Just got my two weeks
14This email was sent yesterday, which i received this morning when i came into the office:
Hi <chacham>~
<Manager> reached out this morning to let me know that due to lack of work, they will have to release you and your last day will be Friday, July 22nd.
Please update your resume and l’ll work with <her manager> to see what other positions we have for you here at <place of work>.
Please forward the updated resume to myself and <her manager>. ><her email address>
Truthfully, i’m surprised it took so long. The latest issue was i clashed with the DA and she got insulted. I usually do their work for them so i can do it correctly, from the beginning, which is pretty much what i was asked to do. This is the first time i met someone who felt insulted by that. Oh well.
Unemployment max, iirc, is $362 every two weeks, which just misses covering the rent, so i seriously to cut costs now. VMP is extra, but it’s only $5 and
/giphy a lot of fun.
My VMP renews on the 20th, 2 days before my last day, so i will likely not renew it, since i can’t justify buying new items anyway. Even though i’d buy a fuko today if i had the chance. Oh well.
Why am i telling all this to you?

I hope you find another position soon!
@katylava Thank you.
I wonder if i ought to take a little time to enjoy summer first. I have not been on my bike anywhere near enough yet.
@chacham sorry this happened to you – I’ve been unemployed since December 2 last year and being unemployed is tough!! I am older so most don’t even reply to my application for employment at their offices. I just cashed in my last jobs 401 k, which I didn’t want to do, but you do what you must do to survive! #tooyoungtoretire #toooldformosttohire Hang in there though - it will all work out though as something better is out there for you !!
@AttyVette Ouch. Age discrimination is real. Somewhat understandable, but definitely unfortunate. Thank you for the note, and i hope you get something soon.
@chacham somewhat understandable? I
representresent that remark!good luck in the hunt for work!
/giphy just the right job
@Yoda_Daenerys Well, hiring older people can be fraught with issues, making it understandable. It does not make it right, and that is why there are laws against it.
To be clear, by “understandable,” i do not mean that i wish it could be done, or even sympathize with people who practice such discrimination. I just think i understand their position, and still choose to reject it.
@AttyVette for what it’s worth it’s probably not your age. When I was searching most places didn’t bother to reply to me either, same goes for most people I’ve talked unemployment with. Shitty world, huh?
@AttyVette I’m an old fuck too and am doing some temping until something better comes along. You should think about doing some temp work.
Sending warm fuzzies your way, @chacham… Whatever happens, I wish you the very best!
I hope your next work experience is relatively free of assholes and pricklies.
So basically lack of work is a fabrication?
Sorry to hear about your impending dismissal, @chacham.
@jbartus
I haven’t had much work in a while. The previous manager knew me and hired me, and had me fix things. New manager is a nice guy, but sitting on a different floor. Whatever.
The PMs don’t seem to care about anything other than being part of the machinery. I’m at a disadvantage because i do.
@chacham Sorry to hear that. I wish you better luck in your next role!
What kind of world do we live in where your manager can’t fire you in person, hell, they can’t even have the balls do to the firing themselves, so they have someone else do it for them? Maybe it bothers me more than it should but damn.
@Collin1000 the same kind of world where my friends husband tells her he’s filing for divorce and has already been seeing someone else for months, via Txt msg.
oh btw, she(my friend) was a couple months pregnant at the time…
@Collin1000 Well, that much is understandable. I am not an employee, i am a contractor. Therefore, all employment related stuff must come through my actual employer.
I believe it stems from the one case where a bunch of contractors sued Microsoft for being employees, just not in name, and sued for benefits and won. Since then, companies are super careful with contractors.
The world we live in a poor excuse. But, we made it for ourselves.
They do not know your qualifications already? The email is just wrong, I agree with Collin1000. Seems like they should know if there are other positions are available and be able to offer them if they wished. Maybe this is a big place or the way it works and I am not being realistic?
Good luck, take some time if you can afford it. I have in the past and never regretted it.
@speediedelivery Yeah, its a large company. Funnily enough, iiuc, there’s an employment fair soon enough. Who knows, maybe i can be hired by the company itself!
Sorry to hear this @chacham!
Sorry to hear this. Hopefully, they are serious about the possibility of another position within in the company.
Very sorry to hear, @chacham. Here’s hoping better opportunities come out of this.
I’m so sorry @chacham. You deserve better than a Dear John email. I hope you find a new place to work, where they appreciate your efforts, talent, and the fact that you care.
@Thumperchick That’s the dilemma. Small places care more, large places have more security. I prefer the small.
five years from now you will be in a much better place than today, and today will be a distant vague memory
i am 12 years ahead of you in this cycle, live well
I was a human resources manager in my past life. I think your manager is heartless to do this sort of thing via a message (by the way grammatically incorrect - “myself and <her manager>. ><her email address>” rather than ME. Oh well, my age is showing. Try to enjoy the lessening of pressure if that is possible or at least fake it. I do hope you find yourself in a much better situation with more money! Good luck.
@Klozitshopper <Manager> is actually a nice guy, and i believe prevented by the rules from talking to me directly about employment.
The person who sent the email, yeah, that was kind of tacky. I believe she mostly works in the building across the street as a site rep anyway, it would have been at a most a 10 minute excursion to meet me in person. As for heartless, i might have agreed to that for other reasons. She’s probably just a piece of corporate machinery.
There’s a slight chance i may come back to the company as an actual employee though, i have a contact to speak to tomorrow. If that works out, i’ll be happy this happened.
Good luck with the next steps. Keeping my fingers crossed that you end up in a position that you like and where your skill set is appreciated!
