Join Team Meh. and help people around the World. (Unofficial)
34I do not know how many people have heard of Kiva.org. It is a great organization I have been participating in for a few years. It really is a great cause.
They are a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.
You are loaning money, not donating it. They have a 99% repayment rate, and all of my loans to date have been repaid at 100%. You can pick who you want to make a loan to: particular countries, women, men, types of businesses (even goat farms), etc. When the loan is repaid you can choose to take your money out, or loan it again (yes). The great thing about being on a team is that you can see what loans other team members are making. Help them finance a particular loan or decide as a team who to help.
I have started Team Meh. to which you can become a part here: http://www.kiva.org/invitedto/Meh/by/mark16507974

And I will sweeten the pot. The first 5 people who join and make a loan of $25 or more on Team Meh., I will add another $25 to that loan.
I've checked out Kiva before.
I'm very low income these days, but if I can use PayPal, I'm in. Thanks, @mfladd.
Umm, do they take PayPal?
@KDemo I am not sure about that. But I completely understand. Even if you can't do it, thank you so much for considering it :)
@mfladd - Looks like I have to join and click all the way through to find out. Aaaand, the answer is yes!
And done. It should display my name as 'J'.
@KDemo (you beat me too it) Actually, it appears that Kiva does accept Paypal. I have had a revolving account with them for so long I couldn't remember.
@kDemo You are awesome. kD just made a loan to:
Frank
Zambia
Frank received a loan from J to purchase ICT educational resources which will help the children at Sun-Spring school receive life-changing quality education using modern education technology.
I have already added $25 dollars to that loan! Thanks for being #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And you can see by the picture of my kids under the loan that I did.
and while I am starring my own post (which I despise), I am starring @kDemo for her contribution!
^ i starred that
@mfladd - Oh, such adorable children. Thanks for starting the team, and for matching the contribution. Good thought.
@katylava Thanks!
You know what. I will up the ante again. I seem to remember a conversation concerning Meh.com that it was not only about the deals, or how much we make each day - but it was about the community. So, besides matching the loans of 5 community members (4 now - @kDemo you are awesome). I will also match $25 for any loan that is made by the first 5 members of the Mediocre Labs staff.
@mfladd Fantastic idea. I'm in. Just added a contribution to the Zambia school project.
Unofficial Team Meh.
@AnnaB Thanks for being #2!!!!!!!! (people should also think of adding a pic so we can identify each other). Frank in Zambia is now fully funded so I can not add my $25. Pick another project of you choice and I will fund that.
We also had another meh'er who contributed but has not stepped forward. Thank you for being #3!
Samoa
Annie received a loan from "M" to buy fabric paint, brushes, stencils, rollers, rolls of material, and gloves. Thank you, "Miss Anonymous"!
Annie is also now fully funded, so I can't add funds. Poke me and tell me what other project you would like funded.
@mfladd just add where you see fit, please. This was a good thing you started 😄
@KDemo & @AnnaB Congrats, the Meh. team was of the top 5 contributing teams (out of 41) to Frank in Zambia :
http://www.kiva.org/lend/888669
Look at the bottom of the page.
@mfladd - Awesome for Frank and his school & kids. Hope this team keeps growing.
@KDemo So do I.
So you've checked this out to make sure the money is really going where they say? Wouldn't want to be funding some crazy con artist!
@emt305 Yes, this is very Legit (but check it out yourself) Since Kiva was founded in 2005: 1,297,136 Kiva lenders $712,390,700in loans 98.72% repayment rate We work with: 296 Field Partners 450 volunteers around the world 85 different countries
@mfladd Cool! I'll check it out!
@emt305
@emt305 - I linked Charity Navigator in my post above: "I've checked out Kiva before."
@KDemo hah, beat me to the Charity Navigator link! Very few "charities" are rated as highly as Kiva, including some big name examples. We've been running all charities we consider thru CN for years. For repeat donations it is worth checking every year since the ratings change.
@KDemo is the link being removed by someone? Again: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12978
Thanks, @RedOak, I use the site extensively as well. Invaluable when considering who deserves your donation.
Contributed in honor of meh. I think I'm #5. I already contribute to Kiva though, so match #6's $25 and I'll match #7's $25.
@vonjon :) you are frick'in awesome. Thank you. Now I just have to keep track.
Kiva.org has a Charity Navigator of 96.90 out of 100.
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12978
Thanks to @KDemo for this important point. I re-posted since I didn't see it show up.
Would love to donate, but for now I can only applaud your phenomenal efforts. Great job!!!
@somf69 Don't worry about about it. The fact you took the time to read the thread is enough.
Ok, here we go. "T" with the Irk pic - Love it! loaned to Ursilina. Ursulina is 67 years old and lives in Corrales, Jimenez, Misamis Occidental. She is widowed with five adult children.
For her means of living, Ursulina has been engaged in a dressmaking, pillow and curtain making business for 8 years already. She earns approximately 4,000 PHP (Philippines pesos) each month doing this type of business activity. She has requested a loan to be used in purchasing additional cloth, threads and accessories for her pillow, curtains and dressmaking business. Ursulina has been a member of PMPC for almost eight years. In the future, Ursulina hopes to establish her own dress shop.
She is also fully funded now and I can't do that one. Send me another.
@Vonjon (who is awesome because he also said he match someone) and "R" loaned Piedad who is 48 years old. She grew up in the countryside and in order to obtain economic income, she has dedicated herself to farming and the wages of farm labor. Piedad is separated from her husband so she lives with her four children who are adults. Piedad has been dedicated for thirty years to planting products that are found on the land where she lives. She is requesting the money from the loan to buy fungicides, fertilizer, and to pay to rent the land where she plants. Piedad says farming is what lives and has gotten her children ahead and she will keep doing it to buy a little house in the future.
But she is now also fully funded. @ Vonjon just look for someone to match and I promise I will match every cent I have promised here.
@mfladd Wow that was fast. Ursilina was only 50% funded when I picked her. How about Dali in Georgia, and if that is funded before you get there, then just add it where you see fit. Thanks for doing this!
@Trillian Yea, wondering myself. A couple of the loans had some dollars to go, but then *poof^, fully funded. Inquiring minds want to know.
@Trillian believe it or not there are two Dalis in Georgia..you pick. I owe you :)
@mfladd the one with only a few hours left to go. Hurry!
@Trillian Look at our team page. It is done. Thank you.
@mfladd I see it! I hope she gets the rest before the deadline. Thanks again!
@Trillian you will be glad to know Dali was fully funded.
Well I joined. Guess I was #6, and made a loan of $25.
What now?
@rkwilcox if you did it under Meh. and you see your loan the person was probably already funded (I am seeing everyone funded). Pick another and tell me and I will fund it.
@mfladd My loan went to Cruz Piedad
@rkwilcox Yes, fully funded. Pick another deserving person and I will see it done (in the morning, I need sleep).
Ok, some are probably annoyed. So I will not post anymore lengthy descriptions of the people we have loaned to. I just wanted people unfamiliar with this site to understand what they do. Keep it coming Meh. Oh yea, and of the 4 loans we did. We were a Top 5 Team on all of them (insert @hollboll fist pump pic :)
@mfladd for the record, I wasn't annoyed and found them helpful
@mnchick27 Thanks. :)
@mfladd I’m work mnchick. I love reading these!! I only get paid once a month so all my expendable income tends to be gone by the 5th. But I’m in for next month!
@mfladd WITH. really swype? Work? ?
@ivannabc @mfladd We can probably start a GoFundMe to fix your swype…Or mehbe try responding to a post less than 3 YEARS OLD.
@mfladd @therealjrn yeesh. I didn’t notice that it was an old post until well after i posted but thanks for making me feel stupid about it again hours after the fact. But point taken. I’ll be sure to limit my comments on any other threads for the future.
@ivannabc Haha…I have done it before too. No worries. You can join the team anytime without having to lend until you wish to. We would love to have you. @therealjrn was just poking you in fun (post away
@ivannabc @mfladd Indeed! I was just joshing! Please feel welcome!
@narfcake Seeing that your reign is coming to an end and you have been my very first goat (and a good one) I would like to make a loan in your honor for anyone you see fit here. Just let me know :)
@mfladd How about helping to buy a goat in narfcake's honor? http://www.kiva.org/lend/876793
@einrad Yes!, I will put in $25. Done. Are you able to participate? Thanks for the post. @narfcake this is your goat. (well maybe not the one pictured, since he wants to buy another)
@mfladd Of course I'll chip in to help fund a successor to @narfcake :)
@narfcake You should know that "S" and "M" (yes I know know how that sounds) also have loaned money to this project for YOUR goat! They are awesome.
@mfladd I matched the $25 I promised on this one.
Great idea! I just joined and found two projects to fund.
@einrad Thank you. I just added $25 to Henry. Who just wants to buy meat, flour, eggs, salt, cheese, and cooking oil for preparing fried foods. We can't even imagine.
Great idea! In for $25 for now.
Update: A new loan was started by a new member M....Y, and backed by another. Thank you for joining and I will be matching this (done).
Sanavbar is a bright woman. She was born in the southern part of Tajikistan in 1993. She is living in the district with her family. She is married and her husband is an emigrant. She is a goal-oriented, responsible and patient person. She is a student at a medical institute. Additionally she works at an AID organization. She has a dream to continue her studies and get higher education. She appealed to IMON, asking for financial support to pay her higher education costs. She awaits Kiva lenders' kindness and hopes to get a higher education.
@Narfcake's retirement goat project has the largest number of backers - just reached 6! We are also the top team backer for the goat. Scroll to the bottom:http://www.kiva.org/lend/876793.
But Jose still has $75 to go to get his goat.
We have a membership of 13 members, have totaled 19 loans for a total of $550 dollars. We have also made the Top 5 team status on all 9 loans we have made - We Are Meh! And in the business category we rank #7 for new users this month.
Some members I know, others are showing anonymous and have not posted here. But who cares - you are all incredible and thank you! Let's keep it up :)
@mfladd The goat is funded!
@mikey that is fantastic!
I funded Christine from Kenya, and I deliberately chose a program that does not have a perfect default or delinquency rate. I mistrust areas and projects that are always repaid on time, with complete success and shiny happy people. If people are truly in dire need, and if living conditions are desperate, some projects will fail, no matter how carefully they are administered. The Kenyan inflation rate guarantees that the project must make 6% every year just to break even; anything over that is the true - okay, I'll shut up.
@OldCatLady Thank you so much for joining the team! And I do understand about your concerns. I even sent Kiva an email concerning loan rates by some microfinance companies. You can learn more about it on the site. But I will trust their near perfect score on Charity Navigator. I have also added $25 for Christine. 3 other members have also jumped on board!
@mfladd In countries where corruption and bribery are the rule, anything that gives people hope is to be encouraged. Context is everything.
@OldCatLady true, true. I should clarify that the email I sent was probably almost two years ago while researching Kiva. The response was quite long and spoke about how they work with what micro-finance ccompanies they can. The companies are continually scrutinized and Kiva has even parted ways with a few of them.
@mfladd Christine is fully funded! Thank you all so much.
@OldCatLady I went with Christine, too! (3rd, I think?) I also poked around the numbers for a bit of reality, first.
@Thumperchick You are also awesome. Pick a worthy individual and I will back them in your name.
@mfladd Thanks! You pick :)
@OldCatLady In some communities, if one person defaults (or is about to default), the rest of them "kick in" what that person owes. They have a 100% repayment rate as a whole, even though am individual project here or there didn't pan out.
I swear it said Christine was fully funded. Now she's 76% funded. No idea what's going on. Should have taken a screen shot.
In honor of @Thumperchick I have started a loan to the Chimwemwe Group - Malawai.
Each member of this group receives a loan:
Ours is: Emmie is 36 years old, married and the mother of three children, one of whom attends school. She and some of her relatives try to provide for her family by selling tea by the side of the road. Despite this business, she still faces a number of challenges, and would like to get a loan in order to open a grocery store where she can sell assorted items. Her dream is to provide uniforms, notebooks and school fees to her children in addition to the adequate amount of food she has for them now.
The last person of this group to receive a loan was: Silira is a 42-year-old woman. She has seven children and looks after seven orphans (God bless her for that!). She sells utaka (small fish) to people within her trading center.
@mikey Don't think I didn't notice your contribution. Thank you! :)
This is a wonderful idea. I just loaned Lynn from the Philippines $25 to buy more fish to sell. Hopefully she's successful!
@sneakydave You are a wonderful Meh'tizen!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome :)
@sneakydave She already is! Two other Meh team members jumped board to help!
thanks for suggesting this. i'm now part of team meh (i feel so special).
first loan:
Rocio Del Pilar
Oyotún - Chiclayo, Peru Food | Bakery
Rocio is 46 years old, is single, and lives with her family in the district of Oyotún, in a rural area where life is quiet and the inhabitants make a living in agriculture, trade and animal husbandry, located in the Chiclayo province in the Lambayeque region on the northern coast of Peru.
She makes a living by making pastries, cakes and pies, and has more than 10 years of experience in the business, which is located in her own home. She is requesting this loan in order to equip and maintain the infrastructure of her business. She will use this investment to offer better products to her customers, and therefore be more productive and efficient in her business. With this, she hopes to be able to satisfy the diverse preferences and needs of the customers in her area, which will generate higher profits that will improve her quality of life.
@annwat And your help is appreciated by all of us! You Rock!
I have joined team Meh! Do previous loans I have made not carry over? I've already made 27 loans on Kiva.
@Collin1000 There are a few of us like that here. No, some people are actually on multiple teams and split their loans , But I exclusively loan for Team Meh now. Previous loans are always in your profile but they don't count to our team.
@mfladd Ah, darn. I never even knew Kiva had teams until now.
Done! Leigh Ann over there, I think.
@Trin Thank you sooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!
I'm in and made my first loan. And the team is up to 27 members -- nice job people of meh, and especially @mfladd!
@pitamuffin Thank you for joining, and loaning!!!!!!!!!!!! You are too nice. But I am just the honorary captain of the ship, everyone here is the wonderful crew that makes it sail!
@pitamuffin I also just matched your loan. Thanks again!
Kenya: Margaret is 39 years old, married to Henry and she supports a family of 8 family members. She has been a dairy farmer for the last 2 years and the business earns her an income of KES 9,000 per month. She has applied for her first loan of KES 25,000 from Vision Fund Kenya to purchase a dairy cow for increased milk production and supply to clients. She plans to use the anticipated profits to repay the loan and educate her children. Her hope is to be financially stable.
@ JonT Is there anyway we can get our team logo for this thread, and for future updates?
I promise I won't send you anymore Patriots stuff.
@mfladd I don't think he was properly summoned. Let's try again: @JonT?
@pitamuffin thank you. I was in such a hurry, I didn't even notice.
I just joined and sent my first loan to Davit:
Davit has requested credit for the purpose of building a greenhouse. The new business will be an additional source of the income for the family, which will allow them to combat the poverty in which they live.
Great idea and a great cause.
@olddognewtricks Thank you! You are a Rock Star!
@olddognewtricks Just so you know it is not showing up under Team Meh. Did yoou choose out team first?
so the microfinance interest rates seem like a total bummer here, but Kiva Zip lets you lend at 0% interest... so does team meh extend thereabouts?
@Lotsofgoats Yes, a couple of years back I emailed about the interest rates. They sent back a lengthy reply about how it works and it is what it is in different parts of the world. They scrutinize these lenders often and have let a few go in the past. Zip I need to look at more because I have never used it. But thanks for doing the due diligence about loans like I did.
@mfladd yep, the problem with the rates being what they are is that this is supposed to be a charitable service, but 30% interest is a business and not a charity. obviously that's not entirely on Kiva, but it's still a pretty broken system.
I'm trying to find out more about Zip as well, because 0% interest with only a slightly worse repayment rate sounds like there's a catch. let me know if you find anything of interest!
@Lotsofgoats I hear you. I am still trust Charity Navigators Highest rating. Without Kiva these people proabable would not get loans at all to better their lives. Let me know what you find out about Zip.
@mfladd so it looks like the biggest way Zip changes the equation is by using paypal, which shrinks operational costs a ton
the other thing is that for foreign loans (only Kenya atm), the lender assumes all risk in exchange fluctuations and Kiva takes all profits from exchange fluctuations to pay costs (and also for legal reasons)
it sounds like a better system for borrowers so I think I'm in on that
@Lotsofgoats Sounds good. Thanks for looking into it and becoming active :)
@mfladd After doing a lot more digging, while the concept is good the fact that it limits loans to Kenya and the U.S. at this time is something I don't like.
@mfladd true, but it's still in an alpha stage. hopefully they can expand upon the model.
@Lotsofgoats I agree, it would be great to cut out most of the micro-lenders.
@Lotsofgoats That bothered me when I first started using Kiva a few years back. But these are small loans that means admin costs are high and then there is the lender default/political/currency risks.
There is no other way the lenders can get loans.
AND when you get repaid, you can lend it again.
(You have option to take your money out) But if I were just donating to help someone that's it, stops there. This way that same donation gets recycled again and again. More people are helped.
I like that part.
ps no need to donate to Kiva if you don't want. They add a suggested donation based on your loan, but you can make it zero or a lower/higher amount if you like. Any donation to Kiva directly( not the loan) is tax deductible in case that matters to anyone.
Do you have a referral email?
@Einherjar13 Thanks you for asking (I think you mean you are joining and they are asking who sent you), but no. Just join us on Team Meh, and let me know :)
@Einherjar13 - You can use the link in the original post :-)
I've been a member of Kiva for a couple of years and love it! I joined the team but I will have to wait until my credit balance gets a bit higher before I can do another loan. Great idea!!
@stardate820926 You are awesome. it's great to have you aboard. It will better in the future to have loans spread out. There is only so much everyone can do :)
Update: when I started Team Meh. for Kiva.org I promised to match 10 loans. While I was unable to match a couple because they were already funded. I have kept my promise and matched 9 loans and just began 1 more. I made this loan because a group - Pearson is doubling the impact of your loans. For every loan you make to their identified projects (list below), Pearson - a business group will double it! Here are the loans they will match: http://www.kiva.org/lend#/?perPage=20&countries%5B%5D=&matched=on
My loan was made to: Rosemary is a 30-year-old charcoal trader, living with her husband and three children in the Kilombero district. She pays for her dependents’ school and medical expenses through the charcoal business which she has been running in her village for the past four years. This has also allowed her to support needy students by donating 500 shillings per month to them for the past five years.
She requests a Kiva loan to increase charcoal in her store.
Rosemary plans to use the profits earned to cover household expenses for her family.
I am going to update the amazing progress we have all made as a team in the next couple of days. Thanks you all :)
@mfladd
Rosemary is showing fully funded. This group thing may catch on. I've loaned - lent- whatever- money to Haruna. http://www.kiva.org/lend/883209
@OldCatLady Thank you again, my feline friend. Whats great was your loan was already matched by the Pearson Team. Details of your loan below.
Haruna is a 25-year-old, entrepreneur and volunteer Camfed Learner Guide, living with her parents in the Kilombero district. Volunteering as a Learner Guide, she teaches life skills to her students in the nearby secondary school. Her lessons focus on effective communication and on building her students’ confidence. As she currently doesn't have her own business, Haruna is now requesting a Kiva loan in order to launch a venture in the local market by opening her own small market stall. She will use the loan to buy products with which to launch her own market stall. Haruna plans to use the profits she earns to build herself a strong house and support her daily expenses. The interest on her “social-interest” loan will be repaid through her weekly two and a half hours of volunteering, which are so valuable for Camfed’s younger students.
@OldCatLady I thought you would like to know Haruna is fully funded. That is what is great about matching loans they fund very quickly.
So... Since these are loans are there any returns on investment? Or do you just recycle the same $25 while paying Kiva $3.75 each go around?
@DrunkCat You do not make any returns. Also you don't have to pay Kiva $3.75. They just ask that, Hit the edit button and change it to 0.00 if you wish. I usually give them a dollar for operational costs. When, and if the loan is repaid, you can pull your money out. It is a way to help people make a better life for their families.
@mfladd Thanks for the clarification.
@mfladd I have a second repayment.. so cool!!!
@mikibell Congrats!
Hey, I just got my first repayment installation! Is it weird that I'm super excited for farmer Christine in Kenya? Like, GO CHRISTINE! You make it happen!
@Thumperchick Super!
@Thumperchick So did I, and found mysef wondering what harvest season is like there. I'm very glad for her, and thanks to everyone who is part of Unofficial Team Meh. It feels good.
@JonT can we get a change in the title so that people know this is - "Unofficial" Team Meh Thank you :)
are we going to do a "group" loan drive again soon?
@annwat I'm going to wait until my loan is repaid and then roll it over to the next person.
@annwat I wonder whether @mfladd has any updates on the Kiva lenders - those who charge higher interest rates in underserved regions. I understand the risk factor. I was hoping that Kiva has been able to find some way to ease the burden on the borrowers.
@OldCatLady let me see what I can find (may take some time as I have to go out of town for business for a few days).
@OldCatLady I will be on the road soon, but when I have a chance I am going to send an email to Kiva asking them a number of questions. I have done so in the past about interest rates and they did respond but I no longer have that email.
@annwat sorry for the delay. There are probably a number of people who will wait until loans are repaid. But there are also a number of people who back loans regularly.
How about you take a couple of days and find a loan you would like to back and post it here. I will then take it and send it out to the entire team by Kiva mail. I will also back it :)
@OldCatLady Many many questions sent to Kiva. Now we just wait for a response.
@mfladd Thanks for taking lead on this.
And we have two new team members who joined yesterday. You guys are awesome!!!!!!! I don't know usernames yet.
I know one new member - @Katherine - Meh staffer!!! She has rock star status, so treat her as such Mediocre Labs.
2nd member joining is (drum roll please) @ceagee
Yea!!!!
@OldCatLady (OTC) plus anyone else interested.
Reply from Kiva.
Thanks so much for your email, and I'm so glad that you're passionate about Kiva and your team! It's active and curious lenders like you that allow Kiva to have such a broad impact. I have included a lot of information below about interest rates. However, please let me know if I don't fully address any of your questions.
We often get questions about the interest and fees charged by our Field Partners, as the rates on Kiva's website often seem higher to lenders than what they're accustomed to seeing. The average interest rate and fees charged is noted using the “Average Cost to Borrower” field, and this helps cover the high operational costs of facilitating microloans and providing services to borrowers. At Kiva we believe that sustainability is critical to reaching more families and communities around the world, and charging interest to borrowers enables our Field Partners to cover their costs of providing a service, while working to achieve self-sustainability.
Because our Field Partners don’t have to pay interest to Kiva for funds provided by Kiva lenders, Kiva loans provide Field Partners with the flexibility to reach more communities and more rural or underserved populations. Most Kiva Field Partners do charge borrowers interest in some form, however Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Field Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, Kiva partners only with organizations and microfinance institutions that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked and underserved.
We also require that all of our Field Partners endorse the Smart Campaign’s Client Protection Principles (smartcampaign.org/about/smart-microfinance-and-the-client-protection-principles), an industry-wide initiative to establish a baseline for responsible microfinance (or explain why they’re not). So far, the vast majority of our partners have endorsed the principles, helping safeguard borrowers against over-indebtedness and ensure transparent pricing for borrowers.
So how do we ensure that our partners are adhering to the "responsible pricing" principle? Each year, we review our Field Partners’ audited financial statements and calculate the return on assets (ROA) and portfolio yield, adjusted for inflation. We then evaluate our partnerships to ensure that there is a sound justification for each relationship. Our Field Partners with the highest portfolio yields and return on assets, in addition to those with a real ROA above 5% and a Field Partner Premium (Field Partner Premium = portfolio yield adjusted for inflation - financial expense) above 30%, are subject to additional scrutiny, such as collecting compensation information for executive staff, reviewing loan schedules and calculating APR on all loan products. Based on this information, Kiva has chosen to exit relationships with partners where the justification for their pricing could not be established.
A couple of other things to consider when thinking about interest rates:
As many of our partners serve communities in rural areas, the labor of distributing and collecting loan payments can add to the organization’s operational costs.
Comparisons of interest rates charged by commercial banks in underdeveloped countries and interest rates charged in developed countries can be misleading. A developed banking system can provide funds at lower rates, and when a bank facilitates larger loans, a lower proportion of costs are needed to cover transactional expenses. Microfinance is an expensive business, which is essentially the reason small loans are not provided by large banks.
Developing countries also typically have high inflation rates which need to be factored into the interest rates charged. For example, an interest rate of 20% per year in a country where inflation was 22% per year would not cover costs. The interest rate charged by the institution would need to be greater than 22% in order to simply cover the cost of inflation, let alone other operational costs.
In addition to the average cost to borrower, we list our Field Partners' return on assets (ROA) on their partner pages (kiva.org/partners) so that lenders can see how much money the Field Partner is making based on the loans they’re disbursing. ROA is a measure of profitability, and currently, our partner average a negative ROA.
For additional information about interest rates in the microfinance industry, check out: mftransparency.org/
Hopefully this clarifies things and fully addresses your questions. However, if I didn't, please follow up. Thanks again, and have a good rest of your week!
Best wishes,

Loans that change lives
Team Meh. (unofficial). It has been a while since I have posted but I wanted to let everyone know that Kiva is having a Double your Impact Deal where your $25 loan will be matched.
I know I have enough repayments to make two more loans. Here is the link to Matched Loans if interested:
Double Your Impact Kiva Loans
Ok, literally in the time it took me to post this all the double your impact loans were fully funded. Oh well, I will still look for two more to fund. Sorry about that.
Also, anyone new reading this and is already on a Kiva team, please consider coming over to ours. We are way cooler!
@mfladd it's ok. good reminder to check my account.
@mfladd thanks for the reminder to use my repayment credit. It wasn't quite enough for 2 but I will do another one soon.
Thanks for bumping this, @mfladd. - My guy has become anonymous and has not started paying back. He's a little delinquent on his first payment. I choose to believe the money went for the stated purpose. I don't regret loaning the money, but I would hesitate to loan again.
@KDemo I see that. I see that is was also categorized as an experimental loan. Sorry, to hear this. I have had 100% of all of my loans paid back and current loans are all up to date with repayment. I am on my 19th loan. You may want to stay away from the experimental type. Please don't let this dissuade you from loaning again.
@mfladd - Guess I never noticed that qualification. You're doing a good thing,
Edit - I still don't see where it says experimental. It would be good to know where to look.
Edit 2 - It looks like the lender is rated experimental. I think I did see that, but there were reassurances.
@KDemo I'm on my 10th loan and have only had one end with a loss (3% of the total loan). I haven't done an experimental one though.
@mfladd I just lent (loaned?) for the first time! Exciting. Both of the ones I went with had double impact / anonymous matching.
@KDemo look to the bottom right column under - Field Partner Risk Rating
@becca Yea! And you picked team Meh! Thank you!!!! We have 41 team members now :)
@mfladd I was out of the country on the first go around, but just joined and funded $25. Thanks for leading the charge - I've been meaning to join for some time and this was the perfect reason to.
@v Welcome! And thanks for joining our team!
We now have 42 team members and have 68 loans!
I had about $14 from a loan payback, so I put a few dollars in and funded another person. However, I did it a couple of days ago, and I didn't notice the 'double' thing at that time. Darn, a sale and I missed it!
@OldCatLady Still appreciated! Yeah, there are certain foundations that commonly do x2 loans. I need to be better about posting them, but I don't always get an email about them.
@mfladd If you do it about this time of night, you might catch a few people watching...
@mfladd @OldCatLady I found an option in the search for loans section. You can check it along with your other search criteria and it will bring up the ones currently being matched. Not sure if that is helpful or not.
It's worth mentioning that while Kiva and other microfinance operations have shown to be a modestly effective means of lifting people out of poverty, there's a lot of smoke and mirrors in the experience they give you as a lender, which becomes apparent if you read the fine print.
Kiva describes itself as "person-to-person" microlending platform. The smiling faces and personal backgrounds of aspiring small-business owners on the site help you establish a strong emotional connection and feel that you're directly making a difference in someone's life. It's very compelling.
In reality, your contribution ends up a pool managed by a middleman in the country, typically a local bank. They charge interest on the loans (and keep it), and many have a dedicated writing staff that compiles questionnaire answers into the profiles you read on the site. By the time you see the recipients' names for the first time, they have often already obtained loans they applied for. The real lender uses the money from you to make up for deficits in their pool or to grow it (as they are already making a profit from interest).
That's just a harmless illusion, and I wouldn't entirely fault them for it. Except there's a real dark side that is also not shown to Kiva's customers: some of those lenders charge predatory interest rates, greater than 100%, and then fudge their numbers, which actually causes even worse poverty. Think "payday loans". This is part of the reason why the results of microfinancing have been mixed.
@trisk You did see the answer @mfladd got when he asked about such questions and other things right?
Kiva Interest Rate Questions
@trisk This question has been asked many times here and on other threads. And there are no perfect solutions for people in parts of the world that would not otherwise even be eligible for any type of loan to help them better their lives.
And @Dashcloud is correct that I reached out to Kiva about this and the answer they gave was posted earlier in this thread. It is has also been discussed how all charities have issues of some kind. How someone decides to help others is an individual decision and many here have done their research into Kiva before joining this team. In fact, many of our members are people who were already making Kiva loans but were unaware of a team platform.
Yes, I am back - just for this. I hold to my commitments. This thread - this team - is a commitment. In honor of the bygone November Goat - @christinewas I am making a $25 loan in her name.
She has chose the recipient:
Wilna, aged 48, has been a merchant for a dozen years. She sells secondhand clothing. Thanks to micro-loans, she has made a lot of progress in her business. She continues to request loans, since they enable her to avoid inventory shortages. Her wish is to open a savings account soon.
I am also making the same offer to 3 new members. Join the team and I will match the LOAN. In fact, there is an opportunity to double (x2) your contribution.
With these loans:
http://www.kiva.org/lend?sortBy=expiringSoon#/?perPage=20&sortBy=expiringSoon&countries[]=&matched=on
We have seen the haters here before... All charities have their issues. I am asking for sanctuary here. This is a good place with people trying to do good. Leave us this - please. If you need to bitch about kiva, please do it here:
uhttps://meh.com/forum/topics/kiva-org-team-meh--update-----may-31st-2015
(then I will be back to the meh lurking grave)
@mfladd I didn't post in the other threads because I wasn't in the forum for a few days around the time you left and I missed what went down and didn't think you'd see replies anyway. Now that you're in here and have said you're kinda lurking, I just wanted to say I'm sorry to see that you're not posting anymore. You are missed.
@mfladd Thanks, friend. I'll miss you here, but I'll always be
comfortedterrified knowing that you're out there watching us.@mfladd
Your post inspired me to go check my acct. and re-loan what had been paid back recently. Found some matching loans too. And yes, supported the one @christinewas picked. That's what a team does, eh?
And speaking of teams......
Well I don't even have to say anymore do I ;-)
@ceagee Did you expect less from me?
@mfladd Isn't that a bit of orange bra peeking out ? Like you know, a Denver fan would wear.
@PurplePawprints
Thanks.
@ceagee Thanks.
p.s. - I am the monster :)
@mfladd It says I have to be a "friend" to view it.
Whatever. I'm sure it was something very nice and wonderful and it's the thought that counts, eh?
I need some coaching advice.
give me a min . then check your email plse
@mfladd there it is. : )
just let me know who you loaned to, and I will match it (up to 3 - new members only).
@mfladd I just loaned to Rina Gladys. I did use your email as who referred me. You do good things, friend. C'mon, bring it on in, hug time!
@mfladd Since mine is now funded, I've found this gentleman. Gerardo
http://www.kiva.org/lend/986604
@jaremelz You have been matched. I can't even give you an evil gif because i care too much that you loaned...damn you!
@mfladd I'd suggest that you try using a nice one, but I get it, that just goes too far!
And again, thank YOU for being a force for such good in the world. It evens out the evil you do.
@jaremelz ack.
@mfladd I know, being nice kind of makes my head hurt.
@mfladd I'm already in bed, using a cranky tablet that barely lets me type, and NOW YOU POP BACK IN??? I can't log into Kiva till tomorrow, but I know I have some repayment credits. Tomorrow I'll contribute to Wilna. And I'm glad you're lurking, because the rude, crude and socially unacceptable voices are whispering, and if they erupt from my mouth, I know it's really you.
@OldCatLady I luv you too.
@mfladd Smiling. This is me, smiling as I go to sleep.
@mfladd
That looks like it would look good grilled in bbq sauce.
@mfladd Joined and contributed. Never heard of this, thanks for the info.
Your pick has been matched by me (and doubled on kiva) We have done good. Thank you.
@mehbee Welcome to the (unofficial ) meh kiva group/ team thing.
@ceagee Thanks. Nice to be part of a great group.
@mfladd Yeah, I figured if I was going to do it might as well pick one that would be matched. This late at night I really couldn't read through all the choices so I picked one that was almost funded. Sounded like a great group. Will be looking for another one next payday.
@mfladd Just went back and looked and that loan is 100% funded now!
@mehbee "bee"cause you helped. Too pun'y? Ok, stepping back from the puns.
@mfladd caused I bee-lieved in the cause!
@mehbee and you bee awesome!
Duck, everyone, @mfladd and @mehbee are taking a stab at bee puns
@jaremelz don't bee jealous.
@mfladd What a knockout
@mehbee You can filter through them all sorts of ways. I am trying to do different country every time. Brushes up on my geography ;-) Plus interesting to learn more about other people and places that way.
I even ran into a bee keeper once ;)
@jaremelz Aw come on, you know puns are all the buzz. Does that take the sting out of it for you?
@ceagee No way not a bee keeper?! I bet he had a hive of activity going on.(ok that was way lame)
never saw this until today, glad i was trolling the forum, so I joined the Meh team on Kiva, Yay aMeh.ricans!
@DMlivezey Thank you for joining. I matched your loan.
Hi,
I am thinking of joining...before I do, is there any way to do a loan a month (or every other month) but not have to pick who it goes to? I want to do this, but I just don't have the time to go through and pick someone. I would like to set it up for automatic payment (like my other charities) so it just goes out each time. I thank you in advance for any help.
@momcobb thank you for considering kiva. Here is what you requested.
http://www.kiva.org/about/supportus/monthly
If anyone is looking for another Kiva loan, I just got an email from them that if Nzara (someone I've funded) doesn't get an additional $350. in the next two days, her loan will expire and she won't get the money. http://www.kiva.org/lend/973589?_te=lew&utm_source=system&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=expiration_warning
@OldCatLady I got your back. Loan made :)
@OldCatLady I added to her loan, I'll advise my Kiva friends outside of Meh. too
@lajivzy Thank you.
Also you should let them know they can be on multiple teams.
@mfladd You still have your V card flying there. ;)
@OldCatLady @annwat also backed your loan. She is good doobie :)
@OldCatLady Aww hell, I'm in too.
@jaremelz well aren't you just sweet. Thanks.
@mfladd Sssh, that's my secret.
@jaremelz @mfladd first you leave then you put mildly appropriate gifs in your gif war. What's next flowers and chocolates?
@sohmageek This thread means too much to defile it with our past behaviors. And since he is only here to support his lovely kiva, you all are safe.
@jaremelz Not really, we just let you pretend it is.
@ceagee No..ack...I'm dark and evil, not sweet. Pfft.
This just happens to be a very good thing to give to, I hope it garners even more team members.
@jaremelz wink wink nod nod
Nzara has now been fully funded. Thanks to all who passed the word.
@OldCatLady That is excellent news!
Hi Team "unmehficial" Meh.
I thought I would give an update. We currently have 47 mehmbers with 111 loans made in over 32 countries.
Please check to see if you have Kiva credits to re-lend.
I have over a $100 to re-lend and will match anyone willing to become a new team member. I would love to see us reach 50 members. Please let me know you have lent so I can add funds to the person or group you are lending to.
Anyone willing to join please look for Team Meh. "unmehficial" before lending. Also do your due diligence before lending.
https://www.kiva.org/team/Meh
(for the Kiva haters - kiva doesn't help people, high interest rates, micro-lending, yadda yadda yadda - we have heard it all before and it has all been addressed in this thread so move on - thank you)
Thanks to all of the "47" for lending. @mfladd
@mfladd Thanks for the reminder! I have been repaid and need to re-lend!
Yes, those who are against it, move along, we get it. But if you're one of the folks who has been considering it, now is the time! You don't need to give away the whole stack, even a rocks.
@jaremelz You're Awesome!
@mfladd Thanks for the reminder, too. I thought I was keeping up, but I have quite a bit of credit (aka loans people have repaid) and It will go back out today. Watching BBC for reminders on where it can be most usefully placed today.
Had to share. Not making this up. Just loaned to woman named "Mehwish" . How could I not ? Link if want to join in.
@ceagee Done. I am in! Thanks for posting.
@ceagee Thanks for the link. I made a loan to her too.
@ceagee @hallmike Mehwish is fully funded! We are the #3 team contributing behind Hewlett Packard Enterprise and the HP foundation that jumped on it quick and threw in most of the loan money.
Don't know how I missed this but I have been lending with Kiva for 8 years and never had a problem or default. Just joined the team.
@hallmike Welcome to the team!
@hallmike Thank you! And, welcome aboard!
@hallmike Woohoo! The team just became so much cooler.
@jaremelz @hallmike Which was pretty hard to do considering the people already on the team.
Welcome.
@ceagee Exactly! The kick ass kids just added another awesome player to the team. I fancy the shit out of us.
@jaremelz @ceagee @mfladd Thanks! But I really have you all fooled.
@hallmike @mfladd @jaremelz
@hallmike Also, because you arenew to this team (not including your years of lending on kiva). Pick a loan you like. I will match it. Find something interesting :)
@mfladd Just used up all my credit on Mehwish.
@hallmike still pick one. I got you covered. Post it here.
@mfladd I would probably choose this one if I was lending again. Looks like it will help create jobs.
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1055190
@hallmike
Guillermo Lima, Peru
A loan to to purchase new production equipment that will provide 8,500 jobs for recyclers, 1,000 jobs for installers, and impact 950 low-income rural andean homes.
Done!
Just a reminder: if you wish, you can delete the 'donate to Kiva' fee in your basket.
@OldCatLady I usually lower it because I contribute to them through Amazon Smile.
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1064631
Maulupe is a 21-year-old mother with one child. She owns and operates a small business of selling elei printing materials at the market to earn a living.
Maulupe requested a loan to buy rolling materials, paint color, a paint brush, elei designs, containers, and a printing machine for her business.
Doubling for mother's day made me donate before last year's loan was fully paid..still a good feeling!
@mikibell Damn. I saw your post earlier, but just clinked on your link now. She needed one more loan. Put it in my basket and it was gone :(
Pick someone you would like me to loan to. It shall be done. Choose wisely :)
I just noticed that I have money to reallocate in loans to Kiva. I also noticed @ceagee just made a loan that still needs help. I did so. Please check your accounts. If you are interested here it is:
Ana Julia is an exemplary lady who, for four years, has worked in her own store. With the goal of increasing the number of sales in her business, she is requesting a loan of one million colones (1,000,000 CRC) for the purchase of merchandise that will permit her to increase her inventory and, thereby, improve her income, which her daughters depend on.
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1094921
We are 49 mehmbers strong and I thank you for being a mehmber of this team.
Also, if you have a certain loan that you would like to make for someone - I will back you. Just let me know. I have enough to back four more loans
@mfladd Done
@mfladd Done. I had some credit just sitting there anyway. I forgot to log in as Team Meh, though.
@mfladd @jaremelz @OldCatLady Thanks for joining me !
@OldCatLady Nope, you are showing as a lender of team meh.
Is there any way to log in to a Kiva site when shopping on Amazon Prime day (12 July) so they get part of the proceeds, or am I totally confused? Other organizations are begging me to use their links.
@mfladd Fine, so I have to tag you. There.
@OldCatLady if you go to http://smile.amazon.com there is a link under the search bar to set up the charity. When you shop Amazon, always go to that smile link and your charity will get a percentage of your purchase price.
Hey @mfladd … my loans are getting paid in full – are we going to be sponsoring someone???
@mikibell I just logged in and gave someone money for garden supplies.
@looseneck cool… do you have the link?
@mikibell https://www.kiva.org/lend/1298245
@looseneck So did I. Can we get Samoa lenders?
@OldCatLady @looseneck me three…
@mikibell @oldcatlady I love gardening and helping others grow.
/image thank you girls
@looseneck Me four, does this mean I don’t have to actually eat my vegetables tonight?
@therealjrn Yes! I’m eating apps at Friday’s. My salad hasn’t finished growing yet
@looseneck She’s already funded! That was fast, do they usually go that quickly?
@therealjrn I don’t know. It’s my first time.
@therealjrn When we, as a group, funded some teachers on a site that does that we managed to fully fund a bunch of them. if we start choosing individual projects, posting them, and then funding them we could make sure people were fully funded fairly quickly.
I looked at Cambodia, as that is where my daughter is from, and so many, many need basics just to farm. Poverty is still so high. And that is just one country… there are so many people and so many countries with so many basic needs. Makes me feel like my problems are small in comparison.
I don’t know why I didn’t do this before; I intended to, then it slipped. So when the thread came to life this week, I checked, and every prospect I saw mentioned in the topic was fully funded.
So I picked something that was about to expire and funded it.
Hi, y’all. Wish I had gotten here sooner.
@f00l
@mikibell
@f00l I’ve had a couple drinks. Do you want to pick another person before I sober up? I’m feeling generous and happy that my pick went from 0 to fully funded within hours
@looseneck
Hope you haven’t sobered up yet. A few posts down below this one, @Kawa and ppl are trying to find this project:
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1284841
So I just chipped in. You can too, even if you need to get drunk again in order to do it.
@Kawa’s post is here:
@looseneck
Ok I’ll try again and not get distracted.
@Kawa’s post is here:
https://meh.com/forum/topics/join-team-meh--and-help-people-around-the-world#592396a5e62a550954f2a027
@f00l Jose got funded before I woke up and got sober
/giphy who’s next?
@mfladd usually has some statistics. Where is he, anyway?
@OldCatLady
@mfladd seems to be taking a break. I hope that’s all this absence means, anyway.
I think he should be moving into the house he recently purchased about now, if he didn’t just finish moving. So perhaps he’s surrounded by unpacked boxes.
I really hope he’s ok. And I really hope he comes back around soon. I need the target practice.
@f00l I just want him to come back because I miss him. @mfladd - Shadowhunters and Wynonna Earp are back on, who am I going to discuss them with without you?
I’m glad this thread revived as well! I’ve just given $25 to Jose: https://www.kiva.org/lend/1284841 He’s getting matching as well, so even though he’s mostly not funded it shouldn’t be hard to get him to the finish line!
@Kawa Matched. Let’s get Jose funded!
@Kawa
Chipped in.
@Kawa Did it, I have been known to be a great supporter of grain products.
@Kawa looka like he’s funded now, well done!
So who is being funded next?
I donated to https://www.kiva.org/lend/1300539 via team Meh. If you’d like to join, there are matching funds…
@Yoda_Daenerys Ok
@Yoda_Daenerys Zoom! 100% funded
Thanks for funding her! She is from my kid’s country. My kid left there when she was 9 years 11 mo old.
@Kidsandliz that was fast, go Meh.!
@Kidsandliz and it’s hard to be on your own when you are 9 years 11 mo old.
@therealjrn Yup - she also went from the stone age to the space age in 36 hours as well. Also took her months to realize that there would be enough food. Every. Single. Day.
@Kidsandliz Trippy.
@therealjrn Conditions in Cambodia when she was there was poverty at a level I had never seen before. Made the families and kids in the feed the children ads look like they lived in relative luxury. That is why I started an NGO (with a Cambodian) there in 1999. I was in grad school at the time and some of my student loans went to it initially (while I don’t regret it in one sense, it is contributing to my financial problems now). Several orphanages, schools, a couple of wells, dental work for all the kids at school and in the villages, adult vocational training… I am really lucky it is more or less self running at this point in time. It is largely funded by someone from a foundation in England, the schools by an individual in England and the dental work by a family in Austria who go once a year and do the dental work.
@Kidsandliz Very interesting! What made your interest in Cambodia initially?
@therealjrn Saw my daughter on a waiting child list with no idea, initially, which SE Asian country she was from.
Taro root? Who doesn’t like taro root?
Has matching funds: https://www.kiva.org/lend/1300455
@therealjrn COOL! It is now funded!
Hey folks - thanks for just funding someone from my kid’s country (Cambodia)!
Saw some interesting stats for team meh - 54 members
https://www.kiva.org/team/Meh/impact
Who doesn’t like coffee? Who doesn’t like women in recovery? Who doesn’t like Rochester? (don’t answer that last one) I just donated in Team Meh’s name to:
Joy
Rochester, United States
A loan helps create jobs for women in recovery to operate the business themselves.
Has matching funds.
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1309249
@therealjrn Donated under our team! Love this team!
@therealjrn
Sorea from Cambodia is running a fruit stand and wants to buy more fruit for the stand. Matching available, at 27% with 9 hours left.
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1303434
@Kawa Yea! She is funded. Always like to see people funded in my child’s home country.
@mfladd
This is a good thing. And you started it.
So check in here, every once in a while.
OK, Mr AWOL?
@f00l Sorry, I see that when the activity picked up was a time I was really absent, and this post just found me moving into my new house. Sorry.
I got an email from PayPal earlier regarding a promotion they are having, where if you lend $25, then PayPal will give you another $25 to loan.
And no, this isn’t a free $25 to your PayPal account. The loan payback for the $25 credit goes to the PayPal fund created for this promotion to be lent to somebody else.
Promo info can be found here.
@mflassy what does @mfladd think? i think i am in…

@Yoda_Daenerys Your choice is at 100% the other one has 10 hours to go and is only 40% funded.
@Kidsandliz yikes! 40%?
i guess these aMeh.rican, Meh.xican and caMeh.dian Meh.tizens better get going!
Well hello there! I know I have been quiet here for quite a while - I apologize. I just posted this message to the team on Kiva:
Later, I will update everyone with ours stats on Kiva
@mfladd
@mfladd thx for the reminder, joined in, tell @mflassy i say hey!

Better not tell you now
I just loaned to this women’s group in Guatemala.
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1483765
@mfladd funded.
@RiotDemon You rock!
@mfladd I didn’t do anything. I just looked at it.
@RiotDemon You still rock
finished funding for this group - https://www.kiva.org/lend/1483771
but, sadly, my last loan is two months delinquent as regards repayment.
has anyone ever checked out the people in the u.s.a. that are asking for loans? maybe it’s just me but when i see their loan photo w/the clothing they are wearing, cars they are in/near and overall living conditions, i am totally turned off to loan them anything.
@annwat I loaned money to a US group of recovering addicts running a coffee shop.
@therealjrn i must have missed them - it seemed like everyone i looked at should have been loaning me money!
@annwat It’s called Coffee Connection in Rochester, NY
https://www.kiva.org/lend/1309249
@therealjrn oh yes, that looks like it was a good one to lend to!
I participated in Kiva a few years ago. There were a bunch of Russian (Siberian?) farmers who’d had their green houses crushed under an exceptionally heavy winter snow. They wanted loans to repair. I liked lending to them, because they already had an established business and the setback was through no fault of their own. I’ve lost that account, hopefully the money is going good use.
Meanwhile I went ahead and joined team Meh tonight and made a new loan to El Buen Sembrador-Cruz B Group to purchase agricultural supplies for his corn crop. It seemed kind of lyrical as I’m very immersed lately in my dumb farm game, planting lots of effortless virtual corn of my own.
Thanks for the impetus to do this. I can’t find any link to review my loan, so I’m not sure how we keep track.
@moondrake Thank you, @moondrake! Welcome to the team
According to my stats, I have a 0% delinquency rate.
Cool.
@therealjrn I had one that defaulted completely. First one ever. They said they had problems with the region and had to suspend activities in that area.
I love when I can sometimes look and we are one of the top teams lending for a loan. There are all these groups from major universities, businesses, etc, and then there is just our GREAT GoaT logo in the middle of them all
@mfladd Looks like we done did good:
@therealjrn I am glad it was a success.
@mfladd @therealjrn I love the name James-- might have named my son James, except it woulda been weird since that is my brother inlaw’s name.
Mf… I haven’t gotten back $25 yet, even though I have two loans out…hmm will have to see what happened there. But didn’t see your note until too late, sorry I missed the doubling. Will let you know when my funds get back to $25 and who I donate to!
Ok so technically this isn’t a loan, but a fundraiser. They need 1500 euro and are a third of the way there. I know the family through an international adoption forum and their Vietnamese adopted kids have been raising money through their schools to sponsor a handful of kids to continue in school past grade school (rural Vietnam). The parents founded a non-profit (they are in France). This is an ongoing project since 2014. If you feel like donating here is the url (more information there)
