This is perfect for my kiddo who just bought a house and will have a bar set up in his basement. I love it when Meh has gift ideas I wouldn’t have thought of on my own, lol!
I also got a set for myself (because I need another thing taking up space that will probably never get used), and a third set as an emergency gift for someone I will invariably forget to buy for.
@k4evryng My problem is that I forget that I got the thing to give to the person I forgot to get a thing for, This is why I have, for example, 4-5 BT remote BBQ thermometers and a bunch of other meh and woot items boxed up in my basement.
@baqui63 Funny you should mention that because I was going to say above that buying ‘extra’ like this is the reason my house looks like a satellite Meh warehouse location, or an episode of Hoarders.
I buy, then I forget (or lose) the thing, then it reappears when I don’t need it after the holidays are over. Then I forget about it again, and buy more. Rinse and repeat. So fun.
(I have 5 of those ear thermometers and a few of the pulse ox monitors Meh had for $5 a while ago, so don’t feel bad about those BBQ thermometers…I totally get it. )
@baqui63@k4evryng I have a “gift shelf” where i put the gifts - if it’s for a specific person, i label it, if it’s a generic “hostess” gift, i write what it is. the stuff i lose / forget about is the stuff for me that i put in that “special” place…
@baqui63@k4evryng Is there a brand of bluetooth remote thermometers you suggest? I keep meaning to add one to my grill supplies. Oh, I see now that you mentioned they were from here or woot, making my point moot (most likely). I will ask anyway, in case you do have a suggestion (or if the ones you bought were “serviceable enough” and I might be able to still find them).
@Doooood@k4evryng The ones from ThermoWorks are most excellent… spendy but very good. I have yet to use any of the ones from meh and woot, so I cannot comment on them
I buy, then I forget (or lose) the thing, then it reappears when I don’t need it
You are not alone. I have multiples of several kinds of tool because the first (sometimes +n) one had been mislaid and could not be found when it was needed. So I acquired another, used it, and when I went to put it away, the original (sometimes plus prior replacements) had rematerialized in exactly the location where they belonged. I’ve also ended up buying stuff while on the road, because I discovered that I’d failed to load that item when prepping for the trip. I have about a dozen folding four-foot-long tables because of that, among many other things.
I cannot blame this syndrome for the excess of cats, however. (Do you need a pair of very nice, well-socialized tabbies?)
I have had to rebuy tools and other stuff way more often than I care to admit. Thus the ‘my house looks like an episode of Hoarders’ comment…because it’s true.
@k4evryng@werehatrack
I find that generally if I buy extra tools it’s so I can spread them in the most common-use areas. That saves me from having to look around where they should be, not where I left them last!
As someone who recently got really into mixology YouTube I have OPINIONS.
Probably enough stuff here to justify the price. The hawthorn strainer should work fine, the large jigger is useful. Muddler is fine. Wine opener is a nice backup tool to have.
Prepare for the (arguably) most important pieces to be decorative. This style of shaker is notoriously hard to open when cold and messy. Get a decent ~$20( https://www.amazon.com/Barfly-M37009-Shaker-Cocktail-Stainless/dp/B074HMNQPQ/ ) boston style shaker set and you’re set. The spoon is going to be too short and poorly weighted to use how it’s intended to stir but could work fine for your morning metamucil.
@highonpez is right on the shaker. I have one and it is difficult to open after shaking iced drinks. However, I just dry off the shaker and my hands well and seem to be able to open fairly easily with a bit of elbow grease. It is not difficult enough to get another but I am also only using it for one drink, if I needed to use it for several quickly, I would probably toss it and get a different type.
@highonpez Do yourself a favor and get a set of Koriko-brand weighted shaking tins. There’s a reason that almost every respectable cocktail bar uses them—they’re inexpensive ($15), the fit is impeccable, and they last forever. I’ve had mine for a decade and they’re still just as good as new.
Lol, I have that set and they’re incredible, yeah(thanks How To Drink youtube channel). But sadly that price is only half a set and the shipping is not included with Amazon so it’s gonna set the people back around $35. Barfly is respectable and affordable.@coreyward
@coreyward@highonpez A friend of mine said she first saw the word “barfly” in writing when she was young and assumed it was pronounced “barf-ly” - after all, people who drink too much often do barf a lot!
For those who may be wondering, the National Day of Mourning is a New England ceremonial remembrance of the European invasion and conquest of the Americas, with the main observance at Plymouth in Massachusetts on the fourth Thursday in November.
I think I find greater historical value in that than in the ex-post-facto “Thanksgiving Day” formally established in 1863 and carefully crafted to obscure the disaster for the Native Americans that the arrival of European settlers actually represented.
Tomorrow’s offering should be the Meh shot glasses to round out the alcohol theme. Shots will take care of those that want to skip the fancy cocktails and go straight to drunk.
There is nothing worth buying in this set. Cheap bar tools are just not worth it.
You really want a boston-style shaker set with two tins; Koriko is the best, and still very affordable
Cheap hawthorne strainers work, but a nice one will work much better and clean easier for a couple bucks more; the Cocktail Kingdom Koriko strainer is my fav, again
You don’t need a muddler for most of what you’re doing with cocktails, and you can get by with any ol blunt instrument you choose
Nobody is using ice tongs anymore outside of obsequious hotel bars
The OXO angled mini measuring cups are much easier to use than jiggers, and typically more accurate too
Again, a nicer bar key and corkscrew are going to be a lot more pleasant to use for a couple dollars more
So if you really just want to be a cheapskate this works, but for about $65 you can have a set of tools you can enjoy using for life.
@coreyward I had a slightly better set, and got so much use out of it that I handed it off to someone else - and I don’t miss it. I improvise tools when I need them now, and that’s maybe three times a year.
I ordered two of these kits and couldn’t be happier! It is a perfect kit for “cater-waiter” bartenders who have no idea what the client calls a “bar setup.” One kit will be a terrific holiday present for a friend who just moved into a new apartment, and the other one is backup for me …!

Can it make a pizza?
@yakkoTDI It can make a pizza soggy with a few added ingredients.
Cute clicky face today
I needed one of these strainers over the weekend but couldn’t be bothered to drive to the liquor store across the street. $8 is worth it for me

@nikodrant
Way to put that VMP to use!
Okay, if these things are even slightly better than “just utter crap”, this is a stainless steal at this price.
Number of Pieces: 12
Mixology & Craft 14-Piece Bartender Kit
Hmmm?
Are the recipes the last 2 pieces?
@Euniceandrich I can count 13 pieces without the recipe cards. Either way, that 12 has to be an error.
@Euniceandrich oops
@Euniceandrich @troy Maybe the list is wrong. The first photo shows a pair of
fruitcocktail picks at the lower left, and I would swear that they weren’t on the component list. With the recipe cards, there’s 14. [editing happened]@troy Oh, and the S is missing from Specs up there.
@troy @werehatrack I’m guessing they had to sample the kit first and maybe got too wasted to spell check their listing.
@jwoody27 Practice makes prefect.
@troy @werehatrack
[Got here late]
No way it said “pecs”?
Coulda used some of those…
Decent pour, wouldn’t recommend as butt plug alternative unless you live in Tennessee.

@NoIRK The previous giphy was better.
Can I use this kit to mix more than just alcohol? Like, can I become a fruit juice only mixologist?
@AaronLeeJohnson Of course. That’s what you start with in bartending class to make sure you get the hang of it.

I’m willing to bet we’re not alone, either…
@baqui63 @k4evryng Sometimes it is easier to buy another than trying to find the right box.
