@visualseed My dad gave his oldest sister's kids a toy drum. I think he was still in college and didn't know better. In revenge, she got us a toy guitar that was more like a keytar, with a built in speaker that could get fairly loud, and a microphone headset so we could amplify our singing along with the music. It was TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
@Cinoclav Thanks for that. 8 minutes I didn't have to spend trying to think of a logical reason to buy this drumset. Peart + his drum menagerie reminds of Keith Emmerson and his synth-wall (especially in the late 70's when ELP toured with an 80 piece orchestra.)
@Kerig3 I first saw them in '84 for Grace Under Pressure. I was 14. At 45 I can happily say that I've seen them at least once on every single tour since then. The Clockwork Angels set was just insane. Here's a great site for the history of Neil's drums: http://andrewolson.com/Neil_Peart/drums/drumkits/drums_history.htm
@Cinoclav Yes. This year VIP is through ticket master (I hate ticket master) But you know what seats you're getting up front. All the VIPs are sold out.
@Headly The Philly tix were through VIPNation, Ticketmaster/Live Nation's evil offspring. I was on it as soon as possible but I have no idea if they truly dish out the seating by the time the tickets were sold.
@Cinoclav VIP Nation seems to do a better job that TM IMO. At least last tour I got front/center, but I didn't find out until I showed up at the concert. Then I shit my pants.
@Headly Same company basically since Ticketmaster and Live Nation merged. If anything, LN got worse as their service fees weren't nearly as bad until the merger. I think it all depends on which company had contracts with what venues as to who does the VIP.
@johnt Hmm 9 sold for $917… ??? better check your automated calculator as that inflates it by $2. So 3 non VMP's buy, 6 VMP's buy and someone tipped you $2?
EDIT - now 13 and $1332…??? and still off by $2. OR maybe more? Maybe everyone was VMP and it is really off by $32… Maybe, maybe it is ALL fiction….???? LOL
@cengland0 Taxes in TX are cheap then. Here that would be $7 (and food, over the counter meds, etc. are taxed). More if the city or county added a sales tax to it.
@Kidsandliz You don't know exactly how many were taxed and how many were not. So in the first example, it could have been $17 tax for one person for 17% total. Remember, some of that is shipping for some people so it's hard to calculate without knowing all the facts.
@matthew I don't want to tell you what to do, but I can tell you that asking your wife for permission was not a good idea. The correct way to handle those things is "Hey honey, look what I got and you did not get a chance to veto. This is how it's gonna be now."
@matthew I'm not allowed to "pull the trigger" since my wife is asleep. I might be able to convince her, but if I buy it without talking to her first I will be in a world of hurt.
@matthew or try this - "Honey, you know that drinking issue I have? Well I found an alternative outlet. And instead of a hundred bucks a week, it is only a one time hit of a hundred bucks!"
@matthew You blew it up front. I'm not even married and I know that, when it arrives, you hand it to her and say "Surprise!" And then after the awkward pause, you say, "Well, the kids will be able to use it. That we'll have. Someday." And then after the next awkward pause, you say, "Well, with an attitude like that, it doesn't look like you're going to be able to teach them" and pull up your stool.
I encourage everyone to try a Roland drumset before pulling the trigger here. drummer speaking with experience Think Oster blender vs Vitamix... This milkshake won't bring boys to the yard.
I really hope my shitty neighbor who's been rehearsing drums for the last 6 month without any hint of improvement sees this. I'm even willing to lend him the $100. And free headphones.
@TehMaliron This doesn't have a MIDI port to connect straight to the adapter, because it uses MIDI over USB instead. At best you can connect this drum set to a computer via USB, then connect your own MIDI adapter to your computer so that your computer can send a signal out to a MIDI port which connects to the MIDI Pro Adapter, and then run a program on your computer which will forward the signal from one to the other.
@JonT You can use that device to send the signals from your computer to the MIDI Pro Adapter. You would connect the drum set to a PC using regular USB, and connect that device to the same PC so that your PC can talk to your MIDI Pro Adapter through it. Then run a program that listens to signals from the drum set and sends it out toward the MIDI Pro Adapter. For someone who just wants to play drums on their computer, having the drum set talk USB directly makes things easier, but for anything that specifically needs a MIDI cable like the MIDI Pro Adapter does, it's more complicated. http://www.ndolger.com/configuring-usb-keyboard-with-rock-band-3/ explains the process
Sweet revenge for the free babysitters of the world, AKA: Aunts and Uncles, Grandparents-- Friday nite bbsitting with free espresso filled with sugar and electric drums for the kiddies! right before parents arrive home nite nite :P
Add the price of a drum throne...an absolute necessity. I had the original version of the ION drums which came with an Alesis sound module. It wasn't bad for an inexpensive electronic drumset. If you have an incipient drummer among your offspring, this is a relatively painless way to see their level of commitment for $100.
With headphones, they're not completely quiet...but a light tapping compared to a set of acoustic drums...much better.
It's a lot more fun and useful to practice on something like this set than a drum pad. A bottom line "real" set of electronic drums will start at around 500.00...$100 to see if you want to go further is a deal.
I can totally imagine pretending to consider buying this for about a half hour at the local guitar center before pretending to consider buying a guitar instead. I can imagine pretending to consider buying both as I walk back outside, empty handed but that much better a musician.
I could not hit the "Meh" button fast enough to express my feelings about today's offering. The only way to make it more "Meh" would be to add a speaker dock.
"I don't want to work, I just want to bang the drums all day"!
Don't want this, but if I did, it would be one "bangin'" deal meh. Gotta say well "played" today, and it's been a while since you've had something worthwhile.
hmm. i was thinking about replacing my broken Wii Guitar Hero drumset. I see that there is a Wii adapter in that link, but does anyone know if it will work with Guitar Hero (Metallica especially)?
Worth noting that I do have the original drum set, but the pads are utterly wrecked, plastic pieces broken, it's a horrific mess. I see there are two 5-pin MIDI connections on it -- can I get this kit, and a standard MIDI cable, and connect it to the original Wii drum unit controller?
We have updated today's write up to include sad information here - the suggested midi adapter is apparently NOT a solution to get these "USB MIDI" drums working on Rock Band Xbox360/Ps3/Wii
There's an active discussion (inbound linking to us now) on the potential that a PC as a go-between could serve as a bridge to get MIDI out in the correct manner but that may be more hassle than it's worth.
We'll be emailing folks who bought to help clarify this and have opportunity to cancel. Having bought one, I guess I'll get an email shortly myself in fact! For what it's worth, I'm going to keep mine for just use as midi drums and see if anyone streamlines the PC-bridge option as a reliable solution.
Also open to discussion here if anyone has a less cumbersome approach or has used the PC as a bridge firsthand.
@snapster Really respect the honesty. It's still a great deal if you want a cheap drum set to play with. I'm struggling internally between wanting and not needing.
@snapster yeah, super bummed. As a cheap drum kit, it's probably a good deal. But if I'm going to have something taking up room, I would want it to work with RB. But I do respect the honesty and trying to right things by offering a cancellation. I wouldn't be incredibly upset, though, if you guys offered another deal on a comparable set that was compatible with RB. :)
@snapster Maybe if someone was curious enough, they could look into using a Raspberry Pi as a go-between instead of a full computer. Apparently there is a lot of support for MIDI on the Raspberry Pi from a quick Google search, so it may be worth investigating for others. This of course doesn't solve the "more involved" portion of it issue
@snapsterClassy way to handle the surprise. Bonus points. Next time I'm on the fence about buying something meh I'll fall on the meh side (buy it in this case). Lucky the discovery came prior to shipment!
@snapster well thanks for the offer to cancel. I've had to accept that offer, then. The original writeup sounded like it went USB-B to MIDI .. which would be perfect.. but having to go through another processor would be too laggy, and possibly cost prohibitive. sigh. So much for getting my GH Metallica drumming back on track.
@stunerone If you have to bridge it with a PC to get it to work I would suggest only doing so with pcs with a good sound system or high function motherboards like my z97x gaming 5 motherboard which has Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 gaming audio suite. Audio Noise Guard with LED path lighting. Gold plated display and audio ports. High end Nichicon audio capacitors. Realtek ALC1150 115dB SNR HD Audio with Built-in rear audio amplifier. That way the latency is down to a minimal and you have full function control. Personally I am tempted but I don't want to be a $100 lab rat.
To anyone bummed about apparent lack of Rock Band support, you might want to check out Phase Shift. It's like if Guitar Hero and Rock Band made sweet, sweet love, and the bastard child was let loose on the PC.
Check out YouTube to see some of the user-created themes and songs.
Not 100% sure on compatibility with this, but it supports MIDI instruments, this is a MIDI instrument, etc. Should be fine, but since meh is still working on the technology to print out my purchases on my old dot matrix I obviously haven't tested it.
@snapster I got my iPad 2 to recognize the Rock Band Keyboard in GarageBand using a USB-MIDI adapter and the iPad Camera Kit's USB dongle. It might work for other midi instruments as well.
@on I looked at that earlier today. It is intended to exchange conventional MIDI signals with a computer USB port. It is in fact what this Ion Redline model avoids needing to connect to a PC. Unfortunately it requires loading an embedded driver onto the PC/Mac that interprets the patched MIDI signals. It also likely gets power from the PC standard USB port. Patching this in without a PC or Mac would likely not match whatever USB signal method Ion is using. There are some reports of similar cables working, but I think it's a real long shot here.

@lichme I'll play the keyboard....when it's for sale.
@mediocrebot Nice try MEH but looks like they just started adding songs agin. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/01/harmonix-adds-new-dlc-songs-to-rock-band-after-nearly-two-year-break/
Meh
@Stallion Super meh
@rlesueur
meh2
this is so meh
Very intriguing, yet quite meh.
um why....
@rmf83 indeed
every day should be a fukubukuro
@tz304608 That would be so awesome...although we would never be able to get to it since the servers would always be down. :-(
Duplicate face as 11/6/2014
@cengland0 That was his brother temporarily standing in for him while he was recovering from last night.
@cengland0 Image is now corrected on the Meh calendar as well as button. Thanks for the catch.
@Lichme is your mehstalker going to pick up the new face? I've never seen them change it before so I had doubt you go back and check for a change.
@cengland0 It will pick up the change in the morning. It does a daily check of the previous 5 days.
Does this have blue tooth to pair with my boob speakers?
I think I'm going to march to the sound of a different drummer....meh!
pfffffffffffffffffft
Such an awesome impulse buy, but I'm not baller enough for $100 impulse buys.
@djslack I'm not quite baller enough either, but I pulled the trigger anyways
Good news anyone interested in this for Guitar Hero. They are actually working on a new game to be likely released this year for PS4 and Xbone
@wilstev When you say "new"...
Why not before christmas? I could have given this to my sister's kid. I don't like my sister very much.
You hipsters.
Oh man. I really hope my husband doesn't see this.
This is cool. I wanted one of these, maybe from a better company though
Aready have one "Band Hero" drum set (yes it was a real game, I'm not mixing up Rock Band and Guitar Hero).
In for one eaten-snobby-pastry party time!
@opiemeh I hope you don't live next door to me!
No, you'll never be Neil Peart with these. (Besides needing about 30 more pieces...)
@Cinoclav "Moving Pictures" Tour: February 1981!!! That drum setup was unbelievable!

@Cinoclav i just scored 4th row center for phoenix. new non spinning mostly non electronic kit for this tour.
@Headly Were they VIP? I hate not knowing where my seats are until I arrive at the show. Ugh! Yeah, the site I linked above has the new set. It's absolutely gorgeous. http://andrewolson.com/Neil_Peart/drums/drumkits/r40.htm
@Cinoclav Yes. This year VIP is through ticket master (I hate ticket master) But you know what seats you're getting up front. All the VIPs are sold out.

@Ryaneil I've had this saved on my computer for years. Love it.
Sorta wanna buy...
More like Meh Hero
oh if I had $100
The perfect gift for your kids....assuming you're the non-custodial parent, of course.
Total meh. Most days I'm tempted to buy something I don't need from meh. But this is so ugh.
Any electronics with knobs for slow, good and fast is worth purchasing!!!
If I buy 10 of these, will the total price drop to $80?
Yes, I do - I really do - I actually do really own & drive a red Saturn Ion Redline.......and it really does ROCK!
Google photo of same one .... ( sorry, but I'm just not headed outside at midnight to take a picture to share of my actual car ). [img][/img]
i already have an electronic drum set that i got one christmas long ago. haven't used it since i was like 15. i'm 22 now
now reviewing..
Rock Band actually had another DLC pack come out recently, and they're taking surveys about a revival of the series.
It's not far off!
This makes me want to learn to play the drums.
what the hell??????????
Notes:
The sticks are probably crap. Good (but not fantastic) ones can be had for $10.
The foot pedals will break after a while, they're plastic.
If you want to play proper Pro Mode in Rock Band 3 (where you use the cymbals along with the toms and snare) you have to get a third cymbal.
My band director always used to say "EVERYONE is a frustrated drummer on the inside." Get this and set your inner drummer free!
@Kerig3 Yikes. Dick should have stuck to quantum mechanics.
@johnt Hmm 9 sold for $917… ??? better check your automated calculator as that inflates it by $2. So 3 non VMP's buy, 6 VMP's buy and someone tipped you $2?

@Kidsandliz Some places have to pay tax
@Kidsandliz God bless Taxes

@Kidsandliz every analytical meh-follower initially noodles this issue... And then moves on, in simple awe as the dollars rack up.
Are the sounds louder when you hit them harder?
@MechaJustin yes. whatever you'd call that, it is pressure sensitive in more than just a binary fashion.
Oh, dammit. I was just thinking that I needed something to use to program drums. Someone tell me how much this sucks.
@MPF It can suck a golf ball through a garden hose.
@4G_Reaper That's horrible, and by "horrible" I mean "Intriguing" and also "in for three"
@MPF You have a band in your basement? Or are you planning to drive the neighbors nuts?

I want one of these but my wife says I can't get it.
@matthew get an acoustic set. then I bet she'll reconsider you getting today's deal
@matthew sounds like inspiration for a very mediocre song
@matthew I don't want to tell you what to do, but I can tell you that asking your wife for permission was not a good idea. The correct way to handle those things is "Hey honey, look what I got and you did not get a chance to veto. This is how it's gonna be now."
@matthew I'm not allowed to "pull the trigger" since my wife is asleep. I might be able to convince her, but if I buy it without talking to her first I will be in a world of hurt.
@matthew Tell her you need it for work...
@matthew or try this - "Honey, you know that drinking issue I have? Well I found an alternative outlet. And instead of a hundred bucks a week, it is only a one time hit of a hundred bucks!"
@RedOak It worked for buying all my gym equipment

I really hope my shitty neighbor who's been rehearsing drums for the last 6 month without any hint of improvement sees this. I'm even willing to lend him the $100. And free headphones.
@tsm You could always use your neighbor's name and address, instead of your own. This way you can also be anonymous in your generosity.
@tsm Sorry. I'll gladly accept. Can you tell your dog to shut up??
I am convinced that free holiday VMP thing was a troll.
Please! I want to give you (small sums of) my money! Put something up for sale that reasonable people would buy.
@elpepe Why didn't you buy those walkie talkies at 2 for $10?
@elpepe I'm sure there will be a nice speaker dock for you soon…
@jqubed That sold out in like an hour
@legendornothing Oh, yeah I guess that would be a problem.
Make sure you buy a midi cable if you get the adapter. It doesn't come with one apparently.
@TehMaliron I don't believe it comes with the computer that you would plug that midi cable into and the software either.
@cengland0 I believe you have to connect the drums to the adapter via midi, then the adapter via usb to the Xbox.
@atari2600tim pretty sure you would only need this in addition to the adapter: http://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Adapter/dp/B00ACGMOA6/
@JonT You can use that device to send the signals from your computer to the MIDI Pro Adapter. You would connect the drum set to a PC using regular USB, and connect that device to the same PC so that your PC can talk to your MIDI Pro Adapter through it. @atari2600tim awesome thanks for the info. We looked at that site after I had already posted that but you are 100% correct.
Sweet revenge for the free babysitters of the world, AKA: Aunts and Uncles, Grandparents-- Friday nite bbsitting with free espresso filled with sugar and electric drums for the kiddies! right before parents arrive home
nite nite :P
D*mmit, Meh. Looks like I'm going to learn how to play the drums now.
@SirLouie btw hows that ukelele coming along?
@TheAlmighty1 I was 8 seconds away from buying that uke but I bought a violin elsewhere LITERALLY a few days before so I passed.
Can't blame Meh for trying to drum up some business. I'm not cymbal-minded enough for them to snare me, though.
@editorkid oh man, I'd totally kick it, but I gotta beat it outta here. My ride, Tom, is here. I'm gonna crash at his pad.
@SpeakerDoc 8/10 you were definitely on a roll with those man, ended on a pretty good note.
@editorkid I hope you didn't trip up on your way out. I wouldn't want you to get a percussion.
Add the price of a drum throne...an absolute necessity. I had the original version of the ION drums which came with an Alesis sound module. It wasn't bad for an inexpensive electronic drumset. @SpeakerDoc I love pretending to consider buying things!
I have a 2 year old. For that alone, meh.
@bakeyoural That just means that someone who hates you will buy one for your child for their birthday.
scapegoat bath
So tempted... But Logic Pro has a damn good built in automatic drum sequencer.
On the other hand, it would bring me closer to @studerc's purchase total...
This is actually a great deal for what you get. If I didn't already have an Alesis DM6 I would be in for one.
Pardon me whilst I step outside to see if the pigs are indeed flying.
@havasuflash
oh meh god.
Thanks meh.
I could not hit the "Meh" button fast enough to express my feelings about today's offering. The only way to make it more "Meh" would be to add a speaker dock.
@sjk3 we did test it with a speaker dock - the JBL mini performs quite well via aux-in!
@sjk3 @snapster the speaker dock worked so well in fact that I thought we had a real, acoustic drum set going in the back of the office.
@sjk3 Sure just give them more ideas for Friday.
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
I love purple.
Sorry, meh. Rocksmith 2014 doesn't support drums...yet.

Don't want this, but if I did, it would be one "bangin'" deal meh. Gotta say well "played" today, and it's been a while since you've had something worthwhile.
I want to buy one so bad but not even an impulse like mine will allow me to spend $100...
Looks just like the Alesis DM Lite
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00F5OG37K
I'll buy this if you hack it to translate midi into keystrokes, and then I'll powerdrum all my code at work
I finally took this advice:
Thank goodness the band moved out of the basement!
Can anyone confirm this works with PS3?
hmm. i was thinking about replacing my broken Wii Guitar Hero drumset. I see that there is a Wii adapter in that link, but does anyone know if it will work with Guitar Hero (Metallica especially)?

hmm. doing research, I found http://mygggo.com/2009/02/rock-band-2-guitar-hero-world-tour-with-real-drums-part-3-basic-setup/ ... which seems to indicate that yes, that will work. I'm hoping that I can actually just remove the controller box from the old kit, so I don't have to have both kits.

@jader201 These would have the same problem in that they'd need to run through a computer. "And it does NOT have a MIDI connector. So if you were thinking about using this as a MIDI trigger without a PC, forget it. (And forget about using this with the Rock Band 3 MIDI controller.)"
@snapster If anyone wants to get rid of theirs, I missed out. :P
So does it or doesn't it work with rockband?
@stunerone it does not work directly or with a single adapter that we are yet aware of
@stunerone If you have to bridge it with a PC to get it to work I would suggest only doing so with pcs with a good sound system or high function motherboards like my z97x gaming 5 motherboard which has Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 gaming audio suite.
Best Music based vidya: Rhythm Heaven Fever!
@kneeCaP thanks. I guess PC version would be on my list right after an MFi bluetooth iOS version
@snapster I got my iPad 2 to recognize the Rock Band Keyboard in GarageBand using a USB-MIDI adapter and the iPad Camera Kit's USB dongle. It might work for other midi instruments as well.
This works really well for MIDI to Rock Band conversion. Plug-and-go solution for less than $20. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Rock-Band-Midi-PRO-Adapter/dp/B00409SOD2
@on haven't followed link but it's probably not a go for this "USB-MIDI" as we've so pleasantly discovered today
@snapster There's always a product out there for everything since engineers have way too much time on their hands. In this case, this converter converts USB to MIDI http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Cable-Converter-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG.
And then you can just use that to link up to the MIDI to Rockband converter I had mentioned before.
@snapster Check this out...least expensive alternative, methinks http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDIExpand
@on This is a reasonably priced (others are over $100) actual USB-MIDI to 5-pin MIDI converter http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDIExpand
Well I caved and am lucky 400

I'm starting a one man band with my keyboard and guitar and with this kit. This isn't a joke. You think this is a joke? It's not funny.
I'll add mine to my instrument collection.
1 keyboard
6 penny whistles
4 ukuleles
3 guitars
6 harmonicas
1 ukulin
Too bad it won't work with Rocksmith 2014. :)
@dotyj Oh, and my Theremin.
The Redline drums DO work with Rock Band. Used on of these inbetween the drums and midi-adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kenton-Electronics-MIDI-USB-Host-Interface-BRAND-NEW-AUTHORIZED-DEALER-/291362718509?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43d692432d
