NOT SCAVENGER HUNT:: upgrade options...
2So... Everyone probably already knows I've switched to t-mobile. What they may(or may not) know already is that I'm getting a little tired of the service... Yes a lot of you warned me... but I called them today. The official answer is that they are working on the towers and upgrading them from 2G to LTE. Which I've seen a lot more LTE signals when I get signal... But they have confirmed that most of the signal will be on the other band that works better. The other band being the band that apple is adding into the 6S but isn't in the 6. So. Do I upgrade or do I not. I am thinking no, as I'd prefer to get the 7 when it comes out over the 6s, More options, plus I JUST got 1/2 of this phone paid off... still have 1/2 to go... What is everyone's thoughts? How often do you guys upgrade your phones? Before someone asks... No I don't want android. I have a mac air(LOVE it but would prefer a pro with dedicated graphics,) an iPad mini, and have had the following for phones over the past 6 or so years... Blackberry bold 9000 iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, Microsoft Lumia 640, Microsoft Lumia 635.

T-Mobile?
I'm upgrading from an iPhone 5 to a 6s Plus (planning to preorder tomorrow).. So that shows about how often I upgrade. As much as I'd love to ride the cutting edge, as long as my 5 was working fine I couldn't justify upgrading earlier.. But in your case it isn't working fine.. I would seriously consider the upgrade.. Also, the 6 (if in good shape) can sell for a good value still, so you might be about to recoup your loss. Google for a list of sites where you can sell it.. I'm going with Amazon on mine, and getting about $140 in credit for an ancient phone. Although I think Verizon just said they'd give me $200 credit for it, so I might have to go there instead.
This is a hard question to answer because their are a TON of factors that come into play. Mainly, your usage, what you do on your phone, and your physical location. I, for instance, and rarely in a place where I don't have access to a wifi network. So the 2G/LTE isn't much of a concern for me. Though, I also have LTE and have had it for at least 4 years(Whenever the thunderbolt was released?). It surprises me that some networks still have 2G. I'd recommend changing providers to someone with better data coverage first if it's that much of a concern for you... alas you have already discussed this.
Some questions you should ask yourself:
@Bogie yes right not disposable income... Let's say I have a 1 yr old. ;) yes I moved from AT&T to T-mobile and the first month was awesome. Now not so much. I don't care about the data as much. I do care about being able to make calls in emergency situations. It roams back to AT&T but not nicely. I may look into one of the prepaid AT&T mvno's or just switch back to AT&T and cash in on the 300 switch back credit. I hated having a 5 line $300 phone bill though. And my wife uses about 10 GB of LTE data/month.
Are you on the "JUMP" thing? Check your my-tmobile page, I think they might let you upgrade to the new one before you pay off the old one (when you trade it in).
@thismyusername I have a credit card bill from Apple for the iPhone 6 Plus. :( I thought of the jump but I don't like paying a fee to do that. I'd rather buy it out and flip on Craigslist. I own this one free and clear according to carriers. But my credit card bill speaks to a different tune :).
Since I went to iPhones I tend to upgrade on the totally new model cycle. Went from a 4 to a 5 to a 6+ (which you already know.). I've skipped the S models. I'm sure I'll go to the 7 next year. I think your better option is seeing if you can still jump ship to another provider. Yes, we told you so. :)
@cinoclav I'm just moving to my 2nd iphone, but I think I'm going to try and ride the S line.. Seems like the have more internal upgrades, and I care more about that than design..
@kadagan Each model tends to include more internal updates but the 'all new' models also include the external updates and major design changes. The 7 will build upon the 6S. It's really an endless loop, always getting better. For me the 6+ was an easy decision as I really like the size.
@cinoclav My wife was on the S track and I was on the regular track upgrading every 1-2 years depending on what upgrade offers AT&T gave me. (you can see which ones I went to) I liked it when I had the regular then wife got the S, I got the next one and she got to pick which cases she preferred, her current one or my old one. However, I've recently started being a beta tester for New Trent. Not all of their stuff is good... but for free I'm willing to test things and a few of them I still use. Others I have ended up recycling (one thing they say is you can't sell it. I give some away when I don't like them unless they are total shit.)
@sohmageek Well, next time they give you a 6+ waterproof case to try and you feel like giving it away... ;)
You might research into T-Mobile "Customer Retention" practices on google. I've never used them so don't know but if they do anything like Comcast, threatening to depart for cause can trigger some interesting discount offers. Maybe even get them to do a phone trade-in since the base problem is with their infrastructure.
Maybe...
My wife and I ordered a pair of 6S phones, but we're upgrading from 4S phones. Four years (but the phones have been great).
@duodec When I talked to them the other day, I brought up issues with service, and they admitted it is their issue. It's due to upgrading towers in my area. I'm still pretty impressed with their service being that there isn't a single t-mobile store in the state. That's when they also told me that the service will probably be the 700 MHZ band as that's what they are trying to upgrade their whole service to. It penetrates buildings better. I was told could take 1 month could take 3, 6 or more. I won't deal with this for 6 months. But I may end up moving some lines around to check other service providers. I had AMAZING service the first month, yes most of it was 2G but with 2G I can place and receive phone calls. ALSO iOS 9 only improved the service (different carrier settings with the options in iOS 9.) I am debating about going 9.1 or waiting the 3 days and getting 9 GM when it comes out (they didn't give us a chance to get 9 GM on the public beta route.)
Finally they did say that if there were issues with service once the upgrades have been completed (up to 6+ months) they could work something out to help subsidize an iPhone 6s+.
