Their recall announcement makes no mention of any remedy being offered for the loss of product resulting from the recall. That might be due to the product being past the best-by date, but there’s no explanation at all. However, since the date of the sale on Meh was March 15th, if the ones supplied are from the lot that’s been recalled (0522) you should be able to use the Meh 90-day warranty to get a refund from meh.com/support. Check that lot number as per the info in the link on Julie’s website: Recall info PDF
I have 2 boxes left of the 12 boxes that I originally bought. I just hope that I didn’t cause harm to the friends that I passed them out to. Mine are the specified Lot #0522
Also 2 boxes were eaten this past Sunday, 11 days after the Recall was announced by the manufacturer. I understand that notifications take time, but it would have been nice to know earlier.
The press release was 5/10 and meh sat on this info for two weeks. Agreed, $10 is not sufficient.
What was the nature of the ‘metal’ was it a screw? a shard of a piece of equipment? Who was the supplier, and how many other brands of similar expired granola bars without recalls are around ?
@caffeineguy You assume Meh saw the press release the instant it was published in order to sit on it for two weeks.
@callow According to the release from Julies, they ‘notified their customers’ which should have included meh
@caffeineguy @callow Unless meh got them from a third party. Product can change hands many times before it gets to the consumer.
@caffeineguy @callow @Willijs3 I get the impression that some of their snacks derive from a distributor that services a lot of convenience stores. I know that back in the late 80s, a local distributor would occasionally have job lots of snacks that were improperly delivered that could be had dirt cheap if you knew who to ask. Sometimes, they had gotten a bit warm in transit due to a failure of the refrigeration on the trailer.
I believe we’ve eaten only three of our 12 boxes. Hey, Meh, that leaves $26.99 you owe me as a straight refund, not $10 credit on a future purchase.
@obxer We also have only emptied two boxes. The odds of ordering from Julie’s and using a $10 credit is maybe 10%.
At this point, I feel compelled to draw a parallel with crunchy frog. Or, more appropriately, spring surprise.
On the lighter side, the box’s labeled ingredient list doesn’t list “metal”, but the nutrition does claim to satisfy the MDR for iron.
On the serious side, Julie’s stated it initiated the voluntary recall “after a consumer reported to us the presence of a foreign object metal in one of these bars”.
Note, “a customer”, as in ONE. Not dozens, or several, or even two. Who’s to say it wasn’t just a piece of one of that customer’s dental fillings? (I’ve had that happen.)
My immediate question is did that customer also have their lawyer do a contact? If so, I’d be very suspicious of that report.
I’ve eaten dozens of those bars from my order and have noted nothing extra in the bars (though they are pretty dry IMO and taste a bit too healthy). My teeth are VERY sensitive to encountering certain metals in my mouth. E.g., I have trouble with chewing gum if there is the slightest trace of the tin foil wrapper with it.
TL;DR.
I’m not concerned by this recall. YMMV.
But I will use the Meh coupon with a clear conscience.

I’d personally be more concerned about the recall they had a couple years ago over salmonella issues. But those issues are apparently past.
Please show me any other retailer offering a coupon or money back out of their own pocket for a product recalled by the manufacturer.
@callow My grocery chain gives full refunds for anything recalled https://www.wegmans.com/news-media/product-recalls/
@caffeineguy That’s great to know!
The recall info on the few items I checked said the manufacturer was offering a refund or replacement. I wonder if they refund items that the manufacturer simply says throw it away.
Agree! I purchased two cases and have eaten less than 3 of the boxes.
@pbirgel I generally prefer to eat the bars and just recycle the boxes. While they do have fiber, they just don’t taste all that good.
I still have 4 boxes of Dark Chocolate, and 5 boxes of Cinnamon Vanilla Bean! And I do have the recalled lot # 0522.
They are actually pretty good tasting and still not stale at all. I just contacted Meh support to see about the 90-day Meh warranty.
