Have one of these and a Roomba. The Neato Botvac wins. The old Roomba goes around the house randomly and sometimes doesn’t find the base to recharge. The Neato systematically plans the cleaning and only goes over the floor one time.
Agreed. I’ve owned both, and like the Neato better. A bit louder than a Roomba, but that’s because the Neato is actually vacuuming, instead of sweeping like the Roomba.
@haydesigner The Roomba actually vacuums as well. There is an exhaust fan in the dustbin which provides suction to suck up what the sweeper stirs up.
[Long ago, they did have a sweep only model - it may have been the Shop model.]
Got one in a fuko and it pleases me greatly. Its orderly approach to cleaning the floor seems much more efficient than Roomba’s random bouncing.
Unfortunately a bearing seized at the end of the beater bar and melted a plastic piece and it’s been sitting waiting for me to fix it. I’m not quite lazy enough to buy another one rather than fix the old one.
@djslack@djslack You got a Neato in a fuku? Sheesh. The best thing I ever got was a womans’ sleeping bag. I’m 6’2, and my female partner is a dedicated camper with bags for all seasons, so I couldn’t use it or even trade it for something. I ended up taking it to work and putting it in the free pile.
(But, hey, back to the Neato, even with a bad beater bar bearing isn’t it still suitable as a fun toy for a kittycat in a shark costume?)
@djslack i dont shop on this site very often what exactly is a Fuko? i really want one of these but i already bought a cheap thermostat and router this month
@cippy The fukobukuro (“unlucky bag”) is a grab bag of junk from the warehouse that they sell a few times a year. Usually a little Meh swag and some oddball stuff. Occasionally there are really cool things.
However, thousands of people try to buy just a couple hundred that are available so they generally sell out in just a couple of seconds, leaving crashed servers and lots of hurt feelings. They’re not for everybody.
If you want a botvac, this would be the time to buy it. You will almost assuredly not get one in a fuko.
@djslack oh okay so it’s not a total guarantee on what you get in the Fuko, still it sounds fairly interesting. I may have to bite the bullet and go for the Neato I’ve been following them for years and this is definitely the best price I’ve ever seen.
thanks for the info Do they sell the Fuko’s on specific days or are they random? it seems like it would be fun to gamble on if nothing else
@cippy No guarantee at all. And they only sell them every few months, and just sold one a week ago so it will be some time now. Search the forum for fuko (click the top right icon) if you want to learn more.
I highly recommend the botvac, especially at this price. It might seem silly until you have one and then you wonder how you lived without it.
@cippy they are completely random though there are some events that traditionally have seen them over the years. Meh’s birthday, for example. I think the next ‘usual suspect’ might be Black Friday? Anyone?
That said you literally need to be here the moment they go live or you won’t get one.
@WTFsunshine I don’t always read the entire writeups. I read more of the comments from other users than what the staff puts on the home page so I didn’t catch the error.
@hutchnow tell her it will make her life easier. My wife loves our new vacuum overlords because they extend the time between manual vacuuming sessions by a lot.
@hutchnow Well, you can’t make vacuuming any easier than just not vacuuming. So go with the cool robot angle instead, I guess. Or wade through the dust bunnies and spell out “VAC ME” in the clean trail swept up by your socks until she agrees.
If you order now, she ought to break before smartpost delivers it, so go ahead and get it on the way.
@hutchnow We have one of the older versions. Absolutely would buy again. We don’t even own an upright.
Ask her what she thinks her time is worth, and how much time it takes to vacuum, and how often you vacuum. My guess is you will “break even” within 6 months easy.
It’s so great when cleaning the house to simply press the “go” button, walk away, and continue with some other task.
@hutchnow Actually, just jumped in myself. Ours was an original bought refurbished in 2014 (changed batteries once). Going to clean up and sell our Neato XV, upgrading to this. XV didn’t have wall brush.
Got one last year from W–t. Refurbished my ass! Dead electronics and a half a dirty Q-tip still inside. I think they just keep sending them out hoping they won’t come back.
I’ve been interested in this… But I have animals, and my cats puke sometimes when they accidentally get out and eat grass. The thought of it smearing cat puke everywhere on the tile grosses me out.
@RiotDemon We don’t schedule cleaning for this reason. An errant doggy door could become a whole house nightmare. But it’s easy to just hit the clean button and send it to work without setting the schedule.
Is this refurbished by Neato, like the ones sold at Amazon? Or is this refurbished by some third party where the refurbishing might by shoddy? From Amazon they are “Tested and certified to work and look like new”. And if that applies to this offering I’m buying. Just need confirmation.
Got one years ago here. It’s scheduled to run M,W,F while we’re at work. Amazing how much cat hair it picks up every time. Had to get new battery after about 2 years. Ordered filters from Amazon pretty cheap. She gets hung up every once in awhile, but well worth it. We named her “Consuela”. Noooooo, noooo… nooooooo
Where were you two months ago meh? I bought one of these last April and it’s really sucked ever since. It’s sucked so good, we wanted another one to share the load, since our house is just big enough that it takes multiple runs, and as the battery wears out, it seems like it cleans all night. So, we ended up buying one (on sale, just not meh sale) at a box store.
If you, or your other half, is on the fence with these, jump, they are awesome, once you get used to them. We have three cats, and ours run every day. It really helps with the cat hair, and it’s amazing how much there is on some days. Keeps our allergies down, and our guests who have allergies are surprised at how little the cats bother them. You do have to pick up before running it. We run one at night for the main house, (cats locked in bedroom with us) and the one in the bedroom in the morning. We have a mixture of tile with throw rugs, and regular carpet, with no issues transitioning between for the robots. (monsters as we call 'em)
They do get stuck on occasion in some of the dumbest places. But that seems to be part of the game. But, even with that, we spend a whole lot less time vacuuming, and our house stays much cleaner overall.
Still thinking about the one today. It’s a great price. But I don’t know what we’d do with another one. Maybe I could modify it and put it in those robot wars things. It could be like the zamboni, and clean up the ring between bouts or something…LOL.
In all seriousness, meh has a lot of junk. This is one of the rare pearls in a sea of full of it.
@beachhead I have four kids and two cats so obviously I have a desperate need for this. OTOH, I always have some random crap on the floor. What happens if we don’t pick up first and it runs into shoes, backpacks, extension cords, cat toys, kid toys, etc?
@spavlis Well, if it’s big enough, it’ll just push it around. We sometimes forget a scratchy box, and it’s moved to some odd place. If it’s too small, or has something that can get wound up in the vacuum, the robot will sense it and stop, and alert you with a “bloop”. You remove it, and it’ll continue vacuuming.
It is a challenge with kids to keep the little stuff off the floor. We run ours at night in the main house so we walk around the house just before going to bed, and clear stuff off the floor. It is a blessing though to daily get any crumbs that may have been dropped through the day.
It’s not perfect, you have to learn it and it’s quirks, but the pay off is worth it to us anyway.
I’m considering this. One the one hand, why am I going to spend $174 on a vacuum when I’ve never even vacuumed my apartment? On the other hand, I’ve never vacuumed my apartment, maybe I should get a robot that does it for me.
Impressive cleaning of both carpet surfaces and bare floors–though not the edges–is among the attractions of this Neato robotic. We also judged its navigational capabilities superb, and the model was easy to clean. But there are caveats. Earlier versions–no longer in stores–exhibited technical problems, with the model displaying a code that its dust bin was not in place, preventing operation. Among other issues, this model ran less time on a charge than most other models tested. And we needed to manually clean cat hair from the brush. (Scored a 68)
Meanwhile - for a bit more ($220) new with a year warranty - the Eufy (anker) RoboVac 11 scored an 81.
A few weeks ago I would have jumped all over this. However I recently “splurged” on the Xiaomi Mi vac, and at $280 shipped, it puts both my aging fleet of Roomba XV21s and $600 Roomba 870 to shame.
This price is amazing, and were I not convinced on replacing my fleet with more Xiaomi or the upcoming Roborocks, I’d be all over it.
I’ll throw my $.02 in here to say I’ve had my neato for years now and still love it, had to get it a new battery after about 2 years though. And when I say I still love it let me elaborate:
We have a dachshund. He is adorable and impressively well house trained. He can hold it all day while we’re at work, and never complains. Unfortunately he is still a living creature and susceptible to getting sick. One fateful day our dog decides he really needs to have evacuate some liquid from his bowels. Being the considerate dog he is he makes sure to do it on the hardwood and not the carpet. Neato however is not so considerate. Seeing as it was a very expensive robot I spent hours cleaning out of its parts.
@woodhouse your post has thrown the validity of this proof into question! How do we know that you didn’t mastermind his demise and then, upon seeing the discussion of his potential demise vis a vis botvacs, instruct the buyers, using his email account, to obtain them and sell them so that you could continue the ruse?!
I’ve had 4 of the XV refurbished and 3 of them lasted a year and a half on the same battery. Finally had one fail at 2 years. The 4th is about to get a new battery and is a bit new. So I’m down to 3. Picking up one of these to take over the primary spot. Hoping they are refurbished as well as before! Had a iRobot and it was horrible compared to Neatos.
@Brasssong Not even going to start watching Star Trek Discovery. As I understand it, the first two episodes will be free and then you will need to pay for a subscription to their “All Pass” or whatever they call it. Nope, not me.

meh…
yeah, meh
It’s my birthday tomorrow, so if anyone wants to get me this, I wouldn’t be mad.

@westownsend Don’t start that Inception thing please…
@haydesigner The Roomba actually vacuums as well. There is an exhaust fan in the dustbin which provides suction to suck up what the sweeper stirs up.
[Long ago, they did have a sweep only model - it may have been the Shop model.]
Make sure to stick googly eyes on it for full effect
Got one in a fuko and it pleases me greatly. Its orderly approach to cleaning the floor seems much more efficient than Roomba’s random bouncing.

Disappointed that it wasn’t a Super Nintendo.
Meh.
@JT954 Yup - when this rolled around on Meh day my first thought was “SNES!”. My second thought was “I’m disappointed”.
@JT954 Anyone wants to buy Sony PlayStation 1?
Naming your robotic vacuum cleaner “Mr. Roboto” would pretty much ensure a robot uprising. Or at least a dust ball coughed up on your floor.
Schedule cleanings for “when” you’re gone…
@hutchnow No one tells me what to schedule my cleanings!
@hutchnow No point in fixing it now, the errors been there 12hrs, another 12 and it’s history.
@hutchnow I came here to see if the grammar cop @cengland0 was going to call out Meh on that part of the write up. But here you are doing it for him.
@WTFsunshine I don’t always read the entire writeups. I read more of the comments from other users than what the staff puts on the home page so I didn’t catch the error.
I’ll wait for this to be put in my Fuko… with only 3 sold as of 12:10 AM EST… there will be Plenteeee left!
@mcemanuel But sold out before the end. Maybe they only had 6.
@ravenblack They sold 267 for $48,251 total.
I saved 4 bucks by buying it during the meh-rathon.
What, no candy corn? For that alone, meh.
@heartny it’s not Saturday.
…and I desperately want one. I’ve been trying to sell it to my better half as a way to compliment our current upright vacuum…so far, she ain’t biting.
@hutchnow tell her it will make her life easier. My wife loves our new vacuum overlords because they extend the time between manual vacuuming sessions by a lot.
What @djslack said, definitely.
@djslack As if she vacuums.
@hutchnow Well, you can’t make vacuuming any easier than just not vacuuming. So go with the cool robot angle instead, I guess. Or wade through the dust bunnies and spell out “VAC ME” in the clean trail swept up by your socks until she agrees.

I would not be sad if one of these showed up in my Fuko.
And it still sucks after refurbing.
That’s the point of a vacuum, eh @mike808?
Got one last year from W–t. Refurbished my ass! Dead electronics and a half a dirty Q-tip still inside. I think they just keep sending them out hoping they won’t come back.
Can I get one that’s only been furbished once?
@awk Sure, but not at Meh tonight.
@djslack doggy doo, stupid autocorrect
@RiotDemon ah, that good ol’ post about roomba feces
Do these suck or do they suck?
Cool, just not in the budget right now. Sucks

@uscpsycho looks like neato.
with meh refurbished crap you can usually just click the warranty link in the specs to see who did the refurb.
both my botvacs are still kicking.
Got one years ago here. It’s scheduled to run M,W,F while we’re at work. Amazing how much cat hair it picks up every time. Had to get new battery after about 2 years. @geochickjo just checked, got her at the other monosyllabic place (bare with me… it was years ago)… still worth it, though.
@geochickjo It’s good to see that at least someone knows what monosyllabic means.
Tron meets Hoover
Where were you two months ago meh? I bought one of these last April and it’s really sucked ever since. @jbartus I’m sure @gnol just moved in last Wednesday.
I’m not seeing the warranty or refurb detail info. Which page is that on?
@mhester up near the top of this page, in the specs section
@thismyusername thanks. Finally discovered that I had to click “show other comments” for that to appear. Thanks
Just got one

TLDR; don’t trust your robots.
Still on the fence. The 90 day warranty is of concern…
Alright, I’ve been thinking about getting a robot vacuum for years and I may finally take the plunge. Anyone know how this is with cat litter?
@dickfarts I don’t know if it’ll help at this late hour, but ours does great with cat litter, and cat hair, and kid droppings.
Y’all wanted proof that @snapster is alive, here you go.
@jbartus
ಠ_ಠ
@woodhouse we’ve found you out, Paul Bunyan! The jig is up!
Anyone else let down by the new Star Trek show on CBS?
@Brasssong Not even going to start watching Star Trek Discovery. As I understand it, the first two episodes will be free and then you will need to pay for a subscription to their “All Pass” or whatever they call it. Nope, not me.
Sold out at 10:51! Yay for Meh!
Has anybody received theirs and had problems with it?
It turns out they refurbished a lot of these for a problem with the dirt bin not being recognized, and unfortunately mine exhibits this behavior.
Got a support inquiry open with neato, and will update when I hear back
@nicktitle Just got mine and having a different problem. It drives forward off the charge base for about 6 inches, then it stops and I get an error that says “Press okay to continue: 3000”. Google says it is a problem with the spinny laser part.
@9haggis
LIDAR
@9haggis I flicked the laser with a q-tip a few times to get it spinning, and it has been working ever since. Maybe just some stiction.
@nicktitle I also had a dust bin problem. The clip that holds the bin closed is broken inside. The bumper switch is also stuck. I’ve reached out to Meh about it and we’ll see what the replacement is like.
Oh, no. It is probably my fault; I may have jinxed the order by buying one. I bought a refurb something-or-other robovac from Woot a few months ago and it didn’t work at all. (It did not appear to have been really refurbished. It was dirty and all of the the fiddly attachments were still connected and some other signs.) I think I am not meant to have a robovac.
My wife ordered one - it arrived yesterday and gives a constant error that the dust bin needs to be closed. Doesn’t look good that we will be keeping it.
We got ours yesterday and charged it overnight. I let it run around for a half hour this morning and it seems to be working well. I went ahead and checked the dirt bin and holy moly there’s a lot of hair already being picked up. I hope it has a long and productive life.
In case anyone else was wondering the fuck that mag strip was for, it’s to set boundaries of no-entry for the neatvac. So far it’s not any louder than the Roomba.
mine is working well.
unfortunately, its laser cannon hump keeps it from going under the bed and dresser.
so it is the “downstairs” vac.
Deebot moves to exclusive upstairs duty.
the Neato is MUCH louder than the Deebot.
Mine has needed to be rebooted a few times- it shows a solid amber light & won’t charge. It also ran out of charge without heading back to its dock
