@heartny I just bought a new neck fan that they say is “blade less” so you don’t have to worry about long hair getting tangled. It has paddles like old fashioned paddle boats, so I think long haired folks still need to be careful.
Hard pass. The last time I listened to a podcast during chores at the usual 3x speed my housemate looked at me like I was an insane person. I need headphones
@taneplapeorb if that’s the only reason people look at you that way, you should probably get headphones, because you’re just not hearing the beat of your own different drummer
@werehatrack I’m going to join this biker gang. I’m thinking just enough volume to enjoy tunes but not too much that you miss that large truck approaching.
@pixelated have you ever used one? The speakers are plenty powerful for listening to podcasts, books and music. Much better, louder and clearer than phone speakers.
@KSHC i’ve bought one at Amazon and returned it. Didn’t like how it sounded. Got the Bose and the JBL ones instead…though I didn’t keep those two as well. Gave them both as gifts to my sister and to my niece.
These types of neck gadgets aren’t for me.
I’d rather use regular on-ear headphones
Have 2 of these and love them. Earbuds hurt and headphones annoy so I was thrilled when I discovered these. Can walk around the house doing chores listening to books and podcasts, and answering the phone that I forgot where it is again. Volume isn’t an issue since I’m always the one yelling turn it down. Better than a speaker for privacy and mobility.
Got one of these from a IRK and was great for phone calls while driving. Much safer than headphone, much easier to hear than my phone in a holder on the dash. Only issue is that the mic location meant that when I turned my head to check cross traffic I would cut out a little.
I own one of these and it’s one of the greatest pieces of technology I’ve ever had. I wear it to listen to music while I’m running. I wear it to talk on the phone while I’m driving. The sound is clear and it’s so comfortable that I often forget that I have it on. Great product. Great price.
@bryane just curious - for someone else or why would you want two?
I think my wife would like this, but I don’t think that I would find much use for it personally. The dishes thing… that really does seem to be the perfect use… so I guess I would use it some.
@kerriann4wine not sure hat you mean but I’m 5’4 and love it. They rest where your shoulder and neck meet. I don’t usually like anything hanging from my neck due to cervical stenosis but these don’t bother me at all.
I was excited to see this at first, my husband has mention wanting something similar. However I think he was leaning more towards a bone conduction style, whereas this looks to be more of a bluetooth speaker.
Does anyone have more perspective, or information regarding these versus say, the aftershokz? Any specific pointers, or recommends for the bone conduction style headphones? Thanks!
So this is the modern solution to the antiquated boombox on the shoulder? I cannot think how this could possibly be better than buds or cans in any scenario.
@goldnectar I used to use it while working in a place that didn’t allow headphones for safety reasons, but these allow you to hear around you and hear your podcast. The last one sold was a different model though, so unsure if these are as good.
@goldnectar On a bike, in Texas, where a cyclist is subject to the exact same prohibition on both-sides earbuds as a car or truck driver, this seems like it might provide a useful alternative.
@goldnectar@werehatrack I was thinking even while driving as long as it’s not turned up too loud. I listen to audiobooks on long trips and my passengers don’t.
As noted, but very much worth repeating: there are many situations where and many reasons why you need/want to be able to hear ambient sounds, even as you listen to your tunes or your podcasts or your books or whatever. Neither buds nor cans meets that need. They definitely obstruct ambient sounds–even the fancy ones with pass-through.
Somewhat like @sammydog01, I don’t like sticking things in my ears (ironically, I put up with ear plugs, but I actually don’t like those either), especially things that are plastic and/or metallic. I’ve tried all kinds of ear buds, including some super expensive ones. Granted, I haven’t invested in those fitted ones the musicians use, because I can’t quite justify the expense.
Likewise, headphones are also a pain–literally. They push against the outside of my ear, they push against the top of my head, they pull on my hair. I kinda really don’t care if anyone else gets that or thinks I’m sensitive or weak. They’re fucking uncomfortable.
As much as I can appreciate the boom box, one, it’s usually (at least for my applications) intrusive and rude and it absolutely isn’t as portable or carefree. I’m a fan of Radio Raheem. I don’t want his burden.
AfterShokz are pretty much the best, imo, but they’re goddamned pricey. We finally broke down and got a couple pairs because earbuds and headphones simply don’t work for my wife and while I don’t have quite the valid reasons she does, she insisted. They’re awesome, but as expensive as they are, they make me nervous (i.e., I don’t want to lose or damage them). And they aren’t 100% comfortable all of the time. They’re way better than earbuds and headphones (unless you want to explicitly block out or actively cancel the noise; though they can actually be worn with ear plugs, since they use conduction technology, but cancellation headphones or buds work better, from what I can tell). Anyway, the neckband is a good cheap option.
Even if I’m alone and could crank any of numerous speakers, it’s great to be able to effortlessly carry the sound with me and not keep switching or not needlessly fill the whole house (sometimes a great idea, but not if my alone just applies to the room I’m in).
I’ve tolerated (and still do) earbuds and headphones, because I appreciate their function. But the reality is that the side effects limit how much I can use them. The neckband gives me another option that 1) from my perspective, is more comfortable (there are still ways it can be uncomfortable, but I don’t find them as much of an issue and, if nothing else, they allow the parts of my head that are irritated by buds and cans to recover, even, yeah, heal) and 2) provides an additional benefit I sometimes want or need.
On JVC’s website the first thing you see is beware of counterfeits… It’s bad enough filtering out the fake reviews, so what are the chances that this product is fake as well?
@billgior@sammydog01 Honestly this site has been more ‘accurate’ about products and reviews than the “big A” site which will post (almost) anything some unknown 3rd-party seller wants to say about a product, and the bogus reviews are rampant especially on those products.
Here the mistakes really seem unintentional (or at least they’re good at making them LOOK unintentional). Like this week’s wall charger that was with cable and then later on was not with cable.
I received this last week, and within three hours of using, the right speaker stopped working.
Called JVC warranty, and they wanted me to pay to ship it to them, and then pay return shipping as well. At current shipping prices, it would have been as much as I paid for it to begin with (or more)!
Thankfully, Meh stepped up and refunded my order. And that is how you make loyal customers. (Especially VMP ones )

Contrary to popular belief, this cannot replace a tie for formal gatherings.
@guybrush01 But…but…its black. Black tie event?
@guybrush01 You go to the wrong kind of formal gatherings.
@guybrush01 But it can be used as a boomerang (and I said that before seeing the last picture!). Great minds and all that…
@guybrush01 I bet you could slide an awfully snazzy looking sleeve over them tho
@eeterrific @guybrush01 Slide a camo sleeve over em and no one will see em
@guybrush01 Is that a challenge?
@guybrush01 made me think of this
Speaker dock for your neck?
When you want to annoy everyone around you but also have your hands free.
@Dynamik Perfect for crazies on public transit!
The actual activities that those hands are left free for is left to your imagination.
Oh I thought the notification said “neckbeard speaker”.
At least the guy in the last photo had the right idea….
Hey, my ears are up here.
Bummer, I thought it was one of those new fangled neck fans. Coulda used one during the heat wave.
@heartny You could still chill it in the freezer. If anyone asks, tell them you were told it was good for the batteries.
@heartny Like the Dyson neck fan with no fan blade
@heartny I just bought a new neck fan that they say is “blade less” so you don’t have to worry about long hair getting tangled. It has paddles like old fashioned paddle boats, so I think long haired folks still need to be careful.
@dahobbs9 @heartny Give me 10 minutes with a Dyson and a screwdriver, and you’ll see how well they work without a fan blade.
Lots of happy customers last time this came up…

Oops, that was a different model number.
@Euniceandrich Thanks for the link. Looks like they tossed in a bluetooth adapter and raised the price.

No FM?

I wonder if this would be useful while riding a bike…
@werehatrack I second that.
@werehatrack As long as you ride within 30ft of your bike, sure
@werehatrack I’m going to join this biker gang. I’m thinking just enough volume to enjoy tunes but not too much that you miss that large truck approaching.
It’s a Bluetooth speaker! It’s Bluetooth headphones! It’s a Bluetooth speaker! It’s Bluetooth headphones!
Now now you two. It’s both a Bluetooth speaker AND Bluetooth headphones.

Bone Fone anyone?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_Fone
What is Meh doing selling a JVC branded product? I anticipate a lawsuit for stolen goods.
When the seller says it’s a moving sale, you must know the trailer was stationary long enough.
Do buyers have to pass a common sense “is this irritating in a public space?” test to purchase these?
If you need to cheat, the answer is yes, it’s irritating in a public space.
I have one from a previous sale. These are perfect for driving directions.
This neck speaker’s sound is too weak for you to listen to podcasts, but loud enough for everyone else around you to be annoyed.
Your phone has better speakers than this.
@pixelated have you ever used one? The speakers are plenty powerful for listening to podcasts, books and music. Much better, louder and clearer than phone speakers.

Bought one last time - I’m very happy with it. Considering another…
@bryane just curious - for someone else or why would you want two?
I think my wife would like this, but I don’t think that I would find much use for it personally. The dishes thing… that really does seem to be the perfect use… so I guess I would use it some.
@mehvid1 One to leave in the home office, one to stay in my backpack … and one to rule them all!
@bryane @mehvid1 Don’t do it…You’ll be expected to do the dishes!
@bryane @Kyser_Soze Great advice! Unfortunately I think I’ve “expected” myself into that role a bit too much already.
Would this be comfortable for a person with a smaller frame? I’m concerned this might not fit me as well as it would someone larger.
@kerriann4wine not sure hat you mean but I’m 5’4 and love it. They rest where your shoulder and neck meet. I don’t usually like anything hanging from my neck due to cervical stenosis but these don’t bother me at all.

If you can’t use a speaker while you’re doing the dishes, I think you’re doing the dishes wrong.
While you listen to music on this speaker, does everyone around you hear it as well?
@lucythechef yes. Do not use this in the subway or in a cubicle at work. Everyone would hear it.
I just came here to complain about the RED text and the RED button, which are killing my eyes (not to mention v un-accessiblity-friendly) ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I was sorry I missed this last time. Not going to miss it this time. If it’s good enough for @joelmw it’s good enough for me.

@Kyeh @OldCatLady @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 Already a bit too much ‘hose’ goin’ on there.
@sammydog01 Anybody remember the episode of Seinfeld where George had “shrinkage”? Myth busted!
So this is the modern solution to the antiquated boombox on the shoulder? I cannot think how this could possibly be better than buds or cans in any scenario.
@goldnectar I hate earbuds with a passion and dislike headphones a bit less. Maybe I’m just a weirdo.

@goldnectar @pmarin @sammydog01 I still have my 80’s boombox and wish they still made quality boomboxes. Everything made now is crap.

@billgior Close to zero. Just ask the Quip toothbrush people.
