@Headly Yeah, but it's not as pop as pop can be, still pretty rockin'. The overall 'symphony' of Fragile is what I like the most about that one. And I love that they have The Snake in 5/4 too.
@dashcloud You need to post these things separately so that we can appropriately express our appreciation for each as such. I have to admit, even though it is so 80s, Axel's theme still gets to me. And so does the movie.
@Moose Can't decide whether I love that or am appalled by it. Yes, pretty sure it's both. Awesome. Thanks. :-) And now I've added it on Spotify, though it's not quite the same without the vid.
This is one of those threads I could go on and on and on in. Music is a passion of mine. Especially local music. I'm lucky enough to live in a town with a thriving music scene and I'm constantly in awe of the talent around me. Here's one local act that I think will be busting out regionally very soon - Come Back Alice
This is another of my favorite local acts that I think will be breaking out with certainly some regional success. The Applebutter Express. They even played Bonnaroo last year. Woo Woo!
Last local one I'll do for now. If you like Southern Rock, Blues, Funk, or just amazing talent check this out. The band is called The Corbitt Brothers Band and this song is the showcase piece for their harmonica player, Isaac Corbitt. Even if I wasn't lucky enough to call him a good friend I'd still say he's easily one of the best harmonica players alive today and certainly within the rock genre he is. He played with John Popper of Blues Traveler last weekend and after the song Popper got on the mic and said "HOLY SHIT. This guy is incredible!". Yeah, that happened. Anyways, this is his big piece just called "Isaac's Jam". I challenge anyone to watch this and not have the same reaction as the random guy behind me when I shot this who you can hear at the 1 minute mark going "Holy fucking shit"
This is the official tour video from 2012. I like it because I made the cut - I'm in the front row in the dark shirt with the white writing @ 2:36 - 2:38. 2 whole seconds of screen time! and I got these handed to me:
@kc5rbq In addition to technical proficiency, Neil Pert has the depth of intellect and soul to write lyrics that make you think. You have to read at least one of his books if you're into his music. Bike travel, pedal-powered when he was younger, and petrol-powered as he has aged.
I've posted this video before in the forum, but it remains one of--and perhaps the--best and most unique (and most appealing/disturbing, IMO) music videos I've seen and heard. Ever. We went to Chappie partly in hopes that they would work this song in somehow (at least that was a big part of my motivation). The movie mostly has a Die Antwoord soundtrack, but, alas, not this.
Seriously, I love this song and I often repeat the catchphrase to my wife.
@joelmw I fink u freaky and I like you a lot too . . . Loved this ever since it was a staff pick on Vimeo. If you like this you may like Polly Scattergood, Eva & the Heartmaker, the Glitch Mob, and Thugli.
I'm white as the driven snow but I damn well love that video.
@Pavlov Okay, damn, I love the sound of the THUGLI video, but I find it way too disturbing. I almost wish I'd just heard the music and not seen the cocky cops and kids with guns. It feels like I'm celebrating exactly what's fucked up if I get into it. That's not to say that I can't come to appreciate it, but it's messing with my head.
@Pavlov Glitch Mob: Yes! I had already added some of their stuff on Spotify. This is one of the genres that I work to (unless it's a song I know super well or the words are really subliminal, lyrics are too distracting for me). Awesome video too. And thanks for turning me on to this track; it's in my queue now.
@joelmw I totally understand Thugli messing with your head. The fact that the video is so powerful is probably why I enjoy the song so much. I enjoy being provoked by art. The Eva & the Heartmaker I chose mostly for the video (but I dig the tune). Glitch Mob fucking rocks even for an old fart like myself, Polly's stuff is pretty out there (listen to Cocoon sometime) - that particular video (Wanderlust) I use as an example to teach my film students how to properly execute. It is that well done - I had one student just complete a dissertation on the subliminal progressive storytelling. Textbook how to do it right. Great short film / music video.
Funny, all this coming from me, who thought for a long time that there wasn't any good music made after 1979.
@Pavlov Hard to argue with that. It's an exceptional video. There's some great work being done in the short form. So where do you teach? And is film your core discipline?
@joelmw I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in Cinematic Arts, Film & Television Production from Savannah College (Atlanta) and a Ph.D. in Film & Digital Media from UC Santa Cruz. I co-own a media production company currently specializing in fashion and popular culture and I occasionally guest a semester every couple of years instructing in the digital film-making program at KCAI for fun and to keep a leg up on the competition. I have been specializing in high speed photography and digital video for the last several years, as the genre is challenging and highly lucrative. Our firm specializes in equity / rev share projects . . . We front the production and make ours on the gross. Best business model I have ever pursued.
If you would ever like to share your favorite music, come join us on Plug.dj! We have a group that originated in Woot's Music Monday turntable.fm (RIP) room, and now have a non-corporately associated room over on plug called Sub-Optimal Music.
I lost many decibels of hearing to Concussion Ensemble in the '90s and have few regrets. Up front there are three nearly full drum kits -- each missing one different piece; in the middle there's two guitarists (one is Rich Gilbert from the Zulus and Human Sexual Response) and the bass, and in back Larry Dersch played a rack with a fire extinguisher, a street sign, a parking meter, some industrial equipment, that sort of thing. If the sidebar happens to show their CD, clicking to see the cover will give you a better picture of what's going on there.
I really despise the lighting on this, and I wish this conveyed the sense of all of your internal organs being rearranged by the physical energy of the band's sound. But 20 years later, it's all we've got.
Israeli Psytrance with Spanish overlays. This song is a kind of anthem for me, but I have a great appreciation for the Goa generally.
I like the whole track (and prefer the longer version to both the radio cut and the music video--as opposed to this "video" which is really just audio), but it starts to get really good at 3:21 when the strings come back; lyrics break in at 3:35 (English 4:01).
My first wife had died, I was lonely, depressed, angry and confused and shooting some hoops at the gym at something like 2:00 in the morning when I first heard this song, in an interview with Hayes Carll on Fresh Air. Believing as I did--and still do, just somewhat differently now--in Jesus, it made a helluva lot of sense to me. And it made me laugh. It was only later that I found the video, which is even better.
If you guys remember the "Woot Music Mondays on Turntable". A few of us still hang out, and you're welcome to join us! Turntable died, then we went to some other site, which has since died. We're now onto:
@Bogie 1. Having never connected that deeply at Woot, this adds another layer of complexity to my existence. Ugh. 2. I find it troubling that the option to skip is "meh"--a word which now means to me, at worst, "this is mediocre but tolerable"--and has definite overtones of "secretly subversively awesome." 3. Damnit, I signed up anyway and am now listening to Sufjan Stevens. meh. But I probably won't hang there long.
@Pavlov Ahhhhh, thanks. I caught Jimmy Webb at a small venue here a couple of weeks ago and, despite his inability to hit a note, it was a really remarkable show.
I'm a sucker for strings . . . and apparently for "stringz" too. I stumbled across these guys on Spotify and never realized until just now that they'd been on one of those "Talent" shows. Anyway, I like this kind of thing and would be grateful if anyone knows of similar artists.
Not sure why there isn't a better video (at least higher res), but the audio is still aight.
Due to the product of the day being the "Ooma," I haven't been able to get the song Uma by Panama Wedding out of my head. So you all get to hear it, too:
Branching out in two different ways to help broaden the thread:
Jazz: Oddjob - The Big Hit
The Big Hit
Electro House: Rawrberry - Movie Stars
Rawr
Prefab Sprout - Billy
One of my new favorites: Snarky Puppy, Thing of Gold. Jazz/fusion/rock/electronic music. Fun stuff:
Something random:
DMX Krew
Something new - a drum cover of Daft Punk Contact:
Something old:
Something really old:
@Headly I like the way Valentina Lisitsa plays Rachmaninoff or something even older
@Headly Fragile, one of my favorites, but not as good as 90125 :)
@luvche21 I like 90125, but where Fragile is hard core progressive, 90125 is basically pop.
@The_Baron The man playing his own. Yeah. Too bad they didn't have 192/24 digital recording in 1929...
@Headly Something not quite so old but weird ”>
@cranky1950 If you like bass:
@Headly Yeah, but it's not as pop as pop can be, still pretty rockin'. The overall 'symphony' of Fragile is what I like the most about that one. And I love that they have The Snake in 5/4 too.
The Who: Boris the Spider (I love a song that tells a story from start to finish).
Red Wanting Blue - Audition
I am going to see them this weekends and I am excited.
I love purple.
@Willijs3 I like that a lot
@Barney
@Barney I LIKE, Barney! :)
@The_Baron I like that, too!
@kc5rbq Aww. (purple blush)
Here's some random tracks:
Maybe appropriate for today's item?
A very underrated Weird Al song:
An artist I love:
Rest of the album can be listened to/purchased here:

@dashcloud Nice! Check out Jean Michel Jarre too! :)
@dashcloud You need to post these things separately so that we can appropriately express our appreciation for each as such. I have to admit, even though it is so 80s, Axel's theme still gets to me. And so does the movie.
@Moose OMG...I could not stop watching and listening. :)

@Headly VEERRY COOL! Neil Pert is the MAN! :)

Here's a cool remix of the Whitney Houston song mentioned in the write up today...
Something neat - Tricot (Japanese alt-rock band)
For a completely direction here's:
Just found out about this band this morning, a couple of teenagers from Austin, TX:
@JonT Most excellent.
@JonT That's pretty good
@JonT Very good.
A little Count Basie (if a cover) for your pleasure, along with a tribute to Gene Gene the Dancing Machine, who passed away yesterday.
@editorkid American Idol, The Voice et al. got nothin' on The Gong Show.
@joelmw Absolutely true. Barris may be my favorite culturally subversive hero.
@editorkid Gene Gene the Dancing Machine is gone?! This is terrible news.
@mossygreen I'm sorry this is how you found out, but yeah, just Monday, apparently. (A Facebook friend thought it was yesterday.) http://www.jazzfestforum.com/forum/main-category/jazz-fest-forum/773672-gene-gene-the-dancing-machine-passed-away-march-9th

@Pavlov To be clear, I think it's a powerful video. The song is just too first person and the message too unpleasant.
@Pavlov The Eva bothers me less but I don't like the song as much. Cool video though.
@Pavlov Glitch Mob: Yes! I had already added some of their stuff on Spotify. This is one of the genres that I work to (unless it's a song I know super well or the words are really subliminal, lyrics are too distracting for me). Awesome video too. @Pavlov Go Slugs!
@SIMBM
@joelmw
Mostly for the video . . .
@Pavlov Nice. And more my wife's kind of music. I'll have to share.
@joelmw Here's another one for your better half . . .
Some Deep House
Some Future Retro (or Chillwave or whatever)
Was looking up this song earlier in the week because I was watching the Celebrity Bowling marathon and the theme song reminded me of it.

As for an off-beat song to suggest? How about Babymetal?
@bruceoite "Poppy" but you might like it . . .
@Pavlov You're full of good suggestions, old man (I joined AARP last year myself).
I am gonna leave this here
If that dad song didn't fulfill your needs
@Squid_07 I've not thought about them in years....
I'm glad that this thread didn't die right away.
Florence + The Machine - What Kind of Man
(song starts at 1:20ish)
@Willijs3 I'm a little embarrassed that I love a song that's so popular, but maybe that should give me hope for humanity instead?
Guy Forsyth, "Hometown Boy." I love the tension of this song.
And hey, who doesn't love waking up to some accordion?
Becoming Insane
- Infected Mushroom
Israeli Psytrance with Spanish overlays. This song is a kind of anthem for me, but I have a great appreciation for the Goa generally.

@Pavlov I love me some Major Lazer. Nice video too.
A buddy of mine turned me on to this tonight while we drinking in the edit bay with a client - I'm really digging it.
"Maybe you could do a deal, with your old buddy Satan - and sell that soul, it's no damn good, so why the hell 'ya waiting?".
No official video I can find . . . Might offend some listeners. Probably only those that need offending.
@Pavlov You've inspired me. See Hayes below.
My first wife had died, I was lonely, depressed, angry and confused and shooting some hoops at the gym at something like 2:00 in the morning when I first heard this song, in an interview with Hayes Carll on Fresh Air. Way easier to share all your cool youtube music videos, then trying to load them in this thread.
@Bogie I don't want to belong to any club that would accept people like me as a member.
@Bogie 1. Having never connected that deeply at Woot, this adds another layer of complexity to my existence. Ugh.
2. I find it troubling that the option to skip is "meh"--a word which now means to me, at worst, "this is mediocre but tolerable"--and has definite overtones of "secretly subversively awesome."
3. Damnit, I signed up anyway and am now listening to Sufjan Stevens. meh. But I probably won't hang there long.
Anyway, thanks for sharing. :-)
@Bogie 4. But I'm definitely going to continue to hang out awkwardly here--however uneasy it might appear. ;-p
This is fucking brilliant in certain parts and I'm quite envious. Wonderfully done.
@Pavlov I thought that voice was familiar and sure enough....
@thismyusername I've promised my wife that when she gathers the requisite number red balloons, I'm going to dance to this song JD-style.
Here's a little something old:
Jimmy Soul - If You Wanna Be Happy
And a little something new:
AWOLNATION – Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)
@editorkid - the video sucks - but enjoy the tune.
@Pavlov Ahhhhh, thanks. I caught Jimmy Webb at a small venue here a couple of weeks ago and, despite his inability to hit a note, it was a really remarkable show.
@editorkid I'd have enjoyed that show. Amazing songwriter.
I'm a sucker for strings . . . and apparently for "stringz" too. I stumbled across these guys on Spotify and never realized until just now that they'd been on one of those "Talent" shows. Anyway, I like this kind of thing and would be grateful if anyone knows of similar artists.

Some more music for contemplating giving meh more money for headphones....
Due to the product of the day being the "Ooma," I haven't been able to get the song Uma by Panama Wedding out of my head. So you all get to hear it, too:
