@Kyeh Well not as chilly as when I worked in NW Ontario one winter and daily the high was around -20F and the low ranged from -60F to -40F. Of course when I went home for christmas in the snowbelt it was -5F and that seemed positively tropical in comparison. I was shoveling snow with no hat (except my ears were covered) and my jacket was unzipped.
Here in west Texas, we got our first freeze of the season this morning, after an 80* high on Wensday.
On the plus side, it should ripen the chile pequins in my yard.
@lonocat I love chili pequins! My cousin used to grow them and dry them, ground up on eggs they’re delicious. I’ve wondered if I could get them to grow next door in LA, and if I could, then if I would actually get any or if the birds would get em all.
@Cerridwyn@f00l I remember when I lived there one of the rare “hard freezes” in Bay Area. Hard freeze there means just down to about 20F (+, not minus -) and staying around freezing or below for a day or two. Enough for people’s plumbing to break since nothing was designed to handle that. Lots of broken pipes and faucets.
I’ll just say the snow was deep enough to shut down the mall early yesterday and all day today. I am seeing 22 1/2 inches officially but closer to 30 at my house.
Cleared the driveway yesterday and couldn’t tell today. Going to try again tomorrow but another storm is expected to drop at least another 12-24 inches.
It is absolutely gorgeous unless you have to go outside. Currently 22 degrees and feels like 7 but clear. Main roads have reopened this evening. Skiers are ecstatic
Mall closed Sunday again. Schools are cancelling classes up through Wednesday. So far not much accumulation today but there is still time. I shoveled a path to the street and uncovered the fire hydrant. Darn snow blower decided to leak halfway up the driveway.
Actually had a frost overnight Friday which was the final blow for my few remaining jalapeno and cherry tomato plants. Also think my plumeria took a hit. We covered it last night but that may be akin to locking the barn door after the horse has escaped.
Spent the last couple of days inside a lot more than I wanted to. We should have time today to prep the yard a little bit better and protect a few plants. Plus I need to spend some time in the shop reorganizing things and getting ready for winter. Don’t really expect the freezing weather to stick around more than a couple of days.
I always turn off the house heat before bed, and if I need a morning pick me up, I have an electric heater under my bed.
Well, it dipped below freezing and I jump started myself. Waddled up in layers to the kitchen and turned on my laptop… Except the laptop wouldn’t start. Looks the kitchen got too cold for the hardware. Had to take the hair dryer to it for a bit before it would start up (and then the CPU fan went on overdrive like the thing was melting; odd to feel frozen air coming out of the laptop).
After a reboot to reassure the basic i/o tests would complete, the thing became a thigh warmer as usual.
@pakopako this is curious. How cold was it? A computer should boot up below freezing.
The one thing I can relate is I used to shut the heat down to like 45 at night and the oven temp sensor did not like that range. I had to warm it up to get the ignitor to function. But it was toward a laundry room on a garage wall. Gas. It was not designed for that.
I guess I could see an iffy/bad solder joint/contact being temp sensitive

We were 34 this morning in the arm pit of the nation. It’s maybe a 2.5 hour drive to the Gulf of Mexico from where I live.
@Kidsandliz Wow, a rare chilly day, huh?

@Kidsandliz No, I meant for where you live now!

@lonocat I first read that as chili penguin as opposed to pequin, which is a pepper. I need more coffee.
Let’s see if AI has my sense of thought this morning:
/showme a pot of chili with a penguin inside.
@lonocat @narfcake You do have a heightened preoccupation with penguins, it seems.
@Kyeh @lonocat There’s a Wooter who has a desire to cook and eat one – and I’ve read way too many of her posts, thus being conditioned.
@Kyeh @lonocat @narfcake
@lonocat @narfcake me too. LOL. But I broke my ankle and they gave me drugs. Its so cold snow is on the ground.

It was 39° when I was at Harbor Freight this morning. It was before 7am. Yes, there was a line. Yes, for the mini toolboxes.
FWIW, I checked out at 7:01 am.
@narfcake glad I missed it. Is the mini toolbox kind-of like the mini Trader Joe’s bags that everyone buys up the first day they come out?
@narfcake @pmarin
Kind of this season’s Stanley cup I believe…
38° is winter?
@blaineg
; )
I just don’t like it the first time each year I have to acclimate to colder temps
so I thought I’d whine about it
What is this winter of which you speak
Today’s temp was around 77
@Cerridwyn
Yeah. We know. California. sigh.
@f00l of course. Bestest state. No winter unless you want it then you just go up in the mountains.

I absolutely love living in the San Diego area

@speediedelivery
30 inches of snow is a significant amount! I can remember those days from my time in Colorado Wisconsin and Minnesota.

yekoP is DEFINITELY loving the first snowfall!
