20August 17 is National Black Cat Appreciation Day
It’s time these beautiful but oft-hated and feared creatures got some good press. Black cats are just as lovable, cuddly, and worthy of being one’s pet as cats of any other color.
Do you like black cats? Do you know anyone who is superstitious about them? Would you own/be owned by one?

My mom had one that lived to be almost 19. She was the blackest cat I ever saw. All black fur, all black whiskers and until she opened her mouth all her skin was black too. The black skin even went up onto her gumline.

black cats
only had one that was solid black. she was half Siamese and yowled loudly.
my grandcat is black and rules my daughter and her husband like the overstuffed house panther that he is.
Does the tuxedo count? If not only the youngest is solid black but she does respond to her name and “treat” most of the time.

Black cats are some of the sweetest cats out there.
Also they are one of the least adopted which is super sad.
@jasneko Yeah the shelter I volunteer at says the same thing. They have so many black cats, some who have been there for years and years or in some cases all of their lives.

Yes it’s really terrible They are such incredibly sweet cats - all the black cats I’ve known are some of the most good natured cats. I’ve made a lot of black cat shirts because of this! Kind of a PSA / good word for black cats.

My beloved Django who died about 6 weeks ago was a “smoke tabby” which meant that he looked solid black, but if you brushed back his fur, it was white underneath! Such a sweet cat.

@Kyeh you have my sympathy!! I too, lost my black cat 7 wks ago. She was feral for 5yrs than lived inside my house for 2.5yrs. Took alot of work & patience! Im so heartbroken. So many superstitions around black cats, thats why they dont get adopted in my area!! Same with black dogs. Its really sad!
@cristysue Oh, I’m so sorry! Wonderful that you were able to finally gain her trust and give her a good life. One thing about this pandemic - the shelter’s around here are adopting out a LOT of animals, so maybe more people will realize how sweet the black kitties and pups can be.
@cristysue I am so sorry. There is something really special about a feral who has decided to trust you. I’ve got one although I snatched her from the parking lot when she was 5 mo so much easier than what you did. She is one of those really grateful cats.

my cat had a lot of his teeth removed as he got older so didn’t look that fierce, but yeah, they’re well-equipped little hunters.

@unksol OMG you are right. I started to play this and within 3 meows I had a cat right on top of me and the rest starring me (computer is in my lap) with perked years.

Black cats are like the goth teens of the pet world
The witch kitty has not been spayed because timing and covid. She appears to have just flipped her switch again. The over agressive cuddling is cute till its not

Which my brain translates to hello. Where the fuck are you. I can’t see you. And I have to call her in to shut her up. Regardless of where I may be sitting. Otherwise she just keeps asking. It does sound like “hello?”
@unksol Yeah 2 of my cats do that on a regular basis and I have to answer to shut them up. When they others do it I know there is an issue of some sort. Funny how I can tell apart each of them making that calling/hello noise.
