Thing is, it’s not necessarily an NPR reference, because Will Shortz is the puzzle editor for the NY Times, so if you’re talking about Wordle, which is owned by the NYT, it’s probably less about NPR and more about the Times.

@cinoclav agree! If I recall when it was mentioned that he was damaged I suggested a fundraiser to cover his “hospital bill” if they took him to be repaired. Im sure lots of folks would chip in

@accumulator - Will Shortz is back, but you can tell he is recovering from a stroke. He’s doing really well though, and sounding strong.

@cinoclav I thought maybe they finally found Irk stuffed in a drawer somewhere and his face is now permanently mangled.
Or, they’re worried someone will take him out so they have a puppet-double standing in for him at all his public appearances.

@cinoclav some time ago they admitted that there was signifigant wear and tear on him, making him quite fragile.
