Our theater opened on Friday and had free tickets to see The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift. They’re giving away tickets weekly to F&F movies until the new one opens. Stupid plot, great cars. And we have drift competitions here!
@sammydog01 That one is so bad I turned it off after 20 minutes or so. Does anyone actually like watching a 30-something actor play a whiny, self-centered teen-ager?
@blaineg I do? I looked the actor up because he totally looked 35 but was actually 24 when it was filmed. Then again the plot was beside the point. The cars were worth it.
@blaineg@sammydog01 I won’t comment on the quality because I haven’t seen it. I have seen a few and none of them is really my thing. But they can be enjoyable. And even a bad movie can be enjoyable, perhaps in its very badness. What the FFs (pun intended) do is make the most of blowing shit up and presenting implausibly engineered and even more implausibly executed feats. I’d be willing to watch some of that in a theater especially. I don’t turn to FFs for dialog, acting, intelligence, story, philosophy, character development, insight into technology, etc. I go to watch shit blow up and to watch shit work that definitely would not in the real world (though a fraction of a percent of me thinks, “but it could . . . but it could?”).
@sammydog01 We have folks who do drifting locally, mostly late night in the middle of intersections they block off impromptu. It’s mostly considered a nuisance and most folks want to shut it down, lock people up, the typical bullshit. One of our people is trying to simply create a safe space for it, which would be a much better solution, imo.
@sammydog01 about this time last year my wife and I decided to marathon all the FF movies (what else are you going to do during the lockdown?), roughly one every day. Tokyo Drift almost derailed the entire effort. It was so hard to start #4 after that mess. It would have been a shame as #4 is when the franchise starts to get good and the next few movies are a great ride. Plus Han is a great character.
@joelmw Our drift course is in the parking lot at the Nascar track. It’s professionally run- they have clinics and a league. If you bring a helmet they’ll let you ride along. I paid ten dollars to watch from the stands a couple of weeks ago. In fact you can watch the whole race on twitch. You probably don’t want to but here it is.
Anyway I plan on going back. They told me they do night races in July with under lights and it’s just like Tokyo Drift. Good thing I had just seen the movie.
@fibrs86 I can’t imagine watching them all in a row. I wasn’t familiar with drift racing so that was kind of cool. I think I had only seen the first one and that was a long time ago.
We went to see Fast Five last night- fun movie. And Han is the best. They have free tickets for the sixth one on Friday but I don’t think I can handle another one that soon.
I love Jason Statham and I love Jeffery Donovan. They’re both super charming in most of their roles. Not this movie- I was sadly disappointed. Don’t recommend.
@sammydog01 I liked Wrath of Man, although there were some gaps in the plot initially but it eventually circled back. It wasn’t The Gentlemen which is another Guy Ritchie directed movie.
Jeffery Dean Morgan and Cary Elwes. Neither a particularly good actor but both fun to watch. I liked this movie a lot. Not many original ideas but also no torture porn. It was a pleasant surprise.
Rotten Tomatoes 29%. Pfft. I guess critics like torture porn.
Ours have been open probably the whole goddamned pandemic, but fuck Texas. The wife and I were both fully vaccinated as of a couple weeks ago, so we hit the local Cinemark the next Sunday. The next week, following the CDC’s wild fucking “go be unmasked!” (which, to be clear, I support–both the CDC and their guidance–because science; but, still, it feels wild), we spent way too much on a dinner out. It’s weird being back out in the world. Ftr, I always keep a mask handy and am happy to continue to wear it as requested and whenever it seems prudent.
Anywho. We saw Nobody. It was fun; not just fun, but very good, imo–but, yaknow, it’s not gonna win any awards, I don’t think. Loves us some Bob Odenkirk; and this casting makes me happy.
@joelmw Nobody was great.
I didn’t know it was the same director who made Hardcore Henry until after I saw it.
That guy needs to quit his day job & just make more movies.
Saw Godzilla vs Kong. A modern revisit of the OG monster movies that brings Kong into the mythos of Gojira. Pretty straightforward plot and pacing. Special effects are good in some places, and then in others, just a CGI-enhanced version of the same dudes in rubber suits wrestling in a model city filled with skyscrapers. Lasers, explosions, atomic breath weapons, buildings crushed, and monke goes ape.
The Father
Sorry, Chadwick, but Sir Anthony Hopkins deserved the win. Effortless, watching this master class in acting.
It is a touching and thoughtful film that really brings you into sharing the title character’s experience with dementia. If you are confused while watching it, that was the point. The director got it right.
@mike808 I’m confident it’s brilliant and I want to see it, but I’m not sure I want to feel that much of that kind of feeling for a while. Either way, I’m most likely to watch it at home, when I’m in a particular mood or at least when I’ve mustered the strength.
I mean, Jesus, just watching some of the clips is devastating.
I am betting a lot of people will no longer going to movies as much as they did pre-pandemic… too many alternatives were discovered to be almost as good or better. And definitely cheaper.
In my opinion, movies either need to offer some drastic discounts for a few months to get people interested again, or permanently lower ticket prices. (Seriously, those luxury cinemas are $20-30 a ticket!!)
@haydesigner I think there will continue to be a market, though I can see it being somewhat diminished. My hope is that they roll back those prices, but that may be little more than wishful.
I still like sitting in a theater and I especially prefer action flicks and creative cinematography in a theater.
@haydesigner@joelmw
Our closest movie theater hasn’t (yet) re-started matinee shows, if they ever will; they used to be reduced price showings. However, they do have $5 Tuesday shows.
I’m old-school (and old): I want to experience movies with a theater-sized setup; I want it to be an event. I don’t get any sense of ‘immersion’ at home.
Note: our TV at home is 32", and we rarely watch anything on it. It’s mostly dedicated to Xbox game usage.
Here Today
I’m a fan of Billy Crystal, so I enjoyed it, but far too much like a Hallmark special than a film.
Could have been a lot more powerful & deep but would have had to be twice as long.
A tiny little indy theater just reopened in the shared building I work in. One of my coworkers also works there part time and had offered everyone the hook up on watching until the theater starts getting full again. Right now they have Truffle Hunters, Army of the Dead, and When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.
I might try to make it out to see something this weekend but haven’t been paying attention to the movie scene and hadn’t heard of any of these and don’t know what I’d like to see.
They had wolfwalkers a week or 2 ago and I wanted to get in and see that but i didn’t and it felt a bit weird going to a kids movie alone.
Next week they are getting A Quiet Place 2, still haven’t seen the first one but maybe I’ll try.
My kiddo asked me to take her to a movie that is coming out. I don’t recall the name, but it’s a horror movie. When I was her age I really horror genre too, so I get it. But nowadays not so much. I’m not looking forward to watching the actual movie, but I’ll take a mommy-teenager day any time
@mbersiam@sammydog01 I think the daughter has already picked the movie but since the mother could not recall the movie I was merely suggesting it might be that. Since they was the only one available around here.
Regaurdless. As far as horror goes if that is the one she wanted to see it’s you know not scream/bloody horror more family thriller it sounds like? Idk.
@mbersiam@sammydog01 eh… Idk that a jump scare movie is scifi just because the jump scare is aliens. There doesn’t seem to be much scifi about the first one beyond "these things just showed up we think they might be aliens?”
Tremors is the same basic concept. With a more terrestrial predator. And you know. Horrible cwmpiness
@mbersiam@sammydog01 if you do the director linked above in interview you’ll here him say he did a family drama as a horror movie and a whole thing about loving his kids in it. Lol. So. Potential. Maybe.
@mbersiam@unksol The theater was a really good place to watch the first movie- I bet that would be true of this one too. It’s hard to get the sense of quiet at home. Enjoy!
I almost never go to the movies. But I’m glad our local theatre survived. They did jack the price from $5 to $6 if you don’t go to the $4 matinee. So frustrating /s
@KENSAI $5 was also convenient. Bill wise. Now dollars are involved lol.
The places that charge $12/15/20+ no thanks. The studios probably scale pricing some but just the building costs less in a small town… But I can wait and buy the Blu-ray for one ticket with digital copy or it will go to streaming so in general Im not up for that.
Only 45 minutes to a city if I want to get robbed lol
I was told if you know anything about the video games this movie made more sense. But who needs plot when you have action. And that woman from The Meg was in it. Glad I went, lots of fun. And they set it up for a sequel!
There doing those stupid drag races in my town and I drive through them two nights a week and it’s so irritating. So many people flooding the side of the road , almost in the road, sometimes people flood into the road. The drag races are happening while the road is open and other cars are driving down it which I don’t get. In a 5 lane road you’ll have two cars drag racing on one side, the turn lane and cars driving on the other two with the watchers right against the side of the road. If someone was to get pushed (there’s so many people) they’d get pushed right out in front of your car. I hate driving by it but it’s my way home and I still can’t figure out why the city continues to let it go on.
@Star2236 if it is an interstate, that’s federal, and call your local State Highway Patrol troop.
They will keep doing it as long as they keep getting away with it. Just like Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) fevered dream about 45 “learning his lesson” after the first impeachment.
@Star2236 Then call it in every time you see the illegal and hazardous activity on the roads. Use the local sheriff’s non-emergency number.
The police can’t police what they don’t know is happening and the lawless folks coming into their community and endangering the participants/co-conspirators and the other drivers lawfully using the road.

Not a big theater guy, but received an email about Regal giving out free Fast and the Furious 9 tickets. I clicked on the link and it actually let me pick out my free 2 seats in the theater for June 4th. Regal fans might want to check the app for info.
@sammydog01 Yup, it was. Sorry. But, I still enjoyed it. I also just grabbed two free tickets for FF7 playing this Fri.I will take these free tickets as long as they keep giving them to me.
@sammydog01 Missed FF7 because my buddy was working and both of my kids blew me off at the last minute
I did see FF8 free. How is 9 even possible - where they gonna go with it? Since the team already saved the world from nuclear disaster on 8 - how do you step it up from there???
@mfladd I had concert tickets and missed 8- gotta find it online somewhere. Fast 7 was crazy. I’ll definitely be seeing 9. Maybe it will involve space travel?
@mike808 damn it mike! I should not drink liquids and read the threads. I totally just spat fucking water across the table. Thankfully not on a child this time!
We went to the theaters right after the kids and I got cleared from having COVID back in February, but haven’t been back since. We saw the Croods 2. I never stopped liking kid’s movies so I’m biased, but I loved it.
Saw The Sparks Brothers documentary, it was long, but I loved it. Can’t believe I’ve never seen Rollercoaster, but if I had, I would not have believed they were a real band anyway.
Went to see The Fate of the Furious because it was free, left early because it was free.
Somehow I’m only one movie visit away from emerald status at Regal even though the last movie I saw in the theater was Little Women. Also had three birthday popcorn rewards! Used two.
This movie was hilarious- best one I’ve seen since our theater reopened and I’ve seen a lot. It’s pretty violent but at least I don’t remember any arms being ripped off. It almost has to be good with that cast. Go see it if you like dark sarcastic humor.
Oh and it was half priced popcorn day and they’re back to doing a free refill on a large.
@sammydog01 Saw it today: holy crap, SO GOOD! It’s weird to me that Disney has now featured an Iggy and the Stooges song in a feature film. I know it makes sense in context and narrative, but… it’s weird.
Borat on Amazon - not a 12 year old so I didn’t appreciate it.
Mortal Kombat - not a 12 year old but really enjoyed it
Godzilla vs. Kong - if you like wrestling, you’ll enjoy the story line.
The Mitchells vs Machines - easily my favorite of 2021.
The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift
Our theater opened on Friday and had free tickets to see The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift. They’re giving away tickets weekly to F&F movies until the new one opens. Stupid plot, great cars. And we have drift competitions here!
Rotten Tomatoes 37%. Too low.

@sammydog01 That’s cool. I even watched some of the video. Not all three hours, but a minute or so. But I’m glad you shared it. And thanks.
Wrath of Man
I love Jason Statham and I love Jeffery Donovan. They’re both super charming in most of their roles. Not this movie- I was sadly disappointed. Don’t recommend.
Rotten Tomatoes 67%. Too high.
@sammydog01 I liked Wrath of Man, although there were some gaps in the plot initially but it eventually circled back. It wasn’t The Gentlemen which is another Guy Ritchie directed movie.
@ironcheftoni I liked The Gentlemen. I guess I like my movies happier.
@sammydog01 Love me some Statham. I was thinking that one might be fun to see on the big screen.

@joelmw Can’t wait for the Nobody vs John Wick matchup.
/image our battle will be legendary
@joelmw Nobody was great.
I didn’t know it was the same director who made Hardcore Henry until after I saw it.
That guy needs to quit his day job & just make more movies.
@joelmw @RogerWilco I saw Nobody on a road trip a couple of weeks ago. I loved it. Except for the parts where I had to cover my eyes.
@joelmw Nobody was really good. Great quotes. Christopher Loyd had fun doing that role.
@ironcheftoni Lloyd’s casting was great too. He makes everything he’s in a little more fun.
@haydesigner Regal unlimited is $21 a month and I get bored. And am not particular, I just like sitting in the theater.
@haydesigner I’m still looking forward to the day that my local Alamo Drafthouse reopens.

@john991 I want to see that one but I’ll wait until it comes to video and I rent from the library.
Not yet, but Cruella comes out on my wife’s birthday. I’m thinking of taking her out to the new theatre they tried to open Feb 2020.
A tiny little indy theater just reopened in the shared building I work in. @mbersiam the only “horror” movie in theaters I can think of is a quiet place 2 and I hear, as far as horror movies go it would be good for that.
@mbersiam @unksol A Quiet Place 2 should be really good and not too graphic.
@mbersiam @sammydog01 I think the daughter has already picked the movie but since the mother could not recall the movie I was merely suggesting it might be that. Since they was the only one available around here.

@mbersiam @unksol The theater was a really good place to watch the first movie- I bet that would be true of this one too. It’s hard to get the sense of quiet at home. Enjoy!

Mortal Kombat
I was told if you know anything about the video games this movie made more sense. But who needs plot when you have action. And that woman from The Meg was in it. Glad I went, lots of fun. And they set it up for a sequel!
@sammydog01 There would probably be more interest if it were Mortal Kombat vs The Meg.

@kuoh The had a preview for The Suicide Squad which has a shark guy. That would be cool.

I have an unlimited pass, gotta see em all. I wasn’t sure if I would like this movie, it’s more serious than most of what I watch. But it was pretty good. There’s a book called In the Skin of a Jihadist but my library doesn’t own it. Maybe I’ll find it on sale someday.
@sammydog01 my library will do a computer search to find books they don’t have and borrow from other libraries.
@sammydog01 I had MoviePass before it went bad. I loved it, I saw almost everything that was out!
@mycya4me I went to a good number of movies too. It’s nice to be able to do that again.
Going to see Quiet Place 2 tonight!
@sillyheathen Let me know how it is!
@sammydog01 will do. We just watched the first one last night I was pleasantly surprised by it. I’m excited but also apprehensive about the theater. We’re heading in now!
@sammydog01 I REALLY enjoyed the film. If you like the first you will really like the second one. Really intelligently written. Would definitely recommend!
@sillyheathen It was really good. Again a good one to see in a theater. I might go again.
@sammydog01 we were thinking about going again too! It really was a great one for the big screen!
@sillyheathen Regal just announced a Quiet Place 1 and 2 double feature on Wednesday. Bought my ticket already.
@sammydog01 TOTALLY going if it’s in my area!!!
@sillyheathen Now I need to think of something I can leave for my family for dinner since I’m ditching them.

@mfladd Are you sure it’s not Fast and Furious 6? They’ve been doing free showings on Fridays of the first 8 movies, one a week.
@sammydog01 Yup, it was. Sorry. But, I still enjoyed it. I also just grabbed two free tickets for FF7 playing this Fri.I will take these free tickets as long as they keep giving them to me.

@Koolhandjoe I’ll be seeing it by myself since everyone else is too chicken.

@sammydog01 We really enjoyed it… thought it held up to the other 2… First one is still the best though…
@Koolhandjoe This is the first one I’ve seen in a theater (not counting the Annabelle ones). I really liked it.
@sammydog01 we did too… first in the theater for me and my son too
We went to the theaters right after the kids and I got cleared from having COVID back in February, but haven’t been back since. We saw the Croods 2. I never stopped liking kid’s movies so I’m biased, but I loved it.

@sammydog01 I liked the first one so I can’t wait to see this one!
@sillyheathen I haven’t seen it but I should have a VUDU code coming for it. Although I guess I know how it ended.
Cruella
I thought it was pretty good. Don’t take the kids.
