@sammydog01 wow i am an idiot. I have never thought of using my egg slicer for things like strawberries. Thank you, my baking skills just grew a little.
Nice.
Strawberries are heavy feeders, a feeding of liquid fertilizer (like Rapid Grow or an organic one) helps during fruiting season.
Also, in a hot climate, a thin layer of mulch on the ground around the plants (don’t bury them!) helps to moderate moisture. Some people use straw, peat moss or whatever. The plants don’t like to dry out between waterings. Don’t even try to get those monster berries the store has. The berries for market are grown to be big, store a long time and look good. Homegrown berries are grown for flavor.
Good luck with those berries! You have a great start.
I took a ‘Master Gardener’ course and stayed in it for 4 years. I had to research many questions when I worked with the public…
@RiotDemon Mine pull flowers off the plants on my deck. Even marigolds. They love green tomatoes. They drink my hummingbird food. I still wouldn’t launch them.
@sammydog01 luckily my squirrels hang out in my backyard. I’m currently growing tomatoes in my front and no squirrels or bunnies have gotten to them.
If I end up buying this house, I’ll put in drip irrigation so I can grow stuff in the back… But then everything will have to have a fence and a net to keep those cute little suckers out.
I actually like the squirrels. I was devastated when I had to bury one in my yard. I found out that wild squirrels can live a long time, so I might of been burying a squirrel that I’ve looked at for years.
@RiotDemon You can put netting over your plants, like you said. They can still get sun and water, insects for pollination, but the larger critters can’t get them. I put a piece of pvc tubing (sticking up about 7 ft. high) on each of the 4 corners of my raised bed (built it myself!) and covered it with netting. So far…so good.
Good luck with the tomatos! Home grown are the best! (I have 2 plants, both almost 6 ft. tall now!)
@f00l lol I have no idea. It must. I haven’t had a problem with them. lol
Seriously… I put 1/4" mesh wire on the bottom of my garden bed so that I wouldn’t have to worry about anything that burrows, but can still have worms and soil available to it. (I got the wood from a construction site. It only cost me what I paid for deck screws, the PVC, and the netting, and the plants, of course.)
I do have possums and raccoon back behind my yard that sometimes come up on my front porch and eat the cat food that I put out. So far, I haven’t had any problems with them or with the squirrels. (Believe it or not, I live about 2 miles as a crow flies from downtown Dallas). The netting seems to work well…but then I haven’t had a lot of veggies yet, either. Just a few tomatoes. I have squash, cucumber, eggplant, okra, and watermelon, too.
As soon as it quits raining, I’m going to finish a trellis that I’m building for the squash and cucumbers to grow on. Sorry… I know you didn’t ask about any of that, but I’m just so darned proud of my little garden! It beats using cat litter containers like I have been using in years past! lol
Like this?
/giphy I hate you strawberry bastards
@sammydog01 you show those strawberries!

That wall looks familiar- no sunflowers this year?
@sammydog01 Nope! Might plant a row in between the strawberries later.
@sammydog01 I was just thinking the same thing.
What’s in it for me if I do this for your strawberries?
@f00l Alleviation of guilt.
@DrunkCat
What specific guilt would that be? Description and mug shot would help.
I’m having trouble finding the guilt that wants alleviating. Is it wearing a gps or Bluetooth locator tag?

@f00l That was a scary inbox.

I blame you for how long it’s taking these people to decide whether or not to hire me.
Also, the current weather weirdness - not technically hot, but very humid, and always looking like it’s going to rain without actually raining.
Such teeny, tiny plants! It’s strawberry picking time in my neck of the woods. Your’s won’t be ready until next year.

Mostly just wanted to see what would come up. I like it; it shall be spared the delete.
@walarney /giphy, OTOH …

Never thought to grow strawberries even though the U pick 'em farm locally always has good luck with them.
@RiotDemon My squirrels would be thrilled.
/giphy happy squirrels
@sammydog01 I would bet anything that squirrel wasn’t happy.
@sammydog01 look at those happy squirrels flying through the air!
The squirrels already have a field day with all the acorns from my oak tree. I wonder if they’d eat everything else too.
@sammydog01 seriously though… That shit’s cruel. Just kill them outright or put down something that deters them.

Does that work on armadillos?

@Tadlem43
You have every right to be proud and excited.
Perhaps all you gardeners (there are quite a few of you) should get together and do a Summer 2017 gardening thread.
