Jan 5, 2018 Boat of Day
16Today’s Boat is the USCG Barque Eagle. In honor of the great job the Coast guard is doing during this storm to help out people, break ice, save boats, save lives, ect.
She was a war prize from WW2 , where she was one of the German naval sail training vessels , the Horst Wessel.
I have been lucky enough to have sailed on her for 1 day and to have gotten to climb her yards.

I’ve watched her under way in the (Norfolk) Harborfest Parade of Sail several times. What a beauty.

This is a good description of the vessel
Nice Wessel!
@CaptAmehrican In NYC in the 4th of July parade of sail one year (around the bicentennial - I think that year actually) I was on the Rose and they snuck over and used the very long, thin balloons, to decorate our figurehead lion in the appropriate “male” way. As the captain of the Rose wasn’t very strict on early rising it wasn’t until about 10am we even discovered that. The Brig Niagara had a hand in the evil doing as they were docked at our bow. I am sure the tourists had a good laugh. I forget what we did to get even but it wasn’t nearly as good as what they did to us.
And see you will be a good goat posting the boat of the day - better than my month where I did nothing a day and haven’t even sent you your prize yet.
@Kidsandliz - I was on a 24-foot sloop in NYC harbor on the 4th in '76, looking at all those tall ships! I probably waved at the time, but here’s a belated wave from frozen Philly, in memory of Summer sailing!
@aetris here’s a cannon salute back (/image and /giphy failed me)
@aetris ok using the method that takes work - here you go
