@bugger@fuzzmanmatt@ircon96@Kyeh Honestly that is the one thing that makes the ‘beautiful game’ of ‘football’ as they call it everywhere but here, virtually unwatchable. And I’m in a area where we have some star teams like Portland Timbers and Thorns. In general the ‘flopping’ doesn’t seem too bad in the US most of the time but get to some World Cup events and it seems to be the ‘art’ national teams perform the most. And yes, it’s true that teams from Europe and South America do have some very good ‘football’ skills as well, but the artistic expression of flopping seems to be the main thing that often gets them wins.
@bugger@fuzzmanmatt@Kyeh@pmarin I must admit i don’t watch the matches (I’m more into tennis & the equestrian sports), but i always find the overly dramatic highlights (or, more accurately, lowlights) hilarious! It’s especially crazy that the officials actually fall for it, although it’s probably willful gullibility in many cases, for all we know.
@bugger@fuzzmanmatt@ircon96@pmarin
I once saw a clip of a ref “flopping” when one of the players got right up in his face. Hilarious, and I thought it was very clever, but I guess he got in trouble for it.
@Kyeh Two of my kids are soccer freaks, and I’m getting less eager to come up with thoughtful Christmas gifts. The convergence of those facts led to this purchase…
@Kyeh@shahnm I had one kid who was a soccer freak. OMG I hated traveling teams. Up in northern ID we’d drive 8+ hours to tournaments, games… One time we were about 45 miles from Glacier National Park. We could see the mountains of the park in the distance. About half of us were rooting for them to lose on Saturday so we could go to Glacier before we’d have to go home. Damn kids were in the finals Sunday at 4pm. We got back about 1:30 in the morning. Kids had to go to school at 7:30am and I taught at 8am. Sucked big time.
@allthatisjosh@blaineg Maybe she is looking at the Italian player rolling on the ground in pretend pain holding his ankle even though he was never touched. And going ‘Meh, what can you do?, this is the way we do the game’
@detailer Well you get 45 minutes per half, plus the randomly-decided ‘extra time’ which has no official basis other than what the ref feels at the moment.
An Olympic football match at the 2012 UK Olympics was the most boring thing I’ve ever seen. One of the teams got a lead, and spent half the game not playing, just keeping the ball away from the other team.
@blaineg Aside from the artful ‘flopping’ already discussed here, yes, the game of ‘keep-away’ which I thought was the most annoying playground game as a school kid is the other thing that renders this ‘beautiful game’ almost unwatchable. They need a ‘shot clock’ like basketball has.

I got a kick out of this offering!
Can we get a banana for scale, or a real soccer ball.
@hchavers It’s about 2x1 if the Amazon listing is to be trusted.
@ergomeh @hchavers 2x1 bananas?
@hchavers In one of the pictures, it’s sitting on a board that looks to my untrained eye like a 1 by 6.
“””””GOAL”””””!!!
@bugger Shouldn’t that be
“GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!”
@bugger @Kyeh I’m running around ripping my shirt off right now!!!
@bugger @fuzzmanmatt @Kyeh … And I’m flopping to the ground in an attempt to get you a red card. Or, yellow would be okay, too.

I love that one girl is clearly rolling dice.
@allthatisjosh Maybe’s she’s Italian, and is just talking with her hands.
@allthatisjosh @blaineg Looks more like
“I don’t get it - why would anyone want to play with this thing?”
to me.
@allthatisjosh @blaineg Maybe she is looking at the Italian player rolling on the ground in pretend pain holding his ankle even though he was never touched. And going ‘Meh, what can you do?, this is the way we do the game’
Oh, look…a field small enough that someone might actually score a goal in the next half hour.
