@blaineg That’s weird then. Unless they have designed this for areas that have variable water pressure and you want to know if you have enough to have a decent shower? I lived somewhere with a well. When it was running low/dry water pressure would drop substantially and tar would spit out of the shower. We could have used something that measured water pressure there so we could opt not to take a shower if the pressure was at the spit the tar into your hair level.
@blaineg@chienfou@Kidsandliz One our showers has the “temp-only” control, and we didn;t really want to rip the wall apart to put in something more practical, so we installed one of those manual valves on the shower head stem so we weren’t always running full throttle.
I’m surprised the IOT people have not come up with temp/flow control devices so you can monitor your temp and output with your waterproof smartphone in the shower …
@blaineg@chienfou@Kidsandliz@stolicat
They have. They’re busy closing their third round of VC financing after a successful launch of the app-controlled bluetooth toothbrush. Once they get the blockchain integrated, it will be the next slanket.
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@stolicat My home shower control is a much plainer temp compensating single handle temperature-only valve. American Standard, I think. Unlike a previous brand, the compensation really works.
I thought I’d miss the volume knob, but I never have.

I’m weird, I’m a high tech Luddite. I earn my living with computers and electronics, in the area of industrial automation. I enjoy gadgets. But there’s a lot of trendy things I will never have, because I know way too much about how they work. And how they break.
No smart door locks. No smart doorbell. No smart sprinklers (yet). I did compromise on smart security cameras, so I could get something running quickly before our Africa trip a couple of years ago. But I found out beforehand that Wyze cameras can be hacked for local control.
My main objection is “the cloud”. There is no cloud, it’s just somebody else’s computer. Can you trust them? Trust every one of their employees and/or suppliers? What happens when they go broke or get bought up? Or just get bored? Even if they’re not malicious, do they have even the faintest clue about IT security?
Nissan lost some of their source code to network intruders recently because the username and password on the server was admin admin.
Sometime I will migrate the cameras from Wyze to iSpy or something similar, and everything will be on my computers.
One day (maybe) I will automate the sprinklers, but it will be OpenSprinkler or SIP, not the IOT darling of the week.
I have ordered a Wyze video doorbell, but again, I have the option of running it myself.
Ring has turned evil since Amazon bought them. Behind the scenes they are using law enforcement for marketing and promotion, with a promise of unfettered access to a citywide network of citizen provided spycams. That is a proven effective dodge of approval, oversight & budget controls.
No problem you say? I don’t have a Ring doorbell you say? Guess where your neighbor across the street’s Ring camera is pointed?
Yes, I know, most people can’t do this. But be aware of the problems, and ask awkward questions when someone wants your money and trust.
@blaineg Oh there is no way I’d want to cut off the shower if the building ran out of hot water in the middle of the shower (hot water heater here can’t handle the demand at certain times of the day - which having learned that I try to avoid those times for a shower). Would rather rinse off shampoo in cold water than have to pour it over my head from a container that I fill up in the sink.
@stolicat nope, I had to look the site up but I’ve seen it installed in a house being remodeled. Six or eight different zones plus steam, controlled by a touch panel and I believe also by app. The control modules and mechanics/valves (including the steam heater) took up most of a 4’x4’ section inside the wall behind the shower.
Right now the speedometer shower valve is seeming inevitable. We need to tear out the old tub/shower setup and replace it with a walk-in shower anyways, so it will be a great opportunity.
Besides, starting the day with a smile caused by a silly shower knob can’t be a bad thing.
Delta made a similar one called Temp2O but it seems to be discontinued as it’s not in stock anywhere but maybe on ebay. Also water powered and color changing to match the water temperature.
That is actually kinda awesome, I would want one in my shower!
PANS! GLANDS! CRAYONS! AWESOME!
Had? But not any longer?
@Kyeh Just a visit, note the stylish gown in the reflection?
@blaineg Not quite seeing it - something blue with short sleeves…? Not a hospital gown, is it?
@Kyeh Yep, and I think we’re all glad I was wearing it.
@blaineg Hah! I’ll take your word for that, but I’m glad you’re no longer IN the hospital, evidently!
@Kyeh Thanks! I’m home free, a couple of day detour. I’m playing stupid blood games again. This time my body hates red blood cells.
I’m on steroids again, so you’ve been warned!
@blaineg Yikes, I hope it all goes well!
I want one, and I found it! But do I want it $450 worth?

Don’t let the Home Depot match for a hundred bucks fool you, that’s only the handle, not the valve.
@blaineg no need to change your valve.
https://www.deltafaucet.com/design-innovation/innovations/shower/temp2o-technology
@RiotDemon That just doesn’t do it for me. It looks like a watch, not a spedo.
@blaineg @RiotDemon Ooh, I like that shower head!
@blaineg

@ruouttaurmind Oooh, nice find. Thanks! Much better price.
@blaineg Back the bus up… I just realized that says “shower valve not included”. Non starter. Sry!
@ruouttaurmind No problem. The fine print taketh away. I appreciate the help.
Nice, I’ve only seen those in Europe and I love them. I can achievement perfect temp showers daily!!
It needs a matching tachometer to measure your GPM!
@stolicat And a GPS to tell you whose shower you are in. If you’re in Texas and paying for hot water, you don’t want to be in yours…
@stolicat Excellent idea! I’ll have to tweak my motorcycle gang for not thinking of it. They missed that completely.
@mike808 @stolicat If you need a GPS for that, you may have other problems.
I don’t need one of those. Still no water and the water system locally is at 54 psi so we’d be off the charts on the left hand side.
So you can adjust the pressure of the water independent of the head setting used? Or?
@Kidsandliz I only used it once, but it seemed to be only temp control, no pressure.

Looks like temp, not pressure to me… YMMV

@chienfou @Kidsandliz @mike808 @stolicat As long as their exit strategy is solid, and their buzzwords are compliant.
@chienfou @Kidsandliz Yes, it is temp, 70-130 F and 21-54 C.
Or MPH/KPH if you prefer.
@chienfou @Kidsandliz @stolicat My home shower control is a much plainer temp compensating single handle temperature-only valve. American Standard, I think. Unlike a previous brand, the compensation really works.
I thought I’d miss the volume knob, but I never have.
@chienfou @Kidsandliz @stolicat I have seen setups with a separate valve for flow.
@Kidsandliz They are termed pressure regulators, so maybe that would solve your problem as well? Maybe worth a look.
The Symmons specifically says it cuts all flow if there a failure on the hot or cold line.
@chienfou @Kidsandliz @stolicat

@Kidsandliz I think they’re aiming more at the possibility of a cold failure, and the burn potential.
@blaineg @chienfou @Kidsandliz But the MPH and KPH numbers don’t match up. Must be a cheap foreign knock-off!
@blaineg @chienfou @Kidsandliz @stolicat
I’ve seen this beast before:
https://www.us.kohler.com/us/KOHLER-Digital-Showering-Overview/article/CNT130400004.htm
@blaineg @chienfou @djslack @Kidsandliz please tell me that’s a spoof site …

@chienfou @djslack @Kidsandliz @stolicat Voice activated, and wired for sound.
“This track is really hot!”
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
I remember seeing one of these in a hotel once, I loved it! It was fun pretending the temperature control was a throttle
@PooltoyWolf You mean so you could pretend to burn rubber on a fast take off as you jumped out of a boiling shower?
@Kidsandliz Fortunately never burned myself LOL!
At first, I was a bit cold to this product, but then I warmed up to it.

@blaineg Maybe I need to start searching for the tachometer?
@blaineg don’t forget the check engine light.
@blaineg @stolicat Add a police siren in case things get out of control in there, especially if there is, um, double parking occupancy going on.
Cool, parts are available.

@blaineg this one doesn’t have the retro style appeal but it is neat that the LED display is powered by the water flow: https://www.lowes.com/pd/PULSE-PULSE-LED-Tru-Temp-1-2-in-Rough-in-Valve-Pressure-Balance-Chrome-Trim-Kit/5000245395
