@joelmw It's basically a stock market game. You buy certain stocks and hope they perform well.

@joelmw Just kind of need to dive in and get a team to start learning. With all the aspects and decisions that come up it's best to learn during the season. It's awesome to have someone who you can tap for knowledge and advice on a week per week basis but there is also plenty of expert advice available online.

@joelmw You pick players from actual teams and put them on your team. If they score in real life, you score in the game. You can also get points as your players improve their statistics, like a point for every 10 yards of offense. Poor play can actually cost you points. You have some extra bench slots, but players on the bench don't contribute to your score. It's best to pay attention and adjust your lineup every week, in case someone is hurt out has a bye week, or someone has a more promising matchup, like a normally mediocre player going up against Oakland's terrible defense. That's the basic idea, anyway.

Thanks, @jqubed. I was aware of the basic idea. I just wanna make sure I don't get screwed by misunderstanding one of the optional rules in our league. And, Idunno, keeping up with sports seems like such a fulltime thing for some people, I'm curious how I can play without becoming that. Of all things in the world, I'm content (yes, proud even) to let professional sports being something I'm actively ignorant of.

@jqubed To be clear though, I've never actually done any fantasy sports. The closest I've come is a couple of pathetic attempts to fill out a bracket for March Madness. Actually last year I just stole one from my favorite newspaper and did better than ever.

But when I was at the software company 20 years ago, the coders were all into it and always talking about it. My colleague for the last ten years (same team and same title, though we have different specific roles) is a sports nut and has been running a FFL as long as I can remember. Most recently my own daughter. I feel like the last holdout from this episode of Next Generation.

@dashcloud I'm kidding of course. This is my first time ever in a fantasy league, but I'm still maintaining the delusion that I'll reason or intuit my way to victory. And I'd rather make awful choices than sit and watch a machine make choices for me (unless I could at least plug in a bunch of variables).

Disclosure: @christinewas just gave me a brief tutorial. My head is swimming and I'm sure that I know just enough to be really dangerous to myself (trust me, I have a history). But at least I think I know what a waiver and a free agent are in FFL. So there's that. Plus she keeps suggesting that naming my team is super important. So, yeah, I'm confused about that too. Basically I'm confused. About many things.

Uhhh... False. First off, I gave an awesome and thorough tutorial. @joelmw still has time get the information all mixed up in his head, though. And the name thing is nonsense. I merely said, "I still haven't decided on my team name." See... he's already mixing things up.

@christinewas I'm sure your tutorial was excellent, but 1) I'm a newb and 2) I confuse myself easily. And 3) I am in fact a slow learner; give me a few years and I might be really good at this. I'll likely pull some really stupid stunts the first couple of times though. I get these ideas. Often--maybe usually--they fail big.

And you've mentioned the name thing a couple of times already. It's the one thing I'm most sure of. But yes, I mix things up.

BTW, we're sitting two feet from each other. Which is awesome: my kid is in town. But it's also kinda weird that we're having this conversation online.

@JonT With a beginner league I don't think there will be a problem with 14. There will probably be a lot of autodrafts and limited participation with free agency. I don't think anyone in this league will even notice the differences much (compared with 12). And I hate to say it - usually with these types of leagues active participation can be spotty as the weeks go on.

@JonT I'm more concerned about sandbaggers in the beginners/casual league: (cough) players in multiple leagues (cough) or with a bunch of experience (cough). But I have no idea about the number of players in the league, because I'm a total newb. Except that my tutor tells me (and this is logical) that it affects drafting. Or I think that's what she said. Did I mention I'm easily confused?

@JonT I would say that for the beginner league you can probably shoot for 2 8-person leagues. That will be a little more forgiving for the participants as there is more talent to go around.

As to the site, I believe the plan was ESPN unless @JonT called an audible and we're going somewhere else.

@mfladd rules and laws change all the time to keep up with the needs and natures of the bodies they govern. All the time.

@christinewas the red tape and political wrangling involved with this could take months, years. Far after my term (that I was contractually obligated to do - 1 month) is over. That being said, your current political situation is one that you very well could be nominated for said elected office. Think on that.

@mfladd I seriously doubt that would happen. And you can't scare me into silence. Some causes are worth taking up, regardless of the work or risks involved.

@mfladd I'm pretty sure that if there are goat bylaws, the first would be that you don't talk about the goat bylaws. I speak with the full authority of an old goat here. And having violated that prime of the theoretical bylaws, I'm pretty sure you can expect some sort of avenging death dealer.

I already joined the league and then I read your post...I was looking around the site and discovered there is a way to quit the league (once you have joined) and it says if you do quit that you have to be invited back in the league. It seems like you really want to play fantasy football in the meh league so I want someone that really really wants to play to have the opportunity to do so. I figured that can always play next year in the meh league ...I would like someone like yourself that it really means a lot to to play in the fantasy meh league to have the opportunity to do so.

I wanted to play just to learn about fantasy football leagues but it's not something I just have to do . So @JonT if you will let @Odi take my spot on the meh Beginner league A team ( east division) that's ok by me..let me know and I'll quit the league so that you can invite him to join the league instead.

Or @harrison can do this apparently: Just use the LM tools to add a second owner to the team in question, then after that owner has accepted, use the LM tools to delete the original owner. Problem solved.

@becca I'm not even sure if ESPN lets you schedule a draft for less than an hour away. It automatically cancelled when we weren't full at noon. If it DOES let us still schedule for one, I'll be a little frustrated to have lost the prep time in the draft room.

@JonT Sorry I didn't catch this sooner, @caegee, would've helped out some. Your team looks like it turned out pretty good all the same.

The draft is probably the most overwhelming part for newcomers, since it happens fast and you don't get a lot of time to plan stuff out. Setting up your team for each week's games and going over the Add/Drop list for players you want to swap around, all that is a lot easier and slower paced. Hit me up here or on the league page if you need some help.

@Rosstafari Thanks for the offer of help. i set it up by moving all the injured and suspended players off the list and putting some bench players in. I have a couple options, so I went w/ players whose teams I like. Can we see each others activated players/teams for the week ? If so, check out what I did and feel free to comment.

@marklog maybe. I went through my lineup (pushed enough buttons til I found it ) and set it up. basically it was moving all the suspended and injured players to the bench. lol.
I did this back when we used paper. And sat around a conference table and trashed talked through the draft.
We got to pick extras for each position and then activate our team for the week.
This does not work that way. I only have one QB. He was 6th on my QB list.
oh well. I saw him down the list of auto drafts coming up and nabbed him since I didn't have a qb yet.

I didn't know how to type in the names I had for positions so I ended up taking a lot of the auto drafts and they aren't so great.
The scoring here is different too.

did I mention I miss paper ?

1) If you're talking Le'Veon Bell, I'd trade you for him. Because I'm nice like that.
2) The fact that you've done this before puts you ahead of many of the rest of us (including me), so, yaknow, you'll definitely be fine.
3) The fact that you have favorite teams probably counts for something. I hate the NFL. So there's that too.

1. That's very nice of you. I accept responsibility for not figuring this out ahead of today. I have him benched and have some choices to fill in for him. So let's see how it goes, maybe some future trades. I wish you well !! I need to check out everyone else's teams.

1. I played FFB many years ago when it was all on paper ( just in case you didn't get that part;) )
   The whole ESPN set up is new to me.
   The team make up, the amount of players you get, how it scores. My head doth spin.

2. I live in the land of Bills. You are a fan to survive here. You at least say you are fan to survive here !

And I should probably disclose that I have been to 3 games - 1 in Buffalo and 2 49er games. << the best
But again, that was long ago. In the days of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice. See I know some player names. But none of them play anymore !

1) Having been talked into this by @christinewas, I decided to join a FFL league at work too. I got Bell in that league (mostly on purpose, but not fully appreciating his status) . . . and a few other players who are out of commission the first week. I had to scramble to get a couple of free agents and I'm actually running with two questionable players in my first game there.
2) I feel a little better. ;-)

@sammydog01 I'm a Wilson fan because of the time he gives to Seattle Children's hospital. (The team's wives do these great girls day things with patients, too.) A "strong against cancer" video of him with my young second cousin clenched it. Even after his team humiliated my Broncos in the SB.

@christinewas I feel kinda bad. I've got a serious chance of winning in my league at work because I started Brady and my opponent started Peyton. I'll take a 27.62 to 5.90 spread every week, whoever's giving me those points.

That being said, @mfladd, I could only stomach 14 seconds of your video and my getting points from such a scumbag fits well with my "I HATE the NFL" FFL team motto.
