Look Smart Trivia: Mystery Theme
4Yes, it’s time again for everyone’s favourite enigmatic Internet visual trivia riddle, which has the added bonus for me of being not quite Googleable. Decipher the clues, find their common element, and be the first to post all five, plus a sixth image extending the chain of references, and you’ll nab a decidedly straightforward, mystery-free $5 Meh coupon. Does @lehigh spend all their time immersed in half-forgotten screen gems of days gone by, or are they really good at IMDB? It has to be one or the other, after they sussed out the five movies starring our unlikely trios of Co-Stars:
- It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (Jimmy Durante, Don Knotts, Peter Falk)
- Americathon (Fred Willard, Elvis Costello, Tommy Lasorda)
- Hawaii (Caroll O’Connor, Julie Andrews, Gene Hackman)
- Tempest (Molly Ringwald, Susan Sarandon, Raul Julia)
- Tomorrow Never Dies (Teri Hatcher, Hugh Bonneville, Ricky Jay)

On yesterday, my only advantage (besides timing) may have been knowing all but Raul Julia on sight (and I should have gotten him). Love these contests!
John Steinbeck novels (and novellas)
(Grapes of Wrath)
@tekbot I think you got it. Remembering my high school term paper, “Biblical allusion in 3 John Steinbeck novels”
@lehigh I Hope so! I was nervous about The Pearl but then I found pictures of Minnie Pearl and she’s definitely the lady in the hat. I actually recently finished Grapes of Wrath, loved it, and glanced over Steinbeck’s bibliography afterwards; so it came pretty quick when I saw the tortillas and the bus.
@tekbot I was stuck on the bus thinking it was “Speed” and then when I realized that 3 was a cannery it fell together. BTW did you know that many of the characters in East of Eden have names beginning with A or C to reflect the biblical rivalry of Cain and Abel?
@tekbot Wow. That’s impressive. I’d have never, in a million years.
That’s some hat on that lady. Is that rolled deli meat on there?
For those who were spared and/or denied Hee Haw:
@lehigh She was a classic. I’m also feeling a bit old if people don’t know who she is.
@cinoclav @lehigh She was the one photo I knew right off. The price tag on the hat is a dead giveaway.
@cinoclav @lehigh @sammydog01
/giphy me too. Minnie Pearl
@lehigh @llangley @sammydog01 Yup. One glance at it and I was already thinking ‘pearls.’
@llangley Maybe that’s a dolphin named Pearl that Minnie Driver is smooching. (Side note - I totally love her.)
@cinoclav @lehigh I was just asking my mom the other day what the deal was with Minnie Pearl’s hat price tags. Is it a joke about her being forgetful? Or how she was so proud of how much (or how little?!) she spent on it that she wanted everyone to know?
…or was it just random?
