Yo - does anyone know if this MUST be used with Google Assistant or Alexa in order to get the real-time video and other notifications of people leaving flaming bags of poo on my porch?
Good review averages, but only 3K ratings on App Store, less than 1k on Google Play. (Compare with competitors like Blink, around 50k ratings on both platforms, Arlo, 150k for Android, 200k for iOS, etc.)
Ok techies, I’m the last to jump on the surveillance boat. Hate the subscription thing, prefer opening the door with a bat… Would this be the in between?
@Aj432@ladyhawke001 Let it be said that my client whose stated profession is chiropterologist was improperly and hastily labeled a threat by their neighbors for wanting to share their love of these beautiful creatures.
@ladyhawke001 Ostensibly no subscription required for this device, but you’re still dependent on the manufacturer keeping the app updated and the servers online to support it. I see one reference to ‘Expand Your Experience…Optional Cloud Storage with more benefits to experience peace of mind’, but the manufacturer’s website only seems to have info on two types of subscription: One that lets you keep videos from 1, 2, or up to 5 cameras for 7 or 30 days in the cloud, and another that’s basically Life Alert, but I guess now you can make your own “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” videos.
The cloud storage options kinda make me suspicious, since it seems all their cameras have SD card slots. Hard to tell whether that means the SD card is optional if you pay for the cloud storage, or you have to pay for the cloud storage to view events remotely, or something in between. It’s probably safe to assume that you can at least live-view the video feed from the thing for free.
How you open the door is going to be entirely up to you, this thing can’t help you regardless; It’s just a doorbell, not a lock, and the manufacturer doesn’t appear to have a separate smart lock available.
@Kyeh lol, I was never one for slobber (and the Staffy has dignity and restraint, and limits his loving to being a mobile weighted blanket).
My tacklesploot baby? Ok, yes, I can see the hesitation. She’s pretty horrible, and she loves me horribly. Bruisingly, scratchingly, drowningly horribly.
The SD card slot is interesting… so when someone comes up and steals the device off your house, they’re the only ones with the footage of them stealing the device off your house…
@Perfect_Timing exactly! It’s it me, or is there nothing actually or literally securing this to the house? It just sits in a plastic wall mount that was designed for a soap dispenser? What the actual…? Doorbell!
What a terrible design, seemingly requiring visitors to recognize a weird abstract pale logo on a white rectangle which is itself on a white rectangle as the doorbell button.
I assume there even is a button, maybe it’s some sort of talkie toaster situation and as you approach the doorbell yells at you and demands you scream “Alexa” if you want it to notify the homeowners, or something.
Oy. We are actually still using a knocker, as our 33-year-old doorbell crapped out about 20 years ago. We’ll upgrade when they invent a virtual doorbell that informs you telepathically when someone is thinking of coming to your door.
today’s fresh Wordle (via the New York Times app at just $6 a month)
For the record, Wordle is free, though most of the news is paywalled. (Which is weird because they endanger so much of their value in that meta-fact of them being a “paper of record”, as part of an important and widely distributed “common knowledge” that almost everyone sees. But hey, free game for clicks instead.)

I don’t want no stoopid bell! I WANT KNOCKERS!!!
/giphy knockers

@yakkoTDI Ok giphy, I guess I will settle for boobies.
@yakkoTDI I think that would be called your knuckles.
@Kidsandliz @yakkoTDI Fun fact! The Irish invented door knockers to save knuckles for more important uses!
(This is an Irish American joke, please actual Irish people who don’t punch things do not call it out.)
@brainmist @Kidsandliz @yakkoTDI Americans That Think They’re Irish
@brainmist It was to preserve the supply of knuckle sandwiches
Yo - does anyone know if this MUST be used with Google Assistant or Alexa in order to get the real-time video and other notifications of people leaving flaming bags of poo on my porch?
Serious question despite the detour
@melonscoop Optional, primary interaction will be via the Mobi Smart app;
Google Play
App Store

@Aspirant_Fool thanks, yo.

@ladyhawke001 id have to say yes, since it seems both extremes you prop may land you with charges either to your bank or to your name.

@ladyhawke001 tbh I’d recommend a Eufy system if you don’t want a subscription. A little more well-known than whatever MOBI is
With a video doorbell, this could have been avoided:
@phendrick And we’re all glad they didn’t have one at that time.
I still have fuku box sensors to set up, and meanwhile I hardly ever even lock my front door. Or the other doors.
Weirdly, no one ever tries to invade what is very obviously the murder house on the block. Is it the bones?
It’s probably the bones.
@brainmist Aren’t there some vicious dogs as well?
@Kyeh They are more viscous. As in slobbery. And free with the kisses.
In fact, one has perfected the tackle-sploot, which enables her to pin her victims down for a thorough love-fest/ waterboarding.
@brainmist
That would deter me!
@Kyeh

I feel reasonably certain we’d be adding you to my exuberant baby’s slobbery converts?
@brainmist

I’m one of those finicky cat people, you know?
@Kyeh lol, I was never one for slobber (and the Staffy has dignity and restraint, and limits his loving to being a mobile weighted blanket).
My tacklesploot baby? Ok, yes, I can see the hesitation. She’s pretty horrible, and she loves me horribly. Bruisingly, scratchingly, drowningly horribly.

And I love her too.
The SD card slot is interesting… so when someone comes up and steals the device off your house, they’re the only ones with the footage of them stealing the device off your house…
@Perfect_Timing This is why I suggest WyzeCam in your window. Cheap, easier to set up, and leaves an annoying wire running up to your window sill.
Btw, kudos to the copywriter for…
@Perfect_Timing exactly! It’s it me, or is there nothing actually or literally securing this to the house? It just sits in a plastic wall mount that was designed for a soap dispenser? What the actual…? Doorbell!
Why are there no photos of people actually using the device. Everything is a (poorly) photoshopped image.
@Chronicle Yep. Someone definitely doesn’t know how to use the Free Transform tool well at all. The logo is all kinds of wonky.
Why is the doorbell on the other side FACING the door?
Not sure if this link attempt will work, but look at the images meh provided…

This seems like it could be a replacement for an indoor WYZE camera.
Looking forward to try this.
