I was actually looking up baby cameras earlier today on the google for baby #2. Aside from the fact that the base is huge and really oddly shaped, the monitor is audio only and you have to use an app for live video, which is a deal breaker for me.
@lichme why would it be a deal breaker? Do you plan to sit around and watch it the whole time they’re asleep? The point poof the live video so you can check in on them especially when they’re left with a babysitter and you’re at work and need a baby fix.
My girls are 9 and 12 with the oldest babysitting, I trust em but I still check in on them via house cams and they’re none the wiser, You can check on them without needing to always physically check.
If you want the feed playing in your room at night plug in your tablet and open live video, with this being Kodak they’re probably using the ISecurity+ app which also has web based browser to look at the cameras so you can have a laptop open to it.
@AiraCobra I get that, but most typical baby monitors auto turn the video feed off after a few minutes, while running the audio constantly, which I prefer. Tap a button, and your video feed is live. I’d rather be able to do that without lugging around two pieces of hardware or having to make another investment. If I were to go the IP cam route, there’s better options out there that would tie into my existing security cameras.
@bleedmichigan I will say that as the parent of three, I agree with you in commiseration. And yet neither of us would trade that Saturday night for the world…
I sometimes have to remind myself that those Saturday nights at home with the kids are the good old days I’ll look back on for the rest of my days once they finally fly the coop.
@shahnm I don’t disagree with you, as my kids have become tweens, I look back and almost miss those days. Then again I hated changing diapers, so maybe not.
@aleohansen OH MY GOD MAN!! TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!! HOLY CRAP PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET ON THIS RIGHT NOW BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!!! HAVE YOU NO SHAME?!? HAVE YOU NO DECENCY?!? WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?!?
@aleohansen you only THINK you have three months left to shop but you’ll blink Next week and next thing you know it’s June and the baby ready to charge on though
@aleohansen@seraphimcaduto Hint: you won’t need half (or more) of the stuff on that baby registry list for the first few months. Jammies, a car seat, burp cloths, diapers and wipes, that’s about it. Mom might need some stuff for nursing but all that is personal preference so she won’t know until she’s doing it.
@aleohansen@seraphimcaduto Unless you live in a mansion you will hear your baby crying. A monitor is a nice thing to have but don’t panic if you haven’t gotten one yet- your ears will tune in to the crying pretty quickly. My kid had one of those activity boards in her crib and I woke up in the middle of the night every night to the dulcet sounds of “Bingo” playing on my baby monitor. I hate that song to this day.
Is the camera trying to hide as a piece of furniture? Is this for an infant’s room, or for a millennial’s? I am not saying millennials are too stupid to know its a camera, but they would have to look up from their device.
@hchavers my girls are 9 and 12 and don’t even realize they’re are cameras around the house and don’t know I check in on them they think I trust them 100% I do but as someone once said “Trust But Verify” maybe one day they’ll notice that little black boxin the corner isn’t “The WiFi”
Einstein said if you want an example of time distortion,log on to meh right before midnight, and then, without fail, the next time you look, it will be 12:22 and you have no idea what happened.
@GeneralAnubis Cancel and go to Amazon there are better ones that allow for motion alerts such as climbing from cribs, video recordings, live video with two way mics so you can talk to them
Congrats btw mine are 9 and 12 I feel old but I’m onky 31
@AiraCobra Hah yep 30 here, we started late
This one has two-way voice, but yeah I guess it’s missing the motion detection. How much are the ones you’re talking about?
I got the normal (i.e. not a baby monitor) version last time it was on here. The video quality is better than I expected. Setup wasn’t too much hassle, and it’s kept working for quite a while. We got it so my wife can check on the parakeets while she’s at work or otherwise away, and she loves it.
@gominosensei it says “up to 30 fps,” but what is the frame rate actually like? Perusing some video baby monitors at the store made me sad because their frame rates were so choppy and slow.
@steelopus so you can use any of tends apps for any of their cameras. I tested this one and used their main app which has a pet highlight reel. Got to see what my pet was doing everyday while I was gone. Spoiler alert: lots of sleeping
The USB functionality means you can pair it with those security nightlights Meh sold last year. Plug it into the bottom of the nightlight, set the nightlight to motion setting, and you have a nice little motion-activated security camera setup.
If you are like my wife and I, you probably have a few old smartyphones sitting around. These work well as baby monitors as long as you can put them near a plug. Congrats to all the new and soon to be parents in this thread. August (Gus), our first daughter is almost 6 months old and my wife is still chewing up and spitting out nails as she has for the last yearish… I think all the hormones have made her teeth stronger. I’m slightly kidding.
Only 2 downsides to this that I can see, you can’t access it from your computer, and, to some degree, this thing is connected to the cloud of things, that people can hack into. Call me crazy, but I don’t want to enourage people to get into my stuff if I can help it.
It monitors baby shit? Does it have a shit gauge that beeps when the diaper is full? Does it say “Honey, it’s your turn, I got the last one”? I only want one that does that.

Picture this baby— true Kodak moment
Maybe if it was a baby monitor lizard.
(Idea: for the write-up next time this rolls around, weigh the pros and cons of owning a baby monitor vs owning a baby monitor lizard.)

@lichme We only had audio monitors when my kids were little and they survived. (Channeling my mother and her attitude toward car seats.)
@AiraCobra I get that, but most typical baby monitors auto turn the video feed off after a few minutes, while running the audio constantly, which I prefer. Tap a button, and your video feed is live. Plus, my wife said no, and she’s the boss.
Yeah I can understand why Meh is selling this, the birth rate has been on the decline so of to Meh the Babies R Us crap goes
Baby Making = Fun
Baby Monitoring = a sad Saturday night for a new parent
@bleedmichigan Sounds like you need some fun on Saturday night.
@bleedmichigan I will say that as the parent of three, I agree with you in commiseration. And yet neither of us would trade that Saturday night for the world…

Wife is 6 months pregnant with our first. Haven’t given monitors any thought yet…
@aleohansen, baby shower request. Seriously.
@aleohansen you only THINK you have three months left to shop but you’ll blink Next week and next thing you know it’s June and the baby ready to charge on though
@aleohansen Did our comments help? (OK @haydesigner did have a good suggestion.)
@aleohansen my wife is 7 months along with our first and this is kinda tempting.
@aleohansen @haydesigner @sammydog01 they certainly freaked me the hell out since I have less time than @aleohansen.
@aleohansen @seraphimcaduto Hint: you won’t need half (or more) of the stuff on that baby registry list for the first few months. Jammies, a car seat, burp cloths, diapers and wipes, that’s about it. @hchavers I’m not convinced of your postulation about what millennials do or do not, in fact, know.
@hchavers Yeah, those fake wood appliqués make it look like it has veneerial disease.
@hchavers @mehcuda67
/giphy I see what you did there
@hchavers
Blockquote
You won’t, but I will…they’re too stupid to know it’s a camera
Meh, you have a hyphen placement error in the specs. You say: “CFH-BVA10 (“Camera For Haughty Baby-Viewing Aficionados)”
However, as you can see, the hyphen is between the H and the B. Thus, your spec should read: Camera For Haughty-Baby Viewing Aficionados
Unfortunately, that severely limits your target market. Most of us do not like viewing haughty babies. That’s just not who we are, Meh.
@shahnm Get one for the parents of Haughty-Baby, but don’t explain the hyphen problem. It will be your little secret.
@hchavers Scandalous…
Einstein said if you want an example of time distortion,log on to meh right before midnight, and then, without fail, the next time you look, it will be 12:22 and you have no idea what happened.
@wew adjust time zones accordingly
@sparkyfarad @wew
Time zones are bizarre.
@wew Do you mean @einstein? I can’t find that he said anything here.
@einstein @sligett Did you check the archives? Back in the early days, he was a big fan of Two for Tuesdays.
Who owns the old “Kodak” name this week?
@radi0j0hn KimJongUn but Trump is gonna defraud him out of it when they meetin May
@AiraCobra @radi0j0hn You think Kim Jong Un has a “Kodak” name? Well Trump has an even BIGGER “Kodak” name!
@radi0j0hn Kodak has never been owned by any company other than Kodak. </proud_and_resilient_rochesterian>
Meh
This thing is WEAK!

Only about 4 months until we have our first kid - perfect timing Meh!

@GeneralAnubis Now that’s an appropriate order phrase!
@AiraCobra Hah yep 30 here, we started late
This one has two-way voice, but yeah I guess it’s missing the motion detection. How much are the ones you’re talking about?
@AiraCobra @GeneralAnubis I would
Be curious on some recommendations too… so much to filter through
@AiraCobra like…who wants a motion alert every time they switch thumbs or wave at the camera
@AiraCobra @bizzaregood @GeneralAnubis +1 to this, there are WAY too many choices
Does the 2-way audio work on the app or only on the patent unit?
@trailtroll Both the app and parent unit
I’ll use the bluetooth thermometer I bought earlier to monitor the baby. They can’t really pull it out until much older…

@jitc I haven’t noticed any choppiness. The birds don’t move around that quickly, though, so I might not be the best test user.
waiting on the Allen Funt limited edition
Good enough for pets? 180º is really attractive.
@steelopus so you can use any of tends apps for any of their cameras. I tested this one and used their main app which has a pet highlight reel. Got to see what my pet was doing everyday while I was gone. Spoiler alert: lots of sleeping
@mandirose That’s promising, thanks! I figure I could mount this up high in a corner and get a good full shot of the entire room.
@mandirose

@steelopus We use ours to check in on the pets during the day. It looks pretty good.
The USB functionality means you can pair it with those security nightlights Meh sold last year. Plug it into the bottom of the nightlight, set the nightlight to motion setting, and you have a nice little motion-activated security camera setup.
Going to give it a go… have twins on the way, so why not? 180 degrees should be enough to track two little boogers, right?
@NoGenocide congrats!
@NoGenocide get two of these, too.
I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
@sligett we hear that too often from our Google Home Mini. Not as frequently from Alexa, tho.
Baby to Marge! Baby to Marge! Wah! Wah! over

i’d rather invest in another raspberry pi and ps eye

@Sansoona you could do that with wireless moisture sensors.
However, child protective services might draw a line somewhere on minimizing real personal contact with your child.
@Sansoona Raspberry Pi + methane sensor. You’ll be golden. Maybe golden brown.
Baby monitor has stopped working. No warranty because item is now discontinued. Anything you can do for me?
@davemoffitt It came with a 90 day warranty…I can offer you thoughts and prayers in this difficult time.
