Honestly, going thru menopause memory is a weird thing. I can recite lyrics from songs I sang 40 years ago, but ask me my home address or who my current doctors are and my mind goes blank!

Way back in 2013 it was added. There was a thread about things we wished were here. I asked for ability to change my username because someone else was one letter different than mine and we were being confused. @Shaun fixed us up a day or two later and asked me to try it out. I know a few others who changed names for reasons. It can be handy when life wants to go a different way. Only thing I noticed odd later was your username updated everywhere you posted but not if someone responded to your post. I have not checked if this is still true or if it would bother someone who needed to completely disassociate with the old name. I know a few people chose to start a new account and delete the old.
@speediedelivery It’s pretty obvious (to anyone who has done coding) that the usernames within the text of a post are not actually linked to any account, so that’s why they wouldn’t update. (The “at” just turns the username into a blind pointer to the user database, with as-needed runtime resolution of what it hits; if the account isn’t there, no problem, just ignore it!) It also means that once the username has changed, your profile won’t reflect replies citing the old username. Trying to fix that probably would have been A Simple Matter Of Some Coding™ plus either a shitload of runtime searching every extant post for username instances to update, or a fundamental restructuring of the forum and/or user databases. The coding might or might not have been simple in fact; I can’t say. The results likely would have been messier than anybody wanted to deal with.
@werehatrack I figured that was the way of things. I posted the data in case someone saw this thread and was planning to do it. It might not occur to someone either not having the knowledge or just simply not thinking about it.
Some people who went with new accounts had headaches with finding info from that account or discovering they were using one account here and a different one elsewhere such as Sidedeal and discount codes etc didn’t work.
Both ways of changing your username have pros and cons. As I just wanted to be different instead of not be stalked or associated with something or someone from the better forgotten past, my change was simpler. Others were called out and kept getting the names posted together when they wanted a new start.
I don’t think anyone here actually noticed that I changed because another user posted with a very similar name. I was quite active for a time. Then some people (in my opinion) were rude and just not fun so I stepped back. Lurk a bit most days but no longer read nearly everything or check in multiple times to see updates.

I would have assumed using a SAK for internal table linking so there would only be a T_MEMBER table to change the ID and all existing links would stay intact because of the SAK.
Granted I have no idea how meh is set up/don’t deal with some of the newer stuff. I’m not a DBA. I’m just very used to playing one on our very large complicated Oracle implementation.
Don’t ask me about mongoDB or SQLserver. Or the AI ones needing shutdown
