Kitchen Nightmares
7It’s a show by Gordon Ramsay I was watching some episodes and I saw a place I’d been to on one of the spinoffs called “Hotel Hell.” Needless to say I feel a little grossed out even if it was years ago.
I was curious if anyone here has ever been to a restaurant featured on Kitchen Nightmares?
What was your experience?

Nope, but been to a couple of different joints that have appeared on “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.” And they’ve both been seriously disappointing.
Also been to one place that was on “Restaurant Impossible” a few months earlier and the nicest thing I can say is, “they regressed quickly.”
@TrophyHusband there’s a BBQ joint near my company’s shop in China Grove that features memorabilia from DDD on the way in the door. It scared me for a moment but the place is actually legit good and I try to go every time I’m down there. Love me some pecan cobbler after a plate of their brisket and ribs.
@TrophyHusband A restaurant in my town was on DDD. A waterside bar that had no kitchen, just a steamer and a microwave. They installed a TV and a streamed a clip of the segment every minute they were open. This was not only the worst restaurant in my town, I was convinced it was the worst restaurant I’ve ever eaten in for my 57 yrs.
@djslack There’s no reason to place any prerequisite on pecan cobbler: It’s great anytime!
What’s the name of said joint? I’ll be passing near China Grove in a couple of weeks and brisket’s always welcome in my belly!
@TrophyHusband it’s Texas Pride BBQ. Enjoy it!

DDD shot an episode at The Sink in Boulder CO. They do have some good food and they are a 95+ yr institution on the hill.
(You can ask @kyeh to confirm)
@djslack @TrophyHusband Pecan cobbler? Just downloaded a recipe. Thanks for the inspiration!
@TrophyHusband
Been to Cutty’s, super food. If you are in the area when they do one, Super Cluckin’ Sunday is an experience.

never heard of it either!
looking up recipes now…
@chienfou @djslack @TrophyHusband The Sink does have decent food, although it’s really more interesting for its history and eccentric “decor” - the walls are covered with graffiti style cartoons and some actual graffiti, including an autograph from Pres. Obama who visited in 2012; Robert Redford worked there as a janitor in the 50s. Four other restaurants in town were featured on DD&D; one I think is just okay, two I haven’t tried, and the one I really like is a Thai place that deserves the recognition, but dammit, the wait to get served doubled or tripled after GF made it famous, and I think the food even got slightly less good!
@Kyeh
Back in the 70’s there used to be a FANTASTIC Mexican restaurant that was in an old converted gas station… the kind with big windows all around the front. People used to line up outside to get one of the few tables inside. You’d just hang out in the parking lot and wait to get inside. Still remember seeing a TV in the kitchen area tuned to some Hispanic channel showing Star Trek dubbed in Spanish in the middle of the afternoon. Good times!!
@chienfou Oh, yeah!!! I hadn’t thought about that place for eons. Way out on the north end of town. The waitresses were surly as hell, they’d slam the dishes down and snap at you “Plate’s hot!” But the food really was great. One place that’s still around that you might have been in is that Village Coffee Shop across from McGuckin’s, aka the best hardware store in the region. VCS used to be a total greasy spoon but I’ve heard that the food is better now; I don’t like breakfast much so I haven’t tried it.
@Kyeh
Si… fue muy bueno!
After every episode of kitchen nightmares I’d watch, the first thing I’d do is Google if they were still in business. Usually they weren’t.
I’ve been to a restaurant that said they were on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives… But it wasn’t actually. It was a sister location in a completely different state. The show talked about how each location is unique with special items on the menu. It was a breakfast place that was overpriced and overcrowded. The food wasn’t that great. I think they shut down during the pandemic, and they might of closed for good because I can’t even find them on the map anymore.
@RiotDemon LOL! That’s exactly what my wife does! Usually while we are watching the episode!
@RiotDemon @TrophyHusband Yup the place I went to is closed on Yelp so I guess that is that.
I’ve had pretty good experiences with the 10-12 DDD restaurants I’ve tried (back when I did a little more traveling). YMMV
