12Bear with me folks, I’ve pretty much ignored the goat threads for the past 2 years. So I really have no idea wut I’m doing. I have to do extensive remedial activity as soon as the short prius gets me home later this afternoon. So without further adon’t blame away.

There’s been no right or wrong way in handling goatdom here. Some have told stories. Some have told off everyone. Some respond with pics. Some respond with poetry. And some don’t respond at all.
Take it all in stride. It’s what you make of it.
And if all else fails, there are /giphy searches that may as well be completely random.

The 60’s had their moments.

Here is a YouTube playlist.
Not sure if it’s the whole concert, which I’ve never seen.

The famous French New-Wave director, Jean-Luc Godard (known for Alphaville, Contempt, and Breathless among many many other films) collaborated with the Stones on a film about the making of the song (and named after the song also): Sympathy For The Devil.
Interesting film if I recall, can be viewed here:
It’s about an hour and a half. If I recall, there are glimpses of a few of the London “rock and and roll royalty” of that time in Godard’s film.
(I think) here is the film trailer:

It’s about an hour and a half in total.
I think a full copy can be had on the internet somewhere or other, but here is about an hour of it, in two parts, assuming these vids are what they purport to be:
The film was never formally released, due to legal disputes between the Stones and director Frank. For years, it could only be shown 4x a years at museums and universities. I saw it at the Whitney Museum in NYC.

(Not in stock)
Since Robert Frank’s film was in the courts and the Stones wanted to prevent its release, the band instead released this standard live concert film from the 1972 tour:
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones

The Stones have been pretty innovative with film.
In addition to Godard, Frank, the Maysles Brothers films, they have released an IMAX concert film, did early live streaming across in Internet during the Voodoo Lounge Tour of 1994-1995, and have worked with directors Martin Scorsese and others.

holy mother fer… those allergy tests hurt like a mother!!! I am NOT allergic to almonds… they think it is an autoimmune issue – not sure which is worse!
@mikibell I don’t like either option. Is there a third choice?
@OldCatLady not breathing on this earth??
(bubble existence??)
@mikibell honestly if you haven’t quit aspartame now.
@cranky1950
@lavikinga was talking about this.
I am guilty guilty guilty and haven’t cut them out completely yet, but I suspect that artificial sweeteners (excepting stevia) are not wonderful.
@mikibell
So sorry! This sucks.
@mikibell Hang in there.
@f00l no except
artificial sweeteners have a higher glycemic index than sugar
@Cerridwyn I’m pretty sure that’s not true.
@sammydog01 it’s an odd thing. and is not true for everyone. there was a research study done that compared it, not in a lab, but in living people, and the results were totally unexpected. but in a significant number of the participants, blood sugar rose using artificial sweetener.
It was concluded to be related to how those substances react to the mirco-biom of the intestinal tract and when they took one of the persons who had this reaction and looked at intestinal flora they found that consuming the artificial sweetener totally disrupted and changed it. it returned to normal when he went back to using natural sugar.
it was a small study and none of the subjects were diabetic. it mostly shows that nothing is black and white and how one person responds to a natural or artificial substance that is consumed can be totally different than another.
As a nation and a culture we tend to say when is true for Tom is true for Dick and Harry and none of this can be more wrong.
@Cerridwyn
Let me make sure I understand.
For some persons, blood glucose or glycemic response peaks higher after artificial sweetener consumption than after actual glucose/sucrose consumption?
And this is related to big disturbances in gut flora?
Oh wow I gotta get serious about getting rid of this.
/giphy woe is me
@cranky1950 no fake sweeteners in my life…good ole sugar only! But thank you for the input! (Dr wants me to cut that out too!!)

@f00l In my experience drinking a lot of Aspartame makes the immune system function weird. Like I was drinking 5 cans of diet caffeine free coke a night (the water in miami lakes smelled and looked like clorox, coke was .35 a can, Dansai was a buck) when it first came out and developed alopecia. You also notice the uptick in lupus and rheumatoid about the time that stuff came out, where as diabetics had been using saccharine for 70 yrs with few problems.
@Cerridwyn Do you have a reference for that? I couldn’t find it.
@sammydog01 No just personal experience
@cranky1950 we have an odd allergy to saccharine in our family… so I have avoided all of the others, since I really don’t understand why we are allergic … we already had lupus and rheumatoid in our family. out of my mother’s 5 sisters, I don’t think there is one without an autoimmune disease… and mom has RA. sigh… can’t I just be normal on one topic?

So I located my office in a little town just outside the suburbia of the metroplex I live in. I chose this location because of the serene beauty, relaxed pace and friendly locals.
I blame @cranky1950 that it’s so difficult to hire employees because of the perceived “long commute” (longer distance+no traffic=less commute time than a urban/suburban commuter).
I currently have three openings and have spent a few thousand on Monster, Career Builder and Linkedin postings with ZERO applicant responses. And it’s @cranky1950’s fault!
@ruouttaurmind try offering more than minimum wage
@cranky1950
Ruouttaurmind???!!!
@cranky1950:
You’re getting the hang of being CrankyGoat, I see.
/giphy see
@cranky1950, I actually offer pretty fair wages, commensurate with the position. Plus flexible schedule, and a pleasant office environment. Potential applicants get turned off by distance, neglecting to consider swiftness and ease of commute. All the rush hour traffic is headed the opposite direction. Into the city in the mornings and out of the city in the afternoons. I’ve had job offers declined on the basis “it’s too far” in favor of jobs that are closer to them, but take twice as long to drive with all the other sheeple.
@ruouttaurmind
Next time, point this out loudly and often. Put this info in the job listing.
I would rather commute to your kinda place, meself.
@ruouttaurmind Have you tried using a multi-site tool for posting jobs? I always hear Zip Recruiter being advertised, and that it lets you post to lots of sites at once.
Otherwise, you could try using Indeed (or if you’re looking for developers, possibly Stack Exchange).
@ruouttaurmind could you work with telecommuters? Some of your previous questions about technology seem like you might be getting ready for something like that.
@ruouttaurmind why are you not in the northeast? I could use a new job!
@ruouttaurmind what kinds jobs are you trying to fill? If appropriate list the jobs with local college placement offices.
@dashcloud I get junk mail offers from Zip Recruiter ever other day. It’s not inexpensive. But then ineffectual $500 listings on Monster or Career Builder adds up pretty swiftly. Even LinkedIn isn’t cheap.
I’ve been reconsidering Zip, or possibly even a headhunter agent. I am not familiar with Indeed, and will check into this option.
@djslack It’s because of the telecommuters I need fill seats in the office. Some tasks must be accomplished onsite, and I’ve reached the threshold of redistribution of responsibility. We’re not quite up to the challenges of a virtual office for now.
@Kidsandliz I’ve actually had some success in the past filling billets with college students and recent grads. Some positions are suitable for part-time (paid) interns, and my ability to offer flexibility in schedule is ideal for students. But I advert the jobs as full or part time because the cream of the crop are usually full-timers.
TBH, I’d rather have 2 or 3 part time students than a single full-timer. All eggs in a single basket and all that. If a full-timer is sick, vacay, or leaves the company it’s more difficult to continue functional operations. If one of the 2 or 3 part-timers leaves, we still have the ability to pivot and carry on easily enough.
I’ve also had some limited success with the local high school. Filing, answering phones, data entry, monitoring social media… all the busywork nobody else loves, but ideal for collegebound honors students looking to pad their school applications. Plus, HS kids work for free! Unfortunately the remote location of my office limits the crop to one smallish high school and a private prep school.
@mikibell
Because I hate the cold?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I occasionally complain about 110* temperatures, but when I think about the couple times I’ve been to Burlington in January… I’m thankful I live in the desert!
If what you want is basic Office and computer work, do you require special, somewhat rare, skills?
If not, I might, in your shoes, try to hire very locally, nearby residents. There ought to be a reasonable number around who might be interested in part time work or a straight office job.
City residents might not want to commute away from the city center and away from the center of the action, where their ambitions may lie.
For basic office work, there ought to be reasonably qualified people in rural and semi-rural areas, close at hand. If I would think.
If all you need is MS office skills, you might be able to hire someone reliable nearby who has taken a course or two.
Can I ask what metroplex and what industry?
@f00l The locale is Phoenix, the industry is publishing (print and digital media).
The positions I need to fill range from semi-skilled to professional. I need sales, graphics/web and a proofreader/editor/production person.
I can train suitable people for inside sales, but I really need a seasoned salt who can fetch up some whales. The regional and national accounts that require skill and contacts to reel in. My current sales mangler is… mmm, let’s say “challenged by years” and long ago lost the energy and motivation for hard work.
The area where my office is located is a somewhat affluent resort/retirement community. Of course this demographic doesn’t present a great number of employment candidates. So I draw most of my employees from the suburban areas closer to the city.
It’s a 25ish mile drive into the city, but since commuter traffic is heading opposite direction, it’s an easy 30 minute drive. People who live in the 'burbs and drive 10 to 15 miles into the primary employment centers typically commute 45 minutes or more. They tend to be turned off by the 25 mile distance to my office, without considering the shorter commute times.
Once joining us, employees tend to stay. They “get it”. Beautiful setting, slower, quieter environment, pleasant people. Most of my staff has been there over 10 years.
@ruouttaurmind Ooh, semi-skilled. That’s me! Too bad I don’t live in Phoenix.
@ruouttaurmind
Q, out of curiosity:
When you located there, was it semi-affluent, or did that grow up around you? I have an image of what I might call an “affluent exurban area”.
There are a few around here. Many standard upper middle class or similar. Some beyond that, having acreage residences with panic rooms and package-wrapping rooms and the like.
I supppse your likely targeted employees don’t live nearby?
@f00l
Property values nearby are very, very high. The average home in the immediate area is, as you describe, large, with acreage and luxury amenities. People living in the immediate area are either retired, or are not interested in the wages I can offer. Although I offer fair pay commensurate with the job, working people living nearby are typically beyond the level of jobs I’m offering.
The area has been affluent for decades, but in the real estate boon of the mid-2000’s the number of very expensive homes increased dramatically. Property values exploded and pushed out the working middle class. Before then a 2 or 3 acre plot could be had for $30k/acre. Now prices are north of quarter mil an acre for undeveloped land. Put a 4000 sqft house on a 2 acre plot and it’s fetching a few mil. Before the real estate crash in '08 it was common to see 5 and 6 mil homes being sold regularly.
I had thought that I was confused about what day it has been all week long due to the holiday. But now I see @cranky1950 is to blame.

Lousy cold.
I blame you @cranky1950.
@PlacidPenguin Hey anything I can do y’no.
Got a cat bite yesterday afternoon when the damn bird startled the cat I was grooming at the no kill shelter I volunteer at. Damn bird talks a lot, squawks a lot, swears (I am sure the parents bringing in their kids to adopt a cat or dog are just thrilled with his language) and calls himself “bad bird” (I am sure he picked up the swear words from his previous owner and then got yelled at when he used them LOL). He started screeching and the cat freaked.
She sunk her fangs into the back of my hand. Now red and swollen (now 3"x2.25" and about 3/8" high), hot and red. Had to spend waaaaayyyyyyy too much on antibiotics and a doctor visit when it was much bigger this morning.
And the course I am supposed to start teaching in a couple of weeks has high odds of being canceled due to low enrollment. If that happens I have no way to pay for two months of health insurance. Shit shit shit shit shit.
And my cat was just diagnosed with asthma, needs an inhaler as the other meds haven’t stopped the wheezing and she can’t use one med because it interacts with her hyperthyroid meds (we tried it cautiously and while is decreased the inflammation she was having all sorts of problems with it). And so now I get to spend $60 or so I don’t have for the starter stuff mask thingy I need for her plus around $240 every 4-6 weeks for her inhaler… (at least my diabetic cat is in remission for now as that is seriously expensive too).
I need a full time job with benefits!!! Enough of this temp part time crap that then craps out at the last minute.
I blame the current goat @cranky1950 and about the last 6 ones on top of that for good measure.
@Kidsandliz

@f00l is sorry that
you got bitten and your hand

Professorships for
Adjuncts suck. Abuse! Meds cost
way too much. Not fair.
@Kidsandliz
Dumb question
You live in a state that did not do medicaid expansion. Do you have to be resident in that state to keep the job?
Could you move to a medicaid expansion state with relatively low COL and still keep your horrible adjunct job?
If you were paying, say, $70 for health insurance, instead of 10-20 times that, you then could afford housing in some state with reasonable housing costs. And have insurance.
If the state you moved to was not horribly far away, or there was some sort of cheap airfare, if might be possible for you to visit campus every so often.
Would that be possible?
@Kidsandliz HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, feel better now?
@cranky1950
Nope. Don’t think so.
So…
The unpaid case for my listing of ASOIAF finally closed a little while ago.
Meanwhile, the relisting of it got 2 bids. Naturally though, the person currently winning it is also in Israel.
I would say I smell a conspiracy, but with this cold I can’t smell anything.
@PlacidPenguin
You know that you can block foreign bids, don’t you?
@f00l
The strange thing is, I already have foreign bids blocked.
Just looked at it, this blocking only blocks those who have a foreign shipping address.
I suppose it’s possible that they have shipping addresses in the US…
@f00l
A guy from Florida ended up winning.
(And yes, I’m holding back from making jokes.)
I got laid off yesterday, and clearly it’s all your fault.
@Kawa oh no…
@Kawa That really sucks! Hoping for a speedy move to a new job for you.
@Kawa
Oh that’s awful.
What are your prospects? Are there decent opportunities around?
Was your old company in a state where you could see layoffs coming?
I hope they offered you a decent payoff package. If they didn’t, try to negotiate one if you can. Sometime people are so bummed out that it’s hard to get oneself to do this.
Please rely on your friends and family (esp local ones) to be super supportive and help you keep your mood from falling too much, and help you with brainstorming and contacts and reaching mg out to possibilities.
Apart from getting opportunities, this can make a huge emotional diff to you. At times like this, being isolated is not so great.
@Kawa No really the bosses 16 y/o nephew was clearly more qualified than you. Good luck hope you have a very short job search.
@Kawa Sorry to hear that. That sucks. Hope you live in a state that pays decent unemployment compensation (it varies by state).
@f00l I’ve got one solid opportunity at a competitor, and I’m sure I can figure out a way for my skills to translate. A few months ago an email was sent out warning that restructuring was coming, so I had at least some idea. I’m certainly very blessed/privileged to have a great support network.
@cranky1950 They actually eliminated the position, along with 475 others throughout NYC.
@Kidsandliz I’m on payroll for two more weeks, so health insurance for three. I’ll also get a lump sum for my paid leave, which will be a pretty significant chunk of change. I haven’t researched unemployment compensation just yet, but given the blue bubble I’m in, it shouldn’t be too terrible.
To all of you, thanks for your well wishes.
@Kawa
Unemployment compensation - sign up the day after your last day. You have a 1 week waiting period.
Health insurance - tell them you want to pay for COBRA - that continues your health insurance for 18 months. You pay your portion, employer portion, plus 10%. If that is too expensive check the ACA stuff. They go by your annual income for rates so it is going to be higher than if your annual income is what it will be when your paycheck ends - their may be exceptions (for example being laid off so you might want to read about it/ask). You may or may not be able to get medicaid if your state expanded it and your unemployment compensation is low enough. Take a good look at those options as generally there are far fewer providers that accept ACA and medicaid. If you can afford it COBRA would likely be a better, more comprehensive option.
Food stamps - If you have less than $2000 in anything except retirement accounts (eg bank, stocks, etc.) and your income is at or below the poverty line you get this. The most one person gets is $194/mo. You don’t pay tax on food (but do pay tax on coupons - go figure) which may or may not matter if your state charges tax on food (mine does).
Student loans - if you have them and paying them is going to break the bank and you are not on one of the income dependent plans you can defer them for 3 years being unemployed. Subsidized loans have the interest paid by the government, unsubsidized ones do not so you either pay the interest or it is capitalized.
Good luck with all of this.
@cranky1950
I blame you for two days or major storms, lots of gorgeous lightning, hard rain, long slow soft rain, lots of long power outages, some flooded intersections, and other consequences.

That gif focused on pee insults, not on potion masters. And Snape snarling “Obviously” does not suck, as gifs go.
I did like that one, tho. Perhaps I should have stuck with it for the absurdity.
The Gif Not Chosen
*Two gifs diverged in choice: “Which would?”,
And wishing that I might post them both,
Yet be a chooser, long I stood,
And gazed at the one as long as I could,
'Till it vanished in internet undergrowth.
Then chose the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps a better claim;
For it was clever, and wanted wear;
Tho, as for that, the observed wit there
Was in each really about the same.
Well, both gifs that moment before me lay,
In image search that I rarely backtrack.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet, knowing how gifs recede away,
I doubted I should ever come back.
I might be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere, minutes and minutes hence;
Two gifs, they bade me choose, and I:
I chose the second that came by;
And has that made all the difference?
(I might have stolen some of that.)
@narfcake
Well the good news is, I can’t find anybody in the Fort Worth area willing to put their sanity on the line just to get an autograph for me from one of the minds behind a webcomic which I really like.

@cranky1950 @f00l
But then again probably better on your toe than on your head…
@PlacidPenguin
If you want one;

If I were buying, would prob want one that’s not an ex-library copy, and has a dust jacket, and is in at least “Good” condition.
This particular one has that gorgeous photo of Everest colored red on the cover.
You can also find them on Ebay, but if they don’t show a photo of the book with the dust jacket, it’s hard to tell if it’s the right book.
The Times has now published I think 14(?) Editions of the Comprehensive World Atlas (this one, but the title can vary slightly), along with an Explorer’s Atlases, Historical Atlases, Mini and Concise Atlases, Ancient History Atlases, etc. So finding what you are looking for on Ebay can be a PITA.
That search applied es to the 1977 edition. The latest was published in 2014 and is gorgeous but Is Not Inexpensive.
@f00l
I just want a few pictures from it.
Still trying to motivate myself to look for a certain dictionary.
Although the info I want from this dictionary is easily available online.
@f00l
No more eBay shopping on my part until I replenish the fund I have for stuff I don’t need.
@PlacidPenguin
Which pix?
The thing is, even tho the book is large, the plates are quite detailed with v small text. They didn’t go for great tonal contrast.
Making stuff out on the plates can require some concentration.
I’m perfectly willing to try pix. But they may come out badly.
@cranky1950 now i have the song "you got the whole world in your hands thewhole world in your hands " stuck in my head. I blame you
@f00l
The 2014 Edition can be searched for here:

I’m not seeing anyone selling for less than Amazon does tho. I didn’t see any used ones for under $100.
I suppose more people than @OldCatLady and I covet great atlases.
@CaptAmehrican
Always glad to help.
Can we redo the lyrics to
"You dropped the whole world on your toe"?
@CaptAmehrican
Just watch/listen to any song from this thread about 2 dozen times.
@Kidsandliz
If I had dropped it on my head, it would have hurt a lot less, and no chance of damage there either.
@narfcake
Not sure why you starred my comment. You’re not supposed to know the contents of that thread. (Although you’ve made posts there anyways…)
@CaptAmehrican
@PlacidPenguin Must. Pad. Altruism. Score.
(I suppose I could post less and get the same results … but you know and I know the answer to that! And can I haz catshirt?)
@snapster
No catshirts for @narfcake.

@cranky1950
Not only did that Atlas try to cripple me, it imprisoned me for more than 10 hours of lost time. So far.
I struggled mightily, but could not escape.
Fie! Blame!
@f00l
@f00l It’s a time machine. Open it and you’re transported back to 1977. I’ve started checking for any of its siblings in thrift stores.
@OldCatLady
I found it from bookfinder.com. Which searches Amazon including abroad, alibris, abebooks, and a bunch of other places. I don’t know if they search EBay or half.com tho.
Just lucked out.
If you have a half price books store around, it can be worth a visit to the reference or travel sections.
Now that I’ve looked at this one, I suddenly covet a whole series of them. So I can compare as the political situation changed. Also want to compare mapping style over time, just to my eye - I don’t know anything about mapping.
Of course since they started this in the late 1800’s the early editions are prob not something I’d ever be willing to put up the bucks for.
However, the post WWII editions might be had for reasonable $ if one is willing to lie in wait for a while.
This trick is make sure you’re getting the big ones, not the other ones. Sometimes it’s tricky unless you have either the isbn or pub year. And on eBay some sellers are really lax about what they put in the listing.
I think Wikipedia has a full list of editions?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Atlas_of_the_World
@OldCatLady
Here’s a teaser.
@f00l @OldCatLady Pity that I didn’t know either of you when I retired. I left behind one of those pull-down maps of the world, but with a European perspective. It was from the very early fifties, and had all the lovely country names of the day. Helpful also if you spoke, or at least read, German (the map was made in West Germany).
I used to live in a world of maps (among other things). I still love them. I trust not the GPS; give me a damned map, every time. I used to love these:
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/resources/cia-maps-publications
I remember when they came on nine-track tapes, encoded in EBCDIC. All those railroads, and rivers, and lakes, and country boundaries; I almost miss working. Almost.
@Shrdlu
Map data encoded in EBCDIC on tape. Woah.
Just hope it wasn’t on paper tape.
@Shrdlu
I do trust the gps, a lot. Cause lazy.
Cause there it is.
I also have a decent garmin standalone something. And a handheld Garmin hiking thing I never messed with much.
But I love maps. In books. In Atlases. On paper. Accordion folded.
When @OldCatLady tripped the *must have maps" switch in my head, I picked up some other atlases I remembered from childhood. Some of them were intended for kids. Some I’m still trying to remember the title or publisher of.
The Times Atlas was the only one I spent notable $ only. And it wasn’t that bad. $30 plus shipping I think? I think I was quite lucky with that.
I just succumbed tho to NEW tho, after seeing the one from the 70’s. I had a gift cert for Amazon. It just went to the new ed Times Atlas. The one that’s $130 or something.
Idiot is me.
Ok I can return it if I think better of it. Only I won’t think better of it. I just know. I am a blockhead.
Around here you can get county mapsco’s with huge street by street neighborhood grids. A lot of realtors and other people who have to find places carry them. But they’re not cheap at all, and promptly out of date.
I do use paper maps for trips, unless I simply refused to plan that time. Usually. I keep my Rand McNally national road atlas and I have a decent Texas-specific atlas somewhere.
Apart from needing a data connection or a downloaded map; google maps or whatever can get me places.
But a paper map is what makes me want to go someplace. Have to go someplace. Have to put my bare feet into the Frio River, which is, you guessed it, quite cold, even in August.
Paper maps makes me need to see things I’ve never seen, never thought about seeing, until I saw them on a map.
I really love my old vintage maps of what was, in the politically incorrect terms of the era, called an “Indian Country map”.
These can be found on Ebay. Tony Hillerman supposedly used them a lot when he was doing research for his books, and they may still be the best guide to that world.
Just what you could expect: NM, AZ, southern CO, UT, NV.
Chaco Canyon. Canyon De Chelly. Shiprock. Window Rock. The Checkerboard. El Morro. Glen Canyon Reservoir. The Colorado and the San Juan Rivers. Acoma. Alamagordo and White Sands. Gila. More than an hour in Los Alamos someday. And more than an hour in an explosion calderas that look exactly like an NM alpine mountain pasture.
And Chimayo and Bryce and Mesa Verde and Escalante. Perhaps back to St Mary’s glacier and to Idaho Springs someday, or to the Tetons and to Yellowstone, where I’ve never been. The Humbolt and Carson Sinks, which I’ve never seen. The steep eastern face of the Sierra Nevada, which broke the hearts of those settlers who had survived crossing the Great Basin.
And in a thousand other places where it still feels that the land and wind and sky and water might still know things of significance to our kind, if I let my imagination run loose a bit. Or if I knew the things people once commonly knew.
And more.
The people, the history, the landscape, the emptiness, the wind that teases at history. Someday I still hope to spend serious time there, not just in imagination and tiny experiences.
It’s not the maps from google maps that call to me.
I am a blockhead and a silly one, but it all has its moments now and then.
@f00l Briefly. Paper tape was a LONG time ago (although I’ve loaded an OS into the computer from paper tape, back in 1979 or 1980). EBCDIC was used until very recently (still may be in use, for all I know). It was, and is, an efficient way to encode data. I used to have the dd command memorized to read the data from the tape, turning it into ASCII, and storing it for later use.
@Shrdlu
As I am un-young now, way back when I was un-un-un-un-young, I have used paper tape (1960’s, in middle school?), cartridges, magnetic reels, punch cards, ASCII, and EBCDIC, when I had access. At the time I thought it was all cool, and it did not make my head hurt much, back then; unless I happened to be hung over already.
Only, with mainframes, I had to either sneak around when no one was looking, or perhaps smoke dope with the operators, if I actually wanted to touch the physical machines. Smoking dope with the operators was something a lot of people did anyway, in some settings.
(You didn’t actually have to smoke dope. You could get by with just being nice, and with not being an ass, to the operators; the operators seemed to find this unusually civilized conduct quite refreshing.)
(City, yes; uni, yes; banks, no; fed, no. No “smoke dope”, I mean. It was still refreshing to the operators in more secure and formal settings if other people - even stone cold sober people - weren’t asses.)
I actually had no damn biz touching the machines or being in the room with them. But I didn’t know that then. Despite knowing a little stuff here and there, I mostly didn’t know much of anything. I didn’t even know anything about the stuff I knew a little about.

4 days of hard rain and soft rain and a little minor street flooding. Yeah!
This means we almost surely won’t have the sort of summer where we start counting the # of days over 100F and wondering if we’ll make it to October.
That doesn’t seem to happen here when the water table is high.
So I guess I blame you that the summer will be relatively quite nice!
All of you in the southern inland CA and AZ deserts can stop sneering at us for being wusses. We have real humidity here.
OK, by your standards, maybe we are wusses. In that case, enjoy your summers that are so much hotter than ours. ; )
@f00l It’s been raining here since Thursday, I think Florida has followed me north. May was in the 90s at times, that’s August weather here. Ida no I’d rather it be 110 and no humidity than 100/100.

It’s @cranky1950’s fault that my ulcers are back, and I have to take yucky meds and have undignified things done to my insides. Blame!
@OldCatLady Oh well guess it’s back to gin and malox. The upside is you get to eat Tums and wander around asking strangers to pull your finger.
@OldCatLady Sorry. I hope they fix it.
@OldCatLady Guess it does kinda really suck when the undignified things are not of your own choosing.
@OldCatLady You’re doing something worng, cat lady’s cause ulcers not get them.
@cranky1950 I would be very pleased to pass these to someone else. You can have the barium ‘smoothies’, too.
@OldCatLady
Serious ick. So sorry.
Are there any lifestyles one can do to mitigate this?
@f00l They all involve giving up coffee. Have I mentioned how many coffeemakers I own?
@OldCatLady Uh no. malox and jack is as theraputic as I ever want to get.
@OldCatLady Well to make it up to you, I’ll come down and rub your belly if you get me into the Ringling Museum.
@cranky1950 you are in luck…clowns get in free!
@OldCatLady I am sorry your belly hurts…I can sympathize, it sucks big time!
@cranky1950
Isn’t the Ringling Museum on the other coast?
@OldCatLady
I thought the incidence of ulcers were currently thought to be related to NSAIDs and steroid use, or that guilty bacteria. How does coffee make it all worse?
@f00l Coffee hurts. I haven’t had any since last week, don’t do NSAIDS etc. I did the H. pylorii antibiotic routine, and was certified clean. CT scan & endo have been scheduled.
@cranky1950 Even wine hurts. Everything hurts. And the museum is on the other coast, and I’ve never been, but it’s on my list.
@OldCatLady
More yuck. I am very sorry you get to face all this.
@f00l @mikibell Thank you. I’m distracting myself with pictures. Oh look, here’s somebody in my age group.
@OldCatLady Where are you Palm Coast? thought you were Tampaish.
You also have to get down to Ft Meyers and the Edison Winter Compound. It’s amazing especially if you’re an engineering geek such as moi.
@OldCatLady almost the same age…
He could leave his boots under my bed anytime!
@OldCatLady Oh God they’re gonna start tittering
@OldCatLady Have you tried switching to a different style of bean or roast to see if that makes a difference? Hate to see you have to give up coffee.
@dashcloud Short answer: Yes. I have three kinds of whole beans, any number of K-cups of varying blends, decaf stuff… The Vietnam Vets will come pick up a few boxes of stuff later this month, and I’ll have everything packed. Except one French press, and one Cuisinart, and one Keurig, and maybe the K-cup brewer. Uh…
@OldCatLady What can you eat that does not aggravate the ulcer?
@OldCatLady You can make cocoa in the Keurig, right?
@sammydog01 Yes! Cocoa! Right. And the others are in case I have guests who want coffee.
@OldCatLady Sam’s on the grit channel right now
@cranky1950 Chicken noodle soup, boiled eggs, oatmeal. However, the CT scan was clear, and I have sucralfate, which is better than Maalox.
@OldCatLady so you can go to the deli for matzoh ball soup the universal remedy.
@cranky1950 I would if I could. I’m in Jacksonville, there are precious few delis here. A few BBQ and/or wing places, lots and lots of chains. Everything is deep fried.
@OldCatLady
Should I send you some?
@OldCatLady
I’m terribly sorry you have this affliction. In your case, might this be considered kinda autoimmune?
I’m terribly sorry about the pain and stress and discomfort.
I’m terribly sorry that you may have to consider carefully what you eat.
And I’m terribly sorry you have to give up coffee.
@PlacidPenguin Nah, just have a bowl for me. There’s a place in Virginia Beach that made the best I’ve ever tasted, but they closed three years ago.
@OldCatLady Can you get away with drinking bancha tea or does that cause problems too. You’re gonna have to regress 40 years and go on a macrobiotic diet.
@cranky1950 So far, white tea with lots of milk is working. I open a bag of coffee beans and inhale; that helps. I have a large container of matcha tea; I’ll try that next. I want a latte. Oh crap, I should get rid of my espresso/cappuccino machine, too.
@OldCatLady
Can’t imagine that they’d be much help to you though.
@OldCatLady matcha might tear you up. Bancha is simmered twigs gives you nutrients and I very watered down. East West foundation warned folks not to drink tea daily as it was medicine, but bancha was food.
@cranky1950 I’ll pick some up tomorrow, and some more ginseng tea. Thanks for the tip.
@OldCatLady have you tried rooibos tea? Just wondering how it compares to black tea and how it is on the gut. Dr advised all sorts of good for me crap…like no more bread… (just take away my will for living while you’re at it, Doctor) Ezekiel is the only type she will allow…slooooowwly considering changing (again worried about belly…don’t want to fix one problem and
exacerbate another!)
@mikibell Rooibos is wonderful. I first heard about it through the Alexander McCall Smith books. It’s pretty, easy on the gut and really quenches thirst. Right now I’m drinking bancha tea suggested by @cranky1950. It’s the green tea used for everyday in Japan, much cheaper ($19. for a pound. I had to use a large canister, BLAME!) than Lipton’s. I think its fragrance and taste are lovely, and it has enough caffeine to really get you wired.
@OldCatLady awesome…looking for decaf…if I have caffeine after 3 pm I am an evil witch…(ok…i might be that regardless ) …i will buy a small box of it on the zon and try it. It does feel like my grandmother will roll over in her grave. It was Tetley or nothing for her!
@cranky1950
I’m sorry I’m late with this, I’ve been dealing with some shit.

But the pot helps.
@Pavlov Never do things halfway, do you? Good on you. My state approved pot and is now locked up on how to do it.
@Pavlov
Hope you’re past the worst of it.
Every time I hear about someone choosing to do this, I am reminded of the side story in To Kill A Mockingbird, where Scout and Jem read to their dying neighbor, who has chosen to achieve freedom from painkillers before she dies.
Congrats on seeing through a tough choice you prob could have avoided, had you wished.

@Pavlov Keep fighting. Percocet is the devil, can’t function without it when you’re hurting though.
@f00l Thanks for that . . . It was helpful, and I had forgotten about the passage.
I had scored a few bottles of Laudanum a month or so ago. Yes, they still make it - primarily for treatment of severe diarrhea that doesn’t respond to other (more modern) molecules (hyoscyamine, etc.).
Drank both those bottles in two weeks. 114 Grams of anhydrous morphine per bottle.
(Insert “holy fuck man” here)
When I got my head clear I figured I didn’t want to be an opium eater and am fighting my way out of this before going back down south. Shit is waaaaay to easy to score down south - I need my head clear.

@Pavlov
Artie Lange said something like (paraphrase):
“You can get off it, you can get clean, but you can’t get the knowledge of it out of your brain. It calls to you in your brain.”
But tho I love Artie, I think he got much further into it than you, so I hope you will experience much less of that than he did. And I don’t think he had (in the old days) anything like your reserves of discipline. He was famous 5-10 years ago for not having any discipline at all.
I hope he’s ok now. Every time he publishes a new book, I’m a little afraid to find out he’s still in opiate prison hell, or another kind of hell.
You have your substantial history of taking on big personal challenges, and you have your huge intellectual and artistic curiosity, and your personal discipline.
And you have your family, and esp @MrsPavlov, who both supports you and gives you shit; and I hope you are far better armed and prepared for this next phase than Artie Lange, the perpetual “funny guy” was in his past.
You’re surely not the only person here who had to painfully remake themselves a few times. In the Imperfection Sweepstakes, you’ve got lots of company. There are plenty of reasons people have to undo destructive parts of themselves, and figure out how to let/allow themselves to be helped, and how to get thru a day with a quite a large dose of well-earned humility and quiet clarity.
If you go through tough times and bad days, do us a favor, ok?
If you are tempted toward self-loathing or massive guilt or thinking you are worthless, or disgusting, etc, how about:
Either skip that part (it’s way way way untrue and a totally unproductive waste of time and energy anyway) or else tell @MrsPavlov to just knock that shit right out of you.
Or come here and let us do it.
@Pavlov Wishing you strength in/with your hard times.
Okay so I don’t think I’ve ever actually laid down some blame in one of these threads before. But two days ago my recently adopted adolescent Great Dane got her foot tangled in my tablet cord and ran for the bedroom, yanking the tablet to the floor and breaking it. I can’t blame her, as she’s still got some trauma from a very turbulent and possibly abusive early life. So I’m going to put the blame on our goat of the month.
@moondrake

@moondrake For I cannot tell a lie, I wrapped that cable around that poor doggies laig,
@cranky1950 Wow, you have some majorly impressive ninja skills! Tempest interrupted my meh chatting to give me kissy face and that’s when she got her foot tangled up. I’m very impressed that you were able to sneak in here and wrap the cord around her foot without us noticing. Making your escape in the ensuing chaos must have been a breeze after that. Kudos.
@moondrake It helps that Great Danes have enormous feet. What will she weigh when she’s full grown?
@OldCatLady She’s a petite little thing, the girliest Dane I’ve ever had. I doubt she’ll ever break 130.
Consider yourself un-blamed, @cranky1950. For now.

Just got an email from Amazon that my order for a copy of Beren and Luthien by J.R.R Tolkein (which I placed March 20) was cancelled.
I was looking at the listing last night, and saw that there were reviews for it already, so I was confused. While upset, at least they refunded everything (including courtesy credit which I used).
Naturally though, this is the fault of @cranky1950.
@PlacidPenguin It’s for the best, you read too much go play mah jong. *

@narfcake It was funny until the ball gag.
Okay, it’s still kinda funny.
@PlacidPenguin
I ordered my copy in early March (same edition or version). Also got a cold-hearted cancellation email today from Amazon.
Only this annoyed me, and I did some poking around.
The reason that there are reviews already, is that the book became available on June 1. In addition to the version you and I ordered, Amazon has three other versions: another similar hardback version, a paperback version, and a Kindle version. Many customers already have their copies from Amazon and elsewhere, and have left reviews, as well as some customers who probably managed to get their hands on ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) versions, the small, plain versions sent out to book reviewers in advance of publication.
So you and I ordered the hardback that was about $16.xx.

I can’t get anyone at Amazon to tell my exactly why they cancelled so many orders (it appears many orders were cancelled.)
Doing some poking around and guessing, my best possible explanation is that the one you and I ordered is the UK/Canada publisher’s edition, which should have never been for sale in the US, except as a used or imported book.
The slightly more expensive version they have in stock is the US publisher’s edition, the only version that ought ever to have been listed for sale in the US as a new, non-imported book through an established bookseller.
So the original Amazon listing we purchased is likely erroneous and should have never been for sale here new. The non-explanatory email they sent cancelling the order was unpleasant; what they should have done is, offer everyone a $2 discount and a link to purchase the US version.
Anyway, I got them to do that for me. I called them, and purchased the US version, and got them to then apply a $2 credit to my account.
I will have to point out that all this toil and trouble, and Amazon’s original erroneous offer of the new UK edition - all this is clearly the fault of @cranky1950.

The least you could’ve done was pass the blame onto the resident shirtgoat instead, y’know!!
I blame @cranky1950 that so far this weekend I’ve accomplished nothing except fighting with various devices.
@f00l Oh bless your heart
@cranky1950 You do realize that people in Texas know how to translate that, right?
@OldCatLady
It’s ok. He’s just cranky.
@OldCatLady uh huh that’s the point. Timing is everything when you use that one
@cranky1950
I forgive you. Totally.
@f00l You ahhhh really need to do something about that breath
@cranky1950
I will do something. I will cherish it.
Atlanta or thereabouts, yes?
Too bad I can’t just destroy the entire metropolis. Atlanta contains people I’m quite fond of. Guess I’ll have to get a more precise read on the target.
@f00l I can see how you’d be pretty much a monster before that first suck of coffee.
@cranky1950 Please stop drawing my attention to coffee. It’s been 12 days since I had any. That’s your fault.
@OldCatLady I’m sorry you’re “that stuff” challenged and will endeavor to not reference “that stuff” while you cannot have “that stuff”.
@cranky1950
Pretty much?
Before? Before anything?
As tho being a serious MONSTER is not a full-time calling in my very soul?
Sir, I am insulted.
/giphy insulted monster
I might have to dispatch some very special weird wimmen to your vicinity.
@cranky1950 You might as well tell me not to think about 45. Reminders are everywhere.
@OldCatLady I know.
/image 45’s
Are you okay with tea, or does that aggravate the ulcer also?
@OldCatLady
Is it the acidic nature of coffee and other drinks? Or just coffee that bothers you?
@f00l are you a great auntie yet?
@mikibell
I am.
: )
: )
: )
/giphy smile
Kombucha
@cranky1950 @f00l @narfcake White tea isn’t too bad, acidic drinks are bad, and kombucha has enough alcohol to get me buzzed. (I’m a cheap drunk.) Bancha tea is on order. Most herbal teas, including ginseng, are okay, and I have plenty of those. Manuka honey has healing properties, but tastes like motor oil smells, so I stir it in and then use regular honey to mask the taste. I have six coffee, espresso and cappuccino makers boxed for pickup. Basta!
@OldCatLady
: (
Glad you have a few alts.
Unblame: my oldest graduated HS Sat and half way through the day said it didnt suck as much as he thought it would (he expected long boring speeches and not much fun when his grandparents took him shopping for a blazer as his graduation gift).
We (parents and teens) love the Deadpool scene:
Deadpool: "Sullen silence or mean comment?"
Negasonic Teenage Warhead: “You kinda boxed me in here.”
My dryer wasn’t drying well so I took apart the vent to make sure the stupid starlings hadn’t put another nest in there. Nope, it was wrens. I love wrens. There were three tiny eggs. And I cooked them. Stupid goat.
@sammydog01 Awww. Can you put up a birdhouse to make amends?
@OldCatLady I have four bird houses up. They prefer the dryer vent.
@sammydog01 Make a birdhouse out of dryer vent!
@OldCatLady That’s actually a pretty good idea. I may try it next year.
Blame: Kettler Wetterfest chairs can be taken apart for ease in cleaning, and I’ve had them fifteen years and never knew. Tomorrow will be spent pressure washing them and grumbling. Your fault, goat!
@OldCatLady nanny nanny boo boo
I’m lazy today.
@cranky1950 I blame you
Plus soon it will be hot. Some places it is already hot.
Hereabout, hovering close to 100F or above counts as hot.
Blame you * {lots}
@f00l
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/highly-efficient?ref=meh_com
I went to mail a package at the UPS store today. They had one person working. The people in front of me had 72 packages to send. Yes, SEVENTY-TWO PACKAGES!!! You know the UPS truck will come to you if you have 72 packages, right? Stupid goat, messing up my day.
@sammydog01 I’ll try to do better next time.
@sammydog01
You can drop off or pay for UPS and FedEx and DHL at all those private mailbox places. You know that right?
You don’t have to “go to the vendor and stand in line”.
@f00l May be it makes her feel all business
@cranky1950 fuking autocorrect that’s businessy
@cranky1950 Yep, I put on my suit, pearls, low heeled pumps and everything.
@f00l I needed an estimate to make sure I didn’t have to go home and take stuff out, and I don’t own a postage scale.
/giphy so there
@sammydog01
Ok.
I’m thoroughly (“So there!”)'d.
Overcast. Possibly storms.
This is like a summer I remember from childhood, when serious rain during summer was not unknown.
@cranky1950
I blame you for giving me hope of a really nice pleasant summer instead of one of those “make a few heat records” summers.
@f00l My pleasure. Anything I can do.
@cranky1950 gets an unblame because @shrdlu is great.
@narfcake whew
@cranky1950
For that:
(Major Unblame)^(Umpteenth)
I say!
/giphy umpteenth
@narfcake didn’t we already know that? Why is it an unblame?
Personally, I’m just confused. Not unusual, of course.
@Shrdlu
Sometimes I think
Enlightened Confusion = Sanity = Zen.
But then sometimes I don’t think.
@f00l
PS
@cranky1950
I blame you for the existence of confusion.
Are you cranky yet? Do you need to be crankier?
Do tell.
@f00l Huh? ? ? ?
I’m blaming @cranky1950 because @shrdlu is confused over your unblaming. And blaming you again because I was off a couple digits in probating the reported spammer yesterday.
(The last time, I accidentally gave a 10+ year probation instead of a 1+ year probation. Oops.)
I blame you because I bought a bottle of malbec wine, since it was on sale and looked interesting. Now I see that it’s the darkest wine on the market, so once I open it, it must be drunk directly to avoid spillage and staining. It may take me a few days. Your fault, goat!
@OldCatLady you could use a straw???
@OldCatLady Make wine slushies.
@sammydog01 That’s an idea. I’m packing Mehrican exchange stuff, so someone may get a very random box, depending on how fast the bottle goes.
@OldCatLady Yes it’s my fault that you are a wine wimp.
@OldCatLady hehe we already know they are getting 2x sweatshirts
@cranky1950
I blame you for being cranky.
I also blame you for not being cranky enough
You could be more cranky. You could try.
Also i blame you for the heatwave. A bit warm here. Quite hot in AZ tho.
@f00l Hey I am everything to everyone, well except the tentacle henti freaks.
@cranky1950
I blame you for not being anything to the tentacle henti freaks.
@f00l Up ya nose widda rubba hose.
@cranky1950
Like this?
@f00l ewww that can’t be healthy.
@cranky1950 You know, there really is no requirement for your goat regime to try to outdo others in terms of disaster. I got hurricanes. Others had an outbreak of tornadoes. Melting the runways in one state and producing two tropical storms on the same day seems a little show-offy.
@OldCatLady Hey if you’re gonna do something you should totally commit to giving your all.
I blame you that the fun mini tri I am involved with is now scheduled for the same day as a 5k I am signed up for. So I have morning 5 mile bike 2 mile run short sail evening 5k run plus helping set up and tear down.
@CaptAmehrican Stop whining slacker.
@CaptAmehrican Cheer up, at the rate the weather is disintegrating, they’ll both be cancelled.
@CaptAmehrican
You tri? Mini-tri?
So cool! Am impressed.
My niece and cousin started with 5k’s. Then half marathons. Then marathons. Then tri’s. Now ironmans. Several a year. Fate worse than death, obviously.
My other cousin is a wimp who only does marathons.
I am smart, I sit on the couch and don’t think about it much.
PS
I really really admire you.
PPS
you are an asshole for being so much fitter than the rest of us.
PPPS
You are fitter than the rest of us but you are not an asshole.
PPPPS.
i might possibly be an asshole.
PPPPPS.
@cranky1950 I blame you because I am an asshole.
@f00l key word is mini. I am part of a commitee that is organizing a mini tri. It is a 3 mile bike thru ft mchenry, 2 mile run to the science center ,and a2 leg sail
It is no where near regular tri length it is a silly event that raises money to help handicaped kids get to learn to sail.
On each leg at your midpoint you get two poker cards. Winning is done by poker hands not time. The goal is to finish and have fun.
However I have been doing c25k getting up to the ability to run a 5k so these 2 event will be exhausting together. Partucularly as i will be up early doing set up.
@CaptAmehrican
Yeah, but I still admire you.
And I am still an asshole. You are not.
@cranky1950, I blame you because I would collapse after the first 20 seconds of a marathon or ironman.
Your fault.
@f00l Well between the two of us we’ve 40sec done if we tag team.
@CaptAmehrican So let us go how it goes. You back on tall ships this summer rather than the water taxi?
I know that they said that this was because of a mistake by a Caltech staffer, but I know you’re to blame for this @cranky1950
On the other hand, the alert distracted me from something which I didn’t want to do, so take additional blame for that other thing even happening in the first place.
(Did I do this right?)
@SpaceBreak June 29, 2025 …
@narfcake
Ooooh. The day I ascend to God-like powers! How special!
@cranky1950 ruined my favorite highway.
@SpaceBreak
Your punishment for living in what used to be near-paradise.
@SpaceBreak Yes, but it created 13 acres of property with a great view. Sooner or later there will be a concessions area and hiking trail. http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/01/us/big-sur-landslide/index.html
@OldCatLady
I guess that’s a bright side.
Although they’re saying it could take a year + millions of dollars to clean.
As a side note, I’m blaming @cranky1950 for my posting this in the wrong month.
@thismyusername you don’t want to be there when the yellowstone caldera erupts anyway. Personally if feel that it’s God’s punishment for not making more Beach Party movies.
@cranky1950
I approve of your theology, sir.
/giphy "Beach blanket bingo"
@f00l
That giphy isn’t a beach party, but it stays.
@cranky1950 Cue Jimmy Buffet - Volcano
@f00l it is only missing the beach, party is in full force.
@cranky1950
Allergies. Your fault. Thanks for the misery.
/giphy pollen
I am confused about most things. Well, about everything,actually,but I don’t wanna come off as bragging or something.
@cranky1950,

@f00l Wheeeeeeeedoggies
@cranky1950 How’d they get that many pit puppies to sit still and kick the crap out of one another long enough to take that shot. Probably superglue.

You’ll be unblamed if the catpix-to-politics ratio improves, though.
@narfcake Fifty posts on a shirt thread not including the ones you removed? Pretty impressive.
@narfcake
What’s going on over there that I should blame @cranky1950 for?
@f00l A bunch of right-wing snowflakes thinks the designs these few days were about them and/or the POTUS.
@narfcake
nothing quite like imagining having received a non-existent offense, so that one can be all offended and militant and self-righteous about it.
glad they have a way to keep busy and off the streets, since the adoption of no activity or attitude more productive seems to occur to them; but sincerely wish they would do that pointless noise-making somewhere else.
@narfcake ‘…a republic is a raft, which would never sink, but then your feet are always in water…’ Fisher Ames, 1995. I’d love to see some of the blunter observations of the 18th century put on shirts. The snowflakes would melt down.
@narfcake Looks like you have been busy. Maybe it will be quieter until next June?
@narfcake I swear that Fisher Ames quote said 1795 when I wrote it. DYAC!
@f00l Yep.
@sammydog01 81 posts on yesterday’s shirt; page 3! In spite of the negativity and bickering, though, most of it wasn’t hateful towards one another. One edited post, zero deletions.

BLAMING @cranky1950 lots and lots because there wasn’t enough cats.
I blame you, @cranky1950-Goat, because you have ambition and want to pick your own song.
I blame you @crankygoat1950 because I am on the edge of screwing up my wrist again.
Time for the brace.
This time the tool of temptation was a chromebook touchpad.
I blame @cranky1950 for the USPS tracking function being down. Have you allowed it to be hacked? Inquiring minds want to know! First it said this:
and now it says ‘Sorry, the tracking system is having technical difficulties. Please try your search again later.’ If I wanted it later, I would have ASKED for it later. Bah!
Well what’d want you allow small govt types to get elected then whine when govt is broken. Sheesh.
One more day and I’m a statistic.
I’ve been redundaned. The down side I got a consulting gig so no laying around in my grundies soaking up suds and watching Wendy Williams.
@cranky1950 I’m sorry to hear that. What kind of organization lays people off on a Tuesday?
@cranky1950
@OldCatLady I got ,laidoff a week and a half ago. efffective tomorrow actually the end of the month. but I’m cuttin out tomorrow.
@narfcake Its actually for the best, I really didn’t like the job, I was tied to it and couldn’t leave but they could let me off the hook which they did and everyone is now happy. Best of all I get leave Hotlanta forever.
@cranky1950
I’m sorry about the layoff and disruption, but happy to hear you didn’t like the place much anyway, and that you think you’ll land on your feet.
Whither thou?
@cranky1950 I missed the cutoff for being offered a voluntary separation package by six freakin days! Why can’t I ever get offered a package???
@mikibell That’s terrible.
@cranky1950
I blame you because I have absolutely no idea what I should be doing at this exact instant.
Your Cranky Fault, Sir.
@cranky1950 …amazon just canceled my kindle unlimited subscription with no warning!! Grrr…forgot I bought it at a discount because of the apple class action suit…trying to justify full price in my mind…
@mikibell
Before you decide, check with your library. They prob have a ton of instant download free e-books.
You could always just turn on “unlimited” when you want it.
@f00l hmmm i wonder if the library card I got (and still have) in 1st grade works?
@mikibell
I have heard that in some places it does. ; )
You set up a valid card w the library and find out what other libraries they cooperate with, and what apps the use.
Download and install the app.
Login.
Voila! Books and audiobooks and who knows what. Free. Instant download, no need to go back to the library. Sometimes you have to wait a bit for a given in-demand book.
Perhaps other insta-content also. Films? Possibly magazines? Dunno. Every library is a bit different.
@f00l Are you reading 59 shades of grey again?
@cranky1950
@f00l @mikibell Of course every member of your family has their own card. JIC you have more hold requests than they allow on one card, or are limited on how many movies you can have out at one time.
@OldCatLady hmmm I am not sure the kids have library cards… Upon reading the library website, I need a new card – mine was before they barcoded the cards
@mikibell I am shocked, shocked to hear that your family doesn’t have library cards. Please rectify that immediately. And be prepared to bring proof of birth or residence for everyone. Our library system learned the hard way that if someone with five kids alongside takes out six library cards, then checks out the maximum number of DVDs on each card, neither they nor the DVDs will be seen again. It adds up.
@OldCatLady our library has crappy hours. It closes at like 5 pm each day. It isn’t in the best of areas. I loved the satellite library that was about 3 miles from our house when I was a kid. I would walk there and hide among the tomes.
With Kindle Unlimited and google and the book store, OH and Grandma’s house. We never really needed to go to the library.
@mikibell Get a card- you still don’t need to go to the library. I discovered that Overdrive has an app for my crappy Amazon Fire- I can easily download audio books. Then I stick the fire in my new speaker/stand thingy and carry my books around with me. And we get a lot of library books on our Kindles. (Secret- if you download a Kindle book and then turn off the wifi it stays until you finish reading it. Shhhhhh.)
@sammydog01 And if you download an audiobook and copy the .mp3 files somewhere else, the copies don’t go away when you return the book. Or so I’m told.
@OldCatLady
Hmmm.
Know any little birdies?
/giphy birdies
@mikibell
@sammydog01
Yeah overdrive lets you check out digital audiobooks too
And some libraries let you digitally download movies.
Just need to get the card and have a chat with the library techhead to see what your library does.
You may rarely have to visit in person after that.
I’m blaming @cranky1950 for:
@Kawa
Fate appears to hate you. You could blame @cranky1950 for that also …
@Kawa eww heat rash I can’t deal with this. ick
@cranky1950 So you’re moving north for the rest of the summer? Perhaps to Canada?
@Kawa The person sending to you has 35 posts on meh and last posted 6 days ago (made several posts). Email me if you get nothing in a couple of more days and I will email them. We do have a backup willing to send to someone who got screwed.
I blame you, @cranky1950-Goat, because I forgot to blame you yesterday.
@f00l I knew something didn’t feel quite right yesterday.
I have shin splints from wearing the wrong sneakers at a stupid Civil War museum yesterday. My job at tonight’s swim meet? Runner. Dammit @cranky1950.
@sammydog01 well why didn’t you go to the smart civil war museum instead?
@cranky1950 It was closed.

@sammydog01 I must have spelled something wrong because those gifs are crazy.
@sammydog01 That has to be Texas
@cranky1950 Were the cowboy boots a hint?
@sammydog01 y’mo i ever moticed them. em key do’t work
@cranky1950
Could be Texas. Could be.
@cranky1950
Look at the background. Aren’t those likely mobile homes?
Could be Texas
@f00l That looks like my neighborhood, except we do have paved streets.
@cranky1950 I blame you because FB had stopped showing me wet guys. Like Chris Hemsworth, aka Thor.
@OldCatLady I saw him on FB today, didn’t I?
@sammydog01 Yes you did.
@OldCatLady Ick
I blame myself because I spent all day moving out of my nifty bachelor pad and I’m sore as all getout.
@cranky1950 hopefully you moved into an even more nifty bachlor pad or a super nifty lovers place
@cranky1950 You could’ve blamed the shirtgoat while meh was selling shirts yesterday!
I blame you for that missed opportunity.
@cranky1950
You get yourself anything seriously weird to be your SO?
@f00l
Uh oh.
I meant to get some other sort of giphy-result pix. Like an insect or something.
I was waiting for the very slow loading giphy to load when someone called. 15 min on call.
Then I checked.
Big uh-oh.
@theumpercjeck it @woodhouse can you please remove the “weird” giphy above asap?
Please please please?
Emailed @CS for assistance here.
Apologies to all.
@f00l Removed
@f00l Now I want to see it.
@sammydog01 @f00l @woodhouse
@woodhouse
Wanna remove this?
And regardless of the answer to the previous question, WILL you remove it?
@woodhouse
Thx for being speedy.
@sammydog01
I don’t know why, but @placidpenguin chose to repost it. So there it is for the viewing.
Ok now it’s not there anymore.
It’s a very adorable giphy in proper context. Proper context being “cute children”.
And it fits the term “weird” a little bit;
tho kids that age have so much imagination, it really isn’t weird just seems that way sometimes to grownups.
But since I was harassing @cranky1950-Goat:
about the remark he made once about hanging out with “weird women”, and he is leaving his bachelor pad;
so I was teasing him about getting a SO who is a bit “wield”.
What I wanted was a weird insect or weird tree or weird weather. Just something innocuous and weird.
And so I did a /giphy on “weird” and then a call came in. And when I got back from the call, I saw a pic of an adorable pre-schooler and it was too late to change it.
Just OMG. I was hideously wrong to let that happen. Nauseated when I saw it, given the wrong wrong wrong context.
I should really learn to imitate being an actual adult a little more thoroughly.
Again, apologies to all. Again, thx to @woodhouse.
@PlacidPenguin Done, now it looks like you tagged us for no reason.
@woodhouse
It’s @shawn who I like to tag for no reason.
@woodhouse
Most thing look like they happen for no reason. Don’t they?
Again thx.
@sammydog01
It’s a cute pre-school kid who likes to jump fences as tho she were a horse. She’s good at it too.
I used to do the exact same thing when I was 4 or so.
In a “cute kid” thread that giphy would be delightful.
Just not in the context of me teasing @cranky1950.
Ugh. I still need to apologize.
Sorry, all.
@f00l did not see the pic…but eh…it happens…don’t see the need to apologize.
One more day to blame @cranky1950…haven’t nearly harassed him enough!!
@narfcake Damn
I blame our cranky goat I can’t sleep tonight
Guess who had to change a minivan tire herself this morning? And guess who is spending the afternoon on the sofa? Hey, goat, watch where you leave those screws.
(On the bright side it turns out that a few extra pounds are an advantage when loosening tight lug nuts. Take that TeeTurtle slim sizes.)
@sammydog01
I used to change tires when they tightened the nuts by hand. If need be, I had a long wrench I could kinda bounce on.
Then the tire places went to power tools.
I call the roadside guys now. They have power tools. They come with my insurance policy.
I have become a Master Lazy Wimp.
/giphy lazy
congrats for doing that. You are tough tough tough.
@f00l I keep meaning to get AAA again. Maybe this afternoon.
@f00l @sammydog01 I bought one of those “X” shaped tire lug nut things. You can jump on those without killing yourself to loosen them.
@Kidsandliz
I tried jumping on an “X” wrench a few times. It sorta worked until the disaster incident.
Even tho I had it tight on the nut, it fell off and I went crashing down.
The one I used to use for this on the old days (fairly safely) was like a really long “L” with a more then 3’ long arm length (to match the vertical part of the “L”).and a really short (say 4-6") arm length (to match the horizontal part of the “L”).
That one was pretty easy to bounce on. Amd you could use the vehicle for balance.
But it’s gone now. The vehicle (a 1970’s Ford Pinto) was stolen.
Even after that I could change them for a while.
But when I nearly cracked my skull and did sprain an ankle trying to loosen a power-tightened nut, using the “X” wrench that fell off the nut while i was bouncing in it, I gave it up.
@f00l I love it whem wome get all tooly.
@cranky1950 Oh, also I’ve been driving around for about a year with a screw sticking out my left front tire, but it’s a 10 ply truck tire. I’m afraid to remove it the tire needs to be replaced anyway and I really dont need it to go flat now.
@cranky1950 Do you see the washer? Click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click
My radio didn’t go high enough to cover it up. They fixed it for $24. If I had driven to the tire store the washer might have popped through and minivan tires are pricey. At least leave the washer off next time.
@sammydog01 They patch it on the inside or plug it?
@cranky1950 Don’t know. It has air in it and doesn’t click so I don’t care.
@sammydog01
I wimp out and get that road hazard thing from Discount Tire.
@sammydog01 If the tire wasn’t flat why didn’t you drive to a truckstop and have them pull the tire off fix it and put it back on?
@f00l
Yes it was stolen right off the streets of Aphabet City on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
After numerous battery thefts. I was doing Alternate Side Of The Street Parking (beloved of all Manhattanites) rather than pay $300+ a month for a reserved place in a commercial lot. (mid-1980’s).
(It was an really old crusty looking pinto. So I had a guy rig it up so that I could put a visible padlock and chain on it holding the hood shut. That stopped the battery thefts. After all, it would have been parked on a whole street of better vehicles. Plenty of battery choices there.)
So instead, some assholes broke into it and hotwired it and stole the whole car. I presume they got round the hood padlock rig somehow.
This made me mad. I kinda loved that deathtrap. It allowed me to run all over town at 4am without worrying about taxis. And allowed me to head for Maine or the Adirondacks or Cambridge whenever I felt like it.
So after the car was stolen I did have one or two small fantasies where it got rear-ended …
I felt ashamed of these fantasies, a bit, but they were just fantasies.
The car was found. Whoever stole it seemed to have driven it to a junkyard in Queens and played professional bumpercars with it there until it was smashed to smithereens. Way too much frame damage to bother fixing it.
Asked about fingerprints. All over the place in the car, but not on file.
The thieves left a few unopened bottles of really cheap whiskey in the passenger footwell. I didn’t get to keep that. “Evidence”.
The cops thought the whole thing was hilarious. The cops weren’t so bad, with that attitude, actually. It was funny. And the cops could tell that car was a small grad student luxury perk, not some family survival necessity. The cops were prob pretty relieved to deal with s situation with no tragedy attached.
The insurance paid me off and I went sadly carless for a while. Where could I have bought a replacement Pinto deathtrap on the cheap? And I would have never loved another Pinto the way I loved that one.
And had to fly back and forth to Texas for holidays. Which pissed me off. I like that drive.
@cranky1950 I was afraid the screw/washer combo would destroy the tire that I had paid big bucks for six months earlier. You can see from the photo that it was riding above the tread.
If the cloud launch went off, i slept thru it.
YouTube for me I guess.
I blame @Cranky1950-Goat.
@f00l Yes, definitely my fault that you got into your Lone Stars last nite.
@f00l I got up for it and my day went to crap from there. So maybe sleeping in was a good thing?
@sammydog01 Hey don’t encourage her, soon she’ll just lay around eating bon bons and talk to her poodle while watching Jerry Springer and Judge Hatchett.
@cranky1950
Hey! I can dream!
@cranky1950 Sounds good to me.
Got a physically big box today with stuff in it.
The reason for the size is because of a 24"x36" canvas poster.
Marvel Comics Retro: The Amazing Spider-Man Comic Book Cover No.70, Wanted!
While places are selling it for a decent amount (Allposters is selling it for $129.99), unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to sell it for that necessarily (hence the blame).
I blame you
@denboy@cranky1950 that the supporting middle back beam came separate from the frame, and even when I put it back in, only 2 nails (on one edge) went in, since the other end of the beam has a slight cracked off piece, and even if I glued them together, I wouldn’t be able to get the nail in.@PlacidPenguin Have pics of the backside? I might have some ideas for repairs (that do not involve duct tape … or duck tape.)
@narfcake
On its own, the condition is fine for me.
Should probably decide what I’m gonna do with it before I think about fixing it.
@narfcake Did she send you pix of her caboose?
@cranky1950 Wasn’t necessary.

@cranky1950 A recent family outing has left me with two blames for you:
We got takeout from an awesome place, and went to a nearby brewery we like with the food. Afterwards, a family member handed me a bag and said to take it with me- apparently you made me not hear it right, and I dropped the bag with boxes in the trash on the way out.
Then, upon entering the vehicle, I learned I was actually supposed to bring the bag with me as it had leftovers, so I went back to the trashcan and pulled out the bag.
When we got home, it was discovered that, thanks to you, I had pulled the wrong bag- it was the trash bag, not the food bag.
Thanks for all of that @crankygoat1950!
@dashcloud Well just goes to show you that one persons trash is another person’s food. Or maybe it’s You shouldn’t drink and schlep food or something.
@cranky1950 appears to be AWOL translocating his life. (He should serve out the weekend.) It’s still his fault that the lamp I was rewiring (like Mom taught me) had a plastic socket which shattered as soon as I started, sending shards everywhere. Blame!
@OldCatLady Oopsie
@cranky1950 I’m kinda here but really sore. There is a truckload of stuff in the front yard that is gonna sit there until tomorrow. This getting old shit is truly annoying.
@OldCatLady Well I hope after a trip to Home Despot you have a truly enlightening experience.
@cranky1950 Electrifying, even? I already had a complete kit, but it was the wrong color, of course. Go rub some arnica on your sore muscles, like a good goat.
10 more hours
@cranky1950 What if they forget?
@cranky1950
We’ll try to make sure you are plenty cranky about it.
@narfcake forget what???
@cranky1950 Oh, I dunno …
@dave @thumperchick
@cranky1950 Oh no you don’t. My term ended on Friday 30 Sep, and that damned goat badge stuck with me until noon on Sunday, 2 Oct.
@OldCatLady That’s because you’re so special.
@cranky1950
How long will that Goat smell take to wear off, you think?

@crankygoat1950 I blame you for not acknowledging the blame I posted earlier.
@dashcloud You really want me to acknowledge dumpster diving?
It’s been fun
@cranky1950 Try posting after midnight, and see whether that goat badge is still tied to your tail.
ok
Nope
@cranky1950 That’s not fair. Fine, pack up and move house. How about a nice house in Canada so we can come visit?
@OldCatLady I wish I could they won’t take me either.
