Look Smart Trivia: Children's Book Illustrators
5One of the most fun things about having kids - and one of the things I miss the most now that mine have moved on to the Young Adult shelves of the library - is sharing children’s books with them. There’s nothing simple about creating illustrations bold enough to capture a child’s attention, but subtle enough to convey beauty and meaning to an adult. Here are five great practitioners of the form, and five great excuses for me to page through some works of art my kids have outgrown (for now). Be the first to name all five artists and you’ll score a $5 Meh coupon. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
Wow, I thought last Friday’s Mystery Theme was pretty challenging, but @tekbot worked it out so quickly, the discussion left John Steinbeck behind in favor of Minnie Pearl:
- Tortillas (Tortilla Flats)
- Minnie Pearl (The Pearl)
- Cannery (Cannery Row)
- A cup of gold (Cup of Gold)
- The runaway bus from the movie Speed (The Wayward Bus)
and 6. Grapes (The Grapes of Wrath), posted by @tekbot

Too busy starting IV’s to jump on this one but it hits home for one reason. My aunt was an illustrator who had done many awesome books, including some Little Golden Books. Check out Dora Leder.
OWLS! TOWELS! JOWLS! AWESOME!
@cinoclav VERY impressive! Awesome stuff indeed.
POKER! JOKER! NOT MEDIOCRE! AWESOME!
@medz Valiant effort but @curtise is spot on.

@cinoclav @curtise We shall see.
@medz I’m pretty sure the signed illustration says all we need to know.
@cinoclav Garth wasn’t the only illustrator for that book.
@medz But the question wasn’t to name who illustrated the books, it was to name who did these particular illustrations.
@cinoclav What do you want I should do? Post the same answers as the previous user? Post nothing? Admit defeat? I’m waiting for the official announcement.
@cinoclav @medz Say Congratulations?
@cinoclav @sammydog01 I haven’t seen any announcement that they won, so…
@medz That’s because JasonToon hasn’t posted the new trivia yet. But I appreciate your hope and enthusiasm.
@cinoclav @medz Good point.
/giphy I’ll allow it.
No Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone??? Disappointed! They’re the best children’s books illustrators ever! They were twins and would pass a drawing back and forth until it was finished. They specialized in drawing period clothes. I mean, look at this pic from The Frog Prince:
Did I win?
@cengland0 So close, but #6 was wrong.
One berry two berry pick me a blueberry
@heartny We had the Jack and Janet series of readers, complete with workbooks. I hated those workbooks.
@Barney They must be Dick and Jane’s cousins from the midwest.
All good, but my favorite will always be Tomi Ungerer.
