U2 spy plane incident. Francis Gary Powers shot down over USSR. Sentenced to 10 years for spying, he was returned 2 years later in a prisoner exchange.
USSR invades Afghanistan in Dec. 1979, ending hopes of a Cold War truce.
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, convicted for spying for the USSR for delivering nuclear secrets. They were executed in the electric chair. Some controversy lives to this day concerning Ethel’s culpability.
Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, “Operation Danube.” A joint invasion of Czechoslovakia by five Warsaw pact nations designed to stop reforms within the country and strengthened the Moscow-oriented Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
Korean Airlines flight 007 Boeing 747 shot down over the USSR Sept. 1 1983. The airliner had gone off course. 269 passengers and crew killed.
@PocketBrain Wow, that #2 one was a hard one. The Afghanistan invasion was one of three options I thought of but couldn’t find any collaborating videos or photos for any of the three. I have doubt on my answer of the Arab-Israeli Conflict so good luck to you.
Oddly enough, after having been shot down out of the stratosphere in his U2 over USSR, Gary Powers died when the helicopter he had been flying for a TV News channel. Normally, he could have landed safely using autorotation, but he aborted at the last moment, having seen children on the ground in the area.
I got Afghanistan mixed up with Czechoslovakia until I saw Jimmy Carter (= Afghanistan). For a moment I thought #5 would be a meh joke of some kind until I saw where it was shot down.
I’m just happy to see some other people answering! Not that I don’t want every opportunity to win, but these are fun and I figure if it’s only the same little group of us trying they would end it.
@cinoclav I usually stop by and look at the Look-Smart Trivia, but I’m generally uninformed on the subject matter; I really couldn’t pass up Cold War however. I’m no aficionado, but it is an area of interest; I was in the Navy at the end of the USSR period of the Cold War and my father was a Russian linguist for the US Army and stationed in NSA during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1963. Probably not included because it would be just too easy to guess; that was the closest we got to a hot war during the Cold War period.
@cinoclav@Ignorant I read that article you linked about the body shaming bitch. She asked for a community service assignment speaking at schools about the danger of social media. They sentenced her to graffiti removal instead. I like that judge.
@PocketBrain I stop by with my googling fingers warmed up. If nothing else I usually learn something, and some days I find a fascinating wormhole to explore. My favorite was the article about emotional support animals where the author bought a certificate on the internet for a llama and took it into stores. There were photos.
@PocketBrain Truly interesting history with you and your father. Mine was not a military family except for my uncle. Unfortunately he lived across the country and I never got to know him very well. But I do know that he was an Air Force pilot that didn’t talk about his service much. Apparently he flew a lot of spy missions. He passed away in October so I guess I’ll never know any more than that.
I dunno know about you, but I think Look Smart is a lot more fun when it’s not obvious who the winner is until I announce it. Like yesterday’s Mystery Theme! Drum roll please… the winner was… @Trillian! They figured out the triple-double-letter theme and posted one of their own. It might be the hardest anyone’s ever worked for a $5 coupon:
Committee
Barrenness
Addressee
Bookkeeper
Whippoorwill
and 6. Mississippi

@JasonToon Thanks, Jason, for continuing the trivia games long enough for me to finally win something! And I’m sure that I have worked harder for five bucks before!
@PocketBrain You have successfully pointed out my heedlessness in failing to post a picture of my car, Hooloovoo. Cheerlessness and sullenness abound.
@JasonToon@Trillian This was the tricksiest one of these I’ve seen and I’m really impressed that you cracked it!
I could’ve studied those pics for a lifetime and never even come close to the correct answer.
@Trillian Curious how you caught on to the answer. Did you search for what a few of them had in common? The only ones I would have guessed for sure were ‘committee’ and ‘whippoorwill.’
@cinoclav After I wrote down my guesses, I figured there was some sort of pattern, but I didn’t know how to define it. So I googled “bookkeeper whippoorwill words”. That brought up a vocabulary list of triple double words, which yielded the rest. There is no way in hell I would have ever guessed barrenness or addressee.
I lucked into this one, seeing the video pop up on my YouTube feed before the forum posted. Gave me a chance to work on the answers; three of them popped out at me immediately, and I had to work a little for the other two. The correct answer is usually up already before I get here!
@paulg1982 It’s up! Post away!
@sammydog01 Aww… I’m rooting for @paulg1982. I hope he will try this again.
@sammydog01 Oh well, maybe next time.
@paulg1982 Maybe tomorrow?
U2 shot out of the air while flying over USSR and the pilot Francis Gary Powers was captured.
Arab-Israeli Conflict
Spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are executed in 1953
Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968
Korean Air Lines Jumbo shot down by Soviet fighter in 1983
Who won the last one? @jasontoon
@medz Oops, I’ll add that in but might be an hour or so.
@dave

@cinoclav Yes! We need more playmates!
@sammydog01

@Ignorant Ah yes, the body shamer!

@cinoclav oh no didn’t know that was her…I had no idea who that pic was.
@cinoclav @Ignorant Blame the bot that picked the photo,
@Ignorant @sammydog01 Just eye candy, I’m okay with the bot.

@JasonToon I don’t know…I still think there is something to the Reagan theory…
@JasonToon So that’s what the hullaballoo was about.

@Trillian Only a Trillian could reference a Hooloovoo here.
@JasonToon @PocketBrain Well, I’m glad @Trillian got it when she did. Otherwise there would have been a lot of sleeplessness.

@Trillian That’s what I figured. Nice job! Tried committee and whippoorwill and ended up here: https://www.vocabulary.com/lists/34423
@cinoclav Yep, that’s the list I found!
Yay, me!
