May the fourth be with you!
8On this the sacred day we pay our respects to a treasure of a franchise, Star Wars, let us give thanks to Grogu who helped keep it vital by being so darned cute.
Feel free to discuss your feelings about the Star Wars universe!
I’ll start. In May of 1977 my 9 and 1/2 year old self sat in wonder watching Star Wars for the first time. I was in a theatre with a huge screen and rocking seats. It was at capacity. From the beginning crawl of the story line to the end credits I was mesmerized. Movies were changed forever in my heart and mind.
Many years and a few not as great as Star Wars movies later, along came The Mandolorian. Baby Yoda/Grogu won me over as quickly as R2-D2 did in the first movie. I’m happy that Grogu put some magic and whimsy back into Star Wars.
It may be Star Wars but can’t we keep some of that cantina energy going in the not war times?

I just never got into the whole Star Wars thing, guess it’s just not my genre. It sure did take on a life of it’s own though!
The big thing that I remember from WAY BACK in 1977, (I was just 11) and it was August not May, was hearing that Elvis died. As I sat on the floor watching the news of it all, It almost felt like the world stopped for a minute. THAT was the first time I remember feeling so saddened and taken back by something that was so much bigger than me or my world. At the time, I found it really strange how much it affected me. It wasn’t until then that I became a fan of Elvis, his movies and music.
@Lynnerizer I too remember that day vividly. My Mom was a huge fan. Even went to one of his concerts. So it was a good long solemn week at my house. He’s still here when I watch his movies or hear him sing. One of the first to unwittingly do music videos like jailhouse rock. Taken too soon.
You meant the canteen energy, right?
@chienfou Right! That video cracked me up last night. Jeff Vader. lol
And the wet trays! So universal in its truth. Did you dry these in a rainforest?
@milstarr
Yes there are just so many brilliant lines in this. ”I’m your boss / you’re Mr Stevens”?
This still makes me giggle every time I watch it!!
The original movie was one of the first dates my wife and I went on a few weeks after we met. We watched it at the drive-in in Boulder CO from the back end of her hippie van! Simpler times…
@chienfou That’s a great memory!
@milstarr
Hitting 48 years this fall…
I am only a fan of the original trilogy and Rogue One.
I am only a fan of the original movie and Star Warp’d.
@aetris Now Star Warp’d see I must.
@milstarr Fair warning, there’re a LOT of fart jokes.
@aetris @milstarr
Spaceballs was fun too.
@aetris @chienfou Loved Spaceballs!
@yakkoTDI
Has no one here seen the original Star Wars parody: “Hardware Wars” [circa 1978]?
You’re welcome:
@PhysAssist Seen it? I have it on DVD! The Augie Ben Doggie and Darph Nader fight is epic.
I saw the original for the first time at a massive old style theater in downtown Salt Lake City, from front row center. The dive into the trench during the final battle induced vertigo. It was glorious. The soundtrack already had me hooked from the first opening bars, and it only got better from there.
@werehatrack I played the cantina song on my record player and made up silly dances for months after I saw the movie. All the music was incredible!
Checking in a day late with my dork card

I also do book fairs
@capnjb In cowboy boots???
@capnjb @Kidsandliz it makes my nerd heart happy. That’s some truly fabulous Star Wars love.
@capnjb @Kidsandliz
I would say engineer’s boots- to me Western or Cowboy boots have to have narrow toes and higher stacked heels- the better to insert and retain them in stirrups without having to look down upon mounting horseback.
@capnjb
That is the way…
I read the book before I saw the Original movie
I was really impressed how the beginning of the movie followed the book. I saw this with my future husband at a local theater. My house is now a haven of Star Wars memorabilia also star trek. I guess we’re a bunch of space cadets.
@jkawaguchi
I should hope so … considering the book was a novelization of the screenplay George Lucas wrote!
@chienfou So you’re telling us that George Lucas shot first?
@aetris
https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/books/a41911824/star-wars-novelization/
@chienfou It was not an optimization of the screenplay. It was book that he wrote before the movie came out. It was double sided and had the empires empires straight back on the flipside of the book.
@jkawaguchi
Most reliable sources say that it was ghost written by Alan Dean Foster based on Lucas’ screenplay
@chienfou @jkawaguchi
From the Esquire-link above:
“Even though the book came out before the movie, Foster was hired by George Lucas to write a tie-in novelization of Lucas’s screenplay.
The book hit shelves early because Star Wars, the film, was late.
20th Century Fox initially wanted Star Wars in theaters for Christmas of 1976, but because of production delays largely connected to the incomplete visual effects, the film was pushed back to May 1977.”
@PhysAssist
Exactly…
Somebody’s first exposure to Star Wars had to be the Holiday Special. Poor soul.
@zhicks1987

I saw that! Sooo funny!
My experience of seeing Star Wars was at a midnight showing in May 1997, with a bunch of my fellow [nerd/brainiac/geek] high school ex-classmates on our graduation night.
It was awesome!
[Maybe?] Interestingly, although SWMBO’s birthday is May 4th, she had never seen a Star Wars or Star Trek movie [or show] until i dragged her to them shortly after we met and in 1989, but she has since become [almost] as big a fan as I always have been.
HIKING! VIKINGS! STRIKE KING [BRAND FISHING LURES]! AWESOME!
