Meh subscription $65 a year
2I only realized just now I was getting charged $65 a year for the meh subscription, which I allowed them to sign me up for when I bought something for the first time. I somehow thought the $5 stated was for the year, but it’s actually monthly plus taxes.
Fell for it, I guess.

I don’t know how it could be much clearer than this:
Or just read the terms? None of it was hidden and the full benefits are linked to the info page, which starts off as:
With that said, if you didn’t use any shipping benefits in the last month, feel free to contact support for a refund for the month. Beyond that, it’s on you.
@narfcake There must be an echo around here.
I’m a bit confused, here. “Wooters” joined up in July of this year. Even five months (it’s been slightly over four) plus tax is just twenty bucks (or so). Not a current member (i.e. not currently paying the 4.99 and change), so I don’t even get the 65 bucks complaint (unless the yearly accumulation is being pointed out).
/giphy shoo fly
@Shrdlu Perhaps wooters complaint should now be listed under “spam”.
@Shrdlu I had the same reaction. As a member, wouldn’t it translate to $59.88 per year?
Or $60/year for those lucky/dumb enough to still be charged the extra 12 cents.
@Barney @Shrdlu We don’t need any of those dirty Wooters around here. They smell like Bezos.
@therealjrn Be nice, some of my best friends are Wooters.
@zachdecker Yes, but it comes to more than this for those mehmbers who are charged tax.
@Barney I should write my congressman and complain! This should not be taxed!
It’s not as though we receive anything of value!
@therealjrn greasy, octopus-eating fingers.
@medz Those are the WORST.
@zachdecker Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who are not taxed. Have you checked?
Edit: I agree with your second statement.
You should review and balance your financials every month.
Yes and why isn’t there a little heart of whatever next to her screen name, isn’t there always something, or no?

@moonhat @tinamarie1974 @chienfou
No icon because they’ve already called and cancelled their mehmbership (not VMP - I pay an extra penny each month for that, plus Missouri sales tax, despite VMP not being a tangible good actually subject to sales tax. Because lazy programmers/accountants.)
Although, technically, shouldnt they get the poop icon?
@chienfou @mike808 @moonhat yup! They should have a steaming pile next to their name lol
@chienfou @mike808 @moonhat @tinamarie1974
Who the fuck gave them the phone number? Was it you, Mike?
@chienfou @moonhat @therealjrn @tinamarie1974
Y U mad, bro? Because you don’t have the digits?
@chienfou @mike808 @moonhat @tinamarie1974
Naw…I aint mad bro…I got the number…maybe you should tell me what number you think it is so we can make sure you have the right one.
@mike808 @tinamarie1974 isn’t poop for ex-VMP only, not ex-Member?
Lol seems like a lot of a shills. So what are the gushing members buying with your benefits that make it worth paying your monthly membership fee? You’re all buying at least one of the proferred items every month, so I’m curious to see the “long and distinguished” list. Meh.
@wooters they aren’t shills. Click on their names to go to their profiles and see that a lot of them have been here for many years. You can also see how many items they’ve bought.
@wooters - I don’t buy something EVERY month, and there are a LOT of meh or worse offerings, but on the whole I’m a little ahead. Running it back to last October there was the FACES OF MEH SHIRT, followed by the MEH CHRISTMAS SWEATER SHIRT the following month, together with the 3-PACK: IGLOO YEW STUFF 14OZ LIGHT-UP BOTTLE. I get a LOT of use out of all those things.
I got an I LIKE IRK SHIRT in December, as well as the QFX FOLDABLE OVER-EAR BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES, the 4-PACK: DELUXE ATOMIC LIGHTER RECHARGEABLE PLASMA BEAM LIGHTERS, and the PICK-2-FOR-TUESDAY: 8OZ POO-POURRI BEFORE-YOU-GO TOILET SPRAYS (1 WILD FIG and 1 VANILLA MINT).
I didn’t get anything in January, but in February I got the 2-PACK: PASHMINAS OR INFINITY SCARVES BY TRI-COASTAL DESIGNS, the 4-PACK: WICKED CUTZ PREMIUM JERKY (a very tasty purchase), the TAMO EXTENDED BATTERY CASES FOR IPHONE 6, 7 & 8 (a NOT very tasty purchase), and another set of the 2-PACK: 8OZ POO-POURRI BEFORE-YOU-GO TOILET SPRAYS (they go over big at work).
I got five things in March, including three I use A LOT: the 2-PACK: MONSTER CORE POWER 800 8-OUTLET SURGE PROTECTOR WITH 2 USB PORTS and the EMOJI PILLOWS (POO) .
In April I got four sets of things, including the PICK-YOUR-6-FOR-TUESDAY: GOLDTOE SOCKS and the 6 OR 10-PACK: REUSABLE GEAR TIES; in June I got five. July I got my first INSTANT REGRET KIT, more POO-POURRI, and the MOTIF ESSENTIAL POUR OVER COFFEE BREWER W/ THERMAL CARAFE.
Man, then a LO-O-O-ONG dry spell until THIS MONTH, when I picked up a pair of NINJA 1000-WATT INSTANT MULTI-COOKER W/ 6 QT CERAMIC COATED POT & STEAM RACKs, more POO-POURRI, and - hey - today’s offering, good Vibes (I hope.)
That tots up to 25 items shipped for what what I calculate to be an annual fee of $59.88. Of course, if you add in all the time I waste on these forums…
@mediocrebot -
@wooters Leave my gushing member out of this, you weirdo.
@wooters Congratulations. You inspired me to stand up and take a picture. In addition to the pillows and blanket in the photo; the Lovesac couch, loveseat and chair were purchased from Morningsave with my mediocre VMP benefits applied. I definitely feel like I get excellent value for my sixty bucks a year.
@therealjrn @wooters Dammit, you beat me to it.
But you didn’t do the obvious… Do I dare?

Meh.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@wooters i buy wine. which helps me tolerate people. society is thankful.
I am not sure why we are all justifying wooters’ question, considering it is his/her/their state that is assessing the tax, not meh.
@wooters Perhaps the argument is that a membership, shipping, whatever you want to call VIP is not taxable? Take it up with your Gov’ner!
No need to malign the members of this forum, nor the owners of meh.
@mikibell The OP’s question isn’t about tax on mehmbership, it’s about the value of it. They didn’t find it worth it, and cancelled. All of the VMPs and current mehmbership think it is, evidenced by voluntarily continuing payment.
Everyone is getting exactly what they are paying for. The beauty of Meh, is that if you think you’ll buy more than one item or shipping that item is more than $5, it is a no brainer to join, and then quit and rejoin as needed if that’s your only value out of it.
A lot more people pay a lot more for Amazon Prime and don’t order anything too. Same for Sam’s Club and Costco members not saving more than their membership fees.
The point is that a membership value isn’t in the free shipping alone. That includes Mehmbership and VMPs (who pay a penny more per month to not use free shipping).
I think it is also free shipping across the other mediocre properties, morningsave.com and casemates.com, and for the latter, that’s a big deal. Apologies if that is only for VMP, which is closed to new VMPs.
As an anecdote, I cancelled my Amex Blue Everyday Preferred because the $95 yearly fee wasn’t worth the 6% cash back on groceries I saved. I switched to the regular (non-preferred) version and get 3% with no annual fee. What killed it for me was the other cards offering 5% cash back on groceries as a quarterly category.
VMP? Ride or die. Hodler.
/giphy ride or die
@mike808 For three weeks back in July, I had a package everyday from Amazon, Sundays included. That streak
got ruinedended when one coming via UPS arrived early.@mike808 yes. I’m still on my blue preferred first year where they don’t charge the fee. I’ll have to watch when it rolls over. But when I calculated it the first time it was going to work out because Kroger sells lowes gift cards. And there were certain things that I wanted from lowes. So when they do the 4x gas points. You buy a $250 Lowe’s gift card or lower to meet your month limit. You get the 6% back cause it’s a grocery store. Then you get $1 off 35 gallons of gas if you work it right. So if you shop at Kroger and Lowe’s anyway. And you do the math. You get 20% off on lowes. You can do the same with other gift cards. And Kroger has pretty decent sales.
It really depends on where you shop and if you can use gift cards. I basically have Kroger and Walmart here and Walmart doesn’t qualify as a grocery and their gas station doesn’t qualify either. But half the time I hit up Kroger and it might work out between their sales and gift cards and gas and rewards
@narfcake Sounds like me. The other day I realized I had nothing coming the next day and quickly found something with one-day shipping. Most of the UPS Surepost shipments arrive a day early, when UPS realizes they are coming to me anyway with a regular UPS delivery so they might as well bring the Surepost package as well. Kicking out the handoff to USPS eliminates a day.
@narfcake @ThunderChicken so I don’t know if you all know about this or not but you can sign up for USPS informed delivery. As In from the United States postal service. Here
https://informeddelivery.usps.com/box/pages/intro/start.action
As far as I can tell it uses the USPS system that scans your address in too mail you the package or letter to also send you an email that gives you a email scan of what you are expected to receive on what date. Or you can log in and see your planned inbound email for the next 5 days.
It will tell you what is coming into you mailbox every day with the scanned front once you confirm your address.
This of course doesn’t apply to UPS or FedEx but those can be signed up for too. Just shocked to see USPS finally update.
I mostly bring this up cause meh using sharepost but it’s interesting/useful in general. Especially if you are tracking obcessed
@unksol I do use Informed Delivery, but in the case of Surepost, by the time it gets into USPS’s hands, I already know from both UPS and USPS’s sites that the handoff has occurred, which means I’ll be getting it the next day. It’s great otherwise though, especially considering my mailbox is one of those neighborhood things and I don’t have to trek down these in lousy weather if it’s only for junkmail.
@mike808 @unksol What do you drive that can take 35 gallons of gas?
@Limewater @unksol It’s total. However, $1 off 35gal at $2.50/gal is ~$90, or only about 1% off. Using the Costco card gets you 4% at any gas station, including Costco gas. Sam’s is 5% CB on gas, so it is a little better if that’s your main reason to get one or the other because you max that.
@mike808 @unksol Wait-- I’m confused. First by your math, but also because I thought the Kroger gas discount only applied to one trip to the pump. Or are you saying that you only buy 35 gallons of gas in a year?
Either way, if you can apply it to all 35 gallons, you would save $35, which would be about 30% of the annual fee… Or did you mean something else by that 1%?
@Limewater
@unksol said:
I thought that meant that after purchasing 35gal, he would get $1 cash back. That works out to 1% CB on gas. If @unskol meant that “unlocks” some sort of $1 off per gallon discount, then yeah, I’m wondering what he drives that needs 35 gal. Or is it once you hit 35 gal, you get $1/gal off?
My gut tells me that a 40% discount on gas ($1/gal with gas at $2.50/gal) is not what is going on here or everyone would be on that like white on rice. Hence I think it is the 1% CB deal.
Thats still weaker than the 5% (Sam’s) and 4% (Costco) CB on gas.
@mike808 @unksol The Kroger gas thing is where, for every $100 you spend on groceries in a month, I think you get a point worth 10 cents off per gallon for one fill-up at the Kroger gas station. Or you get 10 one-cent points. I don’t remember.
You can roll the points over for up to a month. So, depending on how much you spend on groceries it can get to be a big discount.
I think during the summer they have extra bonus points you get for buying certain things or spending certain amounts. I don’t think we’ve ever gotten over 70 cents off per gallon at our house, but none of our cars hold much more than 10 gallons.
@Limewater @mike808 @unksol If you are like me, you bring both cars to the pumps at the same time, fill one, pull it out of the way and then fill the other (driven by an accomplice) and maybe a couple of gas cans if it’s mowing season…
(yes… I’m a cheap bastard…)
@chienfou @mike808 @unksol I would if scheduling and logistics were not so challenging. The idea has definitely crossed our minds. Maybe when the kids are older…
I really don’t go through a lot of gas during mowing season. 75% of the time, I use a push reel mower.
@Limewater @mike808 @unksol I have a riding mower for the bulk of my acre property and use a battery powered push mower for the trim and ‘under bushes’ stuff ( a woot! purchase at that…) so I go thru some gas.
Of course, that means you have to have both cars and the jerry cans approaching empty at the same times.
Once the kids are old enough, they will be glad to drive to any place, at least for a little while!
@chienfou @Limewater @mike808 my parents take both cars. I did it once with the 12 gallon Saturn and 4 cans in the trunk. The $400 97 expedition is a 35 gallon tank but the gas gauge is off. Tells me it’s on empty/zero miles… Just filled it today at “zero”. And only took 28. I usually bring two cans.
And you don’t spend $1000 I never could. They do 4x points on gift cards at least once a month. And they have amazon cards. So 6% off Amazon plus money off gas when it’s the closest store. Usually double or triple points on groceries once a month.
And yes necropost
I checked my history, and it seems to be barely worth it for me.
I’ve been VMP for 5 years, so $300 in fees.
Orders have been 53 on meh, 4 on casemates, and 11 on morningsave.
$300 / 68 = $4.41, so I like to think I’m a little ahead (don’t correct me and ruin in it for me if I’m not).
Plus socks!!!
Who is this selling their’s on eBay by the way??
@zachdecker You made me go look at mine dammit. Not certain on how long I have paid for VMP due to being off and on again before they were cutting it off.
But 83 orders here plus 29 orders on casemates. Total shipping would have been $731 so over 12 years worth of cost covered right there. Guess it is worth it.
@zachdecker I mean I have some unworn meh socks somewhere? Why are you interested? Meh stopped selling anything worth really buying years ago. So I cancelled vmp years ago and now I’m a little shit. When they do have something worth it the $5 shipping kills it. There’s definitely nothing worth it twice a month.
@zachdecker I haven’t bought anything and am not a member yet, so 0/0. Division by zero is undefined, which sums up my relationship with meh so far.
@zachdecker
I like to think of it as I would have spent $5 on each order, so 68 x 5= 340, means I saved $40!
Personally I am at 4 years and 63 orders.
YMMV
The only thing that upset me about membership was my own fault. I confused membership with VMP and missed out on stickers. I don’t know if I’m ahead or behind, but I got a Schrödinger’s toothbrush souvenir kit, track jackets, coffee maker, ceramic gel hot and cold packs, way too much instant eye shadow (what the hell was I thinking), Bluetooth speaker, pilot case, sheets, shower heads, entry level DSLR, cold brew coffee makers, coffee travel mugs, and finally my first purchase, a refurbished Krups coffee maker.
@j37hr0 Where has all this cool crap been in the twenty days I’ve been watching meh?
@ThunderChicken it went away a while ago for me but it’s still worth hanging out. What kind of cool crap were you looking for? You can check all the previous sales at https://mehstalker.com/
They might have things you would like
I forget who runs that and don’t see an about page. But if this isn’t for you that’s certainly fine.
I haven’t bought much in years but I enjoy some of the people and I don’t think they hate me yet
@ThunderChicken @unksol There’s a tab that says “about” right on the top!
Anyway:
@lichme @narfcake @ThunderChicken thank you for correcting me. I think I was looking at the bottom where most sites put it. I think. But @lichme def deserves the credit for all his excellent work. I just epically failed at finding who to credit.
There’s also morningsave for leftovers/otherstuff
@unksol It’s hard to say what cool crap I’d like, since it could be almost anything. A year ago I moved from a house that was completely furnished, right down to the silverware, to a nearly empty place. I do nearly all of my shopping online, including local groceries. So far in 2019 I have ordered 103 items from Amazon, not counting duplicates in the same order, and 17 from woot, which I’ve only been using for three weeks. Bezos better send me a Christmas card.
I had not been to mehstalker but had been to one of the similar sites run by the same person. Thanks!
My first day on meh was when the Ninja cooker was featured. I was tempted, but it has been lower on Amazon, and similar ones are sold at or below that price often.
I learned about meh while reading the history of woot and its founder. I like the community, even though my purchases might end up being rare. But let’s put it into perspective. Suppose I only buy one item every six months. I sure don’t buy one out of 180 items on Amazon!
Thank you to multiple VMPs for the whisper offers of stickers, but really I’m set.
I don’t need any stickers, during the last mehrathon there was a VMP only sale for stickers that I was pretty mad about at the time. So I went on Amazon and bought 1000 pack of skateboarding snowboarding surfing stickers. LOL. If any of you want stickers I’ll send you some random stickers. I’ve been handing them out at coffee shops to kids with stickers on their laptops.
I’m interested/bemused by how the image for this topic was selected. The lady in the image is Heidi Welsh, described as “founding executive director of the Washington-based Sustainable Investments Institute”.
Is VMP/Member status considered a “sustainable investment” by the bot that selects images?
I’m still averaging more than 1 purchase a month, so still an advantage.
@wooters
While I have bought 63 orders from the site, I consider the $5 almost like a club fee to hang out with a bunch of people that entertain me with their writing/wit…
In exchange, I (hopefully) also generate some value to the site. I was a woot! member long before the acquisition by Amazon, and have also ordered a bunch of stuff off there, tho recently (past 4 years or so) not so much.
It’s $5 a month, it gets me free shipping which is effectively $5 off so I only have to buy one thing a month to get my money’s worth. There’s an ever increasing number of Mediocre sites so I am planning to get all my holiday shopping done here.
Plus, I like having the little icon.
