‘hidden’ compartment to slide your valuables in. Was one of our favorite suitcases until Qatar Airways busted one of the wheels of the largest one on our last transatlantic flight… Got 81$ for it. Zipper isn’t as sturdy as our Samsonite but well worth the 130$. In for a set.
@MrGoodGuy Sold by Meh, they’d likely be refurbs or new-old-stock, a good number of which had batteries with a >70% loss of capacity. (Meh would not be informed of this, or course, and the reality would only become apparent after they were shipped.) (Not all refurbs are terrible, but it’s hard to know what they’re like before they’re in hand.)
@phendrick@werehatrack
Seems truly a shame that your interaction with women has left you so jaded. Hopefully you’ll both meet a few women in your life that will change your opinion.
@chienfou@werehatrack
Thanks for the optimism.
I have met some nice ladies. But in most cases their apparent baggage has been hurting them more than me, IMO. Little I can do to assuage that.
Guess I hadn’t realized before how high a standard my late wife had set as to being gentle, kind, and meeting life head on with a great sense of humor, until she couldn’t. Her belief in family and God had been much stronger than mine and much of what had attracted me to her. Hate to admit it, but I don’t expect to find all that again.
Really have been missing her. Of course, looking back, that process of lessening relationship had started before the actual diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Then 4 years at home, 5 in memory care, and finally her death a little more than a year ago. Losing her was a very gradual process that I unfortunately got too used to.
@chienfou@werehatrack Yes, baggage accumulates, much like arterial plaque. Or, maybe more like Meh purchases. I’m older, so probably have more of both.
@chienfou@werehatrack IDK that I’m misogynistic. I see most guy’s baggage. It just isn’t so very likely to roll around and hit me in the shins, so don’t care so much.
@chienfou@werehatrack inagine how much baggage you would have, had you been a woman your whole life. Its been, a year I think (apologies if I miscalculated)?
Those of us who spent our formative years as female dealt with so much more than you can imagine. Unfortunately it is part of growing up and adjustting to allow boys to flurish. (Ie they pull your hair because they like you, dont wear that you will give them the wrong idea, etc)
@tinamarie1974 No, that I understood (from an inapproachable distance) why women can “have baggage”, as you stated. From my side, consider the fact that I had to spend entirely too many years watching the even-worse behaviors that were visible when it was “just the guys”. I am now in the position of having absolutely no illusions about what goes on over there; I lived in the middle of it, and wasn’t happy about what I was seeing - but could do nothing about it. I have only one experience set to work with. It is what it is.
@werehatrack I have insight into the “boys club”, having 14 uncles (several close enough to my age) and a large number of male cousins (around 20) that I spent a great deal of time around.
May be part of the reason I am so headstrong and outspoken. I also have a mother who grew up with four brothers and saw the dynamic first hand. She is a firecracker too!
Men and boys live a very different life. Especially white ones. Not trying to be political, just making a statement.
I lived in the middle of it, and wasn’t happy about what I was seeing - but could do nothing about it.
Sorry… but I think that’s b*******. Not calling out people who are being boorish, misogynistic, racist, sexist, or whatever makes you complicit. At the very least you should remove yourself and then not let yourself be put back in that position by choosing a better circle of people to hang out with.
I also believe that you are talking about something other than what I consider baggage. I’ve seen lots of men who have emotional baggage from prior relationships as well as military service or job-related traumas due to career choices. It is not only a double x chromosome thing
I really don’t have confidence in these plastic suitcases; I have heard so many stories about the plastic cracking. Doesn’t matter what you pay if it ends up cracking!

I am scared of being on a plane now. I’m riding the train these days.

@FLyMyPretty My “red” set ended up being raspberry, almost fuchsia, and whew! I know which is mine.
@brainmist @FLyMyPretty My check-through bag is burnt orange for the same reason.

@werehatrack
Thanks for the gift idea for that one person I know.
@werehatrack If you have to walk a long way with a large heavy bag, even on fairly uneven surfaces, the spinner wheels are a godsend.
Also, you’re supposed to roll them on the ground, not your fingers
@werehatrack it really depends on the quality of the bag. I have a few Away bags and no issues. They are amazing.

Finally, an homage to The Grand Budapest Hotel – and take your hands off my lobby boy!
Hey meh!! Get your hands on some of these bad boys and I guarantee you’ll sell out in under an hour!! (if the Price is Right!!)

@MrGoodGuy Sold by Meh, they’d likely be refurbs or new-old-stock, a good number of which had batteries with a >70% loss of capacity. @MrGoodGuy @werehatrack I think their batteries were a PITA to replace.
I was hoping for a larger model, but at that point, it’s just a Mini Cooper (SE)
@MrGoodGuy @pakopako Maybe closer to a Citroen Ami.
@MrGoodGuy @pakopako @werehatrack or maybe a PT Cruiser.
Good luck to Meh in selling these.
All the ladies of suitable age that i meet already have plenty of baggage. And yes, it’s hard-sided.
@phendrick As the miles accumulate, so does the baggage. It’s a thing.
@phendrick @werehatrack
Seems truly a shame that your interaction with women has left you so jaded. Hopefully you’ll both meet a few women in your life that will change your opinion.
@chienfou Erm. I am one, but I’ve seen the reasons why the baggage accumulates for a lot longer than that has been true.
@werehatrack
Still sounds misogynestic. I know plenty of guys with lots of baggage…
@chienfou @werehatrack

@tinamarie1974 That’s pretty much my point.
@werehatrack that you would have had baggage? Sorry but your post didnt read that way.
@tinamarie1974 No, that I understood (from an inapproachable distance) why women can “have baggage”, as you stated. @chienfou You weren’t me, you weren’t there, and you have no fucking idea. That’s all I’m going to say.
I have an Olympia set that’s been used by my whole family when traveling for over 5 years, and they’re still holding up great.
YMMV
Does the Aries come with the net as illustrated in the video?
@mclyhb These do not come with the net
@mclyhb @troy

Wow, Mehlta Airlines sounds almost as bad as Spirit. Well… almost.
@danoinct Or worse, Ryan Air…
