Double blind placebo controlled studies show that zinc gluconate (sold in stores as ‘Cold-ez’) is effective at reducing the length and severity of a cold. Anecdotally, I’ve seen this myself. As there is little harm to taking zinc for a week or two, I see no reason not to take it. Even if the effect is placebo, it’s inexpensive and safe so…
@squishybrain I prefer the brand zicam. Being using it for years. As long as you take it early enough in the cold progression it will shorten your cold significantly.
@chienfou@shannenelaine@squishybrain Anecdotally, I have seen good results if I take elderberry + zinc supplements at the early signs of cold symptoms.
Brandy hot toddy with Ironwort tea. Not sure if it actually helps, but it helps you feel no pain after two of them when you’re a kid and your dad makes you one with 4 oz of brandy when you’re home sick and he doesn’t want to deal with you
A double-shot of peppermint schnapps. And not the expensive, smooth stuff. Get the cheap stuff that feels like a sock full of nails going down. It’ll clear your head so you can breathe long enough to get some sleep.
I haven’t had a cold or flu in the past five years. I did get Covid but it was mild with a sore throat and low grade fever. When I do get sick I just stay home and away from people and drink lots of water and rest. Seems like hydrating and rest are the best.
I assume you don’t mean the careful tasting of fine brewed coffee
Correct, though if you’d followed the link I provided that would be abundantly clear since there isn’t even a disambiguation listing for the other on that page.
@ItalianScallion@mediocrebot
I’d actually attempted to have an emoticon at the end of my post. That led to my creating the topic “weird”.
And weirdly… It now seems to be working for me!
It is an old wives tale for a reason homemade chicken soup works I make a thick chicken noodle stew if it is for someone else I make homemade noodles for myself I don’t usually feel well enough if I am sick to bother with the homemade noodles. Eat it for 3 days and am right as rain.
Sleep
@cengland0 I totally agree. I’ll sleep 14-16 hours in one day while taking nyquil and chugging juice. That usually gets me back to 80-90% by day 2.
@cengland0 @NapkinEater
I believe there’s actually some science to that!
Lemon ginger tea with honey, soup and sleep.
All of the above.
@Salanth I agree!
Bourbon, weed, and sleep.
Cocaine and hookers.
@shahnm not good, You could catch some things that penicillin put in cure!
@shahnm Do you need to use my trunk?
@shahnm I asked my wife; she said Mexican Coca-Cola and we could role play the hooker part.
Does anyone know the best way to catch a cold?
@accelerator
Extend the role playing…
@accelerator @shahnm Actually taking her up on the offer might get a cold response.
Red Hot Chili Peppers.
What I got, you got to get it put it in you.
KuoH
@kuoh sounds like an awesome music group!
DIPLOMAT! RAT-A-TAT! FAT CAT! AWESOME!
@kuoh No joke. I put chilies and honey in my chicken noodle soup. Opens the passages right up.

Supplemental zinc was actually in the OTC recommendations we would give CoViD patients. It’s good for many viral things.
@chienfou @shannenelaine @squishybrain Anecdotally, I have seen good results if I take elderberry + zinc supplements at the early signs of cold symptoms.
@squishybrain
Yeah I use zinc too. In addition to the cocaine and hookers, of course.
@shahnm
Good plan! Wouldn’t want to:
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@chienfou
That’s why it’s important to have plenty of cocaine (and hookers…) on hand.
@shahnm Of course!

Vicks on the bottom of the feet covered with white cotton socks
@user18658159
Extra sleep and extra calories.
@yakkoTDI I guess it’s feed a cold, starve a fever. And all these years I thought it was starve a cold, feed a fever.
@ItalianScallion I feed both. Your body is fighting and that is like exercise which requires more fuel.
NyQuil and then tea for when I’m not sleeping
Elderberry syrup for the win
@BrendaJ can’t hurt, and tastes pretty good.
@BrendaJ @pmarin
Wait. Are you… Are you King Arthur, King of the Britons??

@accelerator Same.
What… No cupping fans?
@chienfou Oh yeah that’s just weird. The skin thing. Not saying I wouldn’t try it but…
I assume you don’t mean the careful tasting of fine brewed coffee. That I would definitely do.
@pmarin
Correct, though if you’d followed the link I provided that would be abundantly clear since there isn’t even a disambiguation listing for the other on that page.
@chienfou @pmarin I suppose we could let Mediocrebot decide…
/showme cupping

Hot shower and bed
@Cerridwyn I read that as ‘hot shower in bed’ and now that’s all I want.
@Cerridwyn @squishybrain
/youtube flashdance movie chair shower scene
EDIT damn, 1983.
@Cerridwyn @pmarin @squishybrain Hot showgirl in bed? If you can’t avoid the misery, you might as well enjoy it.

@kuoh @pmarin @squishybrain
Oh my
Vicks on bottoms of my feet w thick socks nightly. I do this at the first sign of feeling yuck and it helps me greatly!
Chicken vegetable soup with just enough turmeric and just a bit of chili pepper. (In other words, the stuff I make.)
