@krock1 I laughed my keester off the whole way through. Jack Nicholson was absolutely brilliant! I didn’t even recognize him as the casino owner until the 2nd time I saw the movie. This was probably one of his best acting feats.
“The Lone Ranger” (2013)
Critics made up their mind to hate this one before it even came out. A lot of people say “I don’t listen to reviews” but the press was so negative for this one, long before production was even half-way finished, it was DOA.
I’m not saying it was a great film, but it was an enjoyable two hours of fun. Certainly more enjoyable than, say, the better received “Thor: The Dark World” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, which came out in the same year.
Moves I like that got terrible reviews: Super Mario Bros. (23%) One of my all-time favorites. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (40%) Sorority Boys (12%) Hilarious. It’s a great “tv movie” in that you can come in at any point and find something to laugh at. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (31%): For the first ten minutes or so I was worried they had just made some big, dumb movie trying to be Lord of the Rings. The rest of the movie made up for it, and I don’t know know why it was so rated so poorly.
Moves I dislike that got positive reviews: Avatar (82%) I think it used to be higher on the tomato-meter. I wonder if it has been pulled down by later reviews. The only good thing about this movie is the pretty CGI. Crash (74%) won Best Picture at the Academy Awards that year. It’s embarrassing, made-for-tv garbage, but I think most people have realized that by now. I think it used to be higher on the tomato-meter. I wonder if it has been pulled down by later reviews. MAS*H (86%) This is a case where I don’t think it was a bad movie, unlike the previous two, but it was a bad movie for me.
@Limewater I disagree about avatar. It was different. I watched it when it first came out in theaters. It was more about the special affects and it being the very first true 3d IMAX movie that was made through and through with 3d not adding 3d aspects after production. It was revolutionary. Movie was.y bad at all, but not as great as made out to be. It was because it was a 5 star director with the quality of film and revolutionary tech
@zach_kay392 Sure, it looked pretty. There is nothing pretty I can just stare at for two and a half hours without getting bored if nothing interesting happens.
As a tech demo it was really good. Try watching it in 2-D. It was dull and stupid in all the wrong ways. I have a very high tolerance for stupid movie if they’re actually fun. If a crappy movie is fun to watch, I’ll like it. Troll 2 is amazing. Avatar isn’t.
My wife and I both sat in the theater bored, neither wanting to say anything to the other because we each thought the other must be enjoying it. Nope.
When the original Star Wars movie came out, I was a kid visiting my brother in Dallas and I went to see it at the North Star Mall. I walked out shaking my head, “Man what are people talking about…that’s a really bad movie”. When it was re-released for the 20 year anniversary, I reluctantly agreed to go see it with my hubby (who is a big Star Wars fan). I walked out shaking my head, “WOW 20 years later and it’s still a bad movie”. He didn’t want to talk to me for the rest of the night.
@allergycheryl When I saw it I was just a kid. I hadn’t really heard anything about it so it hadn’t been “over sold” so my expectations were not so high. I was absolutely blown away from the opening scene with the Star Destroyer coming into the picture from behind your view. It was a feat for the day. I never even noticed the special effects flaws - I was in awe like many others who saw it without preconceived notions. However, the re-release with the added crap like Jabba The Hut I almost walked out on. That was extremely lame. I kinda made my mind up then that if that’s what Disney was going to do with the movies then I didn’t care to see any of the prequels. I still haven’t. Empire is still the best of the franchise.
@allergycheryl I slept through that movie at the theater. Yes even with Dolby surround sound. Fell asleep on it 20 years later when I tried to give it another chance. Blasphemy I know. But I’m a Star Trek fan.
@katbyter good to know I’m not the only one that just doesn’t get the whole thing (but I’m not wild about Star Trek either - Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is my idea of sci-fi)
@njfan I was very surprised that this had such a low score. I first watched it as a teenager in the mid 2000s with my now wife. I loved it.
I will say that I thought it was older than '93. It makes sense though, it was based on an older established action movie motif.
Battleship and John Carter. Speed Racer. Popcorn movies that could’ve been blockbusters but had terrible marketing. Taylor Kitsch seems drawn to those.
@simplersimon Speed Racer was great. I feel like the biggest problem it had was it came out at the same time as Iron Man. (The second biggest problem was that people were expecting The Matrix: Car Edition, not Live Action Speed Racer Cartoon.)
@simplersimon “John Carter” seemed like it should have been a hit. And I’m not basing that on my tastes, but it just seems like the type of sci-fi fantasy that should have done well. I agree with you re: the marketing. I think people who were not familiar with the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels were totally oblivious to what it was about. Not only was it just a guy’s name, a rather bland ordinary name at that.
Conversely, I think name recognition hurt “Battleship”. Just the notion of being based on the board game seemed silly and people did not give it a chance.
@DrWorm Literally adding “of Mars” to John Carter, like they did for the ending title card, would have been a huge help. And watching Battleship, it feels like they had a script and decided it’d do better if they added a few references to get the funding from Hasbro. It’s amazing but you go in expecting b-movie because if the board game connection.
@Chaeotica Honestly, the fact Wachowskis were able to pull so far from The Matrix and still be good put them back on my radar after the unspeakable third movie. Though I will say the second would have less hate if not for the crap conclusion in the third.
@simplersimon I’m with you on Speed Racer. It’s the only other Wachowski movie I’ve seen that I thought was good.
I couldn’t stay awake through Battleship.
@mml666 Yes, it’s a great comedy, a decent heist film, quality action, and some bonkers cinematography. Throw in grade A scenery chewing, Bruce Willis singing (better than you’d expect), and a bit of spy parody. Somehow the whole mash blends perfectly. Anyone who hasn’t seen it, definitely do.
@entwashian I LOVE the backstory/premise/world from Jupiter Ascending but the plot falls apart for me by halfway through. It could have been so much better. Someone needs to write a book about that world to redeem it.
I’ve been waiting for a thread like this: Spy Who Dumped Me was given pretty poor reviews. I think it’s fucking hilarious. Personally I’d love to see it pitched as something like a Netflix original series where each episode is like a fun, self-contained little adventure.
What about movies that you can’t stop watching? If Now You See Me (good score) and Now You See Me 2 (terrible score) come on, I’m watching both.
Also, as a Navy brat, I used to watch Down Periscope at least once a year. I don’t know why I love that movie, but I do.
Ishtar is a giggle. Mars Attacks, amusing. Depp’s Tonto character in The Lone Ranger captures me every time. Sometimes people are just too influenced by critical reviews and decide to hate something, then miss the simple amusements.
How about a highly rated film that is actually poxy?
What movies do you like that have bad reviews?
What movies do you dislike that have good reviews?
Thinking the rule should be <40% on Rotten Tomatoes.

@ilovecincinnati Tron Legacy was beautiful. I’m angry there wasn’t a follow up.
The cartoon was great too. Also abandoned.
Meanwhile, they are building a Tron rollercoaster at Disney Orlando and they already have one in Shanghai.
I’M NOT BITTER.
Longtime Ishtar fan here.
@mossygreen Ishtar-ible
@mossygreen oh God so bad
@mossygreen I came here to say just that. I have no idea why Ishtar gets all the hates. I always thought it was amusing.
Any of the new Star Wars
@ELUNO Which end of the spectrum are you on?
@tweezak On the super brilliant one
@ELUNO
Ep7: “Worst. Star Wars. Ever. No way the next one can suck as bad.”
Ep8: “I stand corrected.”
Perfect Stranger is the perfect thriller. All thrillers are about betrayal. Perfect Stranger examines that theme from multiple levels and angles.
I second Ishtar.
I like the romantic comedy genre. They almost always get bad reviews and I like almost all of them.
Don’t be meticulous, cousin @Pamela - Perfect Strangers was a fantastic show.
Mars Attacks
@tweezak: Great movie. A lot of people didn’t get this one. It’s a beautifully done, slightly camp, dark comedy.
@krock1 I laughed my keester off the whole way through. Jack Nicholson was absolutely brilliant! I didn’t even recognize him as the casino owner until the 2nd time I saw the movie. This was probably one of his best acting feats.
@krock1
There. Fixed it. And I totally agree on all points. Now.
We liked The Great Wall, and it got pretty bad reviews.

@ELUNO @PocketBrain I very much want to un-see this.
@MegaHenzoid @PocketBrain Don’t watch Howard the Duck then!
Dr Doolittle with Robert Downey Jr. Has a 14% from critics but my nephews and I loved it!

@Limewater oops…or was it?

@xtrunksiex I agree. I still enjoy watching the movie, though!
@entwashian Yes, this movie is 100% fun.
Super Troopers - 35%
@hems79 I watched it after loving Beerfest and was greatly disappointed.
@ELUNO @hems79 I had the exact opposite experience (and order of events).
Man on Fire - 39%
This movie was FANTASTIC.
@hems79 I can’t believe that got sub 40% from critics! Audience 89%. Apparently critics thought it too violent.
