I’m all for cutting folks slack and I’m a hardcore descriptivist and like to think of myself as grammatically—in addition to politically—antifa. This shit is in and of itself forgivable.
Far less forgivable—and what probablyabsolutely doesn’t bother any of us as much as it should—is the particular “and I” crowd who are with unintentional irony grammar snobs about it, who ostentatiously “correct” others and/or are arrogantly and self-righteously intransigent in their error. These tend to be the same ignorant fucks who insist that we oughtn’t end sentences with prepositions or boldly split our infinitives. About which they are similarly categorically wrong.
They often come locked and loaded with lectures about how text speak and emojis and social media and AAE are “corrupting” language and turning younger generations into illiterate fools (don’t get them started on Millennials in general). We should start by bringing back compulsory cursive. Heavens to Betsy, this country’s gone to hell in a hand basket ever since educators were disallowed the application of corporal punishment.
If you get them going, they’re likely to further devolve into diatribes about “critical race theory”, “cancel culture”, “wokeness”, “political correctness”, etc. None of which, to be clear, they know shit about (hence the quotes). But they sure as fuck have righteous opinions the rest of us need to hear.
Me approves.
No, it bothers you just the right amount it seems to me.
Probably my biggest and most petty pet peeve.
@asherrios you and I both
@asherrios @ybmuG I too.
Ugh, yes - especially in songs!
I learned this embarrassingly late, and now I take great pains to ensure that I use the correct pronouns. It can be a hard habit to break.
I have never noticed if I am doing this right or wrong.
