@Kidsandliz it cracks me up when I think about high school and locker searches where kids were throwing pagers and lighters over the fence. NO ONE had a cell phone at that point. I think we had one for the car. The bag phone. And it had better have been an emergency if you were using it.
@sillyheathen In my college classroom I had a bag labeled cell phone jail where their phones landed if they were messing around on it. I’d answer ringing phones with, “Hello this is the faculty member of X class. The person whose phone this is can’t come to the phone right now as they are in class. Their phone is in cell phone jail.”. That stopped that really quickly. Only took 1 or 2 phone answering and word got around.
Some were smart enough to turn off their phones before putting them in cell phone jail (that being said if they had a sick kid at home I let them keep their phone but they needed to talk on it in the hall - and yes sometimes they lied about that. Play on the phone when you said you had a sick kid and it was in cell phone jail. You could tell as they’d be looking at their crotch with both hands below the desk playing on their phones.
@Kidsandliz@sillyheathen I had one in college because I had a long commute with a hoopty car. But it was in the days of peak and off peak calling and I think my plan allowed 20 min of peak calls. Strictly for emergencies, which occured at least once a month lol
It was one of those grey bricks w the plastic antenna.
@rockblossom True story: I was out sick the week we did the 7 times tables. For years (decades maybe) I couldn’t do 7’s instantly in my head like I could the others, I had to think them through much more slowly.
@Thumperchick I was the opposite. She sits in the back and doesnt raise her hand. She will not speak unless we call on her, but she always knows the answer.
@Star2236 I only missed one day in K-12 when two of us decided to try to fake being sick (I was in first grade). Had tonsils out in 11th. Otherwise I missed no school.
How about when people say school should learn how to file taxes?
They taught you how to read and how to do math, what more do you need? Plus, when you’re fresh out of high school, your taxes are so easy. All you need is a 1040A.
Now that I’m XX years beyond high school, there’s no way I could still use tax education from when I was in high school for today’s tax laws.
And these days: “Yes they did. You were messing around on your cell phone.”.

@Kidsandliz @sillyheathen meanwhile, some of us had emergency quarters in our purses or when I was little, two dimes in my penny loafers.

College was almost 50 yrs ago… So, nope.
@chienfou @Kidsandliz @sillyheathen @tinamarie1974 Yep, no cell phones back in the dark ages. And yet, somehow we survived…

FIFY:
@chienfou @Kidsandliz @macromeh @tinamarie1974 I concur.
I was out sick that week with the flu.

Oh they told me. Every report card said something along the lines of, “TC does great on tests, but talks too much.”

@Kidsandliz Did you go to the school where your mother taught?
@Kidsandliz @Star2236 @kyeh
Yeah, I was that ‘weird’ kid that liked school. I rarely missed a day either.
@Kyeh She wasn’t teaching when I was a kid, only before we were born and after all but the youngest was out of the house.
@Kidsandliz I see. I had a friend whose mother was a teacher at the school he attended! He couldn’t get away with anything.
