This has been the lowest snowfall winter we’ve had in 80 years or something; I guess we still have a couple more potentially snowy months to go, but it’s alarming, really. We’re going to have temps in the 60s/70s next week!
@catthegreat@chienfou@Lynnerizer Yeah, but the weather people have said we’re not going to get enough to reach a normal level of snowpack even if we have the kind of blizzards they’ve been having in the notheast, and we’re almost certainly in for a summer of drought & fire danger.
I didn’t realize that we’re neighbors, I’m right nextdoor in CT.
YES, I’d say we’re having a snowpocalypse or a nor’easter bomb cyclone as they’re call it, we are about to be pounded with another 13" to 20" of the white fluffy stuff with winds up to 65mph in some areas!
I’ve already charged my power backup devices, had groceries delivered, and moved the vehicles to abide by our new HOA’s parking rules. What a PITA that’s been this year! I’d rather pay higher HOA fees and have a plow service like we’ve always had in the past. This new company is making us move our vehicles and they don’t even do a good job with clearing the snow!
I regress, I suppose I could have saved that for the blame the goat thread.
It could be an age thing but I don’t remember having this much snow, in these amounts, since I was a kid!
@heartny ya… I’d call it 2-3" so far here in NYC (8PM, specifically Auburndale aka Flushing Queens), with 12"-18" more in the forecast overnight. Going to be worse than the last big storm, which still has 2’-3’ piles sitting around. Should be warmer after this one, so a bigger mess but hopefully melts off faster
@Lynnerizer I have many rechargeable batteries from meh in various stages if charge. Hopefully I won’t need to use them. Unfortunately I dug out my stash of lanterns from meh and most of them have to be tossed due to battery leakage, some rather severe. Had to go to Walmart to get a decent one. Oddly enough they closed at 5:00 today due to the storm, but I managed to get there in time to grab the last Energizer lantern. Hopefully I won’t need to use that either.
@catthegreat The batteries had leaked so much in the large lantern that it was oozing over the edges of the battery door, which I couldn’t get open without prying. Figured it was hopeless at that point.
I believe historically we get our biggest snows in March around here because gulf moisture buuuut April 15 is generally recognized as being the safe from freezing date for planting.
I feel for the rest of USA, been a crazy year, and upper East Coast about to get hammered again. South Texas and about to plant my Tomatoes… Stay Safe out there.
The last option would probably make the most sense but our version of winter is 4-6 months of intermittent rain. We have more of that coming but it will gradually increase in temperature.
I guess partly that depends on the “where you are”. I’m currently on a week-long trip to South Florida so where I’mat is not a big thing.
Back home in Central Alabama we’re expecting a couple of night of freezing weather. Thankfully I have the capacity to adjust the heat in the cold frame I built around our plumeria remotely so that’s not a problem. Ditto for the pool pumps. Everything else in the yard is frost tolerant at this point.
We are ranging from 3 degree lows in parts of the state to 82 degrees in the southeast. My neck of the woods is lows in the upper 20’s to 75 for the highs. No precipitation.
I would say the day before yesterday was shorts weather here, but it is currently snowing with the ground cold enough to start accumulating.
Hopefully the last of it. But, my mantra has always been if it is cold, it may as well be snowing, so today is perfectly acceptable weather for February.
@kittykat9180@KNmeh7 Up here in New England we have crazy people who wear shorts all year long. When I was in high tech, I worked with a bunch of them.
@ItalianScallion@kittykat9180 I played soccer in Lake Erie effect snow-belt growing up. Needless to say shorts and cold weather are not a problem to me.
But, I consider 50 degrees short weather if you look at it like “Can I get away with wearing shorts?” Probably. It is in the 50s.
It sounds crazy if you say “It is in the 50s, what should I wear?” Shorts.
@ItalianScallion@KNmeh7
Yeah. Short weather for me is mid 60s or higher. But that also depends on what I plan on doing.
If it’s 67° outside and I’m going to the zoo, I’ll probably wear shorts. That radiant heat from the sun makes a difference.
It’s been a very warm winter. The last several days have been historically average. And we had a few days back in January that it were historically average.
However, on Wednesday, we’re going to reach 75°. The whole week will be highs in the 70s. With these crazy temperature swings my poor plants, probably don’t know what they are supposed to do.
This is a screenshot of the text message I just received from our electric company. It’s not even supposed to start snowing here for another hour or so. Talk about jumping the gun! And not with a very positive attitude! Let’s manifest no power outages!
We ended up with 15 inches and OMG what a horrible mess we’ve got here! It’s going to be a long while before I’m able to get to my vehicle safely. My guy already had to cancel a surgical procedure tomorrow that he really couldn’t afford to miss. But what are you going to do, life happens!
In some places the snow covered trees are breathtaking and some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen.
There was a real tragedy out here today when the foreman of the plow company lost his life. His name is Jay and he’d become a good friend to my guy who was a lifelong fellow landscaper and snow plow driver. It looks like it was carbon monoxide poisoning due to the tailpipe of his plow truck being stuffed with snow. The guys have been resting and/or sleep in their trucks in the upper parking lot where we move our vehicles to during snow storms. It seems that when he backed up into the huge snow drift he wasn’t aware his tailpipe got loaded with snow. At 61 years old this crazy and preventable accident took his life. I’ve been so upset all day.
The plow company wasn’t prepared for even one person to absent from their crew and our community came together to deal with it the best they could until the company regroups and hopefully comes back tomorrow to clean up and clear out the snow. They took it slow and steady to hand shovel the development enough to get by. We couldn’t get out the front door if we needed to in case of an emergency, nevermind drive our vehicles through the 4 foot snow drifts in some spots. The guy upstairs had to dig out the ambulance after getting stuck in several spots. I’ll include some before and after pictures of our view from our window and looking out the front door. This is definitely not the largest amount of snow we’ve had but it’s up there and it will definitely be one of the most rememberable storms.
@ItalianScallion
Oh @Lynnerizer – I’m so sorry about your friend, that’s terrible! I was wondering how you were doing, whether you’d had a power outage. I guess not but what a sad day.
Thank you all for your condolences, that means a lot.
ItalianScallion, Yes, those pictures do remind me of the blizzard of 1978! And I remember THAT storm like it was yesterday! I had walked out my bedroom door and landed in a snow drift that came up to my chest! My next door neighbor had to come rescue me! I was 13 years old and 5’ 2", thank God he was 6’ 5"! 🛟
We’re now 3 days post storm and today they sent 1 plow truck with 2 workers but they only stayed here for 1 hour. It’s getting ridiculous now, people are falling and getting hurt left and right! Today the ambulance was here 3 times taking people to the hospital!
My friend next door gashed her head and broke her hand earlier today and we actually watched a guy fall twice trying to get up to where we have to move our vehicles during snow storms. That in itself is ridiculous, this place has been plowed for 30 years without anyone having to relocate their cars! And now, after the management company sent out one email on the first day letting everyone know that the plow company had a medical emergency and would be back the next day, the manager is dodging phone calls from people trying to inquire about when we’ll be plowed out!
I’m trying to not get worked up and be bothered by this but it’s hard when I’ve got people texting me all day just to vent/bitch saying they’ve got to get back to work! Not everyone can afford to call out 3 days and that’s just so far. I’m not sure what’s going to happen in a few hours when I put in my delivery order for groceries, hopefully their vehicle will make it up the hill because my guys mini van won’t!
Stay tuned, I’ll update…
Hopefully with more positivity!
Oh yeah Walmart Delivery, for the first time ever, is totally booked up, can’t get a grocery delivery until tomorrow. Even their express delivery is unavailable, where you pay $5 or $10 for one or three hour delivery. I like that because I can speak to the shopper as they’re shopping (like when they are looking for substitutions for unavailable items) and the same person that shops delivers the order. I actually enjoy tipping those people well!
So until tomorrow…
Started snowing about an hour ago. Not sticking to the sidewalk or street yet, but I’m sure it will. Well…one good thing is we have a snowblower and my husband did the sidewalks of a few houses the last time. Just the sidewalk. Only required walking down and back home once. We have Asian neighbors and they aren’t use to snow so our neighbor next door brought us a box of cookies! Asian cookies. Never saw them before but they were good! We are hoping we get more with we clear the sidewalk after this snow! (heck we walk the dog and use it every day) btw…somehow nothing is different than when my Italian relatives came in the late 1800’s. The men learn English for work but the women don’t! Well they try when the kids start school.
Sitting in Venice FL waiting for a table at Sharky’s for sunset and dinner . 15mph+ wings with 60⁰ temps. Brought a windbreaker in case the shorts and short-sleeve shirt aren’t enough on the deck.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@chienfou@Lynnerizer LOVE this one! I would love to paint that one but I doubt I’d be able to do it justice. The texture from the screen is fascinating.
@Lynnerizer
Thank you. I took that shot and then went outside and took others without the screen being in the way. At the end of the day this was still my favorite!
Sorry to hear y’all are still having snow issues while I’m down here and they are bitching locally that it’s 45°!
Each of the last few days we’ve gone to the beach and open air beachside bars. I’m wearing shorts and a t-shirt and carrying a windbreaker “in case it gets cold”… Half the rest of the people look like they are prepping for an Arctic expedition! The other half of them are all at least in long sleeves and hoodies.
What a bunch of wusses (which is actually even more fascinating since 2/3 of the people down here are from the upper Midwest snowbirding in Florida. This weather is like their spring/early summer. Go figure!)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Lol
I literally Lol when I read the locals look like they’re prepping for an Arctic expedition!
Hot or cold, I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere and haven’t heard the locals complaining about the weather! Guess it’s just what most people do…
Glad you are enjoying yourselves, a vacation to someplace warm and sunny sounds REALLY GOOD right about now!
Please keep those beautiful pictures coming…
So when I was shoveling ice and in the midst of the throes of winter I was advertised and ordered a very warm long puffer coat from Woot.
By the time it arrived a week later it was 70 degrees.
It will get down to 34 tonight, but just overnight. I’m pretty sure winter is done.
The coat? It’s amazing. Thick, long, and yep, super warm. Probably overkill except for less than a week a year in Louisiana, but wearing it one day it will be worth the $10 lol. It’s already in the closet for next year.
Up here in the Boston area – not all that far from @Lynnerizer, if I remember correctly – the wind has picked up as of 11:30 pm on Sunday night, and the snow is starting to move into the area. The intense snowfall is supposed to be from 4 am or so to noonish when we’ll have a full-blown blizzard. When it’s all over Monday evening, we’re supposed to have 12 to 18 inches of heavy, wet snow; one report said it would be like concrete. I’ll be out there in the morning to do a first pass with the snowblower. It would be very slow going if I had to tackle 18 inches all at once!
And… my Kenwood power station that I got here at Meh is at 100% charge and plugged in to keep that way since power outages will be happening due to the heavy snow.
Hi neighbor! Yup you remembered correctly! We’ve got about 6" on the railing of my deck and it’s just about 2:30am. My guy spent his life landscaping and plowing snow, now his nephew has his accounts. He was just saying what a hard time he’s going to have plowing this heavy wet snow because unfortunately said nephew doesn’t have the same work ethic, he refuses to plow or shovel at 3 to 4" increments!
This IS some very wet snow!
Earlier in the thread I posted a screenshot of the warning from Eversource power company, they’re now estimating it could take up to 6 days to get the power back on. I found that kinda crazy (and WAY too much negativity being put out there ) since NO ONE has even lost power yet!
Fingers crossed, and a little extra from the BIG GUY upstairs , THAT doesn’t happen!
@ItalianScallion@Lynnerizer
Good luck you two (and everyone else in the area). Having your power out for an extended time is a major PITA. My daughter and her family were out for 2 weeks in Nashville recently after an ice storm. Hope you fare much better than that!
Thanks!
My mom is about 15 miles inland from me and she video called me around 7am as she’s walking me through her house looking out windows and opening all the doors on each side of her house to show me how much snow she’s got, she’s estimating at least 15 inches so far. Her poor bushes and shrubs look like they’re done! Hopefully they’ll pop up when the wet heavy snow is removed but IDK, they’re pretty bad! And the storm still has several more hours to go. She’s widowed and still in her beautiful huge home!
We hadn’t looked outside yet but we definitely have at least as much, if not more snow than she does, we’re right on the shore. The wind is blowing so loudly that I actually thought it was thunder!
Looks like we’re not going to be able to make my guys endoscopy procedure tomorrow, there’s no way our lot is going to be cleared so it’s safe enough for me to get to the car, I use one canadian crutch to walk. He’s pretty bummed about it but what are you going to do…
At least we haven’t lost power!
And I pray that I didn’t just jinx myself! Lol
@chienfou@Lynnerizer@kyeh
While I was sleeping last night, we did indeed have blizzard conditions. Here in Cambridge (adjacent west of Boston) we ended up, as of 3 pm, with about a foot of heavy wet snow. I saw report that the storm was a bit farther off the coast or south or something like that, so we didn’t get the high end amount (18 inches). My struggling snowblower lasted almost an hour before the engine sputtered and gave up the ghost. I think it’s because the carburetor was running very richat at the choke’s leanest setting, it still wasn’t lean enough. Oh well, I got a lot done and the lovely people upstairs are having a couple of guys come over to finish up. The weekend is supposed to be around 45 degrees, so here’s the project:
It’s a Chinese-made knockoff that I hope will do the trick, because the Toro one cost a bit over $100 more. If it doesn’t I can always get a carb rebuild kit… that will cost more than the new carb I bought!
@macromeh yeah. Estacada and some of the areas around us, slightly higher elevations, got a bit of snow but we’ve had an insanely mild winter for the most part.
Don’t write off winter just yet. I read an article just yesterday saying the polar vortex is weak this year which means we could see very unpredictable weather and a roller coaster of hot and unseasonably cold throughout the spring. Sucks for the farmers out there, especially the arable ones… I wonder how many crops will be ruined.
@heartny Same here, except that the fridge is getting close to empty, so I may have to force myself to go out… or I could get groceries delivered in a few days after the plethora of orders tapers off. My car is in the driveway in front of the other tenants’ car and still covered in snow. (Before the storm, someone took my usual spot on the street. )
I think we are done for the year.
This has been the lowest snowfall winter we’ve had in 80 years or something; I guess we still have a couple more potentially snowy months to go, but it’s alarming, really. We’re going to have temps in the 60s/70s next week!
@Kyeh

Wow, that is warm weather you’re going to be having, get out your bikini!
Lol…
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer
Your fire season this Summer’s going to suck
@Kyeh fire and rattlesnakes will be happy about the upcoming summer!
@chienfou @Kyeh @Lynnerizer still plenty of time for snow and spring rain
@catthegreat @chienfou @Lynnerizer Yeah, but the weather people have said we’re not going to get enough to reach a normal level of snowpack even if we have the kind of blizzards they’ve been having in the notheast, and we’re almost certainly in for a summer of drought & fire danger.
@catthegreat @Kyeh @Lynnerizer
I remember those days
@chienfou @Kyeh @Lynnerizer hoping you / they are wrong! We’ll see…
Snowpocolypse is due to start tomorrow through Monday
@heartny I think this will be the 3rd we will have had!
@heartny what state do you live in?
@ragingredd New York
@ragingredd
@heartny

@baqui63 @heartny too late now, but can’t you use steel wool to clean off the contacts?
@catthegreat The batteries had leaked so much in the large lantern that it was oozing over the edges of the battery door, which I couldn’t get open without prying. Figured it was hopeless at that point.
@heartny @therealjrn Hey, I’m in NH!!
I believe historically we get our biggest snows in March around here because gulf moisture buuuut April 15 is generally recognized as being the safe from freezing date for planting.
@therealjrn IDK bout dat. I think IRS can still freeze bank accounts after that date.
@phendrick That’s why it’s easy to remember
Earth Day is April 22nd if that’s any better!
@therealjrn where?
@catthegreat We’re in USDA hardiness zone 7A, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Nor’easter coming through Sunday into Monday. After getting 5 inches of snow dumped on us yesterday.

Funny you should ask today. Yesterday was shorts weather but this morning it decided to winter just a little bit. Should be over by noon-ish
I would say the day before yesterday was shorts weather here, but it is currently snowing with the ground cold enough to start accumulating.
Hopefully the last of it. But, my mantra has always been if it is cold, it may as well be snowing, so today is perfectly acceptable weather for February.

@ItalianScallion

@ItalianScallion
Thanks @Kyeh.
Yes, I forgot to mention that we didn’t lose power. I would’ve rather lost power than our friend Jay. Very somber day.

@ItalianScallion @Kyeh @Lynnerizer
What a horribly tragic tragic accident!
So sorry for your loss.
@Lynnerizer I can’t imagine losing a friend suddenly like that. My heart goes out to you, my friend.
@Lynnerizer Your photos look like they could have been taken just after the Blizzard of '78!
@chienfou @ItalianScallion @Kyeh

@chienfou @ItalianScallion @Kyeh
And I forgot to mention that it’s snowing again here right now!
I think we’re only getting a few more inches, I haven’t checked the forecast recently.

@chienfou @ItalianScallion @Kyeh
This last big snowstorm here Walmart canceled their home deliveries for a few days until things got a little better.

@ItalianScallion
I hope you don’t have a power outage! Too bad you can’t reroute that snowstorm back here.
@Kyeh I wish I could!
@ItalianScallion

I found that kinda crazy (and WAY too much negativity being put out there
) since NO ONE has even lost power yet!

, THAT doesn’t happen!

This IS some very wet snow!
Earlier in the thread I posted a screenshot of the warning from Eversource power company, they’re now estimating it could take up to 6 days to get the power back on.
Fingers crossed, and a little extra from the BIG GUY upstairs
@ItalianScallion @Lynnerizer
Good luck you two (and everyone else in the area). Having your power out for an extended time is a major PITA. My daughter and her family were out for 2 weeks in Nashville recently after an ice storm. Hope you fare much better than that!
@chienfou @ItalianScallion
Thanks!
And the storm still has several more hours to go. She’s widowed and still in her beautiful huge home!

The wind is blowing so loudly that I actually thought it was thunder!

Lol
My mom is about 15 miles inland from me and she video called me around 7am as she’s walking me through her house looking out windows and opening all the doors on each side of her house to show me how much snow she’s got, she’s estimating at least 15 inches so far. Her poor bushes and shrubs look like they’re done! Hopefully they’ll pop up when the wet heavy snow is removed but IDK, they’re pretty bad!
We hadn’t looked outside yet but we definitely have at least as much, if not more snow than she does, we’re right on the shore.
@chienfou @Lynnerizer @kyeh

I never really wintered over here in the PNW. I’m sure I’ll regret typing this because now we will get a snow storm.
@sillyheathen We had about 4-5 inches of snow last week (all gone now). But we are a bit north of you (and at about 800ft elevation).
We got snow again this morning on top of snowpocolypse. Definitely not going out until April at this point
@heartny Same here, except that the fridge is getting close to empty, so I may have to force myself to go out… or I could get groceries delivered in a few days after the plethora of orders tapers off. My car is in the driveway in front of the other tenants’ car and still covered in snow. (Before the storm, someone took my usual spot on the street.
)
Not where I am. At least this week. We had a ton of rain last week, but this week, so far, is nice. House is opened up and I’m actually cleaning!
