Ohio couple told again to get rid of 'support' goats

whaaaaat?
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio couple who say their three goats have helped ease the husband’s depression has been ordered once again to get rid of them.
The Blade reports that Justin and Amanda Held were told during a court hearing Friday in Bowling Green they must remove the animals from their property for a misdemeanor zoning violation to be dismissed.
It’s not the first time the Helds and the village of Grand Rapids have butted heads over the goats. The couple removed the goats last year after the village cited them but brought them back earlier this year when a doctor certified them as emotional support animals.
The village cited the couple again in September.
Amanda Held says that while they’ll comply, she’ll continue fighting for the goats and her husband’s happiness.

Let me just say this about that: Wood County, OH can be a very strange place. It looks all fields and John Deere green, but a number of my relatives and their progeny have lived there for 180 years. My mom was born there. Things like alligators, goats and families featured in the InCryptid novels live there.
@OldCatLady
I didn’t know alligators went that far north.
Immigrant? Or native?

@f00l News reports said it was somebody’s pet that got too big. It’s possible. The entire area used to be called the Black Swamp, and wasn’t drained until the late 19th century.

I wonder what the zoning issue is.
In Louisville, Kentucky, as long as they are on at least a half acre of land and are fenced in, goats, chickens, ducks, etc. are allowed on residential property. Bigger animals like horses and mules need at least an acre.
I discovered this when looking into getting chickens, an idea I abandoned when I saw how much work it would be and how it would interfere with vacations.
@craigthom Most townships in OH have their own zoning pecularities, and they can change depending on how close to the next township your property is. Wood County is historically litigious; scanning old newspapers is hilarious, except that my family’s names keep showing up.
@craigthom You can’t take your support chickens with you on vacation?
@therealjrn
@craigthom
At the Paris Hilton? Sure!
@therealjrn emotional support animals are not sevice animals legally they are pets. Legally service animals must have been trained to provide a specific service .
@CaptAmehrican You’re not the boss of me. It’s a sad day when a man can’t take his chickens with him on vacation.
@CaptAmehrican
THANK YOU! I always knew there was some distinction between the legitimate and the bullshit, and this will help me to articulate that.
@melonscoop
Be careful,though. It’s an ADA violation to ask about the person’s disability in context of a buisiness. You can only ask what the animal has been trained to do. Also, only dogs and miniature horses can be service animals per the guidelines.
@mtb002 yes the owner can only be asked "what specific service has this animal been trained to perform ? " If trained in any specific service it is a servce animal. But emotional support is not a thing animals are trained to do.
@craigthom They probably live in a condo.
@CaptAmehrican
@mtb002
In a business context, what controls can the business owner or manager place on the presence of trained vs “informal” service animals?

It is odd in this country that you can take a dead animal with you almost anywhere you want to go (fur, leather, bone, meat), but live ones are banned almost everywhere. Humans suck.
Wearing a leather belt on an elevator seems a whole lot less disruptive to me than leading a steer onto one, personally
@matthew If only we could find a singing cowboy to explain it to us.
@therealjrn the idea of a singing cowboy explaining stuff to someone has been coopted by john oliver in his fox news ads catheter cowboy.
@CaptAmehrican The World needs more Americans like John Oliver…what?
That would be a great journalist name “The Blade.”
You know what make great emotional support animals? Dogs.

@sammydog01 Dogs named Sammy?
@therealjrn Nope, those are dicks.
