Altho that maths term is forgivable if you are coming from a commonwealth country where that is often normal grammar school and public usage.
But that “maths” usage is technically erroneous (and is uncommon in casual use) within the US and within many other countries; and also is erroneous in dictionary expositions, and in professional journals.
Mathematics is a singular noun. The unifying aspect of all the areas of mathematics study is the mathematical method, which covers all topics mathematical.
(even covers simple low counting, at which some mammals and birds are decent).
@f00l@pakopako@chienfou The character & the actor were both from the UK (I loved that show, btw!)… The Brits have a lot of words & expressions that don’t make sense, but isn’t that why we had a revolution – so we could escape those weirdos?
@chienfou@f00l@pakopako Sorry, that wasn’t originally my comment, i just figured that’s why using that term would make sense. And, yes, i think being separated by The Pond & a common language helps a lot. Different, but like Reese’s PB Cups: “two great tastes that taste great together”!
@chienfou@f00l@pakopako@unksol personally I was brought up being told it is rude to correct someone to show superiority.
Adding paragraphs to support why I was right would have got me back handed.
So to me, the response was smug and over the top. I remembered the Irk video and I added it to add levity, but if everyine thinks the reply was great, to each their own.
The irritant for me (and others) is that “maths”, however acceptable as usage in some settings, ever so slightly misses the point of that mathematics is.
But the issues over manners and smugness or arrogance are also genuine.
“Maths” (IMHO), however valid colloquially, acts as a mischaracterization of mathematics, and isn’t used at professional levels. For reasons that matter, at least to many mathematicians.
But I got half cocked about it.
My bad.
Oh well. My brain evaporates out my ears all day long. Have pity!
@chienfou@f00l@pakopako@tinamarie1974 I’m not offended. Personally. But that was a weird hill to die on. I’m sure I do it on other things… Absolutely capable of being annoying/smug/know-it-all
Um actually… Etc.
A good slap that your sounding like a bit of a jerk to someone else doesn’t hurt
Approach the NAND gate at warp 8, Mr Spock.
After staring at this chart on my wall for years, I feel like there might be some other logical options, I’m just not sure what they would be called:
@heartny The three in the middle are all repeats. The new ones are Trick, Treat, Trick NOT Treat, and NOT Trick Treat (or Treat NOT Trick).
AHHHH REAL MATHS!!!
Isn’t using the areas outside the circles a bit disingenuous?
@chienfou
Math is disingenuous.
/giphy “disingenuous math”

@chienfou @f00l You watch 2012’s Elementary, the CBS take on the Sherlock Holmes catalog? Maths can totally be weaponized.
@pakopako
I suppose I’m going
/Asshole mode ON
here:
MATH
Not maths.

Does the user AH mode ever actually go off?
Dunno.
Please forgive “AH mode” if can.

@chienfou @ircon96 @pakopako
Ok didn’t realize you were quoting the Brit character.
Apologies. ; )

As for escaping being part of the Brit/UK extended universe of the late 1700’s:
all to the good!
Now we (US vs UK/Commonwealth) get to be besties and get confused by each other!
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako Sorry, that wasn’t originally my comment, i just figured that’s why using that term would make sense. And, yes, i think being separated by The Pond & a common language helps a lot. Different, but like Reese’s PB Cups: “two great tastes that taste great together”!
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako I love both Elementary and Sherlock. And quiet frankly Netflix Enola Holmes… Maybe it’s the format. They are all good.
Maths
@chienfou @pakopako @unksol
Just don’t try to join a graduate math department accompanied by that usage.
Brit casual usage deviations are fine. In fact, they’re charming.
/giphy “math vs maths”

@f00l @pakopako @unksol
There… FIFY … Because everyone knows there’s no such thing as a graduate math program at Cambridge or Oxford for instance.
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako @unksol seems relevant
@chienfou @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
No comment on the “Oxbridge” thing.
To the point: apparently I spoke in an offensive manner.
Didn’t see it at the time. My bad re that.
And mea culpa.
All apologies.
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako @tinamarie1974
Lol now I’m re-reading trying to find the actual “offensive” part.
Pretty sure there is nothing offensive
@chienfou @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
Ty. Hope your reaction was the common one.
I think someone didn’t like my attitude or my take on “math” vs “maths” terminology tho.
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako @tinamarie1974 lmao. I’m sure that was a joke. I was just trying to figure out what would warrant an apology lol
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako @unksol personally I was brought up being told it is rude to correct someone to show superiority.

Fair enough re arrogance etc.
The irritant for me (and others) is that “maths”, however acceptable as usage in some settings, ever so slightly misses the point of that mathematics is.
But the issues over manners and smugness or arrogance are also genuine.
I do apologize.
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako @tinamarie1974 mmm. Not sure I caught everything the first time around. I was just parsing math/maths
Everyone knows the British say Maths… And their schools are different. Not going to reference junior high in a British school system…
So… Idk who should feel dumb here if we were having a competition.
I straight up got its said different ways/thought we were having a “lost in the pond” thing

@chienfou @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
actually love that YouTube channel.
: )
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako @tinamarie1974 and yet went off on an math rant? Lol
@chienfou @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
The “math” came out because I overreacted.
“Maths” (IMHO), however valid colloquially, acts as a mischaracterization of mathematics, and isn’t used at professional levels. For reasons that matter, at least to many mathematicians.

@chienfou @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
Hey, I was caught in a sneezing fit when I chose to “die on that hill”
Does that help excise human stupidity and arrogance at all?
; )
Prob not.
@chienfou @f00l @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
Hey, how about a new subject?!
@chienfou @f00l @Kyeh @pakopako @tinamarie1974 I’m sure there is some strange pussy wandering around… Maybe even a dog. Someone has pet pics in the magazine lol
@chienfou @f00l @Kyeh @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
Yes, I think Grovel Fest 2025 has run its course.

@f00l @Kyeh @macromeh @pakopako @tinamarie1974 @unksol
/showme cute kittens playing with balls of yarn while several people look on in rapt adoration

How’s that?
