Looking for advice -- Treat yo self edition
1So I am at a point in my life where I can spend about $1,500 for a “toy”. I want two things. A high end gaming PC or a 14gal unitank fermentor.
I’ve been wanting to get a gaming PC for about 3 years, but I haven’t had the money until now. When I price it out, it’s about 1200 - 1500 dollars.

Now, my problem is that I can use that money to get a serious conical fermenter (with all the accessories) for my homebrewing hobby.

I think I’d appreciate the fermenter more, but I could really use a new PC.
Reasons to get a PC
- Could use it every day
- Family can use it
- You’ll end up getting one anyways
Reasons to get a Fermenter
- It won’t become obsolete
- It’s fucking bad ass
- be able to brew more beer
- I’ll have it forever
I’m looking for some new perspectives…

It’s a really bad time to build a PC. GPU and RAM prices are through the roof due to cryptocurrency mining.
@woodhouse I agree. It’s one of the reasons making me think twice about getting a PC.
@Kevin Buying prebuilt (something like iBuyPower) might come closer to the MSRP for parts, but you’re still paying more than you should when prices are “normal”. Who knows if this is the new normal or not, though.
I say the brewing gear, as active hobbies are much better for your health. Also the brewing gear won’t be out of date as soon as you turn it on.
@moondrake Hey, I built my PC over 3 years ago and it’s still kickin’!
@woodhouse
@woodhouse I didnt say disfunctional. I used a sony viao desktop for 12 years, till the power supply burned out and was prohibitively expensive to replace. But computer technology is moving so fast that by the time you power up your hot new device you are three generations behind.
@moondrake Here’s hoping we didn’t jinx me!
@moondrake @kevin could always get a standing desk…;-) And VR games are getting better and better, and they can be quite a workout.
I say go with the homebrew kit, and do a frankenbuild.
Use existing parts (if you have some) like power supply, drives, case, etc, and get a really good motherboard, and a mid-level processor. The last, maybe even used. That way you can save some money on the build and still have room for upgrades down the road. Put the real money into a good video card for the best gaming experience.
Heck, if you’re computer is reasonably capable, maybe just upgrade your video card to something badass.
I suck at answering your question, since my reply was basically, “both”. Sorry.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Buy an xbox one x and some games then use the remaining money to just buy pre-made beer.
Sony PS4 Pro, VR headset and an 11 gal. fermenter?
I’ve always believed in consoles for gaming. They’re purpose built so you pay less for similar performance. Plus, you never have to worry about things like “will I have enough RAM to run this?” or “is this gonna glitch out because of some anomaly with my GPU?”
Ya, Siri effing with my text again. I meant “7 gallon fermenter”. She doesn’t listen well sometimes.
@ruouttaurmind I bet she’d listen better on a $1,500 gaming rig
@medz Siri? I seriously doubt it.
