@salaosantiago “Your brewer should maintain a water temperature between 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal extraction. Colder water will result in flat, under-extracted coffee, while water that is too hot will also cause a loss of quality in the taste of the coffee.” Source: The National Coffee Association - http://www.ncausa.org/About-Coffee/How-to-Brew-Coffee
@narfcake no, @salaosantiago has a point. It won’t be boiling water at that temp, unless you are at altitude in the Rockies or some similar place. It will have boiled water at some point in the process in order to make it pump to the top of the pot (think percolator), but that’s another story.
@chienfou Exactly, I was, I guess vaguely, referencing @kus ’ recommendation to use this for “boiling” water and the difference in boiling points between atmospheric pressures. I don’t doubt that this machine can produce adequate, even preferred, temps for brewing coffee.
I bought one of these last time Meh sold them. I liked it so much, I bought another one Amazon for my office. Great coffeemaker. It brews quickly, keeps the coffee hot for a long time, and the timer bar underneath the clock shows how long the coffee has been brewed. Great buy.
/giphy maybe useful to boil water for formula for an infant?
Water Filtration Disk Replacement
Your water filtration disk will need to be replaced once a month (approx. 30 brew cycles). If the machine will not be in use for an extended period of time, rinse the water filter with running water and clean the coffeemaker before use.
This is a very decent coffee maker. Fast, keeps coffee hot. The only problem I have with it, is, it leaks a little bit when brewing… Must be the refurb aspect. a half paper towel on plate, and we are golden. I would buy another but I dont need another.
Ok, so the whole broken inside thing is literary creativity right? I mean, this is meh after all. The glass vacuum tube in the carafe isn’t literally going to be broken inside when it arrives… is it?
@mehdaf The dead hooker is garnish- much like salt on the rim- but if kept cold enough, she makes a good cozy, and minimum 30% alcohol by volume. Or below 40 degrees. Preferably both, simultaneously and copiously.
(bonus points awarded for the LMOE margarita pool)
@jaburg Sorry. Years ago my wife had a running joke with some other teachers about “pickled penguins” that was actually referring to puffins. She was crushed when she learned they weren’t really penguins at all (wrong hemisphere) and I am always surprised at how many folks (obviously not including you ) get them confabulated.
@callow It’s just a beep alert for “hey, hope you drank it all”. I have one of these, wanted another for the RV, and refused to pay $54 for a refurb at Ollie’s. Patience is rewarded, my order is placed.
My only problem is that with the thermal carafe, I don’t have the visual reminder that I need to wash it, and I let scary things grow in it and the filter basket once. Now I just use this every day instead of the mini 4 cup, so no more forgetting.
I got one of these in my fukufuker bags. It has a hoop-ajooped clock, so the programming feature doesn’t work, but it’s an oddly competent coffee machine. It makes coffee. Doesn’t taste like decomposing plastic or galvanized buckets.
I have the slightly nicer (but pricier) model on my Amazon wishlist, but the only difference I can see is more stainless steel where the black plastic in the middle is on the meh model.
@HemlockTea From the manufacturer: “Although the BVMC-PSTX91 and the BVMC-PSTX95 coffee makers are the same in functionality, they do differ slightly. The BVMC-PSTX91 coffee maker has a black and stainless steel face, whereas the BVMC-PSTX95 coffee maker has an all stainless steel face.”
@clarion47 That was my first thought. Not so hot on refurbished products that touch my food. Might have belonged to someone who let scary things grow in it.
@moondrake First thing out of the box I took them and cleaned them. But mine have been pristine so far. I have one more to open up and check. I’ll keep some powdered Sanka for you when you come by. Cootie free!
I am retired, this means my morning pot of coffee can be enjoyed slowly. The 2 hour timer on my current pot feels like more pressure than I need so am looking forward to this product. Yes, folks morning coffee need not be a timed test but a leisurely pleasure.
Bestbuy had it as a flash sale for $19.99 new…didn’t buy it because of the filtration system. Filter only last one month. Too costly to have to buy filters.
@just4sc Did you know you don’t have to use the filtration filters? You can just brew the coffee like always without using the disc. $19.99 new would have been a screamingly great deal for this unit!
@accelerator you don’t know Yankee/Scot/frugal/cheap.
$15 supply inline filter in basement under fridge supplies all our filtered water (not just coffee water) for 6-12 months depending on how much we push it.
It’s funny that most of these being sold are from Washington state, where Starbucks started. What are the two prongs on the thing for?
Mr. Meh, I love this unit, iykwimaityd! But too pricey for me. It figures I just temporarily paused my vmp yesterday, as I’d probably give it a second look. I’ve been having a lot of trouble buying decent coffee lately, so I’ve been grinding my own beans. I haven’t gone the next step of roasting my own beans yet–(although I did buy a west end kettle krazy popcorn popper;a lot of people have been using that to roast beans. )
And what this cold-brew coffee I’ve been hearing about? I thought you had to have the perfect temp hot water to brew a decent cup of Joe?
@wew Starbucks sucks. Imports drink it. Most of the rest of us know what real coffee is supposed to taste like.
Having said that, I just bought a pour-over which takes forever to brew awesome coffee, and is more of a commitment that I can make at 5:45 in the morning. Saving it for the weekend. I’m in the market for a new automatic - just not this one .
@wew Cold brew coffee is delicious. It’s less acidic and perfect for iced coffee. I’ve never tried heating it up, so I don’t know what the hot coffee experience with it is. I never liked making iced coffee (from hot-brewed) at home because it never tasted like a coffee shop iced coffee, but when I tried with cold-brewed, it was magic.
@wew I’m reply to everyone. I got a Starbucks gift card for Christmas, and the closest Starbucks to me is 50 miles away. I was looking forever at the Goodwill, and passed on a brand new old glass vacuum system—what an idiot I was! They are nice. So, it’s really hard finding a coffee maker that not all used up at the Goodwill-I finally found a beauty, and put it back on the shelve to pick up later since there was no one in the store–A girl came over and was looking at it and I chimed in with “Yeah, that’s a nice one, they don’t come up too often here”…talking the thing up, and she bought it before I even knew I talked her into my coffee maker. So I gave up and spent like $8 at big lots to a 4 cup coffee maker and it’s lousy.
O.K. and What I Really Want To Say Is: the Civit cat coffee that’s supposed to be the best coffee in the world. Kopi Luwak is the name of the coffee. The cat eats the coffee beans, the beans go in one side of the cat and come out the other, and they gather these beans up and sell them. There’s an aromatic brew! It’s also the most expensive coffee in the world. http://imgur.com/a/4KguG upboat if you want meh to get in Kopi Luwak beans.

@SaintO Mine has(ve) a small plastic tablet-shaped floater down at the bottom. I imagine it’s some sort of magnet doohickey to tell the machine that the reservoir is empty.
That’s exactly the item I’m talking about, but I’d be rather surprised if that was indeed a float level sensor. I suppose it’s possible, but it’s nothing like any of the float level sensors I’ve ever seen (and I’m a product manager for a reed switch company, aka the tech that pretty much every float level sensor uses).
Any chance it’s a water quality indicator of some kind?
@SaintO
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Could be, I dunno. I would think that it (water quality sensor) would be listed as a feature for marketing if it had one…
What is surprising to me is the heft of the carafe. When I first picked it up it seemed too heavy, like water or coffee had gotten inside. The carafe weighs over 1 2/3 pounds! But I opened up a second one and it weighs the same. Right now I’m doing a heat retention test. After first brewing a full pot of water it is close or right at 200 degrees F. I’ve got 30 minutes to go to measure how hot the water is after two hours. Science!
@SaintO It is. I’m glad at least one other person thinks so. We’re at 180° F after two hours. It’s not exactly a “real life” test but I think it is an approximate measure of the heat retention for the carafe.
@SaintO Last test result: 160° F after four hours in a full carafe. Not too bad. If you really like data, the ambient room temperature was about 76° F according to my electronic kitchen scale. It didn’t feel that warm in the kitchen to me, but I had the ceiling fan on. The temperature is supposed to go down into the 50’s tonight so I wasn’t running the air conditioner. Now I need to find some good coffee that isn’t over-roasted like Charbucks does.
upon taking the coffee maker out of the back a large amount of black particles and dirt fell on the counter and floor. The unit has smudges and generally looks quite dirty. This unit has not been refurbished according to any standard I am comfortable with. I’m concerned about cleanliness and safety issues so this dog is a return. Wife picked up our littlest girl (4 years old), told her, thought she was a couple of pounds heavier than yesterday.
“You know what that means?” she said, and was about to say that it meant she was about to have a growth spurt, sprout up a couple of inches.
Before she could answer her own question, No 2 said, “That I’m big enough to drink coffee now?”
@kus “Brewing temperature: 195°F - 205°F” - maybe at your elevation you can boil water at these temps; I’m <100 feet above sea level.
@salaosantiago Brewing temperature, not boiling temperature.

$28 seems a little expensive for a refurb when a brand new one is $55 on Amazon. Meh usually has better pricing than this.
@cengland0 A refurb might be less likely to spill water all over the floor. Check the one-star reviews.
@craigthom why? What makes you think 3rd party “refurb” means more than rinsing out and plugging in to see if it lights up?
This will keep the margarita guy calmed for today right?
@ELUNO
I wonder what Mr. Coffee’s first name is? Joe?
@awk It used to be.

Hard well water here kills pump makers in short order. We use a #6 filter cone and manually brew from a pour-over kettle.

Ok, so the whole broken inside thing is literary creativity right? I mean, this is meh after all. The glass vacuum tube in the carafe isn’t literally going to be broken inside when it arrives… is it?
@mehdaf According to Amazon questions/answers section it’s steel, not glass vacuum
@HemlockTea that is a lucid and helpful response, a rarity here, thanks!
BTW this is the one I was thinking of.
Was going to buy, but immediately got scared from picture number 5. #rhymetime
@tmwest87 Looks to me like it’s a package/packaging testing device. If it passes this, then maybe even the Post Office will keep it whole.
this will not make margaritas.
@alacrity but the carafe will keep them icy cold…
@mehdaf so will a properly chilled dead hooker.
@alacrity ok, two things, if you kill the hooker, who will make the margaritas?
Also, what percent alcohol would the margarita need to be to maintain an antiseptic property?
@mehdaf Points for upside-down margarita pool party. Ah, the things ones does on Freshman Rush Night. Best. Threesome. Ever.
@mehdaf The dead hooker is garnish- much like salt on the rim- but if kept cold enough, she makes a good cozy, and minimum 30% alcohol by volume. Or below 40 degrees. Preferably both, simultaneously and copiously.

@alacrity USDA certification for dead hooker requires at least 48% alcohol by weight so we’re in the clear
/giphy USDA certified organic meat
@kus ah- I wondered why I could never get the USDA certification on the dead hookers, no matter how cold they were- I wasn’t using enough tequila!
I wonder if it’s fast.
I need my fix within 4 or 5 minutes of waking up.
@daveinwarsh Set the timer to brew 10 minutes before you wake up Dave. lol
@daveinwarsh I said that to my ex, too.
@therealjrn I don’t think about coffee in the evening and… I like the smell of the coffee grinder in the morning!
@daveinwarsh Well, then you need to set Mrs. daveinwarsh’s alarm 10 minutes earlier. lol. Good Luck.
Jarden sounds so French, but the spelling is different from jardin, which means garden. But I digress…
@robson Or that country and the river in the middle east, if you’re from Boston.
rousing-acidic-puffin
Sure, sounds like a South Seas varietal breakfast coffee.
@jaburg funny you should say that… Puffins live in the northern hemisphere…
@chienfou Exactly why they are so rare! (Unfortunately, coffee doesn’t grow up there so obviously I was stretching things for the joke)
@jaburg Sorry. Years ago my wife had a running joke with some other teachers about “pickled penguins” that was actually referring to puffins.
