Anova is having a father’s day sale on their precision cookers with $40 off until June 11. The neat thing is if you go to their page at https://anovaculinary.com/store/ but don’t add it to your cart, a chat window will pop up offering more savings. Chat with one of their friendly reps and you can get a code for $10 more off, bringing the price down to $99 for Bluetooth and $149 for wifi models. You may also get a free GIF in chat; I did but YMMV.
@tightwad
Check the threads on slickdeals.net about this. Or search slickdeals for “sous vide”. Of just google “sous vide”.
There are a number of remarks about how great they are. There is a slight learning curve, not that they are hard to use, but what kinds of cooking you used to do another way, and now might with one of these.
The people who use them seem to quickly become fanatic fans.
Amazon has “Dredd” in 3D/Bluray/digital for $3.74: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B005LAII80/. The only catch is that right now it’s listed as an add-on item.
GOG.com has their Summer Sale going on now for 2 weeks.
Get a free game with your first purchase (Rebel Galaxy), additional titles have been added to GOG Connect (select titles on your Steam account are auto-added to your GOG account for free), and 1500+ titles with super-steep discounts. https://www.gog.com/news/set_off_for_the_adventurous_summer_sale_on_gogcom
@dashcloud Was going to post this. Just got a discount on Obduction (new title from the Myst team) and I got the Rebel Galaxy for free. Which is only 5.99 on its own right now.
@sammydog01 Looking like these are items marked “clearance” but not discounted. Old merchandising ploy. Put a red tag on it, call it clearance, generate buzz.
@ruouttaurmind I got an email from Harmon Kardon yesterday. They had a portable speaker for $150 with a list price of $500. When I looked around I found it was more like $90 and the reviews had a list price of more like $200. Lying bastards.
/giphy lying bastards
@sammydog01 Reminds me of when a department or discount store closes down a location and they hire a company to come in and liquidate all the merch. Everything gets marked up, then discounted back to normal retail price.
I noticed this when Kmart was closing a bunch of stores a few years ago. I saw a air compressor I wanted (on “clearance” for $90). But the identical SKU was on sale in the non-closing stores for $69.
I understand marketing tactics are important tools for a retailer, but don’t freakin’ lie to me, and don’t insult my intelligence!
My local Best Buy price matched Amazon’s price for the Motorola Moto G5 Plus version with offers and adds for a standard version. If you are not familiar with Amazon’s offers and ads on devices, it’s like this . . . They sell you a device (Kindle or phone or tablet) at a discounted price but the device will show ads when it goes into screen saver mode. No big deal with the Kindle but not something I want on a phone. Of course you can buy a stock version of the phone for retail at amazon too.
For the 64GB/4GB RAM version of the phone (the one I bought) the price difference with offers and ads, versus without (that is, the standard, OEM version) is $60! YMMV. It all depends on your local BB store.
I should also note that the with offers and ads version of the phone will only appear if you are a Prime member and logged in.
FYI, The Moto G5 Plus is getting rave reviews as the best budget Android phone available.
Publix has Raincoast Crisps, 5 different varieties, on clearance for $3.-$4.50. Amazon has those varieties at $6.50- $15.79. It’s an artisan cracker that was featured on Oprah’s O List and in Martha Stewart Living. I’ve just loaded up on them- these are crackers for grownups.
@OldCatLady They certainly offer some unusual flavours, innit. Fig and olive, rosemary raisin pecan, cranberry hazelnut, salty date pecan, apricot fig and lemon.
Too bad they don’t offer a sampler box. I’d be in to give them all a try, but I’m not tryin to spend $15 a box on Amz to find out if I like them. If I don’t like them, I’ve wasted $15 a box. If I do like them I’ve developed a $15/box cracker habit!
EDIT: Turns out Whole Foods and Kroger/Fry’s in my area carry them. I’ll go look 'em up on the way home today.
@ruouttaurmind Hope they’re on clearance there, too. The fig & olive are wonderful, and they’re the sort of thing to eat with different cheeses. Their website even lists suggested cheeses, meats, wines, and beers for each variety.
@OldCatLady Stopped on the way home, excited to try some of these crackas. I had no trouble locating them in the store, but was disappointed to discover they only carry the plain or oat plain. I wasn’t trying to spend a buck and a half per oz for plain crackas.
@Barney They play mostly-uncensored audio from that day at the 9/11 Museum in NYC, from air traffic control and EMS response. (If you search, you can find it free online too, since it was all released publicly as part of the investigation a few years later.) This apparently is completely uncensored audio, so know what you’re getting into in terms of emotional load.
If you feel you can handle it, I absolutely recommend the museum. I went last month and it is a very thorough, thoughtful presentation of that day and its impact.
Free delivery in Prime Now service areas (with $20 min order). YMMV.
I placed a $21 order, then used promotional code 10PRIMENOW for a $10 discount. I just purchased about $45 worth of goods for eleven bucks! And free delivery!
Local Kohl’s has Ninja Master Prep blender and chopper on sale for 29 99 (it’s 39.99 on the website). Had a 30% off coupon for Kohl’s, so I got this unit for $21.
@moondrake I have a version of that. It came with another slightly smaller blender jar. Works alright. Don’t recommend trying to make nut butters in it unless you take lots of breaks. If you run the machine for more than a minute straight, you can smell the motor brushes. It actually says in the manual to pulse it for smoothies and stuff, not letting it run for over 45 seconds I think.
If making something with ice, put just the ice first and grind it into snow before making the smoothie unless you want chunks of ice in it.
@RiotDemon thanks. I’ve been using a regular old-fashioned Oster blender for years. I don’t imagine I’m going to do much in this other than make smoothies, so the advice on the ice will be very useful.
I know I posted one Anova deal to start this thread, but here’s another: the new Anova Nano has been announced as the first Anova device under $100, with multi cooker control (I hope this feature comes to existing cookers).
MSRP $99, preorder until 6/15 for $89 at https://anovaculinary.com/nano/ for October delivery. They have a graph that shows the cutoff for Oct/Nov delivery on that page.
Dunno anything about this camera, but it’s a 720p wifi camera with night vision and, pan and tilt, and 2-way audio for twenty bucks with free shipping. How bad could it be?
If you just want a camera to check and make sure the garage door is closed or whatever… maybe this is the answer?
I hope this is legit. Honorably discharged veterans can register (now) to shop online at all online exchanges; opens 11 Nov. https://www.vetverify.org/
Amazon has released the Dash Wand, a new Alexa-enabled device that can help you scan grocery barcodes, convert measurements and order household essentials from Amazon just by using your voice. You need to be Prime subscriber to purchase the Dash Wand for $20, but you get $20 off your next purchase after you register the device. If you select slow shipping you get a $5 Prime Pantry credit.
@f00l I am hoping it won’t be kitchen focused, since I don’t cook and rarely eat at home. It says it has thousands of Alexa skills, so I think maybe it’s like a mini-Alexa Echo Dot.
Just as I went to post an Amazon lightening deal for a TP-LINK AC1200 Gigabit Wireless Router for $7 (that’s right, SEVEN American dollars), the deal vanished. Sad Trombone

Cheap KCups in a bunch of flavors and varieties. I ordered some pumpkin spice ones for a friend and the final cost for 48 cups was $19.80 shipped. Enter coupon codes BRADSKCUPS6 and BRADFREE during checkout.
@moondrake $0.41 per cup isn’t a wonderful deal, but far better than the original ask price ($0.57/cup).
I regularly buy mine on Amazon which is 100 for $35.00. You can save a few pennies with subscribe and save as well, but my coffee drinking is too erratic to predict regular shipments of the stuff.
@ACraigL Do you make sure to select no-rush shipping so you get $1. credit in the music or Kindle store? Even if they consolidate shipments into one box, you get a separate credit for each order.
@CaptAmehrican Thanks, got 5 pairs pants, 4 jackets, a pair of shorts, a warm vest, and 2 misc items for $55. Good stuff for walking the dogs when winter comes.
-a cooling mattress pad
-a memory foam pet bed (surely your pet sleeps on the best spot on your bed but perhaps you could use the pet bed for yourself, while your pet sleeps on your bed)
-exercise equipment
@OldCatLady, this includes a new Anne Hillermand Leaphorn and Chee mystery.
Also includes I Am Malala, the hilarious Disrupted, the recent Bonhoeffer bio, and a number of other well-known NYT bestsellers.
@OldCatLady
I’ve been in love with these since childhood. Thx so much.
Even if some of them might be quite dated in attitude, and even if the monocle, cute and clever to a degree, was close to being “too much” even back then.
Just going on memory, my favs might be The Nine Tailors Murder Must Advertise
And for sheer fun Five Red Herrings
Gaudy Night and Strong Poison are vivid in memory also.
These should be read in chronological order, for anyone who does not know the series.
@OldCatLady, you know that Jill Paton Walsh has continued the series with approval from the Sayers estate, don’t you?
These are quite decent IMHO.
4 new books so far, I haven’t read the last one yet.
$15 off a $30 purchase at https://greatergood.com with coupon code treat15. This website supports a variety of nonprofits, including animal rescue. According to their website they have donated over $45 million to charity. I’ve been pleased with my purchases there. Plan to do some shopping later.

There are various bluetooth and non-bluetoothe models (the bt ones can be monitored on your phone)
I don’t know how amazon’s pricing compares to Anova’s.
@f00l Amazon generally matches Anova pricing, however the bonus $10 off is not available through Amazon.
@tightwad create the perfect steaks, every-time is all
How about good deals that I missed? MorningSave had LG TONE Active HBS-850 Bluetooth Stereo Headset for $20., and they’re sold out.
@OldCatLady I saw that, too. I have an older set of LG Tones that are really quite nice. That Morningsave sale was a good deal.
@OldCatLady
@dsljack
I totally would have bought these.

Anyone else notice there is a clearance section on morningsave?
@mikibell Linky linky. https://morningsave.com/market/clearance
@mikibell No I didn’t! Zhip phone stands and Robosmasherz too! Although it doesn’t really look clearance priced.
@sammydog01 Looking like these are items marked “clearance” but not discounted. Old merchandising ploy. Put a red tag on it, call it clearance, generate buzz.
@ruouttaurmind @sammydog01 i checked the stalker for a few…they are cheaper than sold before minus 10% with vmp…
@mikibell ZHIP phone stands were $5 for 3 on Meh, $4 for 2 on clearance at MS

@huja really? Swill perhaps, but I’ll bet the odds of identity theft are a lot lower with NSA & Google.
@RedOak Probably.

Sale on SanDisk Memory card/ hard drive/ flash drives (OTG and WI-FI (they create secure hotspots)).
And yes, the OTGs have type-c compatibility.
Really tempted to buy a 32GB OTG since I can’t use my other OTG (unless I want to use an adapter).
Then again, I have external access set up on my Pi, so I’m able to access it anywhere…
And considering that the 64GB model is only $0.71 more than the 32GB model…
Which seems more practical?
64GB Type-C USB OTG for $21.59, or 128GB Type-C USB OTG for $33.66?
@PlacidPenguin
Ehh.
Went for the 128GB just cause. Although with tax it came out to $36.48.
@PlacidPenguin
Big is good. Considering …
@f00l
Considering what?
Just cancelled the order.
Acknowledged that I didn’t need it anyways.
@PlacidPenguin Unable to keep logic and reason from rearing their sensible but boring heads? Well, I’m sure you made the wiser choice in the end.
@ruouttaurmind
Logic and reason were arguing both sides at the same time, thus leaving me perplexed as to what I was drinking.
@PlacidPenguin
Considering we’re discussing storage.
Not discussing some topic where “small” might be considered good.
@f00l
When would small be good?
@PlacidPenguin
When it is useful that desirable molecule should pass through a cell wall, for instance.

@Kawa
As much as I would want to go the museum, there are… ‘complications’ which prevent me from going (and there is no workaround).
Not sure if these deals are specific to my area, but I tripped across these Prime Now deals:
Angel Soft bathroom tissue, 12 double rolls for $2.49, no quantity limit (I ordered 4 pk; I’m set for the next year).
Tostitos Scoops corn chips, 14.5oz bag, $0.25, no quantity limit.
Free delivery in Prime Now service areas (with $20 min order). YMMV.
I placed a $21 order, then used promotional code 10PRIMENOW for a $10 discount. I just purchased about $45 worth of goods for eleven bucks! And free delivery!
@ruouttaurmind Not available in my area yet. Probably never. Sigh.
@ruouttaurmind
What? No tip?
@PlacidPenguin Having worked for tips in my past, I understand the struggle and I always tip in cash.
@ruouttaurmind
Even better.
@ruouttaurmind
I found two issues with regards to your order…
@PlacidPenguin Hmm… and they are??
@ruouttaurmind
The toilet paper wasn’t sent to Meh, and the Scoops weren’t sent to me.
@PlacidPenguin LMAO!
Well, after eating all those scoops, you’d be wanting some of that toilet paper, innit. So there are really three issues.
But the idea of sending a few hundred rolls of TP to the Mediocre worldwide headquarters is awesome. I wish I had thought of it!
@OldCatLady Mine either.
@ruouttaurmind
Wait a second… You’re sending toilet paper to the lair (/castle/mansion) of @snapster?
@PlacidPenguin Not yet, but I’m certainly considering sending a few dozen cases to PlacidPenguin’s top secret fortress of solitude.
/giphy fortress of solitude
And maybe a case or two to @giphy to wipe up the crap results being returned!
@ruouttaurmind

$15 off a $30 purchase at https://greatergood.com with coupon code treat15. This website supports a variety of nonprofits, including animal rescue. According to their website they have donated over $45 million to charity. I’ve been pleased with my purchases there. Plan to do some shopping later.
