Just stumbled across a site selling LEGO sets far below retail prices. Is this place just another scam?
Discount Direct website
Most likely scam.

@RiotDemon
So no 85" TV for $100? Booooo!!!
https://www.discounts99.cc/products/samsung-85inch-4k-hdr-smart-120mr-led-tv-un85au8000fxzc
Thanks for looking out.
Two different location addresses on their site.
One is a Halfway House, and the other one is used for a different shady website.
@FreePasta @RiotDemon
yeah and every TV has list price of… $499.
@RiotDemon Kinda weird how the “scam” domain was registered on Oct 16th… and the very next day on October 17th there were TWO complaints about the site on Scam Detector.
And one said he already filed a complaint. Who files a complaint against an online order the day after (or even the day of?) ordering something???
[Not defending the scam site at all. Just pointing out how weird/suspicious that timing is.]
Also… FREE SHIPPING on an 85" TV for $99
@haydesigner @RiotDemon Yeah I noticed that too. Even the complaints seem scammy!
@haydesigner @RiotDemon So one way that happens is that a person orders a too-good-to–be-true in the way those are typically ordered, which is too-fast-to-be-smart. But they aren’t completely dim, so a little voice tells them afterwards to examine the website more and do a little googling. If you were in this position you would also become convinced you were scammed and file a complaint before waiting for your thing that you know isn’t coming.
@mayshar… but you can’t really file a complaint until the delivery date has passed. No organization is going to listen to a complaint the day after a purchase.
Hmmm…
Arizona address but using a .cc web address. (TLD for a chain of islands (the Cocos or Keeling Islands – a territory of Australia)
@chienfou
They also have a CO address supposedly. (It’s a Halfway House.)

Give them a break, though. They’re only 3 days old.

@chienfou @FreePasta
Well, then definitely legit if DNS says so.
Using domain privacy service (not unusual), cloudflare (hides/protects good and bad outfits), and a singapore IP hosting address.
What could possibly go wrong?
@FreePasta @mike808
I went for it, I know things that are too good to be true usually are, but man, I’ve been really wanting that https://www.discounts99.cc/products/lego-super-mario-71374-nintendo-entertainment-system
I was just at the lego store and the retail is $239. I paid for it here with paypal which is supposed to have “Purchase Protection” so we’ll see what happens. I’ll keep you posted. It was a little weird that the paypal account was set up to chenghu5566@gmail.com. Seems legit.
@canuk I do really hope you’re joking.
@canuk Now that they have your name and address, you will receive snail-mail spam everyday for the rest of your life.
@bmf kindling for the fireplace. follow me for more life hacks
Order Confirmed! I’ll keep you posted!
@canuk
I’m curious as to if there’s been any update".
@FreePasta
It still shows “awaiting shipment” but I did get an order confirmation email so that’s something…
I’ll keep you posted! I mean it’s only been 12 days…
@canuk
You’re right.
I should have waiting another 2 weeks.
@FreePasta I gotta check on the buyer’s guarantee on Paypal so that I don’t miss the window.
I’ve been weirdly successful with crazy internet schemes before which gives me false confidence.
@canuk @FreePasta a lot of stuff is 30 days I think… So the seller will give you false tracking or something to hold your hopes and stop you from contacting your credit card.
@canuk @FreePasta @RiotDemon Another scam is to actually send something worthless to your zip code. Someone gets a sample or something and you get a tracking number that shows delivered. The post office looks it up and it shows wrong address for a few ounce thing and you are expecting a larger/heavier thing.
@FreePasta @RiotDemon @speediedelivery I’ve heard of people getting bricks so that it even shows close to the proper weight. Related: Mark Rober just released an interesting video about phone scammers:
@canuk I love the subtle flex that among all the spam calls on his phone it says Jay-Z face-timed him
@FreePasta @RiotDemon @speediedelivery What the heck is wrong with people? Are they more or less honest than before, or is it the same amount of bad people but now they have access to the internets
Also, a couple more days and I’m going to initiate a dispute with PayPal. These clowns haven’t responded to my emails asking when they’re going to ship it!!
@canuk
The address that they give is a house in Mesa, AZ, on a street that Google Maps doesn’t have a Street View for. Arizona overrode all local ordinances a couple of years back, and allows home-based businesses everywhere, but the unanswered question is whether the homeowner there knows that their address is being used by that website.
My instincts all say that you’ve been scammed. But then, that was what I expected from the first; the red-alert sirens and flashing lights were kind of obvious here.
@canuk So how did this all end up - did you get a refund from Paypal?
@canuk @Kyeh
evidently yes See this post
@canuk @chienfou
Yes, thanks - I saw that.
Except that was compunaut?
@canuk @Kyeh
OOOOPS!
Seems as legit as the ads for the kinetic wind sculptures on clearance from twenty-plus domains at the same time, all using identical video of a design that was an art piece from a decade back. IIANM, the original went for 50k, and the copies are 300; yeah, right.
@werehatrack and they’re all places no one has heard of and they’re “sad to be going out of business”
