My well water nukes any kind of pump coffee maker unless I perform regular descaling. So I use a manual pour-over setup. When I have time, I get out my La Pavoni lever action espresso maker (no pump) or my single shot hand-powered Staresso. Sorry, Meh! [I do have a very obscure late 70's Mr. Coffee Non-Electric.]
@radi0j0hn I hope you descale your La Pav regularly as well! I just replaced all the group gaskets in mine as it was acting up, but I'm not convinced that the problem wasn't actually a chunk of scale blocking one of the (tiny!) group inlets.
@brhfl So far, so good I've used vinegar and descaler on it. I found it used and my technique with it is not up to par. But it is nicer than several pump units I've had. I also found a commercial burr grinder/doser, but it is not quite fine enough for the Pav. Either the burr needs replacing or it is not adjusted. But it sure makes consistent pour-over drip grind!
It's so pretty. But I like my 20oz french press..... but it looks fancy. But I really don't drink more than two travel mugs (1& a top off) a day..... but it takes about the same time to make. But but buttttt ugh restraint!
@thismyusername perhaps. Solid Indistrial Design is not an accident. Really cool when a company figures that out. ("mistake" referred to "how did it find its way here?")
@RedOak Sounds like what was said of Japan in the 50's. Take a look at the Staresso single cup espresso device that was a kickstarter and designed in China. They ain't just copying anymore. If you want to see some goofy, but original stuff go to wish dot com..kind of an Amazon for Chinese entrepreneurs.
@radi0j0hn Japan to this day is not a hotbed of design innovation. Excellent detail skills with copying and making things better/higher quality, but design? Not really. Most visible design deficiency example: automotive styling.
And of course there are exceptions to to every cultural rule.
Why are we still drinking our caffine fixes? In this 21st century we should have already invented a system to instantly inject caffine into our bloodstreams! If I were to invent it myself I would name it Very Instant Coffee. (I'm also still waiting on my flying car. )
Joule heating, also known as ohmic heating and resistive heating, is the process by which the passage of an electric current through a conductor releases heat. The amount of heat released is proportional to the square of the current such that
H \propto I^2 \cdot R \cdot t
This relationship is known as Joule's first law or Joule–Lenz law. Joule heating is independent of the direction of current, unlike heating due to the Peltier effect.
This is literally the coffee maker I already use in my kitchen that I bought from Target for about twice this. Even for refurbished, I'll happily buy this just to put it, box and all, in the closet for if mine ever breaks. I love it.
@peaceonearth I have one of these and it's great. I make the coffee at 7am and it's still nice and warm at 12. And it doesn't taste burnt from being continually heated by a hot plate.
12 cup minimum. Why do they even make a 10 cup? It's either one of those onecupatatime or 12 cups, there is no in between. Unless of course you want in between. But then I can actually make 10 cups in a 12 cup machine, right?
Wait, there is actually another problem. Those stainless steel thermal carafes are a bear to keep clean. They get downright nasty over time. I replaced one with a stand alone glass lined thermal carafe & never looked back. Easy to clean & better at keeping hot things hot. Make coffee, pour into carafe, easy as pie!
I received this coffee maker from my girlfriend for Chistmas. In fact it's brewing now. I love it. Makes good coffee, it's got the stainless carafe, and looks very good sitting on your kitchen countertop.
This is a great mo-sheen! We got one for the motorhome since it only used electricity for 7 minutes, then stays hot on it's own. So, only have to run the generator for 7 minutes. But the coffee is actually "hot" versus "warm" from the typical ones, so, we also bought one for the house. And I'm buying one of these for a spare. (Wife is gonna have a fit, but some things are important!) We spent between $75 and $95-ish for each of ours, so this is actually a deal!
If you read the reviews, there is some complaints about the "filter", which is just a disk that sits on the top of the coffee basket..we don't use that anyway, so not an issue for us. We've only had the pot overflow once in the past few years we've had this. It's not hard to rinse out the pot when you have your last cup, so you don't do this. So, if this is a concern, well, look in the mirror for both the problem, AND the solution!
One annoying feature is the "clean alarm". Every 90 pots or so (3 months or so for us..1 pot/day), the clean light comes on, and you have to remember the procedure to clean it. Which usually requires finding the owners manual online somewhere. But, small annoyance.
OK...that's way more time about a coffee pot than anyone should invest...either writing or reading. Just buy the thing..it's the monthly "good buy" here amidst all of the extremely "meh" stuff. Just the teaser to keep the VMP going...;)
@beachhead well crap. I was gonna pass until I saw your feedback. We have off-the-grid vacation property that would benefit similarly. Now it's sold out! ... back to the French press + Bubba.
Oh well, probably healthier on the bank acct and closet space to leave VMP turned off. (This has by far been the longest stretch that we've left VMP off.)
Got my machine earlier today, and it's cleaning now.
Specs said "Includes Gold Tone permanent filter to eliminate paper filter cost/waste". Can't find this in the box and wasn't installed. Anyone else get a filter or not?
@Sergej Also did not get the filter. Wondering if somewhere along the line someone mistook it including the water filter disc for a coffee filter. Fortunately, it does take standard paper filters, which I already had lying around.
@Sergej@supdawg444 - Looks like they took the specs from Mr. Coffee's website. If you're missing the gold tone filter, please contact Jarden (who holds the warranty) to see if they can send you the missing part from your box.
@Thumperchick Just called Jarden, they agreed to ship me a replacement filter after some discussion.
They had me unplug the coffee machine to read off the letters printed on the plug, then declared the machine to be out of warranty. Then had me email my receipt to customer_service@jardencs.com to confirm it was recently purchased.
I'll wait and see if a filter eventually shows up. I'll just go buy another filter until it does.
@Sergej Thank you for posting your experience, so that anyone else effected by the missing filter issue can know what to expect. You rock! Maybe, if you're buying a temp filter in the mean time, you can use the new from from Jarden for tea? Or as a back-up?

Mr. Coffee??
More like Mr. Meh.
@UncleEdZed
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. (Woo woo woo.)
Probably shouldn't have Meh'd it. I mean it does have a gold tone filter.
@rvcastillo23
Gold tone? Is that like Corinthian leather?
@MehnofLaMehncha more like Nauga hide and pleather. Or ask your wife about "French Polishing".
Hot deal? Watery deal?
This is a nice looking coffee maker. Although I want it, I have a coffee maker from a previous meh sale still in the box.
This deal should ground out sometime tonight
@AttyVette No beans about that!
Refurb remeh
I like the idea of a removable reservoir.
I prefer a coffee maker that I can be with on a first name basis.
I shaved my balls for this?
@alacrity You shaved them for Lady Lordess, remember? The electrodes?
@awk nuh-uh. the electrodes were for Hanukkah, and Lady Lordess is as anti-Semitic as they get. That and shitty taste in shoes.
What does the fox say...
"glork klaf glork klaf glork klafaf af coffee."

FINALLY. A meh coffee maker that at least claims to heat the water to 195-205 F. Worth the $28 to see if it's true.
Meh, I am waiting for a cold brew maker. Hot drip coffee is so mid 80s.
@jmendenhall Here you go. Home Depot has these in orange.
@jmendenhall Hot drip coffee is so 1,000 years of use. Pre-hipster.
It's so pretty. But I like my 20oz french press..... but it looks fancy. But I really don't drink more than two travel mugs (1& a top off) a day..... but it takes about the same time to make. But but buttttt ugh restraint!
Was it a mistake? This device is stylish.
@RedOak it really is a good looking thing, perhaps mr. coffee is learning some style in his old age?
@thismyusername perhaps. Solid Indistrial Design is not an accident. Really cool when a company figures that out. ("mistake" referred to "how did it find its way here?")
@RedOak Credit some guy in China for the design. This is just an acquired name put on a product from a wholesale trade show. Zombie brand.
@radi0j0hn it might be a basket-o-brands company but there is no way that design originated in China.
There's a reason China rips off others' designs or hires it out. Originality is not a strong trait in Chinese culture.
@RedOak Sounds like what was said of Japan in the 50's. Take a look at the Staresso single cup espresso device that was a kickstarter and designed in China. They ain't just copying anymore. BVMC-PSTX91 = Brand very meh-centric. People should try it 91 times.
(Mr Coughy is great!)

(I'm also still waiting on my flying car.
@Kerig3 I went to Trader Joes today and got a big ol; bag of Coffee Rios... does that count as a new form of caffeine fix?
@Kerig3 if I simply wanted a quick, cheap fix of caffeine, I'd pick up 2-liter bottles of Mountain Dew by the pallet.
Mud Coffee
Don't fuck with my coffee. How does it heat up the water?
Thermal carafe is great -- does this come with a bull shit reusable mesh filter - or does it use a legit paper filter? Fuck trees
@Kevin that's no way to make babies.
@Kevin "How does it heat up the water?"
Joule heating, also known as ohmic heating and resistive heating, is the process by which the passage of an electric current through a conductor releases heat. The amount of heat released is proportional to the square of the current such that
H \propto I^2 \cdot R \cdot t

@Kevin @RedOak

@radi0j0hn what kind of heating element is the best to heat water for brewing coffee?
if this were 12-14 cups I would have bought it.
Who only drinks 10 cups?
@RogerWilco especially since my Bunn-o-matic can make 12 cups in 3 minutes. I would expire in 7 minutes without caffeine.
This is literally the coffee maker I already use in my kitchen that I bought from Target for about twice this. Even for refurbished, I'll happily buy this just to put it, box and all, in the closet for if mine ever breaks. I love it.
@Fatestorm how's the coffee? I'm a little concerned about how well a thermal setup works, and if the coffee will stay drinkable for long.
@peaceonearth I have one of these and it's great. I make the coffee at 7am and it's still nice and warm at 12. And it doesn't taste burnt from being continually heated by a hot plate.
@eksaint so energy efficiency.
We've been turning off the hot plate and pouring our freshly hot coffee into our wonderful 24 oz. Bubbas.
I've been looking to upgrade my caffeine machine, but I need a 12-cup! I drink too much coffee
@cpierce Buy two; now you have 20 cups!
12 cup minimum. Why do they even make a 10 cup? It's either one of those onecupatatime or 12 cups, there is no in between. Unless of course you want in between. But then I can actually make 10 cups in a 12 cup machine, right?
@Joedetroit Mr. Coffee does make a 12 cupper..but it's about $100 more than this one. Buying two would be cheaper.
@beachhead OMG Genius! Lotsa Coffee!
