Look Smart Trivia: Paris By Decade
5Is Paris a city of timeless elegance or cutting-edge style? Both, which is what makes it challenging to pin down when these photos were taken. Here are five shots of perhaps the most photographed city on Earth. All I’ll tell you is that they were all taken during the 20th century. As we did with New York By Decade, your job is to identify which decade they were taken in. The first to get all five right will win a $5 Meh coupon. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
I’m guessing @lehigh doesn’t dive for the remote when the commercials start. Or so it seems from how aptly they identified the countries of origin for each ad in our Commercials of the World video quiz:
- Pakistan
- New Zealand
- Poland
- Tanzania
- Trinidad & Tobago

Oooh la la! Nice job pulling out the win @lehigh.
@cinoclav And so it doesn’t get lost, if you haven’t seen, check out this Atlas Advertising Reel for some awesome (and exportant!) T&T advertising. @JasonToon what I loved about that last one was it was basically unGoogleable, even when entering the text of the ad!
MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
@cinoclav @JasonToon @lehigh yep. you weren’t going to find that one. Well done.
I so want to post the answers!
I thought I figured out the gimmick but the last image throws things out of sync. Oh well, still worth a shot.
1: 1950s
2: 1930s:
3: 1910s
4: 1890s
5: 1970s
Edit: doh, all taken in the 20th century. Well, not editing the wrong answer out of this one.
My va-va-vroom guesses:
(I made a few edits…these are tricksy puzzles!)
I’ll give it a go:
Keep guessing folks, I don’t see what I’m 99.9% sure are the right answers yet.
Alright fine, I’ll post mine.
@cinoclav And folks, since @cinoclav won Monday I don’t believe they’re eligible. So if you like those answers, use them!
@cinoclav @lehigh PS, when the dust settles, I’d be interested to know how you came to your answers!
@lehigh @UncleVinny May as well share now. If I’m wrong it won’t matter and if I’m right, you’ve already posted the same answers.
@cinoclav You’re a saint! A saint walking around down here among us unwashed, reeking sinners.
@UncleVinny Lol - I hope what I found is truly correct. Though I kind of prefer to walk with the sinners.
1950s
1910s
1940s
1930s
1960s
I’m not at all too proud to borrow @cinoclav’s answers! I mean, $5 is at stake, and it’s practically the same as just looking up something in Wikipedia, amirite?!
Ok, here’s my stab at it:
1950s
1930s
1910s
1920s
1970s
While the people have changed, the actual sites haven’t! Just back from the city of love yesterday…
