As long as I can go at my own pace and take as many scenic detours as I want I’m in. If it’s a scheduled boring hop from one gas station to the next just to reach a destination, no thanks.
It depends. I dislike them when I have to do all the driving, I hate them when I’m by myself, and I love them when I get to be a passenger and chill while watching the countryside travel by
Love 'em. If I have to be at my destination at a certain time, I try to give myself at least a few extra hours to see the sights along the way. Otherwise it’s “I’ll get there when I get there.”
Best road trip ever: my grandma took me to Portugal when I was 12. We rented a car in Faro and spent two weeks roaming the Algarve. No schedule, no destination, just the two of us and a shoebox full of maps. It’s influenced how I travel ever since.
It’s possible to travel from Columbia City, Indiana (where I grew up) to Columbia City, Oregon without ever leaving US-30. I always thought that would make a fun road trip. Maybe make it a twofer and try to follow the old Lincoln Highway route as much as possible.
So I just had my drive with my brother from Portland back to Michigan and it didn’t go so well. I made it two days in and hoped on a flight back home bc all he did was scream at me the entire time. I definitely concur the only way to take long road trips is by yourself.
It’s fine as long as I get to be the passenger most of the time. When I drive I put on an audio book, and get behind a truck so I can zone out for a couple hours.
For those who voted ‘hate them’ would you change your vote if there was an option for ‘love them if venturing solo?’
@njfan Yes!
@hchavers @njfan Can I at least leave the kids home?
For long road trips I fly.
It’s fine. I’m usually the one driving on the long road trips, so all is well as long as I had a good night’s rest.
Hours driving through new sights without distractions, listening to my favorite music over my car speakers, and left alone with my own thoughts.
Oh, do you mean with my chatty family who hate my playlist? NOOO!!!

@tweezak I try to either have no set arrival time, or schedule several extra hours for sightseeing.

I love them. I’ve driven from Kansas to
and many other shorter, but multiple day trips.
People from the Great Plains: “Why would I fly when it’s only a 10 hour drive?”
Depends on where I am going and who is with me.

@dannybeans Don’t blink when you go through Columbia City, Oregon (pop. 2000) on your way to the coast or you will miss it!
@macromeh Ditto Columbia City, Indiana (though at 8500 it does seem to be the bigger of the two).

@Star2236 Is your driving that bad?
@sammydog01
No lol I only drove once for a couple of hours. All in all, he was just very stressed out and took everything out on me.
@Star2236 well that sounds terrible. Sorry

@Huncut Audio books are great for road trips. I like trucks for bad weather.
Long road trips are among my fav things. 1000 miles here goes. : )
Audiobooks and podcasts ftw.
If the kids are in the car? Haaaaaaate them. If I’m driving solo? Love them
I was ok with taking the kids but the spouse NO WAY!!!
