Careful. That 16° edge means your sharpener probably won’t sharpen to the same angle, so you’ll either need to sharpen by hand or get a special sharpener if you want to keep that angle. Most sharpeners are 20° or 25°.
@djslack Had almost the same thought (actually I thought “16°?! They’re maniacs!”). Also, there will probably some loss of durability, requiring more frequent sharpening.
@mehcuda67 I can’t speak to these knives, but my Shun set gets sharpened about once a year. No steeling required. My Henckels “S” needed steeling with every use and sharpening every 3 months. Assuming the steel is hard enough for a 16° edge it should hold up pretty well with proper care.
@cengland0 I believe it is this from the description above:
"Traditional Japanese hammered finish helps release food more easily"
so it appears to not be smooth but hammered. I would prefer smooth for easy wiping rather than scrubbing the hammered indentations.
KAI is the parent company of Shun.
KAI also makes razor blades, scissors, tweezers and such. KAI also owns Kershaw knives and Zero Tolerance knives as part of KAI-USA in the Portland Oregon area.
It’s a good thing these showed up on meh, otherwise I would have had to buy them on morningsave. (Seriously, please stop putting morningsave crap on meh. You can put meh stuff on that site, but not the other way.)
A Kai Luna 6 piece knife set at Williams Sonoma which is totally not this knife set sells for $79 which would make this deal great if it were the same knife set. So I bought it.

Oops, domain doesn’t work any longer.
kai who?
@mcemanuel Kai, the parent company of Shun, Kershaw, and Zero Tolerance knives.
cut me some slack…
Meh sells knives and water is wet. Oh, and the knives are wet too.
@lljk Mehbe they plan to sell sharp water tomorrow.
@lljk Well, they’re sharpened on a whetstone, of course they’re whet.
For me, it has to be at least 50% off of Amazon’s prices. Pass
You know, you actually only need three knives: a chef knife, a pairing knife, and a long serrated knife. This set has three knives too many. I’m out.
@phatmass
How many knives one needs depends on usage.
For instance, does one need a tactical knife?
A hunting and fishing knife?
A pocket knife?
A knife for extreme sports and travel?
Or does one really really need an amazing collection of expensive unused and barely-used knives so that one can stand around admiring them?
@f00l I admire mine while sitting, thank you very much.
@phatmass and a boning knife. And possibly a filet knife, although you could use the boning knife for that if you had to. Or vice versa.
And a long carving knife.
While those three are the essential ones, there are other knives that provide value in the kitchen.
@f00l Yeah, or sometimes one of the knives will get dull, and then you have to bury it in the knife graveyard in the wall and get a new one.
@craigthom I don’t use a knife when I do all of my boning. Kinda ruins the mood.
@InnocuousFarmer
I don’t shun Shuns.
well, I guess I could do a Samurai clown outfit for Halloween this year… these’d work, yeah?
Careful. That 16° edge means your sharpener probably won’t sharpen to the same angle, so you’ll either need to sharpen by hand or get a special sharpener if you want to keep that angle. Most sharpeners are 20° or 25°.

Do the blades just look wet but they are totally smooth or are they as bumpy as they look?
@cengland0 the blades are stamp-forged with the pattern embossed into the steel, then polished.
@alacrity Can you feel that pattern or is it smooth?
@cengland0 They’re bumpy. You can feel it. They say it aids with food release.
@cengland0 I believe it is this from the description above:
"Traditional Japanese hammered finish helps release food more easily"
so it appears to not be smooth but hammered. I would prefer smooth for easy wiping rather than scrubbing the hammered indentations.
@djslack Dang, that’s a deal breaker. Anyway, I doubt they would replace my 4 star Henckels so I’d be out for that reason too.
@sparkyfarad Getting hammered helps me release food more easily…
lol at the amazon link actually being cheaper than meh today. The amazon link right now is for a the 3 most useful knifes for only $25
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EE5NR84/
@Starwind They state that in the price comparison so they are aware. You have to then add the costs of the other three because you get 6 knives total.
The Amazon reviews are almost all for Shun brand knives. Something is strange there.
@cire5671 It’s not all that strange given the way Amazon groups reviews for different items (and Kai makes Shun).
You have to change the filter to just these knives for the reviews to be useful.
I have never before now thought of a kitchen knife as an ugly thing. These are the most ghastly knives I have ever seen. No thanks.
CSI finds these suckers in the kitchen and it’s curtains for the surviving spouse!
KAI is the parent company of Shun.

@fateone They also run the Cobra Kai dojo.
@SpocKirk Oh! I hate those guys!
With 0.5% carbon, this steel is way too soft to hold a 16 degree (inclusive) edge, even with a good heat treat. It needs VG-10 or something similar.
I may have missed the comment, but Amazon sells this exact same set for 79.99. Kai Luna Essential Knife Set with Sheath, Silver (6) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073DTTZH2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ml8UzbAJH7A96
you can never have too many knives… then again you can’t sharpen serrated so one is more than enough
Why can’t you sharpen serrated blades?
German stainless steel… made in China… only in America…
It’s a good thing these showed up on meh, otherwise I would have had to buy them on morningsave. (Seriously, please stop putting morningsave crap on meh. You can put meh stuff on that site, but not the other way.)
I still have two sets of Jaimie Oliver knives in boxes.
A Kai Luna 6 piece knife set at Williams Sonoma which is totally not this knife set sells for $79 which would make this deal great if it were the same knife set. So I bought it.
@KillSw1tch That totally makes sense. Enjoy your knives!
Soft grip handles… Meh
Not full tang knives. pffft.
