Name Suggestions?
13This guy might be making his way north to find a home with us next week. His name is not gonna work for us, though. Got any suggestions?
For reference, we already have an Irish Wolfhound mix named Torben and a tuxedo cat named Ishmael.
I was going to add a picture of the cat, but my phone is being dumb.
Also, I’m going to bed shortly, so if anyone is nice enough to suggest names, I probably won’t respond until the morning.

Based on his chest patch, my vote is for Rorschach. And if that’s a mouthful, you could call him Rory for short.
/giphy rorschach
@thejackalope I like the idea of this, but the girl we lost in July was named Roxy, and a Rory nickname would be too close. I already had someone ask me this past weekend when we were planning to “replace” her.
/giphy douchebag
@PurplePawprints Giphy finally nails it.
@Fuzzalini Right? That came up on the first go. Oh course, said relative was/is a Trumper, so not surprising.
@PurplePawprints You lost Roxy? Aw, damn. May I ask what happened I really loved the pictures of her you posted. (I Boxers.) Now I’m sad.
@PurplePawprints sorry to hear about your loss! Maybe “schach”/shock instead
@thejackalope Thank you. She was a good girl.
@Barney She had an inoperable tumor behind her eye. We found out about it in Feb/Mar. She held her own for quite a while, but then went down hill quite fast. Her last few days were rough.
@PurplePawprints Aw, poor baby. And Torben lost someone he loved…
@Barney He really did adore her. He didn’t mourn as much as I thought he would. He became a lot needier and attached to me, so maybe he just transferred it over to me. He definitely needs a packmate though.
@PurplePawprints Sorry for your loss.
I don’t have a name suggestion to offer, but congrats.
@f00l Thank you! We’re excited and a bit nervous. After Torben I said I’d never get another puppy, but well, like babies, you tend to forget just how bad those first few months are.
Charley. . . When I imagine “Travels with Charley”, that’s the dog I picture.

Clearly that is Seymour.
@thismyusername Seymour Butts?
@SSteve technically Asses.

Finn MacCool… He is going to be huge. And he’s so lovely.
@OldCatLady Oooh, that was a really interesting read. And yeah, we’re hoping he’s going to be a big one. He’ll need to be to keep up with Torben.
@PurplePawprints I like the Finn reference. You might consider using “Fingal” (which is the Scots alternative; both easier to pronounce, and to spell).
He looks like a refined gentleman, perhaps Alfred Pennyworth?
I like the idea of famous composer first or middle names:
Ludwig
Wolfgang
Carl
Sebastian
Etc
@luvche21
WOOFgang - excellent!
Mulder.
The truth is out there & he’s going to sniff it out!
Norton.
Best of luck with him – he’s a cutie!
Thanks for the suggestions so far. If transport doesn’t fall through, he’ll be making his way up from Dublin, GA next Friday and I’ll drive down to Blacksburg to meet the transport. I’m nervous and excited to be adding another wolfie mix to our home. Keep the suggestions coming!
/giphy so excited
@PurplePawprints Oh he’s coming from my neck of the woods! Guessing you probably wouldn’t go for Rebel, doesn’t have to be a Southern thing, it could be Rebel Without a Cause thing. I looked up Torben which means Thor’s Bear, that wasn’t helpful…lol…all I can think of now is Loki…but that’s because he’s just a cutie. Bad, but cute. Last one, since a lot of suggestions have been kind of literary in nature, Sherlock.
@mehbee My dad actually had a German Shepherd named Rebel when I was a kid. I wonder if I could get my husband to go for Loki…
@PurplePawprints I think Loki is cute and Loki is the trickster and he looks like he’s going to give you a wonderful run for your money!
@PurplePawprints Oh and I had a friend that had a German Shepard named Rebel!!!
@mehbee My husband said he isn’t opposed to Loki so it’s in the running.
@PurplePawprints woo hoo!
He is the color of lager and coming from Dublin.
I like the name Lager.
Storm could rename to Harvy
But personality matters,so what is this pup like?
@CaptAmehrican I have no idea yet other than “gets along with everything and isn’t overly destructive.” He’s actually a few weeks older now than the flyer suggests. We won’t decide on a name for sure until we meet him, and it often takes a few days for us to decide, but I’m trying to come up with ideas now, at least.
Is there a Danish connection with you? How about Søren? He looks kind of serious and thoughtful.
@aetris No Danish connection. My husband has Irish roots, and the pup is thought to be an Irish Wolfhond mix. My husband is also into Viking shit right now. Torben’s name is supposed to be derived from “Thor’s Bear” or something like that. He’s mentioned he may want to continue with a similar theme, but I’m not sure that’s going to fit this pup. I do like Soren, though.
@PurplePawprints Torben is a Danish take of Torbjorn, which means Thor Bear. In Scandinavia Thursday is Torsdag, literally Thor’s Day.
Want to stick with a Scandinavian name?
@PurplePawprints - With all that Irish he ought to be a Sean, Finn, or Russell. But if your husband is into VIKINGS, umph. Try “Cúchulainn” on him. Or Cú [husband’s name].
@RiotDemon My husband is saying yeah, Scandinavian, Norse, Danish, etc. He looked up and found all the background info when we got Torben and named him.
@aetris It’s funny you suggest that because my husband’s name is Shawn. He already nixed Finn when I told him about @OldCatLady’s suggestion. I’d have to figure out the pronunciation “Cúchulainn”…
@PurplePawprints - “Coohooley” is close enough, but admittedly hard to yell in emergencies. Beats “Mjölnir” though, imho.
@aetris @RiotDemon My husband suggested Haldor (Thor’s Rock). When I posited that people would think we were saying “Hodor” he responded, “I know, it would be awesome”. So, that’s what I’m dealing with here. haha
@PurplePawprints - It may be time to rename your husband!
@PurplePawprints If you want Scandinavian, try Trygve (pronounced TROOGvuh). It’s a Norwegian name you don’t hear much over here and derives from “trustworthy.”
@SSteve that’s my grandpa’s name.
@RiotDemon Ha det bra, farfar!
@RiotDemon Sunday and Monday named for the sun and moon. Tuesday named for Tyr, the Norse god of war (called Tiw by Anglo Saxons), Wednesday is named for Odin, aka Wodin. Friday is Frig/Freya’s day (Odin’s wife), and Saturday is for Saturn, Roman god of fun and feasting. So many centuries later and for many Saturday is still for fun and feasting.
@moondrake in Norwegian Saturday is lørdag, it means washing day. Not quite as exciting.
Sort of looks like a Rupert, to me.
Looks like a Barney to me.

I have no idea for a name except for maybe Bart. Or Monty. But congrats! I’m so jeally! Still can’t talk my husband into a dog…
@moonhat Thanks! Keep working on him. You’ll wear him down eventually.

Lots of fun stuff to browse on those sites. I like Sindre personally.
@RiotDemon Sindri is one that my husband suggested this morning. I think y’all might be looking at the same sites. I’ll pass these suggestions along, too. Thanks!

Also fur kinda looks like Jedi robes.
Call him jedi.
Or Robles.
Handsome little guy. Congrats!
I’ve always wanted to name a dog Dammit. Others wouldn’t let me.
Gordo Groinsniffer
Walter or Howard
Floyd or Fflewddur Fflam.
Tex or Floopity Doo
@cranky1950 I thought Howard was something you named a duck.
@rtjhnstn Well it’s a good duck name too. Larry is a good name for that dog too.
@cranky1950 Larry the Lobster.
Also try Harold, especially if you have purple crayons.
Puck
Congratulations on the upcoming adoption. That Torben pic is soooooo cute.
@mfladd Thanks! I’m glad you like that pic. My phone was being a punk and only showing the one I’d taken most recently, so I was glad it was a halfway decent one, at least.
How about Aengus, for the Celtic god of love? A love god with a bit of trickster thrown in. That’s what I planned to name my next Wolfhound, but I got a Zephyr instead. Zephyr’s 40% Irish Wolfhound which is where he gets his size, but his form is more like the Scottish Deerhound, Borzoi Hound and Greyhound that each contibuted 20% of his makeup. Turns out Aengus would still have been a good name, he’s incredibly loving.
@moondrake Gorgeous!
@moondrake I’ll mention it to my husband, but we live in WV and most people will think we named him after Beef.
/giphy seriously?
Your dogs are gorgeous!
Siggy, short for Sigmund (as in Freud). Something about that first pic and that distinguished beard. Just need glasses and a cigar. (Disclaimer: I am not encouraging or condoning giving your dog a cigar).
Meh: a dog enthusiasts’ site with a fixation on selling odd items.
Name him Dublin
/giphy dub step
You all are awesome. I really need to come around here more often. I forgot how much I love you all.
Giphy keeps failing me!
/giphy Love you all
I don’t know why, but I like George. Whatever you name him he is an adorable ball of fur. Enjoy him! He is so cute
@tinamarie1974
@moondrake that is one of my favorite episodes
Cuchulainn, the Hound of Culann. honors the Irish in the Wolfhound and also the scrappy boxer pedigree.
If you go with Sindre or Sindri, here’s a badass spark sprayer for you.

Useless! Steve McQueen’s dog in wanted dead or alive.
Veronica Mars’ dog was named Backup. They got a lot of mileage out of it. Going out to face some bad guys? Don’t worry, I’m bringing Backup. What are you doing standing in the yard in the middle of the night? Calling for Backup.
