@Moose Great find, for those new to the genre that was a pretty representative sample, if you can believe it most are even less interesting. Quite a teaser at the end, is there actually video of him testing it out.? I was cringing once he unsheathed it waiting for someone to lose a finger.
Occasionally, they can be helpful when the manufacturer is light on the details when it comes to included accessories. For example, you may not be sure if a device comes with a specific cable. (HDMI vs composite vs rca) Also, you can't always trust the highly photoshopped marketing photos.
I agree with @collin1000 and @medz unboxing videos are only good for verifying it contains what you need (but you can often find someone who has typed it out on their blog) OR if you sent someone you know something funny or to see a child's reaction.
@jqubed True, but photos won't show how it was packed. "Oh, the cord is UNDER the plastic tray in the packaging." Also, video can show many angles if you're curious about what ports a device has on the back. That'd take lots of photos to show the same amount of info.
"Growing trend?" Unboxing hit its peak with this guy.
@Moose How can anyone be so awkward?

@Moose how are his arms sunburned but his hands still translucent?
@escowhat excessive masturbating with sunscreen?
I have never had an interest in watching or filming an unboxing video.

@chellemonkey Seems like a photo could convey the same info for the first case in a lot less time.

I'm really having trouble understanding how this is a "thing".
Unboxing videos of bags of crap were fun to watch.
